Michael Owen was asked this week about Kevin Keegan, and his response may surprise a lot of the Newcastle faithful.

Michael Owen - we think he’ll stay at Newcastle United
Michael Owen was asked this week by Newcastle World TV, about the impact Kevin Keegan has had on the club, and Michael was glowing in his praise of his new manager:
“He’s had a massive impact,”
“It was never going to happen straight away, not only did we have some tough games, but a lot of the lads were low on confidence.â€
“When you lose a manager the only reason you lose them is because results have not been good.â€
“The confidence wasn’t high, but if you could ever ask for a man to pick players up and get the best out of them then it’s Kevin Keegan, and I think there’s more improvement to come in that respect.â€
It doesn’t seem to us when our captain says there’s more improvement to come, that he’s thinking of leaving.
We think Michael may be ready to commit to Newcastle, and that may surprise quite a few Geordie fans, who may have thought he was just in it for the money, and nothing else.
While he’s like the rest of us and has to get the best deal he can for his family, he’s obviously enjoyed not only the extra responsibility he’s received under Kevin Keegan, but the growing respect and support of Newcastle fans, these last couple of months.
The Newcastle faithful are starting to believe Owen is more than fully committed to the Newcastle cause.
Michael continued:
“We all enjoy training and playing alongside each other and he has brought a real feel-good factor into the club.â€
“Everyone is enjoying coming in to training every day and when you do that you do it better.â€
“He knows his stuff and he can see a player, he can see if something needs tweaking or changing and tactically he’s very good.â€
“It’s been a fantastic appointment for us and we’ve all really enjoyed his time so far.”
Let us be the first to go on record to say we think Michael will sign a new, extended contract at the club.
What better than for our captain to set an example to the rest of the squad, and be willing to take less wages in the hope that club can be really successful once again under King Kev. That would be a tremendous example being set by Michael.
Not only will it absolutely delight Kevin Keegan, but if he does it soon, it could give Kevin and our club the momentum they need to tie down Steven Taylor and others, and bring a lot more top players into the club during the summer.
We really do think Michael is now fully committed to Newcastle United and Kevin Keegan, and we expect him to sign a new contract, sooner rather than later.
Comments welcome.

He better not leave, he has yet to repay the club with a performance worthy of that kind of obscene paycheck.

I think Owen will stay , but if the club do cash in on him i think KK will follow him out of the door

I don’t see anything in this report that means he’ll stay.

If he play for us all season with no injury. With Keegan he will score more than 20 for sure.
Hope he won’t leave us this summer. I’ll over the moon for it but anything can happen in football today. So God bless for toon !
6 Bill F // May 13, 2008 at 19:39
I can’t ever recall him saying he wants to leave, in fact I can only remember him saying he is happy at the Toon, especially since KK came.
Someone ought to give the gramaphone a kick as it seems to have got stuck. I can me see me continually falling asleep again this summer at the mention of his name.

Just to clarify - we’re not saying there’s anything specifically in this report from Michael that says he is going to stay. But we’re predicting he’ll stay - since all the gossip press is saying he’ll go - we don’t agree.

Just an idea for a vote!
What about having a vote of 5 realistic players linked to us: (5 defenders) (5 midfielders etc)etc… and let us vote to see who the most popular signings would be.
eg
Defenders: Dunn, Cuellar, Campbell etc
Strikers: Gudjohnssen, Ashton, Crouch, Gomis etc.
Midfielders would be a bit harder to know who is realistic.
But it would be interesting to see public opinion.

I agree that nothing in that interview means he’ll stay. Not only was it for the Newcastle site so he couldn’t say anything bad, he also didn’t say anything about himself, just that the club is looking up.
18 BILLY - B // May 13, 2008 at 20:11
Ihope your right because M.O. is without a doubt a world class striker and his record proves that.
OK since he joined the toon he has had nightmare with injuries, he became fit when B.S.A. was in charge and nobody could play under him. but under kevin his confidence along with most of the other players has slowely returned and no one can deny it shows. the other reason for wanting him to stay is that he will attract good players.
19 Ian // May 13, 2008 at 20:23
If he intends to stay at least till the end of next season you would think he would just speak up and then get on with a long holiday.
Dave Kitson has scored only one less premiership goal than Owen, he hasnt a lot to shout about, if he goes we want a straightforward talking striker like Martins where at least you know where you stand this is getting tiresome, could you imagine other captains doing that? The likes of Shearer, Gerrard or Keane??
Give us a break, please.
20 Danish_Magpie // May 13, 2008 at 20:35
Ian - yes and no. I remember when Owen was last linked away from the club (the last round of speculation) last summer with the get-out clause and all that, he came out in september or so and said that he had purposely never rejected the rumors publicly because then he would have to reject a rumor every time one came out (which for a player in balck and white is about twice a day..). Therefore he may well be staying and not have said anything yet. I am not saying im 100% certain he will stay, but I don’t think he will leave England, and I don’t think a top-4 side wants him, he wouldn’t go to Everton cuz of the Liverpool connection (I know he supported Everton as a child) and then what’s the point if you are leaving to go sideways? He is captain here, his family seems settled in the area and he will make as much money as anywhere else here. I think he will stay.

