Newcastle Sleep and Wolves Pinch Sam Vokes?

May 23rd, 2008 by Ed Harrison · 64 Comments

It seems that Wolves have beaten Newcastle to the punch, and signed 18 year-old Bournemouth striker Sam Vokes.

Sam Vokes - signs for Wolverhampton Wanderers

18 year-old Vokes has reportedly completed his medical successfully, and signed a four-year deal with the Championship club, who just missed out this season on a play-off place to Watford on goal difference.

Vokes has been talked about as a target since January, and we’re not sure if he was on Newcastle’s list of youngsters they wanted to bring in during the summer.

Sam played for Bournemouth 54 times and scored 16 goals, and has represented the Welsh Under-21 side 9 times and scored 4 goals.

Mick McCarthy, the former Sunderland and Ireland manager told Wolves’ official website:

“Sam is a great young talent who our scouts have been watching for some time.”

“I saw him when he played for the Wales Under-21s against England last week and he was excellent.”

“He is a target man who is physical, strong and good in the air. He was involved in a real scrap in trying to keep Bournemouth up at the end of the season.”

It was tough but will have been a good experience for such a young player.”

“I have been impressed with him and I think he is quite capable of doing well in this league despite his tender years.”

If indeed Vokes was a Newcastle target, then it’s not good we haven’t signed him. He’s certainly an excellent acquisition for Wolverhampton, that’s for sure.

We have to believe that if Newcastle wanted to get the youngster he could have been signed. Sam has already made it clear that he would have loved to play at Newcastle.

If that is not the case, then it’s disappointing we were beaten to it by Wolves, and that doesn’t auger well for the upcoming transfer season at the club.

As we said, we can only think that he wasn’t really a target for the Tyneside club.

Comments welcome.

    ever any good news?

  • 2 Sun'lun's Burnin' // May 23, 2008 at 15:25

bottom line is, if we had wanted him, we wudda got him.

obviously aint that good or other prem sides/ newly relegated to championship sides wudda had him instead of mid table wolves who have lurch as their manager.

  • 3 obafemimartins // May 23, 2008 at 15:26

    no

  • 4 broon ale // May 23, 2008 at 15:27

losing out to wolves, desperate times.
Like you say though Ed. Maybe we were never after him. If he was that good surely a premiership team would have snapped him up.

  • 5 chennai toon // May 23, 2008 at 15:29

do we have any transfer funds?………………….sick of all rumours………….yet to hear a good news……………….

  • 6 ObaFan2 // May 23, 2008 at 15:29

Well done again our super new recruitment team !!

Maybe we didn’t want him atleast thats what I’d like to think.

  • 7 Tom_Toon // May 23, 2008 at 15:30

WDF are you all on about, he wants to develop and play FIRST TEAM football at a higher standard, that is what he has done.

  • 8 KKK // May 23, 2008 at 15:32

We already have a 19year old who is a target man, strong and good in the air. If we were after Vokes we easily would have got him. We have bigger players to be signing like Turan, Gomez, Veloso, etc.

Chill fellas there is 5 weeks until the transfer window opens!

  • 9 chennai toon // May 23, 2008 at 15:32

lille’s makoun wants a move away from lille…………….we should go for him……………….

  • 10 Hadrian // May 23, 2008 at 15:33

was only a couple of days ago we had reports that wise was still really interested in vokes , and we were gonna loan him back to bournmouth after we got him .
he’s just got a international callup from the sheep lovers aswell , mighta missed out on a future ryan giggs or bellamy here :P

  • 11 John // May 23, 2008 at 15:33

    So?

How excited would you actualy get if he signed and started? Could’nt give to shites that we missed him..like Sun’lun’s Burnin’ said , if we really wanted him we would off got him

  • 12 Tom_Toon // May 23, 2008 at 15:34

Dont rate Makoun, id rather hae Binya for cheap.

  • 13 HeronMag // May 23, 2008 at 15:34

I agree with Tom Toon. He’s a first team player and realistically that would have not happened at Newcastle for another 4-5 years. Good luck to the lad.

