Newcastle Transfer Gossip For Today

May 13th, 2008 by Ed Harrison · 68 Comments

Various bits of transfer gossip involving Newcastle United today.

nufc-crest.png

  • News today that we may be interested in 18 year-old French defender Aristote Lusinga. He is around 5′11″ tall and has just turned 18 years old and is currently at French club Nantes. We like the idea of bringing another 4-5 top youngsters to the club in the summer
  • News is still circulating on Wearside that Sunderland boss Roy Keane will make a bid for Irish international Damien Duff, his former team mate on the Ireland team, sometime this summer – but we don’t think we want to let Duff go yet.
  • News that Kevin Keegan may want to put in a £3M bid for Boa Morte, from West Ham. We remember well when Souness was at the club, and we were going to buy this guy for about 6 months, but we didn’t because he was too expensive – that’s when he was then at Fulham.
Keegan and Newcastle may be able to get the best out of Boa Morte where West Ham could not – but he’s hardly the player that would improve our squad much.
  • Lots of news today saying that Michael Owen will not take a wage cut to £80K/week at Newcastle, and we don’t believe a word of it. Remember, no player at Arsenal makes more than £80K a week.
Japan’s JEF United Chiba are said to be planning an audacious swoop for the England striker – well it’s only audacious because it’s so ridiculous.
The J-League club have just unveiled former Liverpool first-team coach Alex Miller as their new manager and believe Owen can solve the team’s current goal-scoring problems. But why on earth would Owen go there?
Also Everton are the latest club who may be interested in Michael, but since they wouldn’t be able to pay Michael even £80K/week, that seems nonsense again. So sorry to spoil all these stories. :D
  • The news that Liverpool are being linked with a £3M move for Newcastle’s 22 year-old winger James Milner, which has been reported over the last day or two is daft.
We paid more than £3M for James, and he’s twice the player he was. The news is that John Arne Riise is going the other way as part of the deal. Give me a break, why would we ever want to let James go?  But we wouldn’t mind seeing Riise at Newcastle next season.
  • Newcastle and Tottenham are said to both be after Richard Dunne. Why do Spurs want every player Newcastle is pursuing? But if that’s true we’d hate to lose a 3rd player in a head to head with the London club.
  • Some of our readers reported seeing Peter Crouch in Newcastle yesterday. He’s kind of a big guy to not recognize, but we have no idea of the truth of these sightings.
  • A supposedly £6M move for Michael Dawson of Tottenham is old news, but Michael should be getting worried that Tottenham are looking to bring in Richard Dunne from Man City, to partner Jonathan Woodgate at the back

That’s about as much as we can take for today.

Take these transfer dealings (or gossip) with a pinch of salt, but you never know – one of them may actually be true one of these days. :D

Comments welcome.

    They all seem a certainty!

Sarcasm, the lowest form of humour.

  • 2 Davies // May 13, 2008 at 11:51 AM

Nobody’s mentioned Davids. Nearly fell over when I saw that one.

    Seriously?

  • 3 geordie in taipei // May 13, 2008 at 11:56 AM

Its always o exciting to read the gossip but none of it is ever true and as far as todays goes, id say its all complete and utter Bo@@ocks

  • 4 MagpiePies // May 13, 2008 at 11:59 AM

Apparently French radio is full of Gomis to Newcastle stories this morning.

Same story has just come up on Newsnow from the Mail (crap rag I know!).

  • 5 Leo // May 13, 2008 at 11:59 AM

thats made me feel ill again, damn i feel like am driving through seaham again

  • 6 Eric // May 13, 2008 at 12:00 PM

It was not Crouch it was Carroll out on the tiles? Dunne to Spurs? Hope so! Wrote to the Daily Mail editor about the Owen piece. Asked for substantiated evidence and facts. Wanted to know which of their reporters were in the KK meeting, and which one was handling negotiations with Everton. Pointed out the article was in breach (possibly) of the Press Commission Code, sections 1 (i) and 1(iii). Had enough – had to fire back at the bullshite! The French lad would be one for the future but Boa Morte for the past.

