Are Newcastle Really After Turan?

May 19th, 2008 · 189 Comments

There have been lots of news reported over the weekend, that Newcastle are close to trying to close a £8M deal for the young Turkish star, Arda Turan.

arda-turan-32.jpg

Arda Turan - are we really after him?

But in the local Newcastle Evening Chronicle this afternoon, Alan Oliver is reporting that Kevin Keegan is not interested in the player.

The piece where Oliver states this reads as follows:

Yet again United are being linked with all sorts of players, the latest being Galatasaray’s midfielder Arda Turan.

But the Keegan camp insist they have no interest in the Turkish international.

So we’re not sure what to make of this.

Maybe it’s a ruse to try to take the attention off the player, which would be good for the club, and then again it may even be true.

We’ll just have to wait and see if there are any further developments on this.

But if we are interested in the player then it seems to us, we will need to sign him within the next or two, before Spurs come in.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

Didn’t Alan Oliver once report that gypsies had overthrown the American government and that a 10-year old lad from Gosforth had swallowed Saturn?

I was talking to Beardsley in Tescos the other week and apparently Keegan and co. blame Oliver for blabbing about the Modric story before he had signed for us (and the rest is history). They are therefore giving him no-more information on their plans.

Could be wide of the mark but Beardsley was the one who told me to stick a few quid on Keegan returning at 14/1…….

  • 13 Fernando // May 19, 2008 at 14:13

instead of the word keegan he uses the keegan camp. who are these ppl that make up the keegan camp? this is some shitty journalism.

  • 14 GM // May 19, 2008 at 14:13

Dont believe a word of what anal oliver writes, i used to sit 2 desks away from him at the chron and he is a total tool…of massive proportions, he certainly took stick for not getting the KK appointment right, or even close, he should work for the southern press he is that incompetent.

  • 15 ToonTex // May 19, 2008 at 14:14

Transfer talk gives me tired head. I know its all there is currently, but until I see the photos of them in the shirt at the press conference, I don’t get my substantial hopes up.

Lets sign ONE player and go from there.

    Lordy.

If i worked at St. James park i would give Anal Oliver loads of Info, and i would make sure that info would be so wide of the mark that he would be the laughing stock inside the press halls too… The guy is awfull and needs to be stapped multible times with a spoon.

answer to the question, i guess not many people really know but most of us agree that we hope they are and hope they suceed in getting him

  • 30 geoffo // May 19, 2008 at 14:42

Denying an interest in this player is the right thing to do, we may be learning our lesson at last, blabbing to the press about transfer targets is NOT the way to go. Transfers are tricky, delicate affairs , with a lot of vagaries attached, best to move with stealth in my opinion.

I’ll just directly translate this interview with Adnan Polat, the Chairman of Galatasaray that was done today:

Polat said “No offers have been made to the club yet for Arda. Everyone’s just commenting on what the English newspapers are writing these days”.

To the question “What would you do if you were to receive a really high bid for Arda?” Polat replied “We’re not doing slave trading here. Of course Arda’s wishes would play a role on what decision would be taken on such an offer. The most important part is whether Arda wants this or not. If he has the will for such a thing to go ahead we will help him in whatever way we can. And then it’s up to the club who wants him to meet the conditions set by us. If everything works out fine in the end, Arda is free to go wherever he wants” he added.

Polat concluded his statement by saying “The important issue at hand here is for us to raise ‘another Arda’ from the ranks of our youth teams. For example, the youngster Aydin really seems to have earned our trust for the future”.

Hmmm… Looks like something’s up for sure though. The club seems to be open to any reasonable bids and it won’t be much of a surprise if Arda does take off.

  • 38 Geordie Gerrard7 // May 19, 2008 at 14:49

yes perhaps, we need some more news on turan

  • 39 Geordie Gerrard7 // May 19, 2008 at 14:51

soo then it was just his agent using us as a springboard then?

  • 40 scottish mag // May 19, 2008 at 14:52

looks like anal oliver may have been right

gs fan are gala in 45m of debt

  • 41 KKK // May 19, 2008 at 14:57

Gala are currently 40M in debt so even if they did have an offer from us they will be wanting as much money for Turan as they can possibly get so they are now basically inviting competition for him therefore encouraging a bidding war between clubs.

If we really are after Turan, Dennis and Tony had better get the deal done asap!

  • 42 Alan Oliver // May 19, 2008 at 14:57

I can exclusively reveal that any comments suggesting I am inaccurate with my reports are completely wide of the mark. A Newcastle United source told me today “I am a big fan of Alan Oliver, he is a great journalist”. Meanwhile Damien Duff has told his friend Stephen Carr he is plotting a move away from Tyneside. I was hidden behind a bush and heard everything.

  • 43 Bigchris // May 19, 2008 at 15:08

Why do you all hope we get him?, has anyone actually seen him play or knew who he was before Sunday?

