Croatia star Ivica Olic could be moving to the Premier League this summer, and Newcastle are one of the clubs said to be interested.

Ivica Olic - 28 year old Croatia striker
The agent of Hamburg’s Croatian international striker Ivica Olic, has told Setanta Sports that the player has not been approached by Portsmouth, but a move to Newcastle in the summer has not been ruled out.
The Bundesliga star is a big talent, and certainly enhanced his reputation during the Euro qualifiers when Croatia beat England both home and away.
Portsmouth and Newcastle are both rumored to be interested in Olic.
The Croation’s agent, Gordon Stipic , was asked if he has had any contact with those two clubs:
“I have not spoken directly with Portsmouth, but Newcastle…â€
“I definitely think he will be leaving this summer.”
“We will wait for the end of Euro 2008 to take a decision. England is an option for him, obviously.â€
“We have contacts in England and in Spain as well, but I cannot say much at this stage.”
The 28-year-old has scored 21 goals for Hamburg in 48 appearances for the club and he has been a goal-scorer all his career, and scored in Croatia’s 3-2 win against England last November.
The transfer fee is said to be around £4M, and that looks a good deal to us, if it’s true.
Here is Ivica’s playing record so far.
Season Club Games Goals 1996–1998 Marsonia 42 17 1998–1999 Hertha Berlin 2 0 1999–2001 Marsonia 42 21 2001–2002 NK Zagreb 28 21 2002–2003 Dinamo Zagreb 27 16 2003–2007 CSKA Moscow 78 35 2007– Hamburger SV 48 21 2002– Croatia 52 9
In 267 first class club games Olic has scored 135 goals - not too bad, one goal every two games.
He looks a good player to us and would be a good acquisition, if we can get him.
Comments welcome.

Any new news on the Turan/Veloso/Gomez front?
3 seetow // May 24, 2008 at 10:12
hmm is he strong enough for this league? at this age, he’s not getting any younger. anyone remember shevchenko? one of the world’s best strikers but turned out to be a flop when he moved to premier league at 29..
4 figsdad // May 24, 2008 at 10:15
load of crap dont believe it..
let him go to portmouth or had spurs been in for him as well..
5 euanpolo // May 24, 2008 at 10:20
He looks like he might be quite good, and £4m isn’t exaactly going to burn a massive whole in Mike Ashley’s pocket. Although I’d prefer Arda Turan/Gomez/Veloso/Moutinho. But overall I’d like a signing before Euro 08, so if we signed him now it would be okay. I think he is probably strong enough for the premier league, the bundesliga is slightly more physical than la liga and serie a. Anyway a signing is a signing.
6 MarK // May 24, 2008 at 10:29
not many player are going to sign for a team before the euros. their agents wont allow it..
7 figsdad // May 24, 2008 at 10:30
well he’s got to better than shola and smith or even viduka so in a way good cover for them all..
Owen and Olic
how tall is he….?
8 Alex // May 24, 2008 at 10:32
Its not to be belived, he is the same age and in the same price class as Dunne and apparently Wise and co think he is too old .
9 Sun'lun's Burnin' // May 24, 2008 at 10:33

12 The Entertainers // May 24, 2008 at 10:43
Hang on i thought 28 was too old for this Newcastle regime? If Dunne is too old then surely this fellow is. I firmly believe we need a presence up front and only Gomez or Gomis would done. Or even Crouch for that matter, did’nt he and Owen link up well for England a while back.
13 Newcastle United. // May 24, 2008 at 11:04
He’s just over 6 foot.
14 Marat18 // May 24, 2008 at 11:10
although his goal scoring ratio is decent in his CSKA days, as far as I remember he was absolutely mediocre in Russia. Lots of goals were scored against shit opposition.
Any news on Gomez?
Hope Arda, Gomez and Veloso will have a crap Euro campaign, so we can get them.
And as it usually is, EURO-stars are crap in club season and those who were stars in club fail in Euro or world cup campaigns.

