Surprising News On Keegan Future

May 25th, 2008 · 53 Comments

Sueprising and hard to believe news in the Sunday Sun this morning - news must be terribly slow today.

Kevin Keegan - surprising news today

The Sunday Sun, the local Newcastle Sunday paper, is reporting that Newcastle are again considering replacing Kevin Keegan with top Spanish coach Marcelino, according to sources in Spain.

There was news about Marcelino in March, but that died down once Kevin righted the ship at Newcastle, but we do remember that Kevin went to talk to Chairman Chris Mort about the rumor.

We simply don’t believe this, and we are a little surprised that the Sunday Sun, of all papers, would put this news story out. Are they living on a different planet?

Newcastle are reported to be one of a few clubs to have contacted Marcelino’s agents this week following his resignation as the Racing Santander coach.

And the Sunday Sun understands that United have been in regular communication with the 42-year-old’s representatives via a member of their new scouting network in Spain.

Marcelino — whose full name Marcelino Garcia Toral — did well last year in getting Racing Santander to 6th place in his first season at the club.

But then he walked out on Wednesday, insisting Racing do not have the resources to fulfil his managerial ambitions.

We are surprised this story has even seen the light of day, but we for one just don’t believe it, and don’t think it does our club any favors at all.

Comments welcome.

I read this article this morning in the Sunday Sun i really hope this is not true, if it is true then i would totally turn against Ashley not that i am all for him anyway but its the papers that are full of gloom about NUFC.

  • 2 seetow // May 25, 2008 at 14:12

another piece of bullshit from the sun. keegan is our man and my, is he king kee (kinky)!

  • 3 Bobby Choung // May 25, 2008 at 14:12

i dont see why we need some foreign manager … KK has done more than enough for his club to survive. Now we just need him to do more than that in the next season :P

  • 4 figsdad // May 25, 2008 at 14:14

dont listen to the papers there just putting 2 and 2 together….

  • 5 craig f // May 25, 2008 at 14:17

I just wish we could get through 1 day without a story dragging the club down. Whether it be about us offering Martins around clubs ( i will single handledly assasinate MA if this is true ) or replacing our manager with some ‘Spic.

  • 6 Toon_Ksk // May 25, 2008 at 14:20

    HAHAHA~ That’s funny…

    The Sun huh?

I’m only interested in Page 3…

  • 7 Eric // May 25, 2008 at 14:20

This bullshite and the story about Vargas is by Neil Farrington. Who is this Sunday Sun hack? Have we now the local press as well as the London rags spreading the muck? Come clean Farrington - what is this manure you are spreading?

  • 8 Midjew // May 25, 2008 at 14:24

I don’t think this is true.

    however…

IF it is, well i just hope its gets done quickly, the only thing i HATE is hanging around and loosing out on trasnfers etc etc.

i think that Marcelino will have more contacts in the right places and has been realy invloved in football last few years.

So whoever it is GET THEM IN and start preparing for an exciting season next year

  • 9 MarK // May 25, 2008 at 14:26

lets first work extremely hard to get keegan back into management..now that hes back, lets replace him with a spanish fella….cant believe people buy into this crap

  • 10 Martins // May 25, 2008 at 14:28

Sunday Sun has nothing to do with the Sun, and is a much more reliable source. In fact the Sunday Sun has relations with the Chronicle.

  • 11 toon1978 // May 25, 2008 at 14:29

Mark you are right, KK saves us from Relegation and according to the Sundaysun we want rid of him. If M.Ashley can use and abuse ppl like this then we do not want the likes of that trash leading our club, IF the paper is correct which is hard to believe.

  • 12 m. // May 25, 2008 at 14:32

we’ll be walking on a keegan wonderland for some years! WOR KEV!

  • 13 Ben // May 25, 2008 at 14:32

The only way this can be true is if KK has decided that this job is either too tough for him, or not what he was promised.

  • 14 toon1978 // May 25, 2008 at 14:33

    Probably the latter Ben

  • 15 m. // May 25, 2008 at 14:36

how is the weather in newcastle right now? i’m out of the toon for 3 years, here in brazil is being bloody cold.

