Bafe Gomis For £17M - No Thanks

May 11th, 2008 · 47 Comments

The People is reporting today that both Newcastle United and Bolton have been quoted a price of £17M for young St Etienne striker Bafetimbi Gomis.

bafetimbi-gomis-676.jpg

Bafe Gomis - price quoted is £17M - no thanks

Newcastle’s new scouting team believe he is a very good player, and would fit in well at Newcastle. Our initial offer was £9M, and while the club may go a few million higher, it will be nowhere near the £17M St. Etienne are asking for.

The youngster has been favorably compared to Didier Drogba, of Chelsea, and seems to fit into Newcastle’s new strategy, of trying to find players who will become big stars, but aren’t at the moment.

That’s a very similar strategy to what Arsenal have very successfully deployed over the last 10 years under Arsene Wenger.

Bolton manager Gary Megson has also been after Gomis for a while, as Bolton are looking for a replacement for Nicolas Anelka, but Bolton Wanderers hardly have the cash available that Newcastle do, and are not expected to pursue Gomis any further, because he is just too expensive for them.

Newcastle have been interested in Gomis for a few months now, and we reported back on March 17th, that we had officially bid £9M for the player.

We expect Newcastle to go a little higher with the amount, but nowhere near the £17M his club are asking.

Bafe is French and of Senegalese descent, and turns 23 in August. He stands just under 6′3″ tall and has recently been called up for the full French National side.

Here is Gomis’ playing record in France:

Years Club App Goals

2003-2005 St. Etienne 17 2
2005 Troyes AC 13 6
2005-present Saint-Étienne 79 24

2001-2002 France U-17 1 0

Comments very welcome.

He’s not even worth the 12/14 mil originally quoted.

    Hes 8 mil tops.

  • 2 nomis_jade // May 11, 2008 at 11:43

Maybe they would pay that much but over a couple of years, like they were going to do with modric? Wudnt be quite so bad then? I think this guy is a really good prospect, but we really need a midfielder. We should hurry up and put a bid in for arshavin.

  • 3 Ausgeordie // May 11, 2008 at 11:49

    rather pay 11 for crouch

  • 4 faustino // May 11, 2008 at 11:50

How bout give em Cacapa and Diatta too! No great loss there lol

  • 5 Hadrian // May 11, 2008 at 11:51

arseanl havent done that over the last 10 years , he’s done it over the last 5 , worked the kids in the last 3 .
before that he was forking out 10mill on strikers (henry) like the rest of us .
infact the diff between arsenals tranfer spend and our since the prem started , is about what souness spent .

wengers ‘history’ of bringing youth thru is a myth .

  • 6 mikeygd // May 11, 2008 at 11:53

i had a dream we signed him the other day so we must be getting him, mark my words he will be a toon player!

  • 7 faustino // May 11, 2008 at 11:54

24 in 79 aint great on reflection; my maths would put him on 12-13 goals a season in the Prem. That would be 1.3 million a goal.

  • 8 Tom_Toon // May 11, 2008 at 11:56

Its stupid when you can go to eastern europe (here i go again) and get a better player like Kalinic or Mandkuzic. Both big striker for much less.

  • 9 Darryl // May 11, 2008 at 11:58

so not too far different from owen then? Gomis would be on maybes 50k a week if hes lucky, also saving us about 2-3 million a year.

  • 10 moe // May 11, 2008 at 11:59

    he is fantastic

  • 11 Spyro // May 11, 2008 at 12:04

he i worth up to 10million maximum. He is a good prospect but St Etienne are just trying to take the piss

  • 12 Punk Skunk // May 11, 2008 at 12:04

I’m with TT on this one, let’s go to east europe for some players!..

  • 13 Darryl // May 11, 2008 at 12:07

Wasn’t there something mentioned somewhere about 4 english players must be included in each squad on a match day next season?

  • 14 Bill F // May 11, 2008 at 12:12

I said a couple of days ago you wouldn’t get much change out of 15m for him now. We should have gone for him when he was first mentioned him on this blog. I would go for his team mate Feindouno, he is the one who supplies the passes for Gomis and scores a few as well.