  • 7 Nell // May 13, 2008 at 12:01 PM

Owen will stay i have heard dean ashton for ten million

  • 8 Nell // May 13, 2008 at 12:04 PM

Boa morte is shite so is dunne lets not waste money on players like this

  • 9 Bill F // May 13, 2008 at 12:05 PM

Oh I so really hope that the spuds get Dunne they deserve him.

We were talking about Davids on an earlier blog, I would prefer him to Dunne even though he is much older.

Boa Morte wouldn’t be the worst signing we could make and I would be happy if we got Riise but not as a swap for Milner.

  • 10 SydneyToon // May 13, 2008 at 12:05 PM

Now that we can expect less stories until the (great) signings take place…perhaps it is time Ed to reintroduce the funny quotes and beautiful women?

  • 11 GM // May 13, 2008 at 12:06 PM

Utter bollox, dont think i need add to that!!!! there are more odds on the daily scrag replying to Eric than any of the above happening

  • 12 ginkoh // May 13, 2008 at 12:07 PM

Tottenham fear us to kick them off the game so they will try to hijack every good player who come to us and leave only bad signing this summer. haha

It’s the good plan to annoy us but don’t furious so much because Spuds cannot sign every players on the world and if next season they cannot play better football diaster for them for sure. Pressure on them.

Every team will up their standard next season. Sure that some team will be victim underachieve club even they’re good squad. But who ? i dunno too.

For my opinion, this summer will be quiet summer for us. We will lose some good players and get some proper youngster, may be some of experience. Big signings ? I don’t think we don’t have big surprise this summer.

  • 13 ToonKing // May 13, 2008 at 12:11 PM

the japanese dudes being after Owen just made my day……what a load of bollox, how can they publish this bs……ahahahah

  • 14 toonoholic // May 13, 2008 at 12:18 PM

manchester united might sign cardiff midfielder aaron ramsey , any idea on that ?

  • 15 SB // May 13, 2008 at 12:18 PM

haha, I knew some deluded teams from Japan or US would come for him after that wage-cut BS.

This is a pretty interesting article…i would be very surprised if we don’t bid for Gomis after tracking him for so long

  • 17 figsdad // May 13, 2008 at 12:21 PM

the only news i would be happy with would be sunderland going for duff maybe they can go for smith and shola as well..

  • 18 dougnufc // May 13, 2008 at 12:26 PM

Hate it if we go for Boa Morte, he would be useless because he is not much different from what we have now

  • 19 figsdad // May 13, 2008 at 12:49 PM

Gomis They want like 18mil for him no thanks.

  • 20 Jon // May 13, 2008 at 12:55 PM

Please tell me this is true!

  • 22 James // May 13, 2008 at 12:56 PM

The Gomis deal could be softened by sending Rozenhal there as part of the package. He says he misses French football so send him back and get Gomis for less money as a result.

As for the Owen nonsense the media keep printing, ignore it all – he will sign a new deal before he goes on holiday next month.

The three “Wise” men seemend to be eying up a number of players at the moment, and I do think we are going to sign someone by the weekend, just no idea who.

  • 23 ObaFan2 // May 13, 2008 at 1:20 PM

KKK, cheers mate made me laugh at this bit :

“Versatile Smith looks like being one of United’s most sought-after players, despite failing to find the net in his first season at the club”

  • 24 9 Shearer // May 13, 2008 at 1:32 PM

We dont have to look 4 many players 4 next season what i can say is that we have a very big squard that can even win the treble ( FA, Carling and the league). They all have to be fit. Owen, Martins and Tarylor wil get their cotracts. We have a bigger squard than Arsenal what we lacked was a good manager and had alot of injuries. Keegan is stil with us. We need only three defenders and one good striker.

