Everton vs Newcastle – Carroll Starts

May 11th, 2008 by Ed Harrison · 172 Comments

everton-fc_crest.png nufc-crest.png

Kevin Keegan has made a total of four changes to the side which was beaten by Chelsea on Monday afternoon, and we’re pleased to see Andy Carroll handed his first ever start.

The 19-year-old has so far made five substitute appearances this season, but will start for the first time this afternoon, alongside captain Michael Owen in attack.

Carroll comes in for the injured Mark Viduka (Achilles).

One surprise is that Alan Smith has come in for Oba Martins up front, who is not even on the bench. We had expected Kevin to start Smith – but in place of Viduka and we had expected Oba to play.

Joey Barton (bail conditions) and Geremi (?) are also missing, and Charles N’Zogbia and Damien Duff in the team in their place. This could be Charles’ last game for the club, since we believe he will move on in the summer.

17 year-old Ben Tozer is named to the bench for the very first time, while Peter Ramage is also on the bench. He will be leaving Newcastle in the summer. As we expected 17 year-old rising young star Lua Lua is also on the bench.

So we have 3 of our most promising youngsters, either playing, or on the bench this afternoon in Carroll, Tozer and Lua Lua.

But this is not as good a team as the one we fielded gainst Chelsea, but Kevin has given some some players a chance, and if they can win it will be an excellent performance.

TEAMS

Everton: Tim Howard, Joseph Yobo, Joleon Lescott, Phil Jagielka, Phil Neville (c), Steven Pienaar, Leon Osman, Yakubu, Manuel Fernandes, Lee Carsley, Victor Anichebe
Subs: Leighton Baines, Thomas Gravesen, Daniel Gosling, Stefan Wessels, Jack Rodwell

Newcastle United:
Steve Harper, Habib Beye, Jose Enrique, Steve Taylor, Abdoulaye Faye, Nicky Butt, Charles N’Zogbia, Damien Duff, Alan Smith, Michael Owen (c), Alan Smith, Andy Carroll
Subs: Fraser Forster, Claudio Cacapa, Peter Ramage, Ben Tozer, Kazenga LuaLua

Referee: Peter Walton
Attendance: tbc

  • 2 Geordie Gerrard7 // May 11, 2008 at 2:34 PM

also has kk lost the plot putting in almost all defenders on the bench

    no Martin????
    oh nooooooooooooooooooooo

  • 7 Tom4NUFC // May 11, 2008 at 2:38 PM

My guess is oba injured himself, and smith had to be put in as a last gasp decision, I reckon he wanted to just put Carroll on for The Duke. And leave owen just in behind oba and Carroll, but this could be positive, if Smith plays well clubs such a Boro could be interested in him again… I hope

  • 8 dougnufc // May 11, 2008 at 2:38 PM

    2 ALAN SMITHS? Disaster

  • 9 Charlie Bucket // May 11, 2008 at 2:39 PM

Come on lets see what some of these kids can do, we’ve heard so much about Carroll, Tozer and Lua Lua. Now they can make their mark.

Why have Ramage or Cacapa on the bench when they are leaving in the summer? Would have looked to Kadar, Edgar or Doninger personally.

Also surprised to see no Martins…why?

  • 10 Geordie Gerrard7 // May 11, 2008 at 2:39 PM

    my accumalator today is
    birmingham v blackburn
    everton v newcastle

  • 11 Hadrian // May 11, 2008 at 2:40 PM

nigeria and cameroon have got a load of friendlys within a short space of time comming up apparenlty , may have something todo with it .
ramage ? whats the point ? get him to sign a new contract ?

  • 12 Maverick // May 11, 2008 at 2:43 PM

I remember King Kev said when he first joined that he wanted a full team of Alan Smiths but this is taking the mick a bit

  • 13 Leo // May 11, 2008 at 2:45 PM

i think tozer can also play left midfield so its not totally defencive bench, lua lua is a fire cracker of a forward style player im happy about the team, maybe not to keen on smith but if there is two of them they both can get booked lol…

  • 14 Taiwantoon // May 11, 2008 at 2:46 PM

    2 Alan Smith? That’s 9 against 11 today then.

  • 15 ScottyT // May 11, 2008 at 2:46 PM

i think this is a very good seclection from kk apart from oba but you neva know he might have an injury or somthing, have to w8 and see.

glad to see carroll starting and nice to see ramage on bench to give him a good send off. also very happy to see lua lua and tozer on bench and i think we might see them on at some point today would be good to see. nt bad from kk imo.

  • 16 dougnufc // May 11, 2008 at 2:48 PM

    any links to the game?

  • 17 xfer // May 11, 2008 at 2:48 PM

Will be playing with 9 man if we have 2 Smiths.

Give Carroll a chance, i think he deserves it. Good gesture from KK to let Ramage bench this game. I reckon he will be on in the closing minutes for a warm reception.

I like this lad, unfortunately, he wants regular football, we cannot afford him that atm. Hes been very committed whenever he has been called upon, disappointed he is leaving, all the best Rammy.

