Middlesbrough Interested in Milner – Why?

There are many reports in the papers this morning, that Middlesbrough manager Gareth Southgate is hoping to persuade Newcastle United to sell James Milner.

James Milner – hopefully going nowhere

Some stories say that Middlesbrough want Milner to replace Gary O’Neil, if he leaves the club in the summer to return to the south, as expected.

Apparently O’Neil’s family have not settled since his £5m move from Portsmouth last summer.

The Middlesbrough manager is no doubt a big admirer of the Newcastle midfielder, but we’d be surprised if any of these stories are true.

Of course all the stories point to the fact that James was not in the Newcastle team that went on an unbeaten 7 game streak – but for most of that time James had his foot injury.

No, we’d be surprised if Kevin is even thinking of letting 22 year-old Milner leave Newcastle.

The boy has played really well over the last 2 seasons, and he’s only going to get better.

And some of the fees mentioned – like £5M – are ridiculous, given we paid around £4M for James four years ago from Leeds United, and since then he has played over 30 times for the England Under-21 side, and played over 100 times for Newcastle.

Keegan has already stated he wants to keep all his players and the 4-5 top players he wants to bring in are predicated on him not losing players.

Any player that he loses will need to be replaced.

Let’s hope James Milner is going nowhere.

What do you think about this?

Comments very welcome.

Boro want Milner? Okay. We’ll take Stewart Downing. Straight swap. Interested, still? Good. If not, just take a hike.

I doubt Milner would want to take a step back in his career..

Although he could be persuaded by their die hard fan..

If we can get enough of a fee for him I’d be tempted to sell. He is a great worker and a good player, but in my view will never be a top player. Unfortunately for all his hard work there is little end product and I think we could replace him with better. But that is the key – we should not sell unless and until we can replace him with better. Geremi is not the answer.

Could be true , Boro do have space in the squad
for a right sided player – on the bench for the reserve team because thats as far as he would get.

We shouldn’t even be thinking of replacing young players like milner, these are the players that squads should be built on. Plus, replacing milner is only going to raise the wage bill. Even without him on it we won’t get a better replacement for less.

get a big enough fee, say…. 8 mill, then snap there hand off. same as zogs, i would love to have wingers such as turan who can create something out of nothing and have bags of skill, i think zogs has that in his repitoir abit but his attitude is shite.

also ed, this site really is the best for us and your doing a smashing job as i have said before, we as fans are all contributing also, and i honestly dont think any other bunch of supporters would do this in england does anyone else?

I would keep Milner . I like him for his sheer all out effort and competitiveness. I don’t think he is ever going to be the greatest winger. The Final ball is just not there.

However if we maintain a 4-3-3 formation I’d have him as a forward in the Roster. We cannot expect the three we played there to be available / on form / fit for an entire season.

He started his career as a centre forward.

Rather him – than rotating Alan Smith into that role.

He is the sort of player KK needs to build the team on. Hes one of our most creative/flair player, and he is still very young. Exactly what the management wants the team to be built on.

Would be very shocking if he does leave.

I remember when people went beserk when we sold Andy Cole. Then look what happened. If Keegan sells Milner then he obviously isn’t good enough. I’d trust KK’s judgement any day. Milner’s goal return from midfield hasn’t been good enough – along with alot of other NUFC players. I’ll back KK whoever he sells because i know that he will bring in better.

He will not be sold stop worrying, He will be one of the most improved players next season and his Zogs end product is so much better than given credit for.

Sell Duff and Geremi, Keep Milner and N’Zogbia

“Let’s hope James Milner is going nowhere.”

James a a decent player but lacks the pace to be absolutely top notch. If he moves, he should be replaced by someone with blistering pace.
Newcastle NEED more pace so if James goes, so be it!

I can see that Milner is a favourite, but he isn’t that great, and he’s near his full potential.
We should get someone better, with more technique and flair.

For 7-8 mill, I sell him.

There is so much more talent his age if not younger English and from anywhere around the world Better than milner. I would offload him to boro, duff sunderland, smith anywhere and get young skill. Ramsey from cardiff I would love to replace smith, most the wingers we have been linked with are ten times better than milner and duff. Also does anyone know what happened to that young psg captain – center back?

Sell him!! Milner has a great work rate but his end product is nothing special. His dribbling is not that great and his crosses are just crap. However, he would make a great substitute. Not only he gets to play on the right but the lift too, which is a plus. If we could get 8 M for him and get a better player go for it. I would say let’s bid for Gamst Pedersen and Sebastian Larsson. We could get them both with 10 M.

joe cole become ‘joe cole’ when he’s 25-26..
anything can happern in 4 years.
    become crap or cream.

It would be a serious step up in class for the lad; I doubt he’s good enough for Boro. He’s better off staying where he is, there is absolutely no chance whtsoever of having to play in a final.