Exclusive, Chris Mort and the resident Daily Mail reporter have just met with Michael Owen. the negotiation went like this:
Mort: Michael your 29 with a bad injury record and you’ve lost your pace. We think your only worth £80k a week
Owen: I’m your club captain and my goals saved you from relegation. I would rather leave than accept £80k a week
Mort: We’ve had to pay all your medical bills over the last 3 years you owe us some loyalty. How about a 4 year deal taking you till your aged 33 on £90k a week
Owen: agreed, I’ll sign now ……
Daily Mail reporter: great, thanks for letting me attend all your meetings Chris !!

Ive been a big fan of owen ever since he came to newcastle,I think its great we have a player of his quality… The main problem is that the southern based press have never understood Michael Owen playing for Newcastle United, and they will try everyway to get him out of toon…we once had Englands number 1 in Shearer now we have englands number 1 in Owen…and with out a doubt Owen still should be Englands number one as there isnt a better goalscorer then owen for England,Rooney cant play that roll………One thing that I laugh at is how so many people still slag Owen off for the wages he receives….It isnt his fault he was offered the money he was offered…if you were offered a job and then another job for more money came along Im sure I know what you would do….Another thing, people have forgot when he was injured newcastle didnt pay his wages…As it was reported newcastle received £6 million in total from the F.A…That is a figure that actually came out from the club itself…We need Owen next season as he was one of the players who left the season just gone right in form,Its about time those fans still doubting him actually started getting behind him.. Since playing the roll he has been and becoming captain Owen has looked a different player and COMMITTED…Yes Id love him to come out and say he is staying but he is a private person and he will say so at the right time…I wouldve loved it if he had signed 2 year extension when he came back from injury to make up for the 2 years he missed,He still might we’ll just have to wait and see..
23 Tom_Toon // May 13, 2008 at 20:51
To be fair to Owen the FA have paid all his wages and medical bills over the past 2 years.
24 Newcastle United. // May 13, 2008 at 20:51
Stop being so negative man lads. Outside the top four we’re as big as any. He wont go to a top four club. We will keep him, He wants too. You can tell since King Kev took ower that Owen’s game has totally changed, Chasing back, Going in for tackles, Making runs, Scoring goals for fun again. World class player once again. Newcastle need this more that anything. This will only attract good players if we have the likes of Michael Owen as our captian and number 10.
Be optimistic, Keep the faith, Next season is the season lads.

i cant see him leaving for two reasons - 1. i dont think anybody outside the top four could match his wages, and more importantly 2. i think he’s a decent bloke who realises he’s not at his peak anymore and he knows he owes us some loyalty
on the subject of transfers i think we need to be looking at 2 pools of players - those who will immediately improve the first eleven, and those who will beef up the squad, add competition and challenge for places over the season
i think we need a quality centre-back, a replacement for butt, a replacement for geremi, and a replacement for viduka. my choices would be:
centre-back:
dunne - great value, experience, consistency
cuellar - exceptional in europe
garay - superb but pricey and sought-after
kompany - slighlty cheaper and easier than garay
butt replacement:
mbia - looked class in the african cup
toulalan - expensive, would he come?
veloso - expensive, would he come?
geremi replacement:
arshavin - class against england
biyaletdinov - looks quality, cheaper option?
bentley - quality, could we persuade him/them?
v.d.vaart - great player, a keegan type!!
viduka replacement:
ashton - would w.ham sell him?
gomis - can he hack it? looks good to me
huntelaar - arguably bigger than owen coup!!
santa-cruz - again, could we persuade them??
squad players - giles barnes, seb larsson, shorey, doyle, kitson - players of this calibre. all good prem players, wouldnt cost a fortune and would certainly give us strength in depth

He will stay. The only two club that are interested in him right now are Everton and United. Could you imagine him at either of those two?
He would be hated by Newcastle and Liverpool supporters. Plus he would make himself into nothing more than a mercenary. He has spent over half his time with the toon injured. He owes this club a little loyalty. I think we will get it.