I’m a bit gutted we didn’t get him but at least at Wolves we’ll get a better indication of just how talented he is. If he doesn’t make the grade there we know he’s not good enough for Newcastle United.

  • 14 steve // May 23, 2008 at 15:34

I wish people would stop saying we’re losing out to teams when we clearly have no interest in the player.

In fact I wish people would stop writing about transfers that are clearly just made up to fill paper space

  • 15 Hadrian // May 23, 2008 at 15:35

and reports zamberela isnt happy on tyneside isnt there .
not that it matters that we have a player in vokes position , this is a human cash farm we are running here not a bloody football club , more players to sell on the better !!!!

  • 16 Chris // May 23, 2008 at 15:36

Seems we have shown interest in Croacian striker Ivica Olic according to Setanta. He’s got a very good strike rate per game. We might have to wait till the end of Euro 2008 though.

  • 17 Eric // May 23, 2008 at 15:36

There did not seem to be any enthusiasm on the part of NUFC to get him. Getting the impression that our so-called recruitment team are looking only at continental Europe. Either that or they think Football Manager 2008 on their PC’s is real! Also get the impression that the club is being run by discussions on mobile phones and emails. Give KK the cash and the reins and lets get on with building a quality side instead of poncing around in London offices.

  • 18 Geordie Gerrard7 // May 23, 2008 at 15:37

if we wanted him we could of had him, i dont rate him too much, will be a good player at a team like birmingham or something in a few years. Much like our andy carroll, i dont think he will make the grade

  • 19 Taiwantoon // May 23, 2008 at 15:38

Not that worried really. The number of promising young players is huge, and we can’t have them all.

Plus I really don’t think KK’s priority is to sign players for 5 years later. Considering our current squad size and quality, any sensible manager would be concerntrate on players for today for the moment.

  • 20 ChrisL // May 23, 2008 at 15:40

As a player of that age, he’d have to be aware that he’s far more likely to break through to the Wolves 1st team, there will be plenty of time for him to move to an even bigger club later.

  • 21 Hadrian // May 23, 2008 at 15:40

you guy are missing the point , we wont be just buying players to make the first team .
we will buy up anything that looks like a profit can be made in a few years down the line

  • 22 KKK // May 23, 2008 at 15:43

The reports that where coming through were saying that Wise was trying his best to push the signing of Vokes through. Keegan is the one that has the final say on signings so maybe he simply didn’t rate him.

  • 23 Mr T // May 23, 2008 at 15:51

I’ve seen vokes in person, and he really isn’t that good, all my league 1 mates laughed when they heard we were after him.

  • 24 Steven1979 // May 23, 2008 at 15:51

com’on guyz..he is not better than our Carroll..
at the moment we dont need adventures we need real players..

  • 25 paul p // May 23, 2008 at 15:52

to me, the first and foremost is the higher you finish in the league, the more chance you have of attracting young top talent. That is a fact of the matter. The only way we will get top and a mean top talent is by finishing in the top 5. now to do that we need to be sorting out the 1st team squad first. we need quality top players such as arda turan, asharvin (changed my mind on him, he’s quality), ronaldinho, velso, dunne, cuellar?? not sure about him as only playing in scottish league which is nothing compared to premiership as we saw with boumsong, bridge, gomis, there will be a few out of the european championships who we will go for as well. We need to make a signing shortly with the season ticket applications due to be sent out. needs to be someone big to attract sales me thinks

  • 26 joe // May 23, 2008 at 15:55

Carroll is a better player anyway. With players like Godsmark and Baheng also we are well covered with young talent not to mention Lua Lua.

  • 27 Jamie // May 23, 2008 at 16:34

I’m completely bored and tired of the fact we have not yet signed anyone, do we actually want to improve? why are we paying 3 extra wages for 3 people who have yet to sign anyone decent? I’m confused and quite frankly numb!!

