News today in the Daily Mirror that Manchester City have made a bid for Russian captain Andrei Arshavin.

Andrei Arshavin - is Keegan interested?
Manchester City owner Thaksin Shinawatra is reported to be making an £11M bid for Zenit St Petersburg striker Andrei Arshavin - after the player lifted the UEFA Cup at Eastlands, last week.
The Thai owner would like to bring the talented Russian to the club quickly, to appease unhappy fans who are expecting the sacking of Sven Eriksson shortly. Talks with the Russian are to said to have already begun.
This is happening even though the owner has yet to officially announce that Sven Eriksson is sacked, and that’s not to mention there is no idea who the new manager will be.
But this is a sign, for any potential new manager at the club, that the Thai wants to run the club himself, and that’s a hardly a good sign for anybody.
Sam Allardyce was interested in Arshavin, who has impressed a lot this season, but we don’t know what Kevin Keegan thinks of the player.
City hope to finance the deal by selling defender Richard Dunne and midfielder Stephen Ireland, with Roy Keane presumably leading the chase.
If Stephen Ireland is available, he would seem to fit with Newcastle’s strategy of bringing in youngsters still to develop. Stephen looks a very good player who is still just 21 years old and has already played for the Eastlands club over 80 times.
What do you think?
Comments welcome.

Would love arshavin if we got him.Ireland is good player aswell but not sure if he be right for the toon.

I think if KK was interested in Arshavin we would have had something in the wind by now.
The fact is we do not know who KK wants or is
considering moving for. It does seem as though we are having to compete with a group of clubs below the gang of four. E.g., Everton, Man City, Spurs, Villa, Pompey and Blackburn. It will take some time but I think the only club that can eventually break the stranglehold of the top 4 is NUFC.
4 THELONGSHANKS // May 23, 2008 at 10:41
Eric- I hope your right.
5 The Entertainers // May 23, 2008 at 10:42
Arshavin would be an excellent sigining. However if Ardan rumour is true i cant see us signing both. Both players appear to have similar abilities, both can play on the left or can be the creative force behind the strikers. As for lreland i’m not sure, he has played a major role in City’s revival and is young enough though. I would prefer a more defensive midfielder.

I actually was thinking about how much Man City will spend this summer. This would be a good indicator of how ambitious the board actually are IMO. I would be very disappointed if we have failed to march Man city by a big margin, we certainly are not smaller than Man C, are we?
I don’t believe anything the press says about Thaksin as I don’t believe he is such a fool. Come on, you are talking about a multi-millioniar who was also the prime minister of Thailand. He is a winner and a winner can not be a fool.
I personally think he has every right to sack Eriksson as he has supported him by spending about 50m with a return of 13 extra points compare to last year, and if he thinks it is not a good return, then it is not.
7 Davies // May 23, 2008 at 10:44
Shame if he goes to City. At least Spurs won’t get him if he does though.
8 Marat18 // May 23, 2008 at 10:48
There is another rumour in Russia - that CSKA’s striker Zo (Zho?) transfer to Man City is a done deal and brazilian is already in England.
20 mill punds mentioned, but it’s believed that this price tag is too high for City and they will have a loan deal with future transfer option.
So, I’m not sure that Chinahwa (or whatever the name of this Thai is) will sign two strikers form Russian PL.
9 peptheblue // May 23, 2008 at 10:50
I have the upmost respect for newcastle as a team but Eric’s views are dillusional. Newcastle are NO more likely than us or Aston Villa to break into the top 4. As for Arshavin - we’re in the UEFA next season albeit with a stroke of good fortune so I can see this happening.
Thing is.. i can see Dunne going Villa for around £5m (not bad considering we paid £3m in 2000) and Ireland going to Sunderland (because of Keane)
good luck next season anyways.. should be interesting.
10 SuperShearer // May 23, 2008 at 10:51
No player in his right mind should sign for a club that doens’t have a manager and no manager in his right mind should sign for a club that is managed by the owner. In other words until City sack and replace Sven, or keep him they are in a state of limbo. We have to take advantage of this. Get Dunne, get Ireland (he would be a great squad player) and highlight to people that City are run by a ruthless man that wants to be a manager more than an owner.

