punk skunk – out of hand? nah. off topic, yes but certainly not out of hand. i for one was not in the least offended. I personally love to debate (preferably over a nice brown ale in a decent pub which are few and far between here!). I would imagine you me and angryman might have a great time chatting and arguing in real-time, real-space…

I didn’t call you Adolf Hitler I just likened your view to ‘racism and fun being different’.
I have come on here to talk football but take a dislike to this stereotype name calling, I’m sure your Jewish forefathers had to tolerate such abuse and would agree that it totally out of order.
As for you calling your french friends frogs and them laughing at it doesn’t make it right nor does it mean that they actually like your abusive remarks.

Punk Skunk – conceded, mate. Your point is true and valid, I simply get really sick of how it can be taken way too far. Here in canada pc rhetoric has gone so far that it really is like a totalitarianism of sorts. If – heaven forbid – anyone lets a little candour slip in public the media go immediately into a “moral high ground” frenzy. It just gets so frustrating… I for one will step back out of this “argument” now, just wanted to bring another POV, from someone of very mixed racial background.

As ScottyT reminds us this is about football and the toon. I am in no way saying that all us football fans are uncouth goons, but I certainly didn’t expect to find such sensitivity (to a remark that calls us frenchies “frogs”) here of all places.

BOT – I have always thought that MO’s loyalties have been unfairly questioned. I think he is class, on and off the pitch. I hope he redeems my faith in his integrity and stays at SJP even if it means “taking one for the team”.

C’mon Mike! Show the world that you can still be the man to lift a mid-table team to Europe!!!!

punk skunk – yes this is a public forum, but that’s not the debate here. The debate remains whether calling french people “frogs” is racism or not. I am sure that 99% of frenchies would agree that it is not in any way offensive. Comes from our appreciation of “cuisses de grenouilles” actually. Like calling a german a “kraut” (dad’s german so don’t try calling me out on that either…) – comes from our appreciation of sauerkraut. Not racism, slang.

Anyways, saying that the way you act with friends and the way you act on a public forum should be different is a sad statement on today’s society. It’s calling people to be untrue. “Be one way in one circumstance and another way in another…” or “You’re allowed to think or speak in anyway you please – even if it is totally wrong – but DO NOT show your true colours in public.” How would we ever really get to know each other?! Debate is dead?

Someone already made reference to Hitler. One thing that characterised his “reign” was that people were unable to say in public what they really thought and felt. Scary parallels with today’s Britain, actually…

I respect angryman’s integrity – he says that he speaks like this amongst his real-world friends and he speaks like it here. Nothing to hide.
