There was news yesterday that Newcastle Chairman Chris Mort wants to leave Newcastle United to return to his law firm Freshfields.

And news today in the Daily Mail that Mike Ashley will move quickly to replace the departing Chairman.
The Daily Mail is reporting today that Mike Ashley is expected to respond to the departure of chairman Mort, as revealed yesterday in their Sports Agenda, by upgrading Deputy Chairman Derek Llambias to the full Chairman position.
Llambias only recently left his role as managing director of Fifty London, a capital gambling club, to join the new Newcastle team at St James’ Park on May 5th.
It seems likely now that Derek’s appointment a few weeks ago, was a pre-cursor to Chris Mort returning to his law firm, at which he is a Partner.
Mr Llambias has worked in the entertainment and leisure industry for more than 30 years, most recently as Managing Director of the prestigious and exclusive Fifty Club at 50 St James, London.
He has also known Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley for many years.
Llambias is well respected by Mike Ashley, and he’ll certainly have a big job on his hands, if he indeed installed as Newcastle’s new Chairman.
Note: This will only be official once the Newcastle United club formally make an announcement of course, but we believe this is what is about to happen at Newcastle.