You all seem to think he’s good without seeing him just because the cron says so, remember the cron also said Boumsong was good.

  • 44 Eric // May 19, 2008 at 15:10

Is Oliver implying the Keegan is camp? Did not know that Pedro shops in Tescos - was he on a scouting mission? It wasn’t the Tescos near White Hart Lane was it? Not sure about Turan - all of the big clubs are aware of him so whatever Oliver says won’t count for shite!

  • 45 Hammy // May 19, 2008 at 15:20

Pedro lives at Tesco’s at Kingston Park…….
PR man during the day, shelf stacker at night.

  • 46 Eric // May 19, 2008 at 15:21

I think an Oliver is a type of posh southern biscuit. Now he says Rangers are interested in Smith. Let’s hope he’s got that one right. Jump ship? Kick the flop overboard. Rangers you can have him. Oliver says also that Wolves are after Vokes. I hope his column has not gone and scuppered that one too. If we cannot compete with the likes of Wolves we really will have shite on our faces!

  • 47 Graeme // May 19, 2008 at 15:21

When he’s standing on the steps of SJP, in a black & white shirt, shaking Keegans hand, it will be true.

Until then, it will be easier to list the players we AINT being linked too - everyone and his dog and his dogs aunt is on his way to the toon at the moment!!!!

Ant - He works on the tills between 9 & 12 in the evening for a bit extra cash monday to wednesday.

In real life ive known him for a few years since he knocked my mate over when we were going to school. Sounds like one of Olivers stories I know but this one is true

  • 51 Hammy // May 19, 2008 at 15:27

The Sun are apparently after journalistic legend
Alan Oliver, he is highly coveted by the paper as they are looking to replace Shaun Custis as regional sports correspondant.

A Sun insider alledgedly told me:

“Alan Oliver makes Shaun Custis look like Kate Adie, his stories are sensational.”

No doubt once Oliver learns of this he will be shooting his muck in all directions…..

  • 52 GSfan // May 19, 2008 at 15:28

Yeah. Galatasaray have huge debts that’s near 40m indeed. It has been like this for over 8 years or so now though so it’s nothing new. I can safely say the club’s will is to wait until Euro 2008 is over and heat up any price war that interested clubs may have. This debt can definitely be seen as an incentive to sell him I’d bet.

Though when Polat mentions about no official bids having been made I doubt he means this also accounts to any talks that may have been going on. Judging by his tone and how he references to English newspapers, I’m almost sure there’s an English club out there who is interested in him but has yet to make an offer of any value (this is just my hypothesis of course). Can’t be absolutely sure this club is Newcastle though as there are no hints of the interested club being given. One thing’s for sure, he’s definitely looking forward to how Euro 2008 will turn out.

  • 56 GSfan // May 19, 2008 at 15:45

Well this source is from the newspaper Fanatik, the sports newspaper which sells the most daily in Turkey.

I checked out the GS fansite as well and the interview with the Chairman was on the headline. http://www.webaslan.com/haberler/27579.php So I can say this interview is definitely valid. You wouldn’t find a more reliable source than this :)

FEEL FREE TO DELETE MY POST newcastle are shite and shouldnt expect to sign any decent players this summer. all the good players will go to teams in europe and you will be left to sign the crap or the money grabbers like owen. The fact you are in a shit part of the country means you will also lose out to teams like west ham and fulham. Even sunderland w3ill spend more and will definately finish above you. Enjoy your summer of being linked with top class players but the rest of the country will be laughing at you again as you get your hopes up.

On a side note though Fanatik (the newspaper I linked) puts up all the transfer rumours as news as well. So the “just because it’s in the papers doesn’t mean it’s true” rule applies for any other news articles too.

However these guys also make their own interviews with Chairmans, players etc. which are exclusive to Fanatik so you can be absolutely sure these guys are quoting stuff right from the primary source itself when they’re making a report of their interviews.

  • 64 Micky Toon // May 19, 2008 at 16:33

Alan Oliver used to have Fat Freddy’s ear, since the fat controller was booted out he no longer has any access to the clubs and has to rely on the same “Club insider” and “a source close to Keegan” that every other paper uses for his info. In other words he just makes shit up. When papers don’t quote names you just know they have made it up.

  • 65 Geordie Gerrard7 // May 19, 2008 at 16:39

so another words this rumour is dead in the pan?

  • 66 humbeg streath // May 19, 2008 at 16:51

I am a turkish reporter in Newcastle checking on Emre. Mr Oliver is making up his story to protect Emre as everyone with Galatasaray knows he is strongly linked with them. Selling Turan to Newcastle united is the most likely possibility for galatasary. I can’t tell you my name but I can tell you that Newcastle will be paying Galatasary 2 million and Emre to get Turan.

