21 year-old Olympique Lyon forward Loic Remy is attracting Premiership interest, and Newcastle United have been linked with the player for at least nine months.

Loic Remy - class player would be great young signing on Tyneside
Lyon is Remy’s home town club and they are now reported to being open to selling the youngster this summer, and have already been contacted by Newcastle United, Portsmouth and Tottenham about the player.
We have Lyon’s former captain for the last 5 years – Claudio Cacapa - at the club and he can let Kevin know exactly what Remy is like.
We also have N’Zogbia playing in the French Under-21 squad – and young Charles will have trained with Remy during the French Under-21 training sessions.
We also have a lot of French speaking players at the club right now in Geremi, N’Zogbia, Beye, Faye and N’Zogbia to name but a few, so if Newcastle do sign the youngster, he could acclimatize well and get plenty of support both on and off the field at the club.
Who is Loïc Rémy?
He is a promising young right-footed French striker, born on January 2, 1987 in Lyon, Rhône-Alpes, France and can play as a striker or on the right wing.
He plays for his hometown club Olympique Lyonnais, for whom he has appeared 12 times.
He has been on loan to Lens this year and appeared 6 times for them and scored 3 goals.
Loic stands just over 6′ tall and has played once for the France Under-21 team and has also represented France at Under-18 and Under-19 levels.
Sounds to us like he’s the type of player we are looking for. Tottenham are also said to be interested - unfortunately.
Comments very welcome.

Well if Spurs are interested, we may as well give up now…
Seriously though, it depends on how much he’d cost. If we could get him for around 5 mil or (hopefully) less, then I’d say give him a shot.

as ive said when we talk about players newcastle may be interested in we dont need to mention spurs interest. its so obvious to be the case as with the other players we look at
4 Bill F // May 21, 2008 at 13:36
I would take 5 or 6 of the current Lyon team given the chance although I have to admit Remy did not figure among them. Benzema, Kahlstrom, Fred, Cris, Keita, Junhino, Toulalon. And I am sure I have missed at least one.

Have we 2 N’Zogbias’ Ed? left AND right wingers?
Cool.

might as well give spurs the whole list of players available and say who do you want as we will be feeding on the scraps…
yes its paper talk and this is the worst time for players being linked the window isnt even open yet..
13 Ian // May 21, 2008 at 13:56
Could be good for the wing, I would be surprised if he would replace one of our current strikers, if we are after him as a future striker then my old question remains, why are we keeping Carroll??
One potential good striker required-I thought that was Carroll’s job, and please one proven goalscoring striker to rotate and cover for injuries, ie Cisse, Johnson or Kitson, our current striker line up is good, we need additional cover not a youngster, picture it, Owen gets injured and has been scoring all season, no pressure for a debut then!!!
Otherwise sell Carroll bring in a youngster and an established proven goalscorer. Young strikers rarely work straight out of the box.

One to consider. Spurs and Pompey again. What is it with those two? Seems they cannot do anything without seeing where NUFC looks first.
Can’t we wind both of them up and get KK, Mort, and Terry Mac to watch a game at some
Paris or Amsterdam playground? Then see what that sparks off in the Daily Mail, Sun, and NOTW.
18 ToonKing // May 21, 2008 at 14:01
window opens on 1st of July.
19 t-g-w // May 21, 2008 at 14:07
We may have been linked with so many players because no one knows who we’re going to buy, or it may be that for the first time that I can remember as an NUFC fan that we have a half-decent scouting network that is looking at many different options for the same position.
That’s a good thing to me.
We’ve probably been linked with 40 players cos we’ve scouted 40 players.
And I don’t think this time of year is boring, I love all the speculaiton - it’s our only time to dream of players like Veloso, Turan and Gomez who we will probably never get. No harm in dreaming though. Gomez especially looks awsome. Well worth a £25 million bid I would say.

