Joey Barton has admitted the charges of assault and affray, following his arrest in Liverpool just after Christmas.
Joey Barton – admits charges from December 27th last year
Barton, who is still only 25, became involved in a confrontation outside a McDonald’s restaurant on December 27 2007 around 5:00 am in the morning, after a night of drinking with his brother and a woman.
He apparently admitted the charges last month, but reporting restrictions were only lifted today at Liverpool crown court, where Barton is due to be sentenced.
Ousmane Dabo after his bust up with Joey last May
Barton will also face assault charges in his trial due at the end of June, for his assault on his Manchester City team mate Ousmane Dabo, in a training ground bust up on May 1st last year.
Those specific charges are strenuously denied by Joey.
Newcastle target Mikail Sylvestre of Manchester United, a friend of Ousmane Dabo, refused to consider Newcastle last year, because Barton was at the club.
We don’t know where all of this will lead to, and have no idea what impact the outcome of these trials will have on Joey Barton’s career at Newcastle United. But like we’ve always told the kids, actions have consequences and bad actions have bad consequences.
If found guilty of either charge, Barton will need to serve his punishment, but whether he will then be able to continue his career at the club would be questionable.
Obviously whether he is found guilty on either charges will have a big effect.
Comments welcome.

Comment #42Tanks for all your help this season Uncle Jailbird Joey. I recommend you get a Brut soap on a rope, as probably used by Keggy in the seventies.

Comment #43frankieboy- you exactly right, even if he does serve a sentence he wont be there long as there isnt enough room in prisons. he will end up with suspended sentance, community service, and a huge huge fine

well this is great innit , may aswell flog him as he’s gonna be out for a while . still hasnt been in court for the dabo thing yet , doesnt look promising for him .
i was all for giving him a chance, but not at the expense of the squad , we will defo need a couple of new midfielders now .

It is more complicated as latest incident was straightforward as caught on CCTV. The Dabo incident will take longer to collate all evidence until CPS is confident to proceed with guaranteed prosecution.
These things have no time limit and without any evidence the charges would of already been dropped by now.
Also this latest incident aggravates further the Dabo assault.

Comment #46Barton could beat up Martins to a pulp in a training ground fight, and people on here would still defend him.
HE WILL NEVER CHANGE, AND NEVER HAS!

Comment #51Without time off for good behaviour he’s gone till Xmas. He will appeal no doubt. He still has the Dabo trial to come in June. We will have to wait and see. Put him in Wormwood Scrubs so he can look over the wall and see Ramage play for QPR. Pity really – I too thought he was improving.

Comment #53Frankieboy i know that, but the incident was…when, more then a year ago. this isn’t finding Bin Laden, one would would imagine they could gather what evidence there is in 12 freakin’ months in a simple brawl incident.
they have nothing.

He will be getting paid a fortune for being in there and me & you are also paying for his board and lodgings.
How many people think this is right and proper.AND when he gets released he will probably be entitled to a Dischsrge Grant to get him home.

Wait and see, time will tell.Could be this time next year before trial, unless Dabo decides to drop charges which is unlikely.

People have been sent down for much longer than 6 months for fighting on a friday night and those are your average working men(and women)
SSN just reported NUFC have noted todays sentence but will not comment further at this time.

Comment #66He’s done well for us these past 2 months, really. He was provoked so he kicked in some little Scouse puff, I’d have done the same. Also Dabo is a total queer, how many fights go unreported at football training grounds ffs.

Comment #67frankieboy- yes i would be if my little twat of a son had spat in bartons cousins hair. if there is the biggest offence of all that makes me angry apart from peados and rapists and other really bad stuff, its spiting spitting.

Agree with you on that one. I would rather be punched in the mouth than be spat on.
Was it proven that he was provoked by spitting, cos if so that is also assault and the other party would of been charged(may of been so and dealt with by way of something stupid like a caution, which again is wrong)

its been known for ages about the spitting as there was witnesses, but i dont think it would be right for the jury to mention that, else that person who did it could become pulic enemy number one for all the barton fans.
its a shame though as wich should be a day dominated by the news of tommy burn’s funeral, more news is on barton going to jail

Comment #77It’s a shame that since Xmas he’s knuckled down and got on with a job for Newcastle.
I believe 6 months is severe but I do not know the extent of the assault and believed the assault was worse on his then Man C team mate.
He was wrong in being out at 5 a.m. at Liverpool and putting himself in the situation, suppose he’s so underpaid he cannot afford minders/drivers!!!!!
6 months ago I would have said good riddance, now I’m not so sure. The club i believe will be 100% behind him.

Comment #79Those who think Newcastle will appeal are way off the mark – the video evidence is too damming. There’s nothing they could do if they wanted to —and Mort doesn’t. He never wanted him in the first place (Sam said it took a month to convince them that Barton was over his past fights to sign him)
He will be in prison for the entire 6 months. According to law, Newcastle are fully entitled to cancel his contract. If they don’t they will pay him £60k per week to be in prison. For 6 months in prison that is £1.4 million
People who continue to defend him, are entitled to their opinion, but the time has come to rid ourselves of Barton for good…