Marat18, JO? I read that somewhere too.

Exactly, Jo.

Cant see anyone wanting to go to man shitty at the moment ,as the club seems very unstable ,and no one knows whats happening there from 1 day to the next.I would welcome s.ireland ,think he is an excellent young prospect ,better player than Barton imo ,technically and obviously mentallylol

so not a fool yeah, just a little corrupt

Bob,
it sounds like Zho, but I remember that there were 2 letters in his name, so thought it’s Zo.
Whatever, Zo, Zho, Jo, the message is - he is going to city and may be they don’t have much transfer funds available if they have to sell Dunne and Ireland to buy Arshavin and are aiming only loan deal for Jo.
Well, they seem in a more mess then we were year ago.

no news on Turan, Liverpool goes for Riera, City after Arshavin and Jo, meanwhile KK steps up the chase for Sessegnon………….pffff this is getting beyond a bad joke….
26 Bosck // May 23, 2008 at 12:13
wouldnt believe this rumour too much until something concrete actually happens for 2 reasons:
1) its in the mirror, nuff said
2) arshavin was the star of the uefa cup final so will probably be linked with most of the clubs in the league who need to make signings because the sports press in this country would rather be lazy and make things up rather than actually do any real research.
27 Eric // May 23, 2008 at 12:18
Looked up your site info Scottish Mag. I hope KK does go for this player. Trouble is, as the item says, Arse’n'Banger is sniffing around as well. Well, if he’s good enough for the original Brylcreem Boys he’s good enough for us. Ideal replacement for Butt eventually.
28 Tom_Toon // May 23, 2008 at 12:21
Sessegnon is a good player.
ToonKing - What do you think about Kankava and Hladky.
29 Neilos // May 23, 2008 at 12:26
They will most likely get him due to European football.
30 ToonKing // May 23, 2008 at 12:27
yes Sessegnon is good, but not in the league of those mentioned.
Hladky is a very good big man in the making and he can score very well.
never seen Kankava, all i know is that he’s Georgian.

from setanta sports
Ivica Olic’s agent has exclusively told setantasports.com that the Hamburg attacker has not been approached by Portsmouth, but he has refused to distance him from a move to Newcastle in the summer.
The Croatia international will play Euro 2008 first, and then negotiate a move away from HSV according to his representative.
The talented Bundesliga player was one of the heroes against England at Wembley, and may be on the verge of a move across The Channel.
Harry Redknapp’s Portsmouth and Kevin Keegan’s Newcastle have both been rumoured to be closely watching Olic, and when asked if he denied having any contact with the clubs, agent Gordon Stipic told setantasports.com that: “I have not spoken directly with Portsmouth, but Newcastle…
“I definitely think he will be leaving this summer.
“We will wait for the end of Euro 2008 to take a decision.
“England is an option for him, obviously.
“We have contacts in England and in Spain as well, but I cannot say much at this stage.â€

Ireland! Naaah.
Olic, dont think so.
Sessegnon? hav`nt seen him play.

