Newcastle United seem ready to test Glasgow Rangers’ determination to hang on to their star center-back Carlos Cuellar, by making a £7M bid for the defender.

Carlos Cuellar - been in great form for Glasgow Rangers this season
Cuellar, 26, has been in great form for the Glasgow side this season, after joining them only last summer for £2.3M from Osasuna in Spain.
Cuellar has recently been voted the SPL Footballer of the Year for last season.
The £7M reported bid from Newcastle would give Rangers a profit of £4.7M on Cuellar in just 12 months, not a bad deal at all. But we think the actual first bid may be a little lower than the £7M that has been reported.
The Spaniard signed a four-year contract only last summer, and his impressive performances have alerted many clubs south of the border.
Dennis Wise, Newcastle’s Executive Director of Football, was said to be at the City of Manchester Stadium for last week’s UEFA Cup final against Zenit St Petersburg to watch the player.
Cuellar has also attracted the attentions of guess who?
Yes, Tottenham Hotspur are also interested, as manager Juande Ramos looks to get a partner for Jonathan Woodgate in the center of his defense.
That doesn’t sound good news for Spurs captain Ledley King, who has suffered multiple injuries these last couple of seasons.
We think Carlos would be a very good buy for the Magpies, now that it seems we have lessened our interest in Man City’s Richard Dunne, presumably because of his age. However, that still seems a little strange to us.
It would also be nice to beat Tottenham to a player, at least once during the summer.
What do you think? Please let us know.
Comments welcome.

Rangers said they wouldn’t even consider bids less than £10 million.
He would be good for Enrique, but £10 million for Cuellar would be crazy.
His reputation has improved since Spain because he had handled the strike force of St Mirran and Gretna, does this mean he can handle the PL strikers?

I too will believe too when I see it. I am getting so cynical about media speculation now that I am ready to say buy him so Spurs can’t have him!

Imagine having as many money as Roman, then you could buy both spurs and us, remove all our deadwood like Smith and Ameobi to Spurs and then move their assests like Berba and Bale to us lol

I remember a certain CB from Rangers who was outstanding in the SPL. Then he came to NUFC for £8m. The rest was history.
The name Boumsong ring a bell?

Does anyone know if we will still be paying bartons wages while is he is in jail? (still can’t believe that one of our players is in jail thanks Fat Sam)

I’ll celebrate when he’s in a black and white shirt (not the kind Barton’s likely to be wearing!!!) and not before!

10 million is too much for this guy..even 5 mil.btoo..better we get campell for free..or some players from Bundesliga or FRench league..their defenders are better and cheaper..arse get Degen from Dortmund free..
we want to give 7 or 10 million for a defender from Rangers!!..funny..
Its better to spend this money that we still have for Turan or Mario Gomez..

latest news hot off the Bollox Press…Spurs spy has been following D Wise around Europe collecting valuable information on players for the wannabe London Giants! it appears that this is their ‘recruitment strategy’ and have been linked with nearly every player that Newcastle have approached! Spurs also signed Newcastle bound Moderic days before he was to sign at the Toon!
Tune in next week to see the actions of the Spuds in their hopeless quest to becoming a London Giant!!!

Shit day today and more shit to hear about news related to Newcastle United. I am soooooo fu££ing fed up of Spurs!!! Does Juande Ramos have any clue about what he is doing?? He seems to be copying every move Keegan makes!! I am tired of us being linked to hundreds of players only for Spurs to be in for them as well. Then at the end of the day nothing happens or they end up in Tottenham!! I AM SICK OF THE SPECULATION!!!!

