News was reported yesterday on the famed web-site of Newcastle fans www.nufc.com, that we are interested in Stuttgart’s 22 year-old forward Mario Gomez.

Mario Gomez - interest shown from Newcastle
www.nufc.com reported that Newcastle were at the Gottlieb-Daimler Stadium on Saturday evening, as Stuttgart played their last game of the season and got a 2-2 draw at home to Bielefeld.
It turns out that Gomez scored from the penalty spot as Stuttgart drew 2-2 and managed claimed an Intertoto spot. (remember them?).
The Riedlingen, Germany born player, who turns 23 in July, has played for Stuttgart 89 times and scored 39 goals, which is not not a bad return at all in terms of goals.
He signed a five year deal at Stuttgart last summer and scored 28 goals in 32 club appearances this season. Mario stands just under 6’3†tall and has so far played 9 times for Germany and scored 6 goals.
Gómez has recently earned the nickname of “Mr. Zuverlässig” (”Mr. Reliable”), because of his consistent goal-scoring ability, and is expected to be first choice for the German national side in Euro 2008.
From what we can tell, he seems a great emerging player, and we hope the rumors are true that we are indeed interested in the player.
Gómez has both German and Spanish nationality, but has played for all German youth national teams from age 17.
He made his debut for the German national football team against Switzerland on February 7, 2007.
What do you think?
Comments welcome.

isnt he like berbatov, a great fan of alan shearer?
5 Mag 4 Life // May 19, 2008 at 11:26
‘played for Stuttgart 89 times and scored 389 goals’ you sure that right ed?
sounds like a fantastic player to fill dukes boots…
sign turan, arshavin, shorey and cuellar and we could be a decent team to watch out for next season

“The Riedlingen, Germany born player, who turns 23 in July, has played for Stuttgart 89 times and scored 389 goals, not a bad return in goals.”

10 broon ale // May 19, 2008 at 11:32
There will be alot of specualtion over the next couple weeks as lots of players are now on thier hols so thier agents will start stiring. Nothing will happen until early July with these players.
Players representing their countrys in the euros willl find their current clubs reluctant to do deals before the tournament. This speculation will go on and on and a few on this forum will grow increasingly impatient (as nufc fans do) but everyone needs to realise agents and journalists put names in the frame to satisfy a number of agendas and the majority of those agendas will not involve the player pulling on a black and white shirt.
11 Marat18 // May 19, 2008 at 11:33
OMG!
this bloke has 4,37 goal ratio!
Ashley, break the bank!
he is gonna beat Big Al’s record in two seasons
12 Hadji // May 19, 2008 at 11:33
There’s absolutely no way we can get this guy for less than 25 mill pounds, the question is….is MA ready to spend that much on a single player.
I dont even wanna mention if he shines on Euro 2008 how many top clubs will be after him.
We do have a chance with Ciprian Marica though, and why we’ve never been linked with Brandao from Shaktar Donetsk.
13 niko // May 19, 2008 at 11:33
he is class on football manager
14 Tom_Toon // May 19, 2008 at 11:35
Marica is better than Smith but isnt scoring!
15 Davies // May 19, 2008 at 11:35
Clearly a typo gents, however, his strike rate is very good.
Unfortunately, I agree with Tom_Toon (and you’d be a foll not to!). We won’t get him.
16 Ross // May 19, 2008 at 11:37
sounds like great potential, but we do the same thing every transfer window as we have done for the past 10years! go out looking for loads of midfielders and strikers, WE NEED A DEFENCE! and have done for a long time. why wont nufc managers sort out the biggest problem we have got!!
17 ToonKing // May 19, 2008 at 11:37
he’s good but our chances of getting him are slim.
18 THELONGSHANKS // May 19, 2008 at 11:38

19 Mehzeb // May 19, 2008 at 11:40
Good prospect. He won’t be cheap, and we may not be able to lure him away from Germany.
20 Nev // May 19, 2008 at 11:41
389 goals ?
that sounds like some german stuttgart fan messin on wikipedia lol
hes rather good in real life , but will prob go bayern for a season or two before going to england/spain/italy
21 Mehzeb // May 19, 2008 at 11:41
I agree with ToonKing, our chances of getting him are slimmer than a French supermodel on a 3-week diet!
22 Leo // May 19, 2008 at 11:43
89 times and scored 389 goals
havent got a chance even if the record is not that good lol
23 Leo // May 19, 2008 at 11:46
Ross. everytime managers have said that they plan on solving our leaky defence they have failed… graham sounes sam alardyce etc… total failures if they had just played attacking football the fact our defence isnt great wouldnt have mattered
24 tony // May 19, 2008 at 11:46
king kev doesent need a defence remember
25 Marat18 // May 19, 2008 at 11:50
just for you guys having a better picture of him - his goal-scoring record is 39 league goals in 89 games and 52 in 112 total
but he’s improving each year. It was 0 in 2, then 0 in 10, 8 in 38, 16 in 30 year before, now 28 in 32.
26 Fernando // May 19, 2008 at 11:52
that scoring rate in a german league bodes well for future employers. if it was from the erividese it means shite
27 Fernando // May 19, 2008 at 12:00
Mario Gomez is 33 Arda turan is 66.. ooo next coming 99 who has 99 on their jersey.. Ronaldo?? haha
youtube doesn’t make him look good so to me that’s a good sign of a good player.
28 ToonKing // May 19, 2008 at 12:00
if he was from holland the 389 would not have been a typo. i could be a legend over there if i wanted
.
29 Kash2 // May 19, 2008 at 12:02
I’ve seen him play a few times on Setanta, and he reminds me alot of Big AL. He’s always on the shoulder of the last defender, and he’s a commanding figure up top! I’d love him to come, as he’ll bang in plenty of goals, but maybe Roque Santa Cruz is a more realistic target!
30 Tom_Toon // May 19, 2008 at 12:07
Henok ‘The Panther’ Goitom is available for 1.3 mil. Hes better than Smith and hes 6ft 5!
31 Fernando // May 19, 2008 at 12:08
id trade viduka for him.. plus alan smith.
32 Az // May 19, 2008 at 12:10
I guarentee we won’t even come close to signing this player or any other top rated player, if we even make an offer it will likely be below the asking price and the like of SPURS etc will come steaming in with the full amount.
The MODRIC carry on is a sign of the things to come……
33 ToonKing // May 19, 2008 at 12:11
come on Tom_Toon he’s not good enough.
34 Tom_Toon // May 19, 2008 at 12:13