  • 20 Greg P // May 11, 2008 at 2:50 PM

I imagine Keegan is seeing if Carroll is at all capable at this level before looking at next season – I think in 100 minutes time we’ll see that its Carrolls last game at the club!
Will be good to see Lua Lua get a run out and I imagine Ramage and Nzogbia are playing their farewell games

  • 21 domtoon // May 11, 2008 at 2:51 PM

if anyone finds a good sopcast link, do bet a legend and let us know…

  • 27 ObaFan2 // May 11, 2008 at 2:53 PM

mmmmmmm no Oba and Smith playing, kinda happy now sopcast etc arn’t showing the match !

KK said he’d field his strongest side for todays game…… thats a bit of a worry but yes maybe Oba is injured or maybe somethings happened or maybe KK’s showing MA how crap we can actually be!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • 28 Tom_Toon // May 11, 2008 at 2:55 PM

Oba and Geremi are both injured.

  • 29 faustino // May 11, 2008 at 2:56 PM

According to the always reliable nufc.com there is only a couple of channels showing this worldwide. Finding a stream will be tricky.

  • 30 yet_another_indian_toon // May 11, 2008 at 3:01 PM

    Not smith again…..

Neways, i will give him clean slate to prove himself this match…

    & to Ed,
Steve Harper, Habib Beye, Jose Enrique, Steve Taylor, Abdoulaye Faye, Nicky Butt, Charles N’Zogbia, Damien Duff, Alan Smith, Michael Owen (c), Alan Smith, Andy Carroll

1 smith is too much to bear, your team listing has 2. Have you put a hex on us???

  • 31 Bill F // May 11, 2008 at 3:01 PM

If MA is starting a clone factory then perhaps he is trying it out on the most expendable player first. :)

Bye Bye for now be back after MOTD tonight.

  • 32 Nev // May 11, 2008 at 3:05 PM

i rekon we get beat 2-0
i dont rate smith duff or carroll (i dont care if hes a local boy)
no martins viduka geremi and barton
    a bench with 3!!! defender!
KK has gone mad, i dont see him lasting the summer at this rate

  • 33 craig chisholm // May 11, 2008 at 3:05 PM

i am gald that duff and zogs are playing, i said yesterday that i thought they would. shame it’ll be zogs last stand in the black and white eh. we should have given him the left all along and just fcuked off duff. is martins injured nad also is milner still injured? i hear liverpool are interested in milner, if so a swap for crouch would be good. i think the young guns will win us this game and i think carroll is going to score on his senior debut!!

  • 34 ScottyT // May 11, 2008 at 3:08 PM

nev its last game of season
    barton and viduka are unavailable
geremi and oba seem to be injured
    nothing to play for
    get real ffs man

  • 43 ObaFan2 // May 11, 2008 at 3:27 PM

Sounds like Everton have had a couple of half chances, Carroll for us has had a half chance too but seems like a 50-50 possesion atm, maybe they are just shading it.

  • 44 ScottyT // May 11, 2008 at 3:28 PM

0-0 yakubu causing faye and our defense trouble
not much from either side rly. everton probably better at the moment just.

  • 45 Nev // May 11, 2008 at 3:28 PM

still .. 3 defenders on the bench ?
what about someone like godsmark or frank wiafe “danqa” (sounds sumthin like that lol)
and id have liked to have seen kazenga or forster given a start

  • 46 ObaFan2 // May 11, 2008 at 3:28 PM

nev true i spose.. wouldnt have had cacapa on bench tbh and would have started lualua yes.

  • 50 Rob Kirton // May 11, 2008 at 3:30 PM

Team line up looks fine by me. (30 mins in and we’re still giving them a game)

Before today we’re 12th, after today and we’ll still be 12th.

I seem to recall that we struck a deal to release Oba early for international duty (he wont have much of a break this summer) and that Geremi is injured. It is good day for some people to prove themselves.

Alan Smith (If he wants to stay at the club – lets hope he plays a stinker)

    Damien Duff (Ditto)

Andy Carroll (if he wants to be 4th forward on the roster)

I have a sneaking feeling that Tozer will get a game even if only late on in the 2nd half. I don’t think Keegan necessarily rates Enrique, if he keeps turning his back on the attacking player as he did against Chelsea last week we will have the option of Zog / Duff / Tozer at left back.

  • 51 ScottyT // May 11, 2008 at 3:30 PM

Alan SMITH is total rubbish. How can KK pick him. We play with 10 men. Not scored a league goal for THREE YEARS. On £65K a week. Unbelievable. Pay me £65 K a week and I guarantee to score one goal in three years

  • 78 dougnufc // May 11, 2008 at 3:43 PM

  • 79 Rob Kirton // May 11, 2008 at 3:43 PM

Alan Smith having an INTERESTING game – even by his standards. I’d just haul him off and bring on a sub right now. (before half time to show him up)

  • 80 ObaFan2 // May 11, 2008 at 3:43 PM

  • 92 ObaFan2 // May 11, 2008 at 3:48 PM

daiv, we have 3 forward on the pitch (if Smith is included) so we could bring one off and play a 4-4-2 which I think we should have played today anyway with Dukes being injured.

but yes Smith is a waste of space.

