Newcastle United’s friendly against Rangers on August 6th has now been canceled, after Rangers saw their chance of winning the SPL fail due to their 2-0 defeat at Aberdeen last night.

Celtic won 1-0 at Dundee United, so Celtic win the title for a 3rd season in a row under Gordon Strachan.
Walter Smith’s side now face a Champions League second qualifying round second-leg tie on either August 5th or 6th, which means the friendly game on Tyneside that was previously arranged, can no longer take place.
But Newcastle are now moving fast to finalize their alternative plans, and the game with Valencia at St. James’ Park looks is now almost certain to go ahead. Valencia finished in 10th place in the Spanish Primera División last season.
The game against the Spanish side is set for Saturday, August 9th, and there are also three friendly games to be played against local opposition.
Newcastle are set to send a team to play against Bishop Auckland on July 11, and then they go to newly-promoted Gateshead on July 21st, and then on August 6th a Newcastle side will play against Newcastle Blue Star.
Not exactly top-class opposition, but it will certainly help the local clubs at the gate.
Comments very welcome.

valencia game would be good, thought we were going to be going across the continent though, good for the local sides but would have prefered some tough opposition to get us ready for the season ahead.

Can’t this game just be rearranged, I have been hoping for this game for a while now, since I know people from Glasgow who are Rangers fans.
Surely the other games apart from Valencia will be played with our reserves, we need more then one decent team to play against and surely their is time for this game to be played aswell.

We had good opposition last season tho and look how that season turned out, it doesnt matter about the opposition, its just about getting the players playing some football again

WOW, with opposition like that, we will be off to a flying start in the Prem. They will really push our team and bring out the best.
I’m suprised the ticket queue isnt already starting!!! Underwhelmed.
5 mitch // May 23, 2008 at 13:10
speaking of tickets has any one had season ticket renewal yet

Im waiting to see what happens with the transfers before i cmmit myself. I just could not watch the same bile as i watched last season. To many lows and not enough highs.

from setanta sports, 23rd may
Ivica Olic’s agent has exclusively told setantasports.com that the Hamburg attacker has not been approached by Portsmouth, but he has refused to distance him from a move to Newcastle in the summer.
The Croatia international will play Euro 2008 first, and then negotiate a move away from HSV according to his representative.
The talented Bundesliga player was one of the heroes against England at Wembley, and may be on the verge of a move across The Channel.
Harry Redknapp’s Portsmouth and Kevin Keegan’s Newcastle have both been rumoured to be closely watching Olic, and when asked if he denied having any contact with the clubs, agent Gordon Stipic told setantasports.com that: “I have not spoken directly with Portsmouth, but Newcastle…
“I definitely think he will be leaving this summer.
“We will wait for the end of Euro 2008 to take a decision.
“England is an option for him, obviously.
“We have contacts in England and in Spain as well, but I cannot say much at this stage.â€

thank god that rangers game is off , cant say ive talked to many who were pleased about it .
WOLVES have just signed sam vokes ahead of us

dunno what to say .

It’s a pity Rangers game had to be cancelled.I was a steward when they were last in Toon for pre season tpurnament(just prior to signing Boumsong) and what an atmosphere they create. It was a great weekend. Was at Shearers testimonial v Celtic and the 3000 they brought down were by far the noisiest I have heard in my time at the toon.
We are all gonna miss out on a great occasion thro the Hoops winning the SPL yet again.
After manchester last week I bet the local constabulary are breathing a sigh of relief.
We need to see some top class opposition this pre season to hit the ground running although there is also a need to support local teams.
13 James // May 23, 2008 at 13:39
Sam Vokes has got sick of waiting for us to bid even though he wanted to come here.
At this rate there will be no players left to buy. Smith starting up front next season as our main striker it looks like
14 James // May 23, 2008 at 13:40
As for Rangers came being cancelled, why don’t we play Ipswich instead like Bobby Robson wanted us to for his cancer campaign?
15 Frankieboy // May 23, 2008 at 13:42
Am sure KK still got some friends in Hamburg, could make the difference as he was idolised over there too.
16 ToonKing // May 23, 2008 at 13:42
proper piss take this Vokes ordeal…..
17 Frankieboy // May 23, 2008 at 13:46
James.
What a cracking idea, wriggle out of that one MA.Its the perfect opportunity to get this worthwhile event up and running.
They too play in blue but will not do as much damage both on & off the pitch.
18 John // May 23, 2008 at 13:47
Lads vokes went to wolves..Its not a major loss is it?
If he gone to another prem team id be bit concerened but maybe he does’nt quite cut the mustard and isn’t good enough for the prem.
Its not like a host off prem teams were after him aswell…Zambrela wil probably be better anyway
19 Frankieboy // May 23, 2008 at 13:50
See that photo opposite comment 14…
which one is Mike Ashley ha!!
Answers please to Ed!!
Pretty sure the other guy is a Jarra lad.
20 Angryman the Angry fan // May 23, 2008 at 13:52
Sam Vokes was a dead cert to sign for NUFC bfore the bournmouth buy out started. That Kyboshed the deal. However, surely once all that was settled the lad should have put pen to paper for us, that was widely reported!!
This is absolute crap!!
Wise and Jiminez seem to be making a great job of signing young and promising players at the minute, Moric….Vokes…….
Never mind, I am sure KK wil be sacked half way through the transfer window, when we have no players present, a new bloke appointed the week before it slams shut and the circle keeps turning, and Mr Ashley, Wise, Vitere (the encyclopedia of all knowledge) and jiminez all become very rich from gleaning massive profits and they all live happily ever after.
Marvellous

Frankie Boy, if you know who he is pass his number over, he has a lovely pair of chebs……………..
22 Sun'lun's Burnin' // May 23, 2008 at 13:54
Olic!!?? bore off he is not good enough for our team, can’t believe people want him. he got 14 goals last season in a terrible league. how will he improve us? no room for anymore squad players, we got enough of them, we need some talent, flair and desire injecting into the team. I dont know who exactly could do that but i dont get paid big bucks by cashley to do that so i wont try. Dennis Wise needs to pull his finger out and do his job instead of swanning off with his family.