arsenal want santa cruz, dont think we have a chance on him or gomez although omez would be a quality signing
is just me or are our scouts looking at strikers with somilar names gomis, gomez, i no im just talking crap now but if we got them both the commentators would get mixed up completely
38 Geordie Gerrard7 // May 19, 2008 at 12:35
lol scottish mag, dont worry, we wont sign both of them. gomez is quite alot like a berbatov siigning. i can see us getting someone like him as he is young. m.ashley wants worlds best youngsters, and if we bid around 32 million euros we will get him, wich works out about 23-24 mill doesnt it?

41 Eric // May 19, 2008 at 12:49
Another good player we will not get because he will not want to come. Other gossip says Dean Ashton is going from West Ham to Spurs. What is it about that club? What is Ramos doing - running an orphanage? If all the players they go for
end up at Spurs it will take them 2 seasons to make them into a team! Someone should tell those Daily Mail reporters only 11 on the pitch for a team. Or, more likely, they are so pissed at their time of scribbling they see double. Rather have Gomis. Is Smith part exchangeable with anybody? We all live in hope.

does anyone get the impression that Ashely doesnt care about spending money as long as they are young?
43 ELFER // May 19, 2008 at 12:55
I think we cannot attract him really! Too expensive and we should not buy players who are too expensive…I think he’s also settled in Stuttgart and if he decides to leave it would only be into the direction of spain…
44 scottish mag // May 19, 2008 at 13:10
don they want 50m or something for him anyway, we should just go for ronaldinho for 30m instead lol

nufcfan,
tbh I just haven’t seen Ashley spending too much yet, bar paying off our debts (but there are some sources claiming we still have some) he hardly spent any cash.
In January it was 5 not so expansive youngsters and in summer (Smith - 6, Barton - 5, Enrique - 7, Rozzy - 3, Faye - 2, Beye - 4. Dyer - 8, Parker - 6, Luque - 3, Hunty - 1, Solano - dunno, may be 4,) that’s only 5 mill spent!
That’s worrying me a bit.
even Keegan questions MA’s ambitions, and he is more aware of what’s going on there.

sorry about that but i think i know that he will be a very popular signing
62 Geordie Gerrard7 // May 19, 2008 at 13:49
i have been on here constantly for the past two months as i have broke my ankle and have had surgery on it,and signed off work, this is the most i have been excited about a player scottish mag, i was quite excited about modric, but i think this is more exciting about turan. have you seen what anal oliver has said in the chronicle
63 scottish mag // May 19, 2008 at 14:03
anal oliver speaks out his anus
64 chuck // May 19, 2008 at 14:05
Must say its confusing, one minute the Toon are leading the race to sign Turan , next minute I read the club was`never interested, we are looking at players in the French league, Portugal and Spain, its all very confusing and dissapointing, loosing interest.
65 irish_al // May 19, 2008 at 14:15
just because we have a slim chance of signing good young players does not mean we should not keep trying, if 1 in 20 came off it would still be worthwhile
66 i Toon // May 19, 2008 at 14:17
LOL Ed when are you going to tell the readers it is 89 app 39 goals i know so people call him Mr. Reliable and super Mario but 389 goals from 89 games in the Bundesliga really now plus Germany only plays 34 games a season that would mean if he plays every game in a season he would score something like over a 100 goals a season anyway i think Mario was quote saying he would relish the chance to play for Newcastle United if given the opportunity as he believes he would be more likey to play regularly rather than sit on the bench at Chelsea or Real Madrid clubs he has been link with he is a great player i have seen him play for Stuttgart he had 2 bad injuries in 2007 but he bounce just as hard i say we get him:D
67 geordie nick // May 19, 2008 at 14:35
dont u think keegan and co r just sayin they hav no interest in turan so tht other clubs think
tht and therefore they wont rush into a bid for him, hence paving the way for him to sign for us without any ‘modric’ type saga

dont worry mate, it was on wikipedia but its been changed again now, just someone tampering and trying to take the pee
73 Ian // May 19, 2008 at 20:51
I have a feeling they know exactly who they want and are negotiating now, it may be Cisse or someone with similar standing, the players they are looking at overseas who are playing is probably just because they have the opportunity to, why not? Go over on company expenses look at everyone playing and you may never know one may come up for sale or they may earmark one for the future, they wouldnt dare risk looking at their top target otherwise the other clubs would be alerted to their interest, so if anything it will be a red herring.
74 Toon Down Under // May 20, 2008 at 4:50
I know all about Mario!
He is like Christain Vieri in the way he is built, plays & moves. He would be a great signing, but Stuggart are asking 20 milion plus. He won’t be coming to the Toon!