My Dad and older brother have liked Man U since the 60’s.

However me being a Geordie (my bro is an Aus) have black n white blood so there’s 2 Toon fans you know now Spyro who don’t hate Man U as much as you should think.

    reading down

  • 161 Michael12 // May 11, 2008 at 5:02 PM

Well to say the least. In all honesty this flash in the pan from Keegan is now out of steam. Keegan has done well to keep us safe but is not capable of taking us forward from here. It is no secret we are behind the top four. But we are behind:
    Everton,
    Aston Villa,
    Man City,
    Blackburn,

That would keep us about 9th 10th perhaps when Tottenham find their feet under Ramos.

We have a fragile first team. If a piece went missing, we fall apart. A manager bereft of tactical awareness. Sven is available, bring him on to manage the Magpies.

  • 162 Geordie Gerrard7 // May 11, 2008 at 5:06 PM

michael12, hmmmm yeah lets bring in sven whos team just conceded 8. shut up you useless prick

  • 163 ScottyT // May 11, 2008 at 5:08 PM

    what do you expect..

this is the same team as earlier in the season.. we had a good run of results and everton are simply better than us. all keegan had to do this season was to keep us up. now he needs to bring quality in.

people talking bowt keegans job are pathetic and embarassing.

  • 164 tapir // May 11, 2008 at 5:11 PM

    Keegan has it
but really Ashley really need to back him up with lot of money!!
if Scums can have 50m kitty, we only can manage to gather 20m???
    such a shame…

  • 165 Michael12 // May 11, 2008 at 5:20 PM

It is likely they conceded 8 goals in retaliation toward the club owner for discharging Sven. A manager with whom they obviously worked well.

It is not to say I dislike Keegan, on the contrary I do as a person but I begin to see his ability for mixing things around is short. He found a magic Bullet at Newcastle that allowed us to be competitive. I do not doubt that. What I am saying is, his “Arsenal” contained only 1 bullet. If as in this case, a piece goes missing, he does not have an answer and we have seen this over the last three games.

We know a season is long and depth and an ability to change things so as to reduce your predictability is important. Not only this but to run the length of a season you need to be able to change things. Keegan cannot change things in a game because he cannot design tactics around a team but has to design a team around his lack of tactics.

If Michael Owens departure is the catalyst to see Keegan quit then the sooner Michael Owen rejects this contract the better it is for us all.

“Gerrard Geordie, stevie Geordie” what ever you call yourself, get a grip on reality for a moment and realise that a club is a business, not a fairytale.

  • 166 Michael12 // May 11, 2008 at 5:28 PM

ScottyT: What you must realise is that, the managerial Jobs are not safe unless you are fergie or Wenger. this season we have seen an unusual number of managerial casualties for some of the most minor of transgressions.

Allerdyce, Sven, Jose. these are high profile personalities and Keegan is abusing his position at the club, knowing the fans have his back by making such ungrateful outbursts. He should simply shut up and demonstrate on the pitch what he could do if the money is made available rather than asking his bosses to back him purely on faith.

This is not a religion and with money is what you are gambling. If I was a shareholder of Newcastle, I would have little confidence of investing my money for him to gamble. He needs to prove himself. While we have survived, he made a big meal of what was supposed to be academic for a manager demonstrating competence.

  • 167 ScottyT // May 11, 2008 at 5:38 PM

what so when allardyce came out nearly every day with his head up his arse and talked about great he was and how he was always right and his ‘great success’ at bolton that was alright?

he got sacked cos his results were awful dreadful and the football was no better. with keegan there is an improvement in the quality of football being played and we are at least trying to win a football match. hes been here since january ffs and hes done his 1st job.

now the least he can be expected to do is to be left to continue to the next stage of his job which is to find quality players to let us compete with the top 6 next season. just let him get on with it!

  • 168 Toonboy // May 11, 2008 at 5:40 PM

roll on the summer,we need at least 8 first ream players,i cant see it with only 20mil :-(

  • 169 Geordie Gerrard7 // May 11, 2008 at 5:44 PM

we dont know if we only have 20 mill ffs, we have table an off for veloso of 15

  • 170 ScottyT // May 11, 2008 at 5:47 PM

20 mil is bull reports as usual.. ignore is my advice and see in the summer..

  • 171 Michael12 // May 11, 2008 at 6:02 PM

ScottyT: I am merely pointing out the precarious nature of managerial positions in the premier League. Keegan must not think, that his past at Newcastle and his favor in the hearts of the fans give him license to spew out tripe, however true.

We live in a politically critical world and thus the heart should have no voice. speaking out like that is likely to get someone the sack and Keegan is not beyond such a soft sacking. Frankly I would rather was sacked for his incompetence than for silly comments.

    I have said mine.

  • 172 ScottyT // May 11, 2008 at 6:12 PM

all he said was he thought that the premier league was uncompetitive and said what us as fans know alredy.. that it will take a miracle and a lot of money to even get near the top 4. i dont see what is so wrong about that. over reaction from everyone especially the media.