  • 28 Bill F // May 23, 2008 at 16:38

Any one remember another Bournemouth player by name of Ted McDougal, used to score loads of goals at the lower levels but wasn’t able to step up to the higher grade. I’m not saying Vokes couldn’t do it but it can be tough. We have promising young forwards what we need is someone like Crouch or one of the other myriad of players who have been mentioned.

  • 29 Toon1978 // May 23, 2008 at 16:38

Arshavin is attracting interest from Everton and Vokes off to Wolves. Its strange to me but the last two transfer windows have seen major changes ie KK in the last transfer window and Mort very near this window which poses an excuse that signings are not a priority but getting STAFF in is the priority. ALAWAYS something happenning APART frm signings. I am sorry but i am losing a little patience in ASHLEY firstly MODRIC, now VOKES and ARDA no more news ARSHAVIN now linked with EVERTON. I really think ASHLEY does not have any interst in spending money for our supporters. In the EVENING CHRONICLE they are going on about season ticket preperation WHAT A CHEEK i think i will be holding back to see what he does in signings because i am not watching the rubbish i watched last season i think a refund would of been a sensible thing LOL. Before the fat greedy play boy ASHLEY starts getting pound signs in his SCROOGED blinkers maybe he should spend on DECENT players. Seems to me its all take and no give with this fella ATM

  • 30 Mark // May 23, 2008 at 16:50

its been like 2 weeks since the league finished and people are getting angry at the fact that we havent signed anyone .
what teams so far have gone out and bought players? not many.

  • 31 Toon1978 // May 23, 2008 at 16:57

MARK i am not angry but do you not think it is sensible to tie up players BEFORE the EUROS. Hmmmm i think it is ARDA 13m euros after the EUROS he will be double that. ARSHAVIN not sure what his price would be but believe me it will alot now with winning the UEFA cup. I have been buying season tickets for years since the last time KK was here so i think i am entitled to feel a little distresses, after all i dont just buy a season ticket for myself but for my son also which is quite a hefty chunk of money. At the end of the day i want to see good football for the money myself and anybody else pays we have one of the highest wage turn overs i think 3 or 4th but we
were no where near that position in the league.

  • 32 Nobby's dad // May 23, 2008 at 17:10

Toon1978….You type some nonesense at times. will you please stop going on and on and on about us not moving for players!! Those not off to the Euros will be going on holiday and those going to the Euros will be concentrating on that.

If you were a professional footballer going to Euro 2008 would you sign BEFORE you went?? If you have real faith in your ability you’ll go, excel and then see who comes in for you…..play well and you’ll be able to demand more cash. Its commom sense!

  • 33 Steven1979 // May 23, 2008 at 17:20

Nobody’s Dad: i think u are an optimist. Its not my job but i’ve to type u just 1 name dont need to explain anything…There are a lot of but i can just say:

    MODRIC………..

  • 34 Gary Mac // May 23, 2008 at 17:26

“i am not angry but do you not think it is sensible to tie up players BEFORE the EUROS.”

You seem not to realise that 99.9% of players contracts end on June 31st.
Besides do you think that only Newcastle are after players of Arshavins calibre. He will have a wide choice of moves to pick from. Newcastle will probably already have their new signings wrapped up ready to be announced when it suits.

  • 35 Frankieboy // May 23, 2008 at 17:41

Reality is we didn’t really want or need him not even for the future and he wants the chance for first team football (which he has been used to albeit in the lower echolons) sooner rather than later and by getting that at Wolves he may be putting himself in a bigger shop window than before. He would not of had that opportunity here, well not for quite some time yet. Simple as.

  • 36 erica // May 23, 2008 at 18:54

He rejected a more lucrative offer from Newcastle for obvious reasons according to a source who predicted his signing last week.
Bigger club, more 1st team football and nicer area near his Dorset home.

  • 37 Toon Steve // May 23, 2008 at 19:24

Hey toon1978, I hope you don’t renew the season tickets for you and your son because you are just the type of johnny come lately whinger that the club could do without…Ashley fat, greedy and scrooge like…don’t make me laugh, he has pumped £250m of his own money in sweeping up after Sherpherd and the other idiots. Be patient and grow up, we haven’t been much cop for years now so the best players are unlikely to sign for us. Finding the right players, with the right futures at the right price and wages will take time.

