Newcastle’s Reported Interest in Swiss Striker

There are reports today that Newcastle are interested in FC Basel’s Eren Derdiyok.

Eren Derdiyok – could be smart buy for Newcastle

The 19-year-old Swiss striker scored against England at Wembley in February and seems to have no trouble at all scoring goals..

From what we can tell from his record, he would look a good buy and there’s one big advantage that Newcastle have over any other club interested in the youngster.

Eren is quoted in the Mirror as saying at the end of April:

“My dream is to play with Owen at Newcastle.”

He has played for Basel 26 times this season and scored 9 goals and has represented the full Switzerland side twice and scored one goal. He previously played for the Swiss Under-19 (7 goals in 7 games) and Under-21 (7 goals in 5 games) sides.

He seems to have little trouble scoring goals, that’s for sure.

At 6ft 3in Derdiyok is a powerful striker, who can also play at center-back if needed. He is of Turkish descent and started his career with the Swiss club BSC Old Boys, at the beginning of the 2005/06 season.

He scored 10 goals in just 18 appearances for BSC Old Boys, and FC Basel snapped him up in 2006 at the young age of 18.

The 2007/2008 season has turned out to be even more productive, and he has been a regular in the Basle side.

Derdiyok scored his first hat trick playing away against FC Thun on 2nd March this year, and in early April, Basle won the Swisscom Cup.

The youngster could be a smart buy for the club, depending how much Basel would want for the youngster.

He would obviously go straight into the first team squad even though he’s just 19 years old, and Newcastle’s hope would be he still has plenty of development left in him for the future.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

sounds decent, these are the types of players we need to get on the go. young, obviously got an eye for goal and no one knows too much about him. if ashley is looking at nufc as more of a business these are the types of players we can sell on after a couple of seasons in the prem

Never heard that he can play CB?? And he never did it here in the swiss league…I think his goal scoring record is already better than SMITH’s? 😉

This is the option we should follow. He is young, he is enthusiastic, and he will develop I am sure. He WANTS to play for us with Owen. OK sort out Owen’s contract and offer this bloke one too. Sign him quick and tell Smith where Central Station is.

It’s his dream to play with Owen at Newcastle, Owen hasn’t even signed a new contract yet.
For all we know he might still leave…..

For me, I’d rather sign him up than either Gomez or Gomis. Martins and Owen deserve to be 1st choice players, with Viduka in contention if and when fit with this boy and Carroll fighting for the remaining place. Viduka has one more season left, at best, so these boys would definitely get a chance to shine!

Wasn’t Diane alleged to have similar things according to similar rags. I’ll take it with a pinch of salt until I see him in black and white.

We keep looking at strikers, but I really don’t want the apple cart upset with Martins and Owen still not signed to extended deals. Martins still has a buy out clause. Strikers need to be looked at as a replacement for Viduka and cover for the others.

I still say Zigic would be good, but if we can get this guy I won’t complain.

Has anybody heard any more about Arda Turan?

Az – well you’re a happy little soul aren’t you!

Even if Owen goes – it’s hardly the end of the world.

Owen, Martins, N’Zogbia – 2 out of 3 next year with Viduka in the middle we’ll get results.

It would also be nice to have midfielders who can actually pass to our own players, and tackle without drawing blood, but that’s being a bit hopeful, I know.

The team should never be about one person

I applaud the new policy of Wise and Jimenez to bring in fresh new talent. Not sure about this lad but at a good price why not take a chance. If we can take a chance on expensive flops like Boumsong, Marcelino etc etc etc! Then why not on young up and coming players who would cost a fraction of the afore mentioned write offs.

so, who do we need then?

I think everyone knows that we need one powerfull striker because Vid is injured and not a first choice FC anymore.

His record would suggest that he is a going to be better than Carroll.

He looks like a good prospect. Certainly cheaper than the previous two.

I still dont see any striker better than Djibril Cisse for the money, if we are going to buy a youngster with potential to drop straight in to the first why are we keeping Carroll??
Our current strikers are excellent, a person who brings something better or different is required, Cisse brings guaranteed goals, aggression, determination, speed and height, he would give us another set of options, what would this person bring except youth??
We can climb the table with one additional good striker, it is elsewhere we need to be taking chances to improve midfield and defense, once we are higher up the table buy the best strikers available, ie Torres quality, why bring in players who may not give us the quality we have already at the front, I dont see the point.

    Kash !!!
be quiet for gods sake , your on about buying an unproven youngster over europes greatest prospects .
there is no chance in hell you would have watched gomez play , or you wouldnt spout such shiite as signing this swiss guy up who’s fishing for a move to us , over the likes of gomis and gomez .
we heard you the first time you said it , and laughed then , nothings changed !! 🙂

gomez all the way , dont care if we have to break the bank for him or flog owen .

We need powerful striker, but I doubt we need someone only at the age of 19.

We need consistency up front and young players usually lack of it. Experience also count when it comes to play in high level league.

When I first read this I wasn’t too impressed but then again his age, goal tally and ambition are worth a gamble on ( for the right price ). Carroll should be the next contender for Vid’s shirt however this guy would be another one pushing ….

I would love to see at least two people fighting for any one position within the team. Healthy competition can only be aq good thing.

What is his value ? anyone know….

outbid everton for Jo…buy this guy…that gives us 3 top quality up fronts…with martins and Jo still quite young…and a very promising youngster to warm the bench (this guy), someone to fill in the bench spot when this guy plays (carroll) and then viduka to keep the medical staff busy…and smith to leave…good plan 😀 but before we think about any of this can we jsut be unrealistic and make a bid for adriano and use huge wages and keegans persuasive techniques to get him here…then we would be ont he way up the table