I don’t know why people are getting so pissy at Spurs. It happens every summer. Spurs are linked with everyone in the world. Seriously, if Spurs signed as many people as they are linked with, they’d have the biggest squad in the whole of the footballing world.
Remember most of the so called journo’s in the south are Chelsea or Spurs fans.
23 Obafan // May 21, 2008 at 17:04
First I have to see it, because I will not believe a thing which is not confirmed.
BTW: Is he not too old to go for, he is already 26, just 2 years younger than that old Dunne; lol
?
24 Graham // May 21, 2008 at 17:07
We dont have a hope in hell in signing this guy. He actually asked specifically to go to Rangers last year.
I work in Glasgow a lot and most of their fans reckon he loves the place and has no intentions of moving on. And I dont think that Rangers are in real need of the extra cash

Where’s the source for this story? Sure, we have been linked with him a fair bit, but you have no source directly listed for this particular round of Cuellar gossip. Or are you now doing as the rags do and picking player names and teams out of two hats and making up a story to fit?

“I remember a certain CB from Rangers who was outstanding in the SPL. Then he came to NUFC for £8m. The rest was history.”
true but boum was gash in europe (i think after one game against a crap side he made a rick and was getting grief from rangers fans) and ultimatly in his last few games terrible in the spl as well. only managed half a season b4 they wanted him out.
whereas cuellar has been imense for a full season in teh spl and against some very good sides in the uefa cup, he was also very good in la liga so imo he has a lot more going for him.
30 Callum // May 21, 2008 at 17:22
Guys - Remember how our last defender we signed from Rangers who performed well in the Scottish league turned out? Him and Bramble at the back gave the opposition fans a right laugh
I dont think we should pay 7mil for this guy, get dunne for less and he has PL experience
31 Ashton // May 21, 2008 at 17:23
i saw him against Zenit and he sucked !
he is not better than Faye Taylor Rozehnal imo
32 ronaldeano // May 21, 2008 at 17:44
Cuellar is by far the best player in the SPL. He is NO Boumsong. He has never put a foot wrong, unlike Boumsong!
33 Graham // May 21, 2008 at 17:45

Yes by the way…
34 Hadji // May 21, 2008 at 18:19
With 7 mill we only gonna take the piss of the Rangers and at the end of the day he’ll end up in some club for 9 mill. But you never know ,this offer might work just fine for us as long as the Sper.s dont get involved in this deal.
35 Punk Skunk // May 21, 2008 at 18:32

Is anyone else filled with dread at the thought of buying a centre back from Rangers?
And to give them a £4.7m profit on a player they bought a year ago - what the hell are we? The personal bank account of Rangers? I wouldnt touch this guy with a barge pole - form in the scottish league doesnt count for anything - second rate league for second rate players. Maybe a different story if he was young but at 26 if he was that good he woudlnt be playin for Rangers.
37 Lawman // May 21, 2008 at 19:06
Spurs and Ramos really p*** me off now!!! Ramos just has no talent and feeds off our guys. We should put word out that we’ll spend up to £15m EACH on bringing Luque and Boumsong back to NUFC. Hopefully Ramos will think, hmmm ….. NUFC are going for them, they must be good, lets bid £20m each.
38 Leo Smith // May 21, 2008 at 19:06
Look, stop this “Remember another centre back who played for Rangers? I rest my case” rubbish. It has no basis as an argument.
By the same token I could say “Hmm, that Babayaro was a bit of a rubbish left back - best not buy Ashley Cole then!” or “Parker went downhill after a season, so there’s no point in buying Essien - he’ll do the same!” Some people…
Also, stop the pessimism “Nothing will happen! The board are rubbish!” Right. So you’d rather have FFS back then? We bid £20m for Modric, we seem to have high bids in for other players and we’re interested in high quality. Mario Gomez would be an amazing signing, and we actually know he was watched, for example. GG7 says we’ve lodged a bid for Veloso. This set up will deliver - did we ever sign anyone this early before? Can’t remember us signing anyone before July for quite a few years! Also, I don’t buy all this “Board won’t allow KK to do [insert b****cks here]” The papers say we’re after eg Dunne, then when we don’t sign him, it’s the board not letting KK have control. So, therefore, the boards at Spurs, West Ham & Sunderland must be doing the same then…? Gimme a break.
On Cuellar - yes please. Impressed me in the games I watched, esp. Uefa final. He’s better than what we already have and that’s a step forwards. At the very least he’s a good solid squad player; same applies to Shorey. We have a small squad and it needs strengthening. When we’re in Europe we can think about higher quality - they’re both as good as anyone outside the top 4 (give or take) so they’d help us, at least for the time being. COME ON THE TOON!
39 NUFCFAN // May 21, 2008 at 19:21
Let spurs have him, he has confidence playing against championship strikers. Bramble would be a superstar there. No thanks, can do better.
Would love spurs getting him, watching players like oba, Torres, Rooney, tevez, ronaldo, Santa Cruz, yakubu, walcot, adebeyor, defoe, tear him apart. I can’t think of one striker to challenge him in Scotland.
in the uefa cup, he didn’t play against premier league quality.
And should he have done better to stop the goal in the final?
40 Bill F // May 21, 2008 at 19:36
Perhaps the wise sages of the R-squad have decided not to persue Dunne for some other reason than age. Ahhaa the penny has dropped.