  • 15 toonarmy08 // May 11, 2008 at 12:22

Simply cannot pay 17mill 4 someone who is not really proven himself, although there are some good reports on this guy ,the premiership is a different ball game to lique1 .I think st ett have got way ahead of themselves with the reported fee.i would rather go 4 anelka, although he is 29 ,he will be alot cheaper and a proven premiership goal scorer!!

  • 18 geordie nick // May 11, 2008 at 13:04

why dont u lot let kk and the recruitment team decide how much this player is worth, after all they all know A LOT MORE about footballers and how much they are worth, than any one on here, let the professionals do ther job instd of all talkin as if ur professional scouts

  • 19 Hadji // May 11, 2008 at 13:10

12 mill is the maximum for him,or 8 mill+Rozehnal.Just heard on Croatian tv channel that Modric got beaten up from some fans. What is the reason?……I have no clue all i know is that he’s in the hospital now.

  • 20 Geordie Gerrard7 // May 11, 2008 at 13:13

good! hope rats teeth stays in there

  • 21 Nick Dryden // May 11, 2008 at 13:24

Hadrian have to disagee. Wenger has bought an endless production line of ” world class” youth right through from Anelka and Viera to Fabregas and Adebayor. Just look at all the Arsenal youngsters out on loan.
Souness and Shepherd ruined it for us throwing 50M at Owen, Boumsong and Luque, who virtually never played/ play, but have earned absolute fortunes.
We can’t have it both ways. Everyone knows players have only been coming to NUFC for the money.
I like the idea of bringing these talented youngsters in but we need good coaches like Wenger or Quiroz, not Terry Mac.

  • 22 Geordie Gerrard7 // May 11, 2008 at 13:29

ey i think this veloso deal is true, my mate is brazilian and i had an in length convo with him last night, and he said he was reading a portuguese news article and it said magpies representitives meeting sportings, to thrash out early deal for starlet

  • 27 Ross G // May 11, 2008 at 14:02

Im more interested in his scouting of Amara Diane the boy is quality, i saw him play against Lens and he scored a great goal and was a constant threat he keeps running and his pace and power with the ball is superb. have a look at him on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2IiqjTp7wmE&feature=related it gives u a fair view on his ability

  • 28 toonjon // May 11, 2008 at 14:07

  • 36 scottish mag // May 11, 2008 at 17:40

liverpool are going to offer players for milner according to:
    http://tribalfootball.com/article.php?id=92224

and chelsea are going to sell malouda nd SWP, def think we should make a move for SWP.

  • 37 SCOTOON // May 11, 2008 at 17:57

Hes an excellent player but not enogh experience for £17m but with Ashley’s money we shud be looking at big players and landing a couple £20m odd players! We should look at other young talent like Nasri and also the younger toon players like Tozer who is superb! Birmingham are relegated and we should raid them for McFAdden, Larssen and Zarate!!!

  • 38 gallowgate31 // May 11, 2008 at 18:31

Anyone else on here feel let down by MA… the guy should have been great for the club, but after the latest goings on and the seemingly poor transfer list I am really starting to wonder about him. We need some proof of his intent with a big name signing and then we can get excited about the young lads coming to the club, he seems to have forgotten that the season tickets have not yet been renewed..

Diane plays alot like Oba IMO..

  • 39 SCOTOON // May 11, 2008 at 18:43

I agree gallowgate becoz MA is loaded and so far he hasnt proven himself yet. Him and Mort have to give an unbelievable amount of money to KK so he can buy some world class players. With the cash of MA we could buy two £20+mil players - 1 of which a highly rated world class target man, a replacement for Dukes, we could have 3 hot prospects like zidan and nasri then 3 premiership- experianced players in their 20s like Dunne who could add some more strenghth to the team!

  • 40 Tom_Toon // May 11, 2008 at 19:20

Zidan a hot prospect? Hes isnt even that good and hes almost 27 i think.

  • 41 SCOTOON // May 11, 2008 at 19:42

Yes sori i got mixed up between 2 players! bt does anyone agree that MA should be giving KK the money to buy this amount of talented players? i surely no he can afford it!

  • 42 leather // May 11, 2008 at 22:16

Can’t see the point talking about this, he says he wants to go to Italy. Let him go there we have had loads of players at the toon ,that did not want to come in the 1st place. It should never happen again, its why we are in this mess.