no i dont watch ressie games i have better things to do but this guy looks VERY average and isnt going to get any better at 28 and therefore i would rather give a young GEORDIE lad that we already have a chance cos he wont do any worse. plus we dont have to dole out 4-5million on carroll cos hes already ours MARK
21 D B F // May 24, 2008 at 11:39
WHY WUD U RATHER GIV CARROLL A CHANCE JUST COS HES A GEORDIE, LOOK WHER THTS GOT US IN THE PAST, SHOLA CHOPRA RING ANY BELLS,

Leo, don’t you have a dikshunary in your house.
It means boredom through lack of excitement.
Until some thing interesting happens on the transfer front I will continue to use it on threads like this.
It is pronounced On- we if you want to impress down the Bigg Market.
23 Bill F // May 24, 2008 at 11:54
DBF how about that they are two different players, you cannot say one will be cr*p because the other was. Even if he does turn out to be.
24 Owen_10 // May 24, 2008 at 11:54
he seems a decent player, but isn’t he more of a second striker or left winger than an out and out striker, so not really what we need
25 Sun'lun's Burnin' // May 24, 2008 at 11:58

translate anyone?

Why buy a 28 year old striker if you’re having a hard time with a 29 year old defender?
With Owen, Martins, Viduka and Carrol, surely we’d be after a younger target man. I think this is a very tenuous story, bordering on complete ballacks! (see what I did there)
28 Hadrian // May 24, 2008 at 12:39
spurs are in for arda with a firm bid i think , and as far as i know, we hevent put one in .
29 toonoholic // May 24, 2008 at 13:14

Testing the water with an offer to sell Martins?
Looks like the bean counters are taking over, the new costcutting management are beginning to institute a system which incorporates a salary cap and other moneysaving policies.
Both Owen(a salary cut or hit the road) and Martins (eighty grand ,too high) are under threat.
I expect other high salaried players to be moved,
Duff being rumored for a move.
It appears none of this sits well with KK, unfortunately it appears he does`nt have a lot of say in the matter, reading between the lines he has had players foisted on him he has little interest in.
There seems to be a lack of cohesion between the various levels of management, each pursuing their own particular interest.
One wonders if internal strife had a role in Morts exit?
Afraid things are back to normal on Tyneside, with the long suffering fans desperate for stability, a few big names brought in, some decent football with a possible top six finish, not an over reach by any means, especially with the money in the EPL to-day.
What are they going to get, more of the same dross they experienced last season, plus KK walking out, because of the bulls**t.
Wise up management, the market place decides wage and transfer levels, managers build teams,
bean counters should only have a restricted role
to play.

I rate Olic, he was one of the player i earmakred that i wanted here, rather havw him on the bench than smith.
39 Spyro // May 24, 2008 at 21:03
whats all this talk of Turan? How does everyone know we are even going for him? Some of you on here make me laugh. When papers slate us you are the first to say “oh its just silly southern press”, yet as soon as they claim we are in for a decent player its “it must be true” and straight away you start pasting the player in to your fantasy football squads as if he is expected to sign. Seriously it is utterly ridiculous.
I do not care if we miss out on Turan (If we are indeed after him). He is a good player but like i have said on many occassions. Good midfielders are the easiest to come by at this present time.
40 nightfall // May 24, 2008 at 21:24
olic? wtf?
the best AM who we can get is arshavin! no olic (watched him play…way better players on the market), no arda (too weak and too slow for EPL - overrated), so wise, now would be the time for you to do sth
41 daiv // May 24, 2008 at 21:57
What does Wise do? It seems he lives in the south, winds KK up and does nothing else. He is supposed to be our buying supremo but buys nobody. Not a bad job if you can get it.
42 craig chisholm // May 25, 2008 at 5:19
ed, there is no link here at all, even the bloks agent says he has had no contact form us!! where is the link. besides, i am arsed off, we want to sell a 23 yr old martins for 13 million and bring in a 28 yr old for 4 million - what a great idea!!