  • 16 TomPoon // May 25, 2008 at 14:36

Come on MA, prove all the souther doubters wrong and splash the cash

  • 17 keeganpleasecomeback // May 25, 2008 at 14:38

i think we had enogh Marcelinhos at this club - one is enough - remember him

  • 18 toon1978 // May 25, 2008 at 14:41

M.Ashley will probably make a bigger splash in Tynemouth swimming baths then what he will in the Transfer winow lol.

  • 19 Chris F // May 25, 2008 at 14:44

lol the Sunday Sun is a reliable source?

do me a favour, they’re WORSE than the chronicle for making up crap stories just to flog more copies of their rag.

i wouldn’t even wipe my backside with it.

  • 21 Davy C // May 25, 2008 at 14:50

I’m really fed up already with the newspapers and it’s still only May!!

I don’t by these glorified toilet papers that aren’t even good enough to be fish and chips wrappers anymore!

I’ll start to take notice when we actually sign someone, if Ashley leaves or Keegan gets sacked etc etc.

Pillocks like Neil Farrington in the Sunday Sun are just doom mongerers who will always try and stir the proverbial up so that people will buy the newspapers. They can’t compete with 24/7 news or Sky sports anymore and quite simply aren’t current. They still have to attract mugs to buy the rags so turn to speculation and rumour instead.

I hate this time of year!!

I’m now off to shut myself off in a cupboard under the stairs until 16th August!!

  • 22 Ashton // May 25, 2008 at 15:12

I think Marcelino will sign for Valencia

  • 23 RocKKy // May 25, 2008 at 15:16

Remember that saying “no news is good news” doesn’t apply to newspapers. They have to fill column inches with something and if they haven’t got anything real to report it seems these days that conjecture and downright fabrication will do just as well.

First thing I look for in any of these articles is any sort of quote directly from someone believable. If there isn’t one there then the chances are high that someone is talking rubbish.

  • 24 Tom_Toon // May 25, 2008 at 15:16

Emery has already signed for Valencia.

  • 25 Gooderz // May 25, 2008 at 15:28

It would be wonderful if we could bring him in as Kev’s assistant so Marcelino can learn the ins and outs of the English game over the course of the next year or two. The experience alone would be invaluable and it’s not like he’d be losing out financially.

However it’s unlikely if another club comes in offering what he wants in a managerial role.

  • 26 ToonKing // May 25, 2008 at 15:55

    these papers are funny.

  • 27 scott9 // May 25, 2008 at 15:59

pethetic the papaers dont hav F*CK ALL to right so they think o lets put in some S*IT about newcastle like we always do

  • 28 ronaldeano // May 25, 2008 at 16:24

People who belive papers are bigger mugs than the mongs who write them.

  • 29 Reformed_Mumbler // May 25, 2008 at 16:32

The Sunday Sun, as noted in the article, is a local weekend (surprisingly it comes out on Sundays…) rag, well noted for running non-stories and hawking any old crap to shift copies. If you get the opportunity to read it then do. The reg’ news and features are as bad, if not worse, than the sports content. Even Farrington’s column (if he still writes for it) is crap layered with misinformed ramblings and he’s the best of the bunch.

If there is any basis in truth to this story, I’d suggest it would be contingency planning in case KK throws a strop and walks out (again).

None’s the matter, keep speculating and gobbling up the bullshit, scat munchers.

  • 30 Slam Dunc // May 25, 2008 at 16:47

If you look right at the bottom here:
    http://www.trophy4toon.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=181.0

you’ll see Mike Bolam from NUFC.COM interview with the Journal. He’s saying the local press are now marginalised and all Newcastle stories are leaked from the Newcastle’s London office to the London press.

So if it’s in the Sunday Sun ignore it. If it’s in the London Evening Standard then get worried.

Tho other point he makes is right at the end is questioning are these stories leaks or plants ??

  • 31 daiv // May 25, 2008 at 16:51

MA will not splash the cash and KK has been employed on false pretences. This story may be true because KK will not hand around if MA does not back him. MA is the tightest owner in the Prem. We are like Tottenham used to be…linked to loads of top players but signing none just to keep the fans happy. But that kind of deceit only lasts so long and KK will not put up with it.