  • 67 robertsa // May 19, 2008 at 16:54

  • 74 Toon1978 // May 19, 2008 at 17:50

toonoholic we need a few top signings to lift the fans from the doom and gloom of last season and we seem to be USED by other agents to start bidding wars. Its crap only builds up hope only to be let down. NOTHING seems to happen under M.Ashley what so ever.

  • 75 Gooderz // May 19, 2008 at 17:57

We don’t need ordinary players like Boa Morte in our squad as we’ve had plenty of them over the years.

When Keegan switched Owen into his depper role, he raved about Owen’s awareness, positioning etc and his general ability to keep posession. Of the current squad I can only think of Owen, Viduka and Milner who are capable of keeping the ball well.

We need players like that who either have the strength to keep the ball or the skill. That way we’ll see posession kept instead of a hopeful long ball when options are lacking.

Turan sounded as if he’d like to be a career player for Galatasaray, but of course pro athletes will say the darnedest things (their agents tell them to say). Soooo better question might be… would he be up for a loan move with a possible trade option clause in the event that things work out well for him at an English club?

  • 80 valle // May 19, 2008 at 18:33

Got SSN on and watching on here for any development but NOTHING i know it is early doors but NUFC need to sign players as soon as possible to stand any chance of grabbing some good players and the longer this goes on the more i think ASHLEY does not want to spend at all. I think he should stick to his shops paying his shop staff a pittance rather then dealing with multi million pound footballers. He need to get real this is not one of his shops on the high street. WAKE UP ASHLEY getting inpatient here lol.

More seriously - why do you allow these highly dodgy banners on your site Ed? And, good as the site is, I don’t believe this one when it suggests it’s had 2.5bn visitors…

  • 105 Taiwantoon // May 19, 2008 at 20:24

Gareth, I used to meet Beardsley quite often in Jesmond, I think he was there to pick up his kids. Well, but that was like 6 years ago…kind of very very long time ago. lol

I think it is only natural for many of us to become inpatient as we really are helpless fans who can only hope. The fact Ashley has not spent too much in the market since taking over only makes that even more worrying.

  • 106 Toon1978 // May 19, 2008 at 20:28

Gave up on SSN watchin the real hustle at the moment something Mr Ashley is also probably watching lol.

  • 107 Geordie Gerrard7 // May 19, 2008 at 20:41

toon1978- seriously mate, iv been watching ssn all day and nothing is ever going to happen. ssn is always the last source that knows anything about the toon

  • 108 Toon1978 // May 19, 2008 at 20:45

I see what you mean Geordie Gerrard. I’m sick as a parrot lol.

  • 109 Geordie Gerrard7 // May 19, 2008 at 20:51

lol sooo frustrating. id love just to pull pne out the bag someone like veloso or gomez

  • 110 Hadrian // May 19, 2008 at 20:57

just please god get all the transfers done and dusted so we are not hanging around like idiots till midnight on the last day .
ideally we should have players in before keegan starts work with the squad in pre season .

  • 111 Toon1978 // May 19, 2008 at 20:59

hahaha if it was as easy as that then i would have .C.RONALDO,VELOSO,ARSHIVAN,ARDA,MESSI,RONALDINHO,TERRY,GERRARD,HENRY, just to name a few lol.

  • 112 Geordie Gerrard7 // May 19, 2008 at 21:01

to be honest, i love being a toon fan just for the times like this, i think it would be boring if we just got anyone we wanted like chelsea or man u. anyone else agree?

  • 113 Toon1978 // May 19, 2008 at 21:08

Yeah i know what you mean but ONE massive signing would make me happy then the rest good signing ie the massive signing would be someone like GOMEZ the GERMAN kid and the other signings could be DUNNE,SHOREY,ARDA,SIDWELL and maybe a sneaky youngin called ZARATE lol

  • 114 nightfall // May 19, 2008 at 21:10

    Geordie Gerrard7 - i do

  • 115 Ross // May 19, 2008 at 21:13

GG7, i do sort of agree with you.
like, i love the thought of us potentially pulling a big name to the club, or even just our involvement in trying to buy them.
but then looking at the other side..if you’re a proper man u fan, chelsea fan, l’pool fan or whomever..it must be pretty pleasing knowing that the biggest and best in the world arent out your reach, and that they can help you win the league, the CL, etc etc.
but in saying that, i’d never swap the toon for anyone else, its all part of the fun.
(even if after 4,5,6 seasons of it, its not too fun anymore! haha)

  • 116 Geordie Gerrard7 // May 19, 2008 at 21:16

i think that would be perfect, but also i love it because we do pull off the odd massive signing. no other club could do this. my old man is a die hard chelsea fan, and he says it gets boring winning and signing massive players for massive fees who always end up flops. he loves newcastles old and new policy. but i dont know if he says that because all my other family are geordies, apart from his side of the family and him

  • 117 Geordie Gerrard7 // May 19, 2008 at 21:21

zarate would be class in a glass, i love the little fella

  • 118 KKK // May 19, 2008 at 21:30

Geordie Gerrard, im a big fan of wee Zarate, do you think he would do well out on the wing since he has been compared alot to Messi or do you think of him as more of an out and out striker?