There are going to be many more players linked to Newcastle this is just the start, the papers are getting bored and Newcastle are keeping their cards hidden from the back stabbing press.
I’m excited but it’s a good thing that NUFC are being so secretive
23 Piers // May 21, 2008 at 14:25

i dont think we will buy anyone ever again. i think our board is full of shit and i am gettign fed up of the wankers to be honest. gala president has came out and said if we pay 13 million we can have turan tmrw, today i see that turan himself says he wants to c ome but that as of now, we have made no offer but only an enquiry. May i ask what the hell was the point in making an enquiry and then not bothering once you know you can get the player?? just watch this space, frigging turan will win man of the tournemant at the euros and be worth 40 million over night. he fits the ’so called’ criteria of what cock end mort wants, young and a massive prospect. what is it with our board. they wont buy dunne cos he is too old at 29 and they wont buy turan at 21…. begs the question what the fcuk do they really want? they aint gonna get any budding stars for peanuts! anyway, i see they are saying the mortisha himself is wrapping his hand in…. good job too i say…. i think that ashley once wanted david dein, now thats better!! as for this player in this blog… i forgot his name already, doesnt matter though cos as long as he costs more than 40 quid and is 29 or over or as young as 21, is black or even white then we are out of the running. mort and wise, you are a pair a bull shitters.
26 NUFCFAN // May 21, 2008 at 14:31
buy the under 21 french team! Remy is a handy player.
RE: Ian, I am all for buying as many promising players as possible. Worrying about Carrol isnt an issue. He will go back out on Loan - he needs to step up, either when he goes away on loan or when he plays for the firsts.
And when you compare him at his age to these wonderkids of Gomez ,Gomis, Rooney when he came onto the scene, even Shearer when he did. He has a long way to go.
The whole point is to buy these players for a sell on. Carroll could end up being one of these. I would rather have a great players in the team than putting Carroll in for the sake of having a geordie in.
However dont get me wrong i would love to have as many in as possible but they have to be good enough, which i think lua lua will be - was actually disapointed he didnt play as much as he should of last year. Like the fact he attacks players and beats them unlike milner

Perhaps if people stopped broadcasting who Newcastle were interested in signing, Newcastle might find it easier to sign people. (Why didn’t NUFC insist on the Modric deal being kept quiet instead of allowing it to be plastered all over the press, I do not know!)
99.9% of it is paper talk anyway.
31 Ben_BKK // May 21, 2008 at 14:44
The whole thing about the transfer window: You can acquire a player’s signature once the season has ended (might actually be at any time, not too sure) but they don’t join you until July 1st, which us when the transfer window officially opens, and players can move to their new clubs.
32 toonoholic // May 21, 2008 at 14:52
well said craig .
what confuses me is that , we bid higher for modric and lose out on him.
and when we get the chance to sign a much better player ( watch out this space) , at a much lower cost , for the same position as modric , our board shies away.
I wonder what the problem is . I hope its not another turmoil with chris mort wanting to leave and so everything is in a standstill like last year .

38 craig chisholm // May 21, 2008 at 15:05
gary mac….what you on about mate…gala prez says he is ours for 13 million, turan himself says he wants to come….christ man, even mort should be able to sort that one out - in this case the press have helped us, they have been told by the prez and the player that the deal is sitting there (and has been for a week) waiting to get done. the good thing is, at least we know that mort cant bullshit us now when he does not land turan! Now with barton finished, carr gone, ramage gone, ameobi as good as gone, owen/taylor/harper all running out of contracts plus the others that have left, does no-one else think we should be signing?? our squad is paper thin. all it takes is a few of the good ens to get injured at the euro s and we are out of it man.

we need Mario Gomez..or cheaper version Patrick Helmes( Fc Cologne)..