  • 32 Leo // May 25, 2008 at 17:04

well avram grant got sacked after getting into the champs league final… so anything can happen…

i would be unhappy if keegan wasnt our manager next year, it might just be contingency planning though.

  • 33 Paul // May 25, 2008 at 17:06

Thankfully, we all seem to be of the same mind on this “rumor” — also known as “BS”. Just remember where it comes from.
As Mark Twain said, and I paraphrase,
‘people who don’t read the newspapers are uninformed and those that do are misinformed’.

  • 34 Spyro // May 25, 2008 at 17:08

Daiv you believe everything you read from these papers

  • 35 angryman the angry fan // May 25, 2008 at 17:28

    I told you so!!
Marcelino in hotseat by the 20 august!!
leaves him 2 weeks to identify and sign several players…………!!
I DID WARN YOU LOT OF THIS!!!!!!

  • 36 daiv // May 25, 2008 at 17:50

    Spyro,
I don’t believe everything I read but some people on this blog seem to think that every negative story is made up. Some are and some aren’t… but the vibes about KK going and MA selling are not good. This MA selling story has been running for too long for all the paers to make it up.

  • 37 daiv // May 25, 2008 at 18:03

    Spyro,
I think MA will sell when he gets the chance to make a profit. Why? Bottom line because he is a businessman who has no emotional interest in NUFC. Why should he be any different to previous greedy owners who were at least Geordies and did support the Toon.
MA has sunk £250M into NUFC of his own money. He is no Abramovitch and his funds willl be running out. Hes had a bad run of business results and lost loads so he probably does not have much left. Thats why he does not pay reasonable players like Oba (he is not a world beater) £90K a week and I can understand that. I want MA to go asap but sell to some really rich person. MA is not rich enough and wants a return as a businessman on his £250M. He won’t get it paying £100K a week wages. He’ll be potless in couple of years. KK only cares about the team and does not want to hear about financial restraint. He was obviously promised loads of money to return and that has not happpened as yet. He will walk if it does not happen and this friction between KK and MA may explain the press stories. Thats my take on it. Hopefully I’m wrong and KK stays. I do not trust MA.

  • 38 iain // May 25, 2008 at 18:12

as i understand it marcelino is part of a managerment team owned/run by a 3rd party ala msi and tevez.

im guessing its just them using our previous possible contact or links to people like jiminez to get the name of there guy out there. imo marcelino wouldnt come here his demands include totall autonomy over transfers etc and this was why he turned down the valencia job and has left racing.

  • 39 Slam Dunc // May 25, 2008 at 18:29

and I had to laugh at the comment in the Sunday Sun article about the link between Newcastle and Marcelino:

“the link being scout Pablo Longoria thought to be just 21 is now talent spotting in Europe for Newcastle. The young Spaniard has no professional background in football, with his apparently encyclopaedic knowledge of players across the Continent said to be gained from the Internet.”

I think there is probably a few on this Blog therefore better qualified to scout for Newcastle lol

the sunday sun is different to the sun

    totally different publication

  • 41 Mad_Magpie // May 25, 2008 at 19:01

From following Spanish football this guy seems like a really talented coach, and I would not complain if he was appointed. However, Keegan was not just a panic appointment. He is here for a reason and I would love for him to succeed but if he fails, Marcelino is the kind of coach we would need to come in instead, young, ambitious and hungry for success. Spain is the place to go for coaches nowadays, with Benitez succeeding (in Europe anyway) with Liverpool and Ramos making his mark at Spurs.

    Where you surprised?

  • 43 bailey // May 25, 2008 at 19:40

I hope people realise that Neil Farrington of the Sunday Sun is born and bred in Sunderland . It has always peed me right off that he is allowed to spout forth on matters relating to NUFC and in my opinion gloats at anything detrimental about us. He obviously cannot be unbiased or objective without a smirk.

  • 44 micepie // May 25, 2008 at 19:59

Good grief- could there be any more muddy rumours dug up every day?!