    In:
    Carlos Cuellar(CB)- very strong
    Shorey(LB)- more attacking than Enrique
    Richard Dunne(CB)- Knows the premiership
Anelka(ST)- only one that do it like Viduka and faster

    Out:
    Cacapa(CB)-aging
Geremi(RM)-too slow 4 keegan plans.Emre wil take the freekicks.
    Diatta(CB)- not a chance
    Roz(CB)- cant tankle

    Newcastle Squard 2008/2009:
    Goal keepers:
Shay Given, Stephen Harper, Fraser Forster

    Defenders:
Jose Enrique, Habib Beye, Abdoulaye Faye Steven Taylor, David Edgar, Carlos Cuellar, Shorey, Richard Dunne

    Midfielders:
Emre Belozoglu, Joey Barton, Damien Duff Charles N’Zogbia, James Milner, Alan Smith Nicholas Butt, Kazenga LuaLua

    Strikers:
Obafemi Martins, Michael Owen, Mark Viduka Andrew Carroll, Nicholas Anelka.

With this squard no one can stop keeping all of them fit and on form will lead us to a trophy next season and into the big four.

  • 25 KKK // May 13, 2008 at 1:33 PM

Well Fabio Rochemback is leaving brough for Sporting Lisburn so there could well be some truth in the story.

Southgate could be looking to replace him with Smith. Keegan must beable to see that Smith is absolutely useless.

  • 26 ScottyT // May 13, 2008 at 1:34 PM

toon king same here… hahahahaa owen to ‘jeff united’ wat a name. other clubs reportedly linked have been ‘bob county’, ‘terry town’, ‘rob rovers’ and ‘peter city’ . the speculation gets more ridiculous all the time!

  • 27 steve // May 13, 2008 at 1:39 PM

Dawson and Taylor at the back would be a disaster!

  • 28 Nick Dryden // May 13, 2008 at 1:39 PM

ed you really need to give it up with Riise and Duff. these are over paid, has been, perma crocks. You are really speaking for yourself, saying we would like them here. most of us certain ly wouldn’t. Dunne is nothing special either. Top players like Torres always roast him

  • 29 James // May 13, 2008 at 1:41 PM

    We need the following players

CB – experienced and Taylor can learn from

    LB – cover for Jose

    LW – if NZogbia leaves

AM – creative player to light up the Toon

RW – Milner and Geremi cannot cross

ST – Striker to cover for one of the front three

But I’d welcome more, because our bench never has any match winners on it.

  • 30 scottish mag // May 13, 2008 at 1:44 PM

man u have apparently prepared a bid in for veloso

chelsea and arsenal are in talks with moutinho’s agent

so looks like we wont get them

but we are challenging liverpool for wayne bridge

and i dont care how much we pay for gomis as long as we get him, he will be the next big thing and his price will rocket in the next couple of seasons, glad to hear KK and that have flown out to see him again and possibly make their move

  • 31 nufctj // May 13, 2008 at 1:46 PM

Word on Tyneside is that Santiago Munez and Gavin Harris are due to return to the club from Real Madrid. Seems they miss Michael Owen, and of course Santiago misses his girl. Wouldn’t you?

  • 32 Micky Toon // May 13, 2008 at 1:46 PM

The papers hate the fact that Owen plays for us and they try their hardest to make it look like he is leaving the club. They know Geordies look out for and digest every little tidbit that is thrown out there about NUFC, so they just keep stirring.

Here’s my rumour of the day. Keegan to walk because he is not in charge of signing new players and Sven to join instead.

I’ll be a tenner that is an “ALAN OLIVER EXCLUSIVE”, very soon.

  • 33 John // May 13, 2008 at 1:48 PM

where did you find that out scott Magg, about velosa?

  • 34 Micky Toon // May 13, 2008 at 1:49 PM

James – cover for Jose? The lad is crap. He was seriously shown up for what he was. We need someone who he is cover for. Wayne Bridge for example.

Although I better watch what I say about Wayne Bridge, because the last time I mentioned his name on here as a good signing all the no nothings told me I was talking crap.

  • 35 nufctj // May 13, 2008 at 1:50 PM

Micky, hate to say it but I would make that move in a heart beat. KK out, Sven in.

man u are preparing a bid 4 veloso and moutinho’s agent is in talks with arsenal and chelsea

  • 39 James // May 13, 2008 at 1:57 PM

Micky Toon – I watched most of Jose’s games for Villeral when I was living in Spain and the lad is a terrific left back. The problem he has had is what all foreign players have – adjusting to the speed of the premiership.

Vidic and Emre used to be slated in their first season at Old Trafford, now they are praised.