his teammate Simon Rolfes midfielder is good player too…
50 JJ // May 21, 2008 at 15:40
It really is starting to seem to me as if we drew up a list of targets. And we set a maximum price we would pay and now they are either unavailable or unaffordable or just not interested.
The other names banded about are just because agents (devils) always use our club to promote players.
Turan doesnt seem a geniune target… the people who mention Henry and co are only kidding themselves. And Quite honestly I think that players are on holiday and agents are just doing some pre promos before the real transfer action begins.
I cannot remember the last time we signed a player before the Euro Champs ended.
The Barton issue has left us desperately short in midfield and we definately have to give NZogbia a go on the left now.
Milner would be first choice on the right so our best midfield at the moment looks like this:
Milner Butt Geremi N Zogbia
I dont know about you but I dont see thoe centre pairing scaring the daylights out of any team with pace or creativity!!!!!!!
We need another versatile winger, we need a defensive midfielder and we need a creative midfielder. We need a striker for Viduka. We need cover at left back and right back. And we need another central defender.
That is 7 players that are musts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We have no choice. So if we only have 20 Mil to spend we are in deep sh1t! Means we can only bring in very mediocre players or bosmans.
The sales of Duff, Smith, Ameobi and Rozenhal could give us another 10Mil so say we have 30Mil. We cant waste 15Mil on ONE player. That is perhaps why we cant offer more for players like Turan.
- (DC) Campbell would be good in defense (bosman)
- (DL) Shorey would be our cheapest option at LB at around 3Mil
- (DR) Aaron Hughes, could cover in any position at the back and never let us down (2M).
- (ST) Gudjohnssen would be a bargain up front at 7M
- (DM) Sean Davis would make good cover at around 2M
- (AM) Yossi Benayoun, we could get for around 6M and is a good affordable play maker.
- (AM/R/L) Park ji Sung would be a great versitile signing who could play on either wing at around 5M.
That would be 25M spent and you cannot tell me these arnt realistic buys. All of them would add value. All have premiership experience.
That would leave us with 5Mil to spend.
So we swap Emre 5M for Guran and we have this squad for a total of 30M spent.
GK: Harper/ Given
DR: Beye/ Hughes
DC: Faye/ Campbell/ Taylor/ Casapa/ Edgar
DL: Enrique/ Shorey
DM: Butt/ Davis
CM: Benayoun/ Gudjohnssen/ Geremi/ Barton
ML: N Zogbia/ Turan (R orL)
MR: Milner/ Sung Ji Park (R or L)
ST: Martins/ Owen/ Gudjohnssen/ Carroll and Viduka.
So in my humble opionion, we would be much stronger at the back. Have more depth in midfield (Turan and Benajoun would be our “creaters” along with some real flair on the wings. Gudjohnsen culd create up front and hold the ball. Some thing neither Smith or Ameobi offered.
51 Ian // May 21, 2008 at 15:41
NUFC fan - agree about Lua Lua he should be permanent first team.
Not worried about Carroll, but if we bring in a youngster I would like to see him sold and for us to bring in a proven striker for back up, we have good strikers but the team standard drops as soon as one of them isnt available and Owen and Viduka arent the most reliable players for fitness. I am not bothered if it was just Kitson from Reading as he is still a very good solid player and we would be grateful for him if Owen or Viduka went down for a few weeks. One young striker may be no improvement at the front, or if everyone remains fit he may not get a run out at all.
I would like to see two good midfielders for each position if possible as this could only be an improvement, two of those could be youngsters with potential.
Again at the back if possible, two good proven players for each position.
Splash the cash in the right areas, if we moved up the table again, then next transfer season we would have our pick of the top young strikers if we wanted some.
52 Geordie Gerrard7 // May 21, 2008 at 15:43
i have heard he is the next best thing, (keissling) is he a podolski kind of player?
53 JJ // May 21, 2008 at 15:43
If our current sqaud could finish 12th then this one could definately challenge for top 6. And I would be happy with that!
Then the following season we would be looking at what we are looking at now with a stronger squad and hopefully European football to draw top players in such as a top DC, and two top CM. Perhaps one top striker. That would really give us a great squad.
54 Zhun // May 21, 2008 at 15:44
Hard to believe that nasri is cheaper than modick!
Wenger is really a wise man compare to their rival
55 Obafan // May 21, 2008 at 15:48
And another forward. We have got top quality in front and all we need to do is give them new contracts, but nothing happens it seems.
All these rumours I can’t see the trees through the forrest anymore. What is true what not? We don’t know, even the press doesn’t know. I think it is also very hard to point the finger at Wise, Mort, Ashley, … cause none of us knows what is true, so we don’t know exactly what they are willing to do or what they are doing at the moment. How many times did the Arda story change in the last 3 days???
I still have my confidence in the board about getting new good players to the club, but I would ask them urgently to give new deals to our strikers Owen and Martins. That at this moment is TOP PRIORITY IMO!!! Cause what would happen if one day we lose one or both of them. I can’t think of that. If those deals are clinched then step uf the buying new players process and we will be a good solid team next season.
It really is possible to build a good strong team for next season (even without UEFA Cup football), but the board and managerial staff need to act step by step!
56 Steven1979 // May 21, 2008 at 15:50