Fair enough but offer him a two year contract and bring him on for 30 minutes every other week!
35 Reb // May 13, 2008 at 22:22
What does everyone want him to say? He’s said he’s happy at Newcastle. He’s said he hopes the contract negotiations are settled before he goes on holiday. He’s said he’s looking forward to more under Keegan, and taking the club back to “where it belongs”. The ONLY thing he hasn’t said is a guarantee that he WILL stay. No doubt, a lesson harshly learned in 2004. He said he’d stay at Liverpool, he would sign a new contract, and events transpired such that he ended up going to Madrid. Thus, Liverpool fans villify him as a traitor and a liar. So, four years on, the lad isn’t going to make the same mistake.
And, uhm, yes Gerrard has done worse as captain. Remember Chelsea-gate — two summers running? I do.
On the other note, Ian, Dave Kitson played the entire season, fully fit, iirc. And in a team that didn’t play defensively. All the strikers this season were first hampered by Allardyce’s style, and then by absences: Owen with just Smith for a partner, Viduka by injuries, and Martins away to the ACoN. If you are seriously comparing Kitson and Owen, you need your head checked mate.
Kitson — 0 caps, 0 goals for his country. 20+ top-flight league goals in his career.
Owen — 89 caps, 40 goals for his country. 136 league goals in his career.

As per usual MO makes some non-committal comments and we are to assume that he is staying? He is just stating the obvious here. Nowhere do I hear him say “Newcastle has a bright future and I am on board through the thick and the thin”. If he gets a better offer he is gone, and I don’t blame him, he is an injury prone player whom has a limited number of years left. I hope he stays, but will not be shocked if he does not. If he goes we will have a heck of a hole to fill, so they better get it resolved quickly.
On another note with all of this bashing of the South going on in here, how can we expect any different coming the other way? Come on lads, let’s keep it about NUFC on here not about how all southerners are c*s.
54 Aussie dave // May 14, 2008 at 3:56
This 80k a week wages cap must be absolute shite. It contradicts everything Ashley, Mort and Keegan are talking about.
We will not be able to compete at the top if this is introduced. Without european football, and being a non London club, Newcastle have to attract players via other means. History, stadium size, nice city are all well and good, but we will not attract the best players if the most they can earn is 80K a week.
We need to price teams out of transfer battles much like we did with Owen in the first place.
If a quality player is available we have to offer him much more than the top four otherwise they wont come.
Even if we dont get them we make the other clubs spend more of their budgets meaning they have less available for other targets.
What do think?
55 KKN39 // May 14, 2008 at 4:55
think KK has saved MO’s career by reshape him as 3rd stiker or advancing AM. he’s lost some pace and certainly not known for his creativity and dribbling so he can only play w/ his vision, clever running, goal instinct. there’s no chance for him to play this way among the top 4. overseas club don’t want and can’t afford him. only Toffees, Portsmouth, ManCity, WestHam look possible suitors in this world but are hardly any more sexy than we are. doubt they can afford even just 80K anyway. so MO will stay w/ us. however in a years’ time maybe we’d just mourn why he didnt go in ‘08 summer. hope he’ll prove me wrong.
56 Ian // May 14, 2008 at 8:37
Reb, I am simply pointing out Kitson and his number of goals compared to owen this season and the cost to our club compared to the cost of Kitson to his, it makes you wonder how many goals Kitson could score in a better team, I remember when Andy Johnson was at QPR and no-one wanted him, we could have signed him or Anelka or both and we didnt, the next season he was one of the premierships top scorers, this year he is one goal behind Owen with a really bad injury season and owen has had almost an injury free season. Owen is good, we want him, but putting it bluntly he isnt the superstar he was.
Owen has a good history, but who wants to pay for history except a museum??
He needs to speak up over the next couple of weeks, he is the captain after all not just a player he should set an example even if it is to say that he play out his contract if they dont agree a deal.

Toon Pair In Dressing-Room Brawl
Newcastle United stars Charles N’Zogbia and Abdoulaye Faye were reportedly involved in a pre-match brawl on the final day of the season …
The pair had to be dragged apart by team-mates after a heated dispute turned physical only hours before Toon’s clash against Everton on Sunday.
The row occurred over the wage disparity between players signed by former chairman Freddy Shepherd and those signed by new owner Mike Ashley – N’Zogbia arriving at St James’ Park under the former, Faye under the later.
“There has been a lot of bickering about wages,†said an inside source. “Charles can be a wind-up merchant and Abdoulaye didn’t take very kindly to it.
“It was incredibly heated but the other players calmed them down.â€
N’Zogbia has been linked a move away from Newcastle this summer, as the 21-year-old winger, who has been played as a stop-gap defender for much of the season, now finds himself surplus to the requirements of Kevin Keegan’s 4-3-3 formation.

Question is, is it true the club is about to impose an eighty thousand a week cap, if so that signifies a considerable reduction in wages for MO.
Question two, would he find a club who would pay him what he is now receiving at Utd. or even eighty thousand for that matter?
Face it he is not the hot property he was five years ago, with a lot of mileage and injury time.
