Derek Llambias to Become New Chairman At Newcastle

There was news yesterday that Newcastle Chairman Chris Mort wants to leave Newcastle United to return to his law firm Freshfields.

And news today in the Daily Mail that Mike Ashley will move quickly to replace the departing Chairman.

The Daily Mail is reporting today that Mike Ashley is expected to respond to the departure of chairman Mort, as revealed yesterday in their Sports Agenda, by upgrading Deputy Chairman Derek Llambias to the full Chairman position.

Llambias only recently left his role as managing director of Fifty London, a capital gambling club, to join the new Newcastle team at St James’ Park on May 5th.

It seems likely now that Derek’s appointment a few weeks ago, was a pre-cursor to Chris Mort returning to his law firm, at which he is a Partner.

Mr Llambias has worked in the entertainment and leisure industry for more than 30 years, most recently as Managing Director of the prestigious and exclusive Fifty Club at 50 St James, London.

He has also known Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley for many years.

Llambias is well respected by Mike Ashley, and he’ll certainly have a big job on his hands, if he indeed installed as Newcastle’s new Chairman.

Note: This will only be official once the Newcastle United club formally make an announcement of course, but we believe this is what is about to happen at Newcastle.

you know its all well and good signing coaches and back room staff etc how about some players ??

good luck to him if he takes over though and a big thank you goes to chris mort i think he has done a very good job but now the focus needs to be on new players !!

Hey and atleast this new guy (Derek Llambias) isnt a THFC supporter !! Would prefer David Dein like myself !! Mind he was tight with the cash at arsenal and thats not what we need – splash the cash !!!

It’s warming to know that a Geordie will be at the helm. Chris Mort seemed sensible enough but I never truly believed in his passion for the area. I always had him down as a trouble shooter that was at NUFC to manage the changeover, putting new structures in place. I think he has done this admirably and thank him for his involvement.

Lets hope Derek Llambias has the experience to compete in the frankly vicious business sector of football. He doesn’t seem to have a football background so will need finances to make his name. There’s always been a club of chairmen and I hope Llambias gains their respect or we could be out in the cold for a while. It was a different story with Mort as everyone knew he wasn’t permanent.

geordie gerrad, chrsit you are right man, he loks jsut liek a fcuking owl… amazing. i am glad mort is going too. shame its happened right now so that we have yet antoher disjointed fcuk up of a transfer window. is this mike ashleys plan, every transfer window sack a manager, then the following window change the chairman out?? that saves him having to dork out on transfers due to the ‘new appointments’ bedding in. its all shit and i am arsed off with the lot of it. there is too much patting on the backs and behind the scenes crap going on but with zero positive impact on the pitch. i think we will be in a relegation fight all season long unless we sign some proven prem players and one or two young prodigy types like turan. i think that since the euphoria of getting rid of fat sam has died down, we are left with the fact that our new owner will not spend a bastard penny he does not have too on players. we have become a boring club with no respect or ambition and thats why we can not get any players. can anyone think of any famous owl names??

This wud explain alot.If we scouted berbatov, they wud aswell even though they bloody own him already, unbelievable.

Looks like he has one of them nose and goggle combo’s on from the joke shop.

I just think the whole backroom set up is terrible and will set us back years….running a gambling den to chairman of newcastle..these appointments are a joke surely?

As mentioned on many earlier posts still no signings zzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

mort was a decent chairman, i mean he didn’t have a clue about football but he was slick.

as for this new guy, he worked at a gambling club? another high appointment who has no connnection with NUFC or any previous footballing background.
basically he’s going to be ripping off the fans as much as possible to make as much profit as he can and not have the supporters or the football club’s real interests in mind. sounds good to me.

Just been looking at the Setanta sports news site. Sir John Hall says no need to panic the Mort move is all part of the plan from the start. It says Malcom MacDonald says KK should bin Barton – not because he’s in the nick (but should be in the bin imo) but because he is simply not good enough for NUFC. I reckon big Mac is right. They also highlight the story about Sassegnon and NUFC. Get him – he looks like Oba! I wonder if Joey had porage for breakfast?

Dont know if you want to read anything into this. I was on a stag do in Edinburgh back in February when early in the night me and all my mates left a pub. One of my mates has a very strong Geordie accent. A random bloke picked up on this – stopped us and asked if we supported NUFC (which a couple of us do) he then told us his brother David Williams was being taken on in some capacity on the board at Newcastle on March 28th, then he would eventually take over Chris Mort as chairman. Naturally we thought this bloke was talking a load of sh*te. So i decided to take note of this – nothing happened on March 28th (to my amazement!!) but about a 2 weeks later sure enough David Williams was appointed operations director. Im not saying anything more will come of this, but i believe its worth bearing it in mind, i will be.

chris mort has done himself proud and is what a chairman should be, not like freddy before him. he restored faith and the connection between club and fans and i thought he has handled himself well.

cheers chris, good luck with your endeavours in life.

    Bye Bye Mr Mort….

As per usual, GREAT timing by the mighty NUFC….. Fed up of this constant change, its about time we had some positive news ( BIG players ) instead of flucking backroom staff changes…..

And not a renewal letter in sight.

Do they really WANT us in the stadium next season ?

We haven’t got a clue whats gonna happen to our club yet we are supposed to renew on sheer belief.

SHOCKING. come on MA gives us some hope to grasp on too….

As for Jail bird Joey … he has TWO more offences which he is yet to face trial for, think we can say goodbye to that one,

    up steps Emre,

    Wow

Who are the Muppet’s complaining about bad timing?

THERE ISNT A BETTER TIME TO CHANGE OUR CHAIRMAN !!!!!!!!!!!!!

or would it make more sense to change chairman DURING the season?

get a grip you doom mongers !

Mort has done a brilliant job, the club is being run PROFESSIONALY, it’s not in severe financial trouble anymore.

As for complaining about signings – THE TRANSFER WINDOW ISNT EVEN OPEN YET !!!!!!!!!!!

get a grip – the seasons has literally just finished, every man and his dog will be off on holiday or preparing for euro 2008 and we want signings NOW.

Time to grow up and realise this ISNT a computer game.

I’m looking forward to a good and productive summer 🙂