  • 38 nightfall // May 23, 2008 at 19:45

    my choices:
    cuellar
    veloso
    arshavin
    gomis

NO to arda..too weak and too slow for EPL

  • 39 Toon1978 // May 23, 2008 at 19:46

Ok Toon Steve you are entitled to your opinion and so am i. That is what i think and i dont give a monkeys if you or anyody else dissagrees with me to be honest. I want to see top football at NUFC and why not. I have had a season ticket for 15 years my first season ticket bought for me by my parents so i think i can moan all i want with the money i have spent. If you are happy to see mediocre football at NUFC then that is your opinion and it has nothing to do with me. You say you hope i dont renew haha WHAT DIFERENCE DOES IT MAKE TO YOU? I have been paitent for years god knows how much i have spent supporting NUFC and i am no “johnny come lately” IF i had only bought a season ticket LAST YEAR then you point would be valid. I LOVE NUFC and have cried at F.A. cup finals at WEMBLEY twice and i have bitten my nails down to the core at European games ALKMAAR being the last place i went. SO I THINK THE CLUB WOULD E HAPPY WITH ME AS A SUPPORTER.

  • 40 Obafan // May 23, 2008 at 19:47

I think they (Wise, KK, Jimenez, …) are working very hard to get the players they need. It indeed is not fair to say that Ashley does not want to splash the cash; ffs he cleared our depts and I think that is a very good thing and if he wasn’t intedned to do great things at NEwcastle then he would never have done that.

2 weeks ago the team had to play our last game at Everton.
Now we are all following the actions that could possible happen during the transfer window. This is more than normal I also search for things that can/might happen. But do lots of you here really think that the deals can fly around after just 2 weeks time, even the window is not open for another month yet. Plus the fact that most of the players are concentrating on the Euro’s and they do the right with that! It is an opportunity for them to show what they can do and they wall want to win that trophee, so they will be focussed on one thing. After the Euros they all have plenty of time to get a good deal at a better club or a club they really want to play for!
Modric has got his deal and I think he will be one of the few to get a deal before the start of the Euros.

So for now BE PATIENT!!! We defo will sign good players, who can upgrade our level and Ashley will support those transfers with his money.

  • 41 Toon1978 // May 23, 2008 at 19:55

Obafan a good sensible post mate i see what you are saying but i cant help but get impatient thats how i am IMPATENT lol. Wor lass keeps telling me to slow down and chill out.

  • 42 Obafan // May 23, 2008 at 20:04

Toon1978 - I know what you mean about being impatient. I would rather have read that we already had Arshavin, Turan, Veloso and Gomis tied up for next year. But it is not like that and that is not a shame at this time I think.

In the Modric deal we were unlucky, but I’m sure the board will learn from the mistake they made there. Ashley will not kick his head at the same rock again ;-) . So be confident; quality will be brought in and I think and that will be a step forward (compared with the Shephard days) at the right prices and wages.

  • 43 Sun'lun's Burnin' // May 23, 2008 at 20:13

This is gonna sound daft but ive just been playing online poker and some turk came in the room and so i asked him about Arda and what was being said in the turkish press about a move and he said that all th papers are saying that he will be moving to the premier league and the only team who have been mentioned are newcastle. So for all of you that are sweet on this kid its good news i suppose.

  • 44 rob1892 // May 23, 2008 at 20:19

am i right in sayin the only definate signing so far for anyone is modric to spurs…if so then whats the worry there seems to be more than us still waiting to show our hand…if im wrong then my apologies but the only other one i can think of is nasri to arsenal but i dont think thats been sealed yet

  • 45 Andy1 // May 23, 2008 at 20:45

    Bosingwa to Chelsea
    Degen to Liverpool

Other than that, can’t think of anyy transfers. Nothing much happens this early normally.