Next season Jose will gradually develop into the top class left back he is.

Wayne Bridge has turned us down twice. Don’t think we’ll get him now.

  • 40 John // May 13, 2008 at 1:59 PM

looks complete speculation again from triBULL …There not the most reliable of sites. Im hoping its not true , if so, we can kiss that one good bye aswell….

  • 42 James // May 13, 2008 at 2:01 PM

    Geordie Nick – I meant Evra :-)

  • 43 Neilos // May 13, 2008 at 2:08 PM

Keegan has been spotted watching Gomis playing against PSG according to Talk sport and their french reporter

  • 44 Ant // May 13, 2008 at 2:09 PM

Micky toon, you just described one of our core team members for the next few seasons (possibly more) as crap.

Enrique will be part of the young up-and-coming team we will be fielding over the nex few seasons. We will have to fade out Barton, Butt, Geremi(I won’t say Beye because I love him, everything that is RIGHT with football that lad, cafu was 38 when he left Milan wasn’t he?) and our team will be full of under-25’s.

With our current talent in Enrique, Oba, Zog(if he stays) Jinky Jimmy, Edgar(will have to replace Taylor when people realise Taylor is a drugged-up geordie Bramble), Krul all ready for first-team footbal after fairly lengthy experience(bar Edgar) we should be able to mould our team. 4-3-3 and 4-4-2 would work with these players fitting perfectly in both so let’s see.

Hopefully Beye’s legs won’t give out on him til he’s 35+ so we could have plenty of good times left with that lad.

    He certainly doesn’t seem aged.

So I’d say we need a centre mid under 23 with experience in top-level football and we should be sitting pretty for the next 5 seasons (Let’s hope Beye can last as long as Maldini, Cafu, Campbell etc.)

Top of the league in 5 years for me…If we keep those players(if Milner can’t speed up a bit he’s hitting the bench/transfer) I’m thinking a league title in the forseeable future.

Money can’t buy you a team, and if we have Oba, José, Charlie, Milner, and a mystery midfielder(Veloso possibly…keep the faith) we will have an established basis for our attack and the back 4 should sort itself out, Faye is top-drawer, handles everything he’s thrown.

Edgar, Kadar, Tozer are all looking to step in so here’s hoping boys!

    Anyone fancy the first quadruple??

Manure of the 90s…Toon of the present!

  • 45 KKK // May 13, 2008 at 2:09 PM

Wouldn’t be surprised if Veloso went to utd with his old team mates ronaldo and nani already there. Really would love to get this guy though, looks immense and at 23 he can only get better.

  • 46 Graeme // May 13, 2008 at 2:11 PM

Give it a couple of weeks and it will be easier to list the players we haven’t been linked with.

I’ll believe any signing when I see the player being met by KK & Mort at SJP!!!

  • 47 scottish mag // May 13, 2008 at 2:14 PM

KKK does your name mean u are part of a certain group, also nani has said today he would welcome veloso and moutinho in england.

  • 48 KKK // May 13, 2008 at 2:18 PM

Yea scottish mag means i am part of the King Kevin Keegan supporters group.

  • 49 Danish_Magpie // May 13, 2008 at 2:20 PM

    http://www.teamtalk.com/football/story/0,16368,2483_3559871,00.html

I am not saying it’s the sensible thing to do, but imagine the lift it would give around St. James’ to Keegan, the players, the fans etc. if Mort/Ashley announced something similar. It may drive prices up some, but prices seem high for us anyways..

  • 50 KKK // May 13, 2008 at 2:31 PM

I think it would be such a bad idea if Mort announced the size of our transfer budget. Clubs would just hold us to ransom for players. We will get our lift when Keegan gets us our quality signings. Niall Quinn is seriously going to regret that announcement.