64 JJ // May 21, 2008 at 16:00
Az, I think he feels the club got into trouble spending big amounts without achieving success.
So his policy is to spend small on young signings hoping that they develop into World class players. (alla Arsenal). The problem is Arsenal have actually gone down in recent years. And Keegan is the type of manager that needs big money. I hope Im wrong but I dont see us spending more than 30M even after selling this season. Remember we have no Europe and he just cleared our 70Mil pound debts.
65 toonoholic // May 21, 2008 at 16:02
JJ suppose we buy the players and we get champions league in 2 yrs from now . Let us also suppose during these 2 years , turan , veloso have gone to new bigger clubs . then the question to be asked is wld we be able to get these quality players again ?
if turan stars in the euro and so does veloso , their asking price wld double .
The answer to this is availability of players . Turan would not be available every transfer window . we shld have snapped him up in january itself when he was around 8mn , now his asking price has uped to 14 !

Obafan, I agree sign up the forwards we already have straight away, they are hard to improve on, then get one other proven scorer as they are going to have to fill the boots of an excellent player.
I dont know why Owen and Viduka arent sorted and some sort of confirmation on Oba, is it true his get out clause is still there?? I thought they re-negotiated it out?
The speculation could get worse not better as top players get signed up and we could lose some. West Ham want Taylor.
68 JJ // May 21, 2008 at 16:06
Steven 1979 - the reason I say this is we need to build up slowly. We need to add depth to our squad before we can look at World Class players.
No good us buying another superstars and he gets injured like Owen, Emre always are because then we’ve slpashed out big and we have the same squad only weaker!
Plus I dont think the likes of Gudjohnssen, Campbell and Shorey are average…
Park Ji Song and Benayoun both played in the Champions league Semi’s so they cant be that bad. And Aaron Hughes is an execellent squad player.
I doubt we can get Veloso BUT if we can and we have an extra 10Mil to spent then swap his name for Davis and see how our SQUAD not team starts to shape up. See… starts to look like top 5 material.

JJ
Big fat sam wanted to build up slowly and look what happend!!! Also Mike Ashley has told KK he wants a big improvement this season, so how the hell can we do that without spending about £50m?
It can’t be done, if it could every club in the league would be title contenders!!

JJ , buying a player is always a risk .
surely we can name right from luque to boumsong to viana to marcelinho. But also some of the risk are worth taking.
A very good example is Manchester united . They almost spent 15 mn each on nani and anderson , and i think anderson is much better than all of our midfielders put together.
We can buy players u suggest like davis and gudjhonssen, but at the cost of what ? uefa cup ?
what i am trying to say is , we need to splash money when it comes to midfield because it is midfield that can make or break a team!
look at united , they have ronaldo , scholes etc who can fire at cruicial moment . for arsenal , they have fabregas or hleb or had flamini .
chelsea have geremi or lampard or ballack
and liverpool have mr dependable named GERARD !
As a newcastle supporter i think we are very unlucky when it comes to getting quality midfielders from our youth system . It might be a flaw with our youth system as i recently saw that we did not sign aaron ramsey 2 years back and today he is linked to united and arsenal ! lennon was offered to us for 1 mn during robson era and we thought it was a shrewd deal then and look at him ? wont u like to have a player like him !The last i remember is jenas who has come out from our youth academy.!
when it comes to cb , rb and lb , i would be content with shorey , campbell etc. though i wld love to see a Cb with more flair .
Strikers , i think we just need a replacement for viduka .
Speaking about caroll , Its time he shines up . At this age , rooney was worth 25 mn . If caroll was worth the hype , he wld have proved a point or two . He might become and england internation but then what ? fade out like emile heskey and james beattie ? I think his growth has stagnated , within a year or two if we see no improvement , it looks like we have another championship player in the making .
I rest my case still saying SIGN TURAN and VELOSO!
74 Steven1979 // May 21, 2008 at 16:22
JJ: i have to remember u justC.Ronaldo. Manchester got him 12 million, he was 18. now they want 100 million for him..
Gudjohnsen 7 million u wrote. u can never get this money back..and he is not good enough for this money..but if we get veloso, turan or gomez may be we have to pay more but its possible that they can achieve great things..we need a Star..
75 JJ // May 21, 2008 at 16:25
Big Sam was useless, you cant compare him to KK. The football he played was negative and he never played to win.
Im not saying get in rubbish players. Just affordable good ones. Because I honestly dont see us attracting top top players at the mom.
If we could we would still need to bring in 9 players to have a decent sqaud with depth.
Do you see our board buying nine players?
Ok get Veloso instead of Davis and Arshravin instead of Benajoun if it pleases you BUT they wont come here (and both are unprovenin the EPL) .