Like Michael Owen did when there so many stories about him wanting to leave last season just ignoring them all. I suspect that KK and most of the players just go on their summer holidays and let the press make up whatever they want, knowing that many “journalists” are a bunch of idiots anyway (or their bosses are, more likely).

You’d think that any club’s summer could be quite straightorward really. The chairman and boards meets with the manager in May, makes sure everyting is okay - that he’s happy, and what his plans/ambition are, then the manger meets the entire squad on a one-by-one basis (even the youngsters), finds out who is happy at the club, impress his ambitions to them and then if any trimming is necessary he does it. Everyone takes a break in the sunshine with friends and family whilst the board and manager work on recruitments. Simple.
Why should the summer be so much turmoil?!

if it’s true..noone will ever join us…who would have faith in our club if there are big changes every fu*ing month…

  • 46 Joe Aussie // May 26, 2008 at 0:34

RoKKy has mentioned the saying “No news is good news”.This could well be the the case regarding information coming directly from the club.Everyone is running round like headless chickens speculating and getting negative. Do you think that KK and his team are sitting on thier arses watching the world go by!When they make some signings they will let us know and we all may br pleasantly surprised.

  • 47 Toon Down Under // May 26, 2008 at 8:43

Over the past two days, there has been heaps of made up media, by the media, for the media. These media groups need to have look at themselves, because there is more crap being written here than a hollywood rumours magazine!

  • 48 Glenn_United // May 26, 2008 at 12:06

ASHLEY ASHLEY ASHLEY, JUST GET BEHIND THE MANAGER THAT YOU SELECTED WHICH IS KEVIN KEEGAN!!!! BACK HIM WITH THE FUNDS HE NEEDS, NOT THE FUNDS YOU THINK WILL BE ENOUGH, BUT WITH AS MUCH MONEY NEEDED FOR THE TYPES OF PLAYERS WE DESPERATELY NEED!!!!!!!!

MONEY MONEY MONEY FOR KEEGAN TO BUY A SQUAD OF PLAYERS CAPABLE OF HITTING 4TH AND BEYOND!!!!

  • 49 Punk Skunk // May 26, 2008 at 12:40

    Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!..

  • 50 piman // May 26, 2008 at 13:17

I find it surprising that Ashley and his guru’s don’t get some positive stories into the media to fend off all this negative crap! I bet he wouldn’t allow his businesses to be raked by the press without doing something about it.

The trouble is the loyal fans have been pummeled by bad news, poor results and without seeing light at the end of the tunnel. King Kev has done a great job and I feel sure he will be able to do a lot better with a few good signings.

    Come on the toon!

  • 51 Micky Toon // May 27, 2008 at 10:46

Nice to everyone turning on MA when he has put the club in an excellent position. You lot just have no idea, do you? You want instant sucess. Fine, have instant success, do a Leeds and then bugger off when the real supporters are still following a 2nd tier team.
MA has put some excellent foundations down for the rest of his staff to build on.
You all want loyalty from everyone from the very top to the very bottom, yet you show no loyalty to anyone in the club. So what if MA sells for a profit. The only people who could afford the club are the mega rich. Do you think they would not invest also?
As for MA being skint, didn’t he recently win £1.3m in a casino? Doesn’t sound like someone who is looking after his money if he can afford to bet with money that would give him that sort of return.
I’d love to know just what KK has done to recieve so much love and blind faith. He is not a top manager, if Morinhio wanted to join us, would anyone really prefer Keegan over him? I think not. If you do then you really don’t know anything about football and don’t have any ambition at all.
I’ve said it time and time again, I will back NUFC 100%. It does not mean I will support every staff member of NUFC 100%. If KK goes and we get a top manager in, then so be it. At least we will actually win something instead of just being mid table losers.

  • 52 Leo // May 27, 2008 at 10:56

micky toon for someone who condemns people who dont trust ashley and his cronies you do talk a load of tripe.

1.3mil for a billionaire is nothing.
also ever thought of the possibility of him getting rid of the debt for his own benefit not the clubs.

also you bang on about how people should support our club from the people working in the bars to the cronies sorting out the club from the top. and then you talk about how you believe that everyone would prefer mourinho than kk.