  • 51 geordie nick // May 13, 2008 at 2:31 PM

dont know why man u interested in veloso with sholes, carrick, anderson, hargreaves and fletcher already at the club, guess they just wanna keep buying all sportings young stars. if they do get him surely theyll hav to sell one of ther cm’s

  • 52 geordie nick // May 13, 2008 at 2:36 PM

yh im with u on tht kkk, im happy for evryone to think we only hav 20mil to spend then thy wont hold us to ransom, hopefully well get the majority of our signings made within a week of each other cos if we start buying players for 10+mil every week or so ppl will maybe realise tht we hav lot more to spend than we r letting on and then start jacking prices up

  • 53 geordie nick // May 13, 2008 at 2:37 PM

well thts assumin tht we do have a lot more than 20mil to spend, fingers crossed!!!

  • 54 KKK // May 13, 2008 at 2:48 PM

I actually don’t think that Keegan has a budget as such and he is allowed to pursue any players he wishes.

But he knows that we have to build the squad up slowly and that is why hes only calling for 3 or 4 quality players and a few more young prospects.

If he did a complete over haul of the squad as Allardyce did it would just unbalance things again and we would have another transition season. Which of course no one wants.

  • 55 chuck // May 13, 2008 at 3:29 PM

Let Owen go, never seemed like he wanted to be at St. James to begin with , here for the dosh!
Get Bent and Gomis to play alongside Martins plus gradually feed in Carroll, theres your strike force for the forseeable future.
Veloso to boss the midfield, Cuellar to fill the defensive centerback role, or maybe Dunne.
Couple of backs, play maker midfielder, Bobs your uncle!

  • 56 Pete // May 13, 2008 at 4:31 PM

Let Duff and Smith go , even better if its to Sunderland and Boro.

  • 57 KKK // May 13, 2008 at 4:35 PM

I think this article shows Owens commitment to Newcastle. There is no way he is leaving in the summer. His new contract will be signed by the end of the week.

boa morte no thank you hes passed it
smith to rangers borough please please say this is true.
owen hope this bollouks isnt true i would hate to see him leave he wont go to everton and he wud have to have some balls to sign for man utd as he wud be the most hated person in england as liverpool n newcastle wud hate him forever.
french kid dont no but wud b nice to see some youngsters
james milner for riise on ur bike liverpool no chance milners going nowere and it wud take alot more than riise plus 3m.
richard dunne YES PLEASE exackly wot we need
michael dawson wudnt say no a gud yougster
peter crouch i think wud be a great signing but not for 15m about 10 at the most
i still think thers more to see from dammy duff even though he has had 2 poor seasons so i think we shud keep hold of him
and also all the best to peter ramage hes been a gud servant for the clu always puts in 110%

  • 59 Spot The Zebra // May 13, 2008 at 4:42 PM

Just to add to some points made here…
Having seen both of our young keepers play i believe Fraser Forster has even more potential than Tim Krul. However both are fine prospects and i can see Shay moving on soon as we need to start giving these lads the odd game in the first team.I have no doubt that Forster is a future England International and a Toon keeper for many many years.
Also Beye may be getting on but he can also play centre of defence so this is an option if he earns a new contract at Newcastle and ends up playing into his late thirties for us.
We need to keep Owen who has shown his class whenever he is fit and has recently been played in a position where he is likely to pick up less injuries. The problem with lowering his wages though is that he now comes within reach of teams like Everton who can match the £80,000 p.w. as well as offering him European football and a base in NW England.

  • 60 Geordie Gerrard 7 // May 13, 2008 at 4:52 PM

orite lads, Dont listen to nothing from tribal, its a load of rubbish, also sporting are looking for a replacement for veloso, but that is because
a few clubs are intrested but we are the only ones to make a concrete bid. also just on the radio iv heard we have been in talks with gomis?? anyone clarify this?

  • 62 Obafan // May 13, 2008 at 10:21 PM

Okay, here we go;, the season is over (thank God, it is one to forget ASAP, especially the mid part of it). Now the rumours are going to start and that is a nice period. I like to follow tThe thing is how do you know if a rumour is true or not? Untill the players is presented in black n white you simply don’t know it. So make a game of it and guess which links are true or false. he news about who is being linked with the Toon. Let us hope that whoever KK gets that it is someone who can strangthen our team cause that is a must.

I hope the stories about GOMIS are true, he is a huge prospect for the future, aswell as Arshavin. I hope I see KK in the public tomorrow during the UEFA final.
Perhaps for both Cuellar and Arshavin ;-)