There are no garauntees, transfers are always a gamble.
To be quite honest I think our biggest mistake was Owen at 17Mil.
We wouldnt get more than 8mil for him now. And he is nearly 30.
Just think of what young star striker we could have brought in for 17Mil.
8 Mil on boumsong, 10 Mil on Luque, 9 Mil on Viana but where are they now! All big name signings that cost us 30mil and what return did we get? Nada
77 Geordie Gerrard7 // May 21, 2008 at 16:37
im sooo pissed off today. i thought today would be the day, oh nooooo- just see arsenal spending 13 mill on nasri on the “JUST IN” on sky sports
78 Stami // May 21, 2008 at 16:39
is it just me, or does this kid have the SKINNIEST legs you have ever seen!!! they wont last 5 minutes against the likes of John Terry etc…lol!
79 Ian // May 21, 2008 at 16:39
I agree with JJ, we do need to build up at a sensible pace, the front is good it just needs one solid player to rotate and to cover for injuries, for example Cisse, Johnson or Kitson.
Midfield needs both solid proven older players who dont excite easily and some new talent. The back needs two good players for each position if possible.
Midfield and defense is going to be expensive.

Agree about Owen too JJ, Anelka was begging to come to Newcastle and we could have had Andy Johnson too!!
81 Geordie Gerrard7 // May 21, 2008 at 16:46
this remey fella or whatever he is called will end up at arsenal. they signed three more french fellas today
82 Az // May 21, 2008 at 16:49
Arsenal will be a major force next season as usual, the way things are going it looks like we are in for another crap season and won’t qualify for europe

stop talking trash about ashley..at least wait ’till september 1st…
84 JJ // May 21, 2008 at 16:51
Toonaholic - no arguements, our youth system has been a disaster. But that could also be because we get expensive buys in and dont give them a chance.
Jenas unfortunately wasnt our product - he was from Notts Forrest. : (.
Only decent player to come through has been Steven Taylor.
Huntington looks good but they moved him on too. Dunno why.
85 toonoholic // May 21, 2008 at 16:59
yeah hunti was good . was shocked to see him go last year .
86 Ashton // May 21, 2008 at 17:15
Remy is not good enough for us imo

toonaholic, not bad comments jenas was a forrest lad, i think he came for around five million eve nall those years ago. the five million then is the equivilent of alot more now thats for sure. oh yeah, chelsea dont have geremi any more, alas we have the donkey! i am just confused about our whole newcastle set up these days, honest. who is runnign what, what the fcuk any of them really are doing, the only one who we knwo for sure what he is doing is kk himself - he is runnign the first team. there was a bloke on here earlier on who said a good point, he saidthat fat sam got the bullet cos he was not giving results fast enough and that ashley has said repeatedly in the early days that he was going to make us great, now he wants top six blah blah… the fact is though, he does not want to spend any money on us… with mort jacking his hand in soon - RIGHT AT THE TRANSFER WINDOW!! - are we seeing them loose interest already i wonder? For sure they do not want to financially back up keegan, we already know that. they wont spend 6 million on the 29 yr old dune cos he is too old, but they wont spend 13 million on turan who is a world class promising talent at 21? what do our board realy want……i have no idea anymore, i certainly dont think they are bothered too much about what goes on on the field as they have no ambition. paying off debt is great and very admirable but it does not have any meaning wotsoever regarding expecting results o nthe pitch and i wish mort would stop harping on about it trying to link the two together…. does he think we are as thick as wisey? so i dont know lads, get a blog going Ed - what does mort and ashley really want??
89 tapir // May 21, 2008 at 21:26
mort have got to comeback here and explained to us what MA and you want!!
Mort
