Newcastle United captain Michael Owen is keen to reach 100 caps for his country – and he’s just 11 appearances short of that significant milestone.

The 28 year-old has been included in Fabio Capello’s England squad for the summer friendlies with the USA and Trinidad & Tobago.
Michael talked to Sky Sports today:
“Well obviously it would be a very proud moment if I was ever lucky enough to get 100 caps,”
“The two elements are staying fit and being in good form and if you do them two, then I would be hopeful one day I can get it.â€
“It sounds nothing - 11 caps to go - but at international level that is either a year-and-a-half or two years so it isn’t easy and that puts David’s 100 caps and achievement into perspective.”
“He has been fantastic.”
Michael Owen famously burst on the England scene in his first season for Liverpool and was included in the England squad at the tender age of 18, in the summer world cup of 1998.
Then he scored that great individual goal that made headlines during the 1998 World Cup following his wonder strike against Argentina in St. Etienne. That was the game of course in which David Beckham was sent off and England lost on penalties in the quarter finals.
Michael has 40 goals for England, which is just 9 goals short of the record held by Ashington-born Bobby Charlton, one of the greatest players ever to grace a football pitch.
Owen talked of that record:
“Again it is something that is a long way off, but being on 40, although I wouldn’t say it is an easy target, realistically there is a chance if I play regularly over the next two or three years.â€
“There is half a chance that I could get close to it.â€
“It’s quite a tough one but maybe achievable.â€
“They almost interlink [caps and goals] if I can stay fit and stay in the team and play well I might have a chance.â€
On a more down to earth level for Newcastle’s great fans, we are hoping it will not be too long before Michael signs an extended contract at Newcastle.
There’s not doubt Michael has proved since Kevin arrived at the club, that he’s an important part of the club’s hopefully successful future.

Anyone reckon Mikel Forrsell is worth a punt as a fourth choice striker? He’s leaving Birmingham looking for Premiership clubs to take him on. He’d only cost a few million and he’s proven in the league.

Michael Owen - awesome player who has silenced all his critics. Hope he continues to play well for the toon and England.
He’s coped with all the criticisms and doubters and (not for the first time in his career) has shown just what a complete professional he is.
I’d like to see him at St James Park for many years to come.

I would rather hear him talk how excited he is to play a few more seasons for Newcastle, cause he just signed a new contract. Once again TOP PRIORITY ATM give new deals (without buy-out clauses) to Owen and Oba!!!!!!

Obafan - once again all taken out of context - his interview was at an England event a few days ago where the focus is all England, he’s not supposed to talk about his club at england events.
You can tell from the way he plays and celebrates that he loves playing for KK’s Newcastle, he doesn’t need to do an interview with Sky Sports for that — it’s plain to see for any fan.
When asked by BBC Sport after the Spurs game if he thought his recent performances had repayed the fans faith in him, he said no, only by helping us win a trophy can he do that, and that he is desperate to win a trophy for the fans

Well said James. If Owen is happy and fit then he scores goals no matter whether it is for England or Newcastle. He’ll sign a new deal be our top scorer next season with 20 odd goals and will break the 100 caps and goals record for England in time for the World Cup in a couple of years time (where we’ll fail miserably in a quarter final penalty shootout against the bloody Germans!)

James - I did not mean that he is not supposed to say that he would love the record of England international. It is normal that he wants that, who wouldn’t?
I just want to state that it takes ages to solve the problems of his new contract. The same with Oba, he still has his buy-out clause in it.