  • 119 liamtoonbirchy // May 19, 2008 at 21:31

    campbell - free
    dunne - 5m
    shorey - 3m
    makoun - 7m
    steven davis - 4m
    turan - 8m + emre
zarate - loan with 8m option at end of loan
    mcfadden - 3m
    gomis - 10m

duff, cacapa and smith out, maybe milner?

trying to light up a glum day but seriously will ash splash the cash?

  • 120 Ross // May 19, 2008 at 21:31

i can imagine, shevchenko springs to mind immediatly. I have alot of mates who are manure fans and its just annoying listening to them talk about their team and football in general. Nobody’s ever good enough for them, unless they’re worlds best in the desired position, its just daft.
but like you say, i love how we can pull a name out the bag from nowhere that no one would ever expect us to sign, i just hope we can do it this summer…ideally i’d like to shock the rest of the prem on numerous occasions, with numerous quality players!

  • 121 Toonboy // May 19, 2008 at 21:32

any signing will be a good signing under kk,bring it on

  • 122 Geordie Gerrard7 // May 19, 2008 at 21:33

noooo way defo a kind of winger, great feet, great free-kick taker. what about you? yeah i see him as a kind of poor mans messi, not so poor-man though, just a cheaper more realistic signing.

  • 123 Geordie Gerrard7 // May 19, 2008 at 21:36

same as ross, i think this year will be our year, even if we win the carling cup i am going to go on a 1 month bender.

  • 124 broon ale // May 19, 2008 at 21:38

the season has just finished and already we have newcastle fans getting impatient for siginings. No wonder the media and fans of other clubs have a field day with us lot! You can sit on sky sports news all day but i would advise you all to be quite prepared to see no transfer activity untill at least early june. The mind boggles that we have fans telling the club to hurry up and sign this player after the next. Be gratefull that our club seems to be in good hands and lets see what happens.

  • 125 Toonboy // May 19, 2008 at 21:40

Gotta sign players before the euro’s start

  • 126 scottish mag // May 19, 2008 at 21:44

i met beardsley last year at the 0-0 draw with arsenal(not in tescos lol), i got hospitality for my bday and he came and gave me a signed ball, got a few photos too,

it was funny though because there was this guy with him in a fancy suite and he was on his mobile and was saying that they couldnt find duff and this was 15mins b4 kick off, then i met butt becuase he got man of the match

  • 127 KKK // May 19, 2008 at 21:46

yeah GG7 thinkin the same thing, he could be on the wing and cover our front line if there are ever any injuries. To think there is even the possibility of our midfield lookin like this next season is mind blowing.

    Turan/N’Zogbia_Veloso/Emre_Butt/Barton_Milner/Zarate

  • 128 Geordie Gerrard7 // May 19, 2008 at 21:48

i wish i could join the ” I met PEDRO in tescos” gang, but unfortunatley i cant

  • 129 Geordie Gerrard7 // May 19, 2008 at 21:49

would be 3rd best midfield in the prem, i just cant see them all coming off, i just live in hope

  • 130 Toon1978 // May 19, 2008 at 21:50

broonale what you say makes sense mate but 1. i do not watch SSN all day i work 0700 till 1600 on a Monday and the rest of the week work 0700 till 1800 so when i come in from work i spend time with my sons and wife then i jump on the laptop to see whats hapenning then if the wife LETS ME i will put SSN on for an hour or 2 lol.

  • 131 KKK // May 19, 2008 at 21:55

we’d have to spend at least 35M on the midfield alone to get that…not even sure we have that for the whole budget. But if anyone can pull off a miracle like that its Keegan.

  • 132 Ross // May 19, 2008 at 21:58

GG7, if we got to the carling cup final, i’d go on a bender!
obviously if we won it, the bender would be far, far more severe. i’d love us to do well in something this year though (obviously the league comes first) but a cup run would be brilliant, a cup win, and i dont quite know what i’d do.

  • 133 broon ale // May 19, 2008 at 21:59

toon 1978. I am founding member of that club!

  • 134 Geordie Gerrard7 // May 19, 2008 at 21:59

my routine before i snapped my ankle was, get home from work about half six-seven, have dinner, speak to missus for abit before she goes on the laptop to get activitys for her class the next day, while i go on my laptop and watch abit of ssn. but now its decorate the new house we moved into, jump on the laptop when i can, and have ssn or talk sport turned up loud while i paint or whatever i am doing. right al