  • 43 iain // May 11, 2008 at 22:36

the kids thing has wroked at arsenal largely becuase to begin with they had a very exp and successfull set of players to mix youngsters with, is it really a coincedince that as arsenal have shed there older players they have found it harder to win trophies ???

the bigger problem for us is we have no hugely talented sqaud to slowly indrouce young players and carry the burden of them learning the game.

look what happens the second we loose 1 or 2 quality players that started with viduka 2nd half vs chelsea we cant even compete with the better pl teams.

also what top young players want to come to a club who it seems if you believe reports are more keen on keeping crap players like smith rather than owen.

also there is a very limited supply of what you would call top class young players and even now becuase of the money in the pl they arnt that much cheaper.

eg young players already playing at established top clubs like veloso etc costing 15m.

top young players like ramsey(cardiff) turned us down at 8rys old according to wiki, james mccarthy (hamilton) being follwed by cl clubs so why would he come here ?, bostock+moses (palace) being followed my man utd and talk is they will cost 10m for two 16 yr olds.

  • 44 apan // May 12, 2008 at 10:46

i prefer we spend more WISELY like everton or villa rather than splashing out of desperation, this is a nutcase price and he is not a proven player, i rather get crouch for 10-12 mil

  • 45 Mson // May 12, 2008 at 14:04

    agree with #44

crouch SWP bridge (at least try) dunne 2 times Center Mid field please!

BTW did anyone see the matches zenit vs Bayern Munich in UEFA cup semi? that Defensive mid field guy in zenit with long blond hair (heh yea) was class, pretty sure it was Anatoliy Tymoschuk (29 age). Munich have classy players in CM but he ruled them and cleared all munichs attacks or was in the way some how all the time.

  • 46 toonlover // May 12, 2008 at 20:56

wouldnt be to happy if we got him for 10 million never mind 17

  • 47 Aurel // May 30, 2008 at 15:12

    G’day all,

This kid is the next big COMPLETE STRIKER-
Bet you he will go for no less than 25 Millions Euros and not before season 2009/10..unless bigger bet?!

By the way come and see we’ve got plenty more of young top player at Sainté!

    Allez les Verts.

    A. from Melbourne.

Dr. Ed Harrison is a retired IBM Consulting Group Executive who now has time, and lots of it, after 34 years at the American computer company, to write about his lifelong passion - Newcastle United Football Club.

Ed was born and bred in Newcastle Upon Tyne, and watched his first game at St. James’ Park in 1949 as a 4 year-old with his Mother and Father. He was told to look out for number 9 - Jackie Milburn – the great Wor Jackie - and was he fast!

In football terms Ed was a goalkeeper and played for Wharrier Street Primary School and Newcastle Minors (Newcastle Schoolboys Under-11), in 1956 and went on to play for Newcastle Schoolboys and Northumberland Schoolboys (Under-15) in 1959 and an England Schoolboys trial.

He was at Newcastle United for a couple of years from 1960 as an amateur, while still at school, and played with Bobby Moncur and David Craig, amongst others, for the Newcastle United Under-18 side (Newcastle N’s in those days), during the relegation season of 1960-1961.

Ed attended Heaton Technical and Manor Park schools, and then went on to study at both King’s College, London (BSc Electrical Engineering) and Newcastle University (PhD Computer Science). He played for Newcastle Universities and England Universities from 1967 until 1970.

But a short couple of years after Ed joined IBM in 1970, he was shipped over to the USA, with his new wife Madeline, a beautiful local Newcastle lassie.

At IBM Ed was in computer systems and network design for 34 years, and in his last 10 years at the company was persuaded to enter executive management. where he ended up running IBM's Americas' Network Consulting Group for 5 years from the late 1990s, and was instrumental in forming the IBM alliance with Cisco Systems in 1999.

Ed and Madeline live just outside Raleigh in North Carolina. Their twin sons Paul and Neil, and daughter Elaine, are now in their early 30s, live close by, and Neil has carried on the family tradition by becoming an avid Newcastle United supporter.

And one final thing that is so true - you can take the boy out of Newcastle but you can't take Newcastle out of the boy!

    Howay The Lads!!