guys why the hell should we give a f***k about money, that is mike ashleys job we have seen it before when we were intereted in Belleti and ended up getting Cacapa we need to do the transfer buying in the defence properly dont make do with dunne or campbell pay the 10 million for cuellar and the years of shite defending will stop. it is as simple as that you cant argue so f***k if we have spent 3 million over what we should have he is our man and we should go all out to get him.
44 robertsa // May 21, 2008 at 20:09
why should we care about the money? that is mike ashley’s job. we have seen it before when we were interested in belleti and ended up getting cacapa. who cares if we spend 3 million more than we should? he is our man and we should go all out for him then the years of crap defending will stop however they wont if we make do with people like dunne and campbell.

Leo surely you can appreciate the difference between signing someone with proven premier league and international pedigree, eg. Cole and Essien, and signing someone who has only impressed in the SPL and is already 26 and unlikely to improve (especially if he comes to NUFC given our record of destroying previously highly rated centre backs).
49 Leo Smith // May 21, 2008 at 22:00
Hehe, oh yes of course, but I was just trying to illustrate the point that because a centre back has played for Rangers it doesn’t mean they’re rubbish, as some on here seem to think.
If someone isn’t good enough then that’s a reason not to buy them; not because of the club they play for.
I’d like to think we’re finished destroying centre backs, cos we’re not really creating any (yet to be convinced by Taylor/Edgar, but they certainly have potential)! I stand by my opinion that Cuellar looks good and would improve us, especially if (as I suspect) there’s whatever money KK wants to spend
50 Kayazirie // May 21, 2008 at 23:01

on a completely different topic, sir bobby’s cancer fund has raised half a mill, £500k in 7 weeks and i think newcastle v ipswich idea being mooted would nbe great, worthy cause.
also, owen, great player that he is, gets 110k a week. wouldn’t it be great if he and his colleagues donated half a weeks wages, nothing to them, to the fund? oh no, no new car this week then, and the shopping bill would make life such a tight squeeze eh…..
in these global times of discomfort and unrest, whilst we struggle to make ends meet and whilst we complain about ashley not making a statement with his cash, wouldnt it be great to see some greater generosity from these people?

I’ve watched Rangers a lot recently on TV, and Cueller as been outstanding. Those of you who said he only plays against the liked of Gretna seem to forget Rangers reached the UEFA cup beating a few decent teams on the way there. It’s easy to pick and choose the games to belittle someone it’s like saying Newcastle only played the likes of Wigan and Derby in the Premiership, but best not to go there eh.Cueller is the closest thing I’ve seen to Woodgate, without the injuries or court cases.Nufc should pull out all the stops to get him even at £10m.Those of you who suggest that every player in Scotland isn’t worth the risk because Boomsong was shit ,should not be allowed on any blog because it’s obvious their opinion is a joke and without foundation.
54 ToonRich // May 22, 2008 at 9:32
Cuellar is ok, but not worldclass…and will people STOP saying get Campbell on a free, he’s already stated he wants to lead Pompey out on the euro stage, so why would he join us? If he does move he’ll go to spain imo.