63 toonoholic // May 23, 2008 at 15:14
well after euro , we can forget buying any player who wld be taking part in the euro because their prices wld increase if they do well.
that leaves us with africa and south america, i am not yet counting north america and asia & australia
africa = ANC cup , so we wont buy much of players from there
south america = newcastle last brought solano 10 years back, so i doubt that continent interests us
asia, australia and north america = talent hard to find at this moment
that leaves us with one team not qualified for euro, the lovely england .
but the english players are too costly .
so that might just about leave us empty handed this transfer window.
64 Steven1979 // May 23, 2008 at 15:19
Olic is not good enough to play in PL..he has diffuculties in Bundesliga even..From Hamburg we can get Rafa Van Der Vaart only..but he wants to play in Spanish league..Tschorowsky is a good winger and he is young..But he needs one more year to develop..but then it will be very expensive to get..he plays for Germany in Euro too.. But Olic is just shite..Klasnic is better than him and costs no penny..But I dont want Klasnic too..
65 Tom_Toon // May 23, 2008 at 15:23
Guerrero is he only decent hamburg striker, Zidan is also shite, thats why they rely on vdv for goals.
I like Olic but only as a bench player instead of smith, not to start.
66 toonoholic // May 23, 2008 at 15:30
did i read klasnic is shite ? did anybody see him play when they beat schalke for 5-0 ?or some flattering scoreline as that ? klasnic was immense in that game as a substitute . he scored one and gave 2 assists i think
67 Steven1979 // May 23, 2008 at 15:33
We need talenten guyz for the first team immidiately..I cant think at the moment the bench..First we’ve build up our first team..Then we can think about the bench..
68 toonoholic // May 23, 2008 at 15:38
steven the only talent with flair that we frankly have in the whole of midfield is nzogbia (attitude problem)and lua lua( he is young).
butt is a hardworking midfielder.
barton seems to have lost the plot, he was class in mancity .
milner is hardworking too , but he doesnt have natural flair
duff and emre need a vacation.
since last year , we were crying out aloud for a defence revamp .
this year its a midfield revamp.
we sold dyer , parker , solano ( 3 of our best midfielders to be frank) and we brought in joey and geremi . so we are still short in midfield.
the last midfielder who actually controlled our midfield was GARY SPEED !
69 Steven1979 // May 23, 2008 at 15:39
He is over..such good moments can every player have..he wants to go to Qatar or smt. like this at the moment..After his injury last year he can be never fit again like b4.
70 toonoholic // May 23, 2008 at 15:44
i wonder why SBR sold him , he still gave good 4 years to bolton after that .
71 Steven1979 // May 23, 2008 at 15:45
exactly i mean this..our midfield is just shite..But Klasnic or Olic are strikers..We neeed smbdy like Rafa van der Vaart..Turan..Veloso..I still hope Emre will have a good comeback after EUro..
Our first signing has to be TURAN or VELOSO or better BOTH..
72 toonoholic // May 23, 2008 at 15:52
yup , we need to start building a team around a good CM.
at this moment we wrongly built a team around 3 strikers . even a 5 yr old kid knows that its the midfield that can make the difference at the end of the day.
ps : maybe if we remove our recruitment team(wise and whatever the other guys name is ) , we shall save almost 7 mn a year salary !
73 Steven1979 // May 23, 2008 at 15:57

City fan here.
I dont want to go on about the state of our club, as obviously its a Newccie Blog that I stumbled across.
Just to put you guys in the picture though, as far as we’re concerned down here, it seems this story is more stemming from *BaldBum’s* (Arshavin) agent in Russian press.
As many of you have pointed out, City’s short term future needs addressing, and at this stage all we know is that Frank is holding an end of season review to ask Mr. Eriksson how the club managed to slip away in such a pitiful manner.
Until this review has taken place, (and word is, Sven will be staying) then I cant see any players either coming into City, or going out (i.e. Dunne or Ireland)
As for you guys, I cannot recommend Ireland. He is undoubtedly talented, but only when HE can be arsed. You lads like players to sweat for the shirt like we do, and if you want players like that, Ireland would irritate the sh*t out of you.
If you get Dunne, he is a class player, but one of those who, when he makes a mistake it is ALWAYS punished…(i.e. Titus Bramble) and I think if Newcastle have serious aspiritions of breaking anywhere near the top four, or in it, then a team that contains Dunne and IReland will not do it.
Anyhow, hope you all have a nice summer, and good luck for next season.
-->