  • 46 Marat18 // May 23, 2008 at 20:45

    Good post Obafan,

but everybody knows even if we doubt Newcastle and Mike Ashley ambitions, that’s only because we cannot live without this team.

I just hope that in august we will have Gomez, Arshavin, Veloso, Turan, Cuellar, Riise.

And who says that Turan is slow? Never seen him plays, tho.

  • 47 Marat18 // May 23, 2008 at 20:49

Samir Nasri to Arsenal. Hatem Ben Arfa most probably as well.

  • 48 Sun'lun's Burnin' // May 23, 2008 at 20:54

Riise?? you gotta be kiddin!!he is dreadful, one of my mates is a scouse fan and so we go watch em at pub a fair bit and i can honestly say ive never seen any PL player give the ball away as much. only looks alright in a decent side. we wud be singin ‘are you boumsong in disguise!’ after 30mins from him.

And as for Cuellar i wouldnt ever trust a player that looks good in scotland ever again. barry fergusson and J A Boumsong have proved they cannot cut it.

  • 49 rob1892 // May 23, 2008 at 20:56

so maybe 4 have been done so far..if each club only buys 3 players each that still leaves 56 transfers to happen lol…so im off to put my feet up and chill out rather than give myself a heart attack worrying

  • 50 Tom_Toon // May 23, 2008 at 21:06

Marat - You rate Riise but not Asatiani?

  • 51 Marat18 // May 23, 2008 at 21:26

    Sun’lun’s Burnin’
i just mentioned the players we were linked with. Cuellar is the only DC among them :) (never heard about Dunne for few weeks).

    as for Riise,
remember, we have Enrique in the team, and he has to play to develop, so Riise is a quality LB for cover (and LM as well).

    Tom Toon,
yes, i do rate Riise (haven’t seen much of Liverpool in past two years).
    1) we need cover for Enrique
    2) he can play LM also
    3) can take free-kicks - this season we were weak from set pieces.

Asatiani - he cannot break into Lokomotiv Moscow squad in Russian PL, how can he be EPL quality?

  • 52 Nobby's Dad // May 23, 2008 at 21:26

”You seem not to realise that 99.9% of players contracts end on June 31st.”

What are you on about?? YOU seem not to realise that if this was the case 99.9% of moves would be on a Bosman and the players involved would have been able to negotiate deals since 1 Jan 08!!

  • 60 Oba // May 24, 2008 at 0:46

People saying, ‘get players tied up before the Euro’s’. Why?

What happens if we sign some random Turkish international before the tournament, and then he goes and gets injured.

Something that deep down inside me hopes happens to Modric. That will be a right kick in the teeth for Spurs.

Okay, their price may increase if they perform well, but who cares. We should be able to sign someone if we really want him, and have a genuine interest, no matter the cost.

  • 61 Leo // May 24, 2008 at 0:48

i think the fact that we signed no one for the first team in january has really got to our heads a bit, we need players in because our minds tell us that we are due imput from players coming in…

we have to wait im afraid

  • 62 Hadji // May 24, 2008 at 1:20

We were never really after him,we only showed interest and that was it.Vokes made a excellent move by joining them cause he knew that he would have been 4th choice here,

  • 63 Pav // May 24, 2008 at 4:27

Boys he will be fourth choice at the Wolves. We have the best young English Striking Prospect Sylvian Ebanks Blake (Top Scorer in The Championship) Andy Keogh (Best Irish Youngster) We alredy have Eastwood Bothroyd and Elliot(Remember that Twat?) on the transfer list. And We have bid for Lafferty From Burnley. If Vokes is comin to us to play football it wont happen. Sad day when he would rather sit on our bench than yours. But then again at least we won a trophy in the last 50 years maybe he knows who the bigger club is. Lol. Then again we have Mad Thick Mick McCarthy in charge so…. Hey at least your manager would LOVE IT when/If you win
rather than the c*nt we have. Were Bloody Alful every week.. Hope you do well next season. You deserve it.
