Owen Looks Forward To England Records

May 21st, 2008 · 22 Comments

Newcastle United captain Michael Owen is keen to reach 100 caps for his country – and he’s just 11 appearances short of that significant milestone.

Michael Owen - 40 goals and 89 caps for England - not bad

The 28 year-old has been included in Fabio Capello’s England squad for the summer friendlies with the USA and Trinidad & Tobago.

Michael talked to Sky Sports today:

“Well obviously it would be a very proud moment if I was ever lucky enough to get 100 caps,”

“The two elements are staying fit and being in good form and if you do them two, then I would be hopeful one day I can get it.”

“It sounds nothing - 11 caps to go - but at international level that is either a year-and-a-half or two years so it isn’t easy and that puts David’s 100 caps and achievement into perspective.”

“He has been fantastic.”

Michael Owen famously burst on the England scene in his first season for Liverpool and was included in the England squad at the tender age of 18, in the summer world cup of 1998.

Then he scored that great individual goal that made headlines during the 1998 World Cup following his wonder strike against Argentina in St. Etienne. That was the game of course in which David Beckham was sent off and England lost on penalties in the quarter finals.

Michael has 40 goals for England, which is just 9 goals short of the record held by Ashington-born Bobby Charlton, one of the greatest players ever to grace a football pitch.

Owen talked of that record:

“Again it is something that is a long way off, but being on 40, although I wouldn’t say it is an easy target, realistically there is a chance if I play regularly over the next two or three years.”

“There is half a chance that I could get close to it.”

“It’s quite a tough one but maybe achievable.”

“They almost interlink [caps and goals] if I can stay fit and stay in the team and play well I might have a chance.”

On a more down to earth level for Newcastle’s great fans, we are hoping it will not be too long before Michael signs an extended contract at Newcastle.

There’s not doubt Michael has proved since Kevin arrived at the club, that he’s an important part of the club’s hopefully successful future.

Comments welcome.

Would like to see some signings soone! Not just the speculations that surounds us every day.

  • 6 James // May 21, 2008 at 15:32

Anyone reckon Mikel Forrsell is worth a punt as a fourth choice striker? He’s leaving Birmingham looking for Premiership clubs to take him on. He’d only cost a few million and he’s proven in the league.

  • 7 Az // May 21, 2008 at 15:35

Maybe at sunderland or boro, not for us man

  • 8 tdt // May 21, 2008 at 15:36

Michael Owen - awesome player who has silenced all his critics. Hope he continues to play well for the toon and England.

He’s coped with all the criticisms and doubters and (not for the first time in his career) has shown just what a complete professional he is.

I’d like to see him at St James Park for many years to come.

  • 10 Leo // May 21, 2008 at 15:42

this article is about owen not about who we are going to sign etc….

good luck to owen getting there, hopefully it will be at newcastle and him scoring goals but lets also hope he doesnt beat wor local lads england record

  • 11 James // May 21, 2008 at 15:45

He will break England’s all time scoring record playing for the Toon….

  • 12 Petworth Mag // May 21, 2008 at 15:48

Doesn’t Gary Linekar have a share of the record?

  • 13 James // May 21, 2008 at 15:51

No Lineker got 49 goals, Charlton got 50 (playing a lot less games than we play today)

    Owen will break the record

  • 14 Martins // May 21, 2008 at 15:54

Shorey is put up for sale. Bring him in!

  • 15 Obafan // May 21, 2008 at 15:55

I would rather hear him talk how excited he is to play a few more seasons for Newcastle, cause he just signed a new contract. Once again TOP PRIORITY ATM give new deals (without buy-out clauses) to Owen and Oba!!!!!!

  • 16 James // May 21, 2008 at 16:00

Obafan - once again all taken out of context - his interview was at an England event a few days ago where the focus is all England, he’s not supposed to talk about his club at england events.

You can tell from the way he plays and celebrates that he loves playing for KK’s Newcastle, he doesn’t need to do an interview with Sky Sports for that — it’s plain to see for any fan.

When asked by BBC Sport after the Spurs game if he thought his recent performances had repayed the fans faith in him, he said no, only by helping us win a trophy can he do that, and that he is desperate to win a trophy for the fans
    Owen is now a Geordie

  • 17 Graham // May 21, 2008 at 16:06

Well said James. If Owen is happy and fit then he scores goals no matter whether it is for England or Newcastle. He’ll sign a new deal be our top scorer next season with 20 odd goals and will break the 100 caps and goals record for England in time for the World Cup in a couple of years time (where we’ll fail miserably in a quarter final penalty shootout against the bloody Germans!)

  • 18 Obafan // May 21, 2008 at 16:58

James - I did not mean that he is not supposed to say that he would love the record of England international. It is normal that he wants that, who wouldn’t?

I just want to state that it takes ages to solve the problems of his new contract. The same with Oba, he still has his buy-out clause in it.
I did not want to offense Owen at all. I hope he succeed in his record and that he will do it when in duty of black n white ;-) .

  • 19 Egar // May 21, 2008 at 17:16

Good luck, Michael. Hope you’ll break that record one day.

  • 20 Shaz // May 21, 2008 at 17:21

he was playing for his country long before he started playing for your rubbish club.why should he feel bad about representing them.by the way the fa paid a chunk of his wages too.

  • 21 Egar // May 21, 2008 at 17:31

And long may he continue playing for our club.

  • 22 Shaz // May 23, 2008 at 11:06

he is out of england games with a virus.

Dr. Ed Harrison is a retired IBM Consulting Group Executive who now has time, and lots of it, after 34 years at the American computer company, to write about his lifelong passion - Newcastle United Football Club.

Ed was born and bred in Newcastle Upon Tyne, and watched his first game at St. James’ Park in 1949 as a 4 year-old with his Mother and Father. He was told to look out for number 9 - Jackie Milburn – the great Wor Jackie - and was he fast!

In football terms Ed was a goalkeeper and played for Wharrier Street Primary School and Newcastle Minors (Newcastle Schoolboys Under-11), in 1956 and went on to play for Newcastle Schoolboys and Northumberland Schoolboys (Under-15) in 1959 and an England Schoolboys trial.

He was at Newcastle United for a couple of years from 1960 as an amateur, while still at school, and played with Bobby Moncur and David Craig, amongst others, for the Newcastle United Under-18 side (Newcastle N’s in those days), during the relegation season of 1960-1961.

Ed attended Heaton Technical and Manor Park schools, and then went on to study at both King’s College, London (BSc Electrical Engineering) and Newcastle University (PhD Computer Science). He played for Newcastle Universities and England Universities from 1967 until 1970.

But a short couple of years after Ed joined IBM in 1970, he was shipped over to the USA, with his new wife Madeline, a beautiful local Newcastle lassie.

At IBM Ed was in computer systems and network design for 34 years, and in his last 10 years at the company was persuaded to enter executive management. where he ended up running IBM's Americas' Network Consulting Group for 5 years from the late 1990s, and was instrumental in forming the IBM alliance with Cisco Systems in 1999.

Ed and Madeline live just outside Raleigh in North Carolina. Their twin sons Paul and Neil, and daughter Elaine, are now in their early 30s, live close by, and Neil has carried on the family tradition by becoming an avid Newcastle United supporter.

And one final thing that is so true - you can take the boy out of Newcastle but you can't take Newcastle out of the boy!

    Howay The Lads!!
