Newcastle Show Interest In Juan Vargas

May 25th, 2008 · 64 Comments

News today that Newcastle United are about to join the race for left-sided Peru star Juan Manuel Vargas, who currently plays for Catania in the Italian Serie A league.

juan-manuel-vargas.jpg

Juan Vargas - 24 year old Peruvian International

The 24-year-old is said to be also interesting both Inter Milan and Fiorentina, as well as clubs in Spain, with a move away from Sicily almost certain to take place in the summer.

Vargas’ versatility - he can play full-back or in midfield - will be an appealing factor to Kevin Keegan. But again we may not be too well placed for the player, since we can offer no European Football next year.

The Lima-born Juan has played 65 times for Catania and scored 7 goals since 2006, and has so far played 15 times for Peru scoring 2 goals.

If he’s anything like another Peruvian we know about he’ll do just great and no doubt Kevin will be calling Nobby Solano, to get hisviews on the player.

Vargas is valued at around £6M by his club.

Comments welcome.

  • 3 Tom_Toon // May 25, 2008 at 14:26

Well, he is off to Real Madrid.

Very similar to the Rise 2 seasons ago, a good player.

  • 4 TomPoon // May 25, 2008 at 14:33

Sounds like a good buy although I have never seen him play.

Would rather have Wayne Bridge. Could be available with all the uproar ar Chelski

  • 5 m. // May 25, 2008 at 14:34

he played like a world-beater against ac milan in the coppa italia. looks like to be a great player, with pace, like beye.

off: f**k, milner and the kids’ hair look just like mine… i’ll shave it up

  • 6 NUFCFAN // May 25, 2008 at 14:39

do like the sound of this guy.

Tom Toon - do we really have no chance? even if he spoke to wor Nobby!

  • 7 Tom_Toon // May 25, 2008 at 14:42

The lure of the prem is great, no matter what team, but the latest i heard was that he is on the verge of joining Real Madrid.

  • 8 toon1978 // May 25, 2008 at 14:44

More crap just another name thrown into the ring. I will believe when i see who ever it may be in a press conference with KK and CASHLEY sitting either side of their new signing.

  • 9 seetow // May 25, 2008 at 14:47

i like this guy. watched the match between catania and ac milan.. he was tremendous! like twice the player of the bernard of old if any of you still remember him and not the ugly crap who was permanently injured a few seasons back..

  • 10 nate dawg // May 25, 2008 at 15:35

remember bernard at his prime he was decent, and we aint filled the left back position since he went, dont no why he ever went . rangers werent it?

  • 11 seetow // May 25, 2008 at 15:51

went to southampton first i think for 400k before being released to join rangers. after he got released from rangers and we took him back, he was utter shite.

  • 12 ToonKing // May 25, 2008 at 16:00

yeah, i heard that he’s off toe Madrid, plus i don’t think the Premiership interests him to much cause Pompey were after him before he went to Italy and he chose Catania over them.

a great player none the less, no pain in trying.

  • 13 Geordie Gerrard7 // May 25, 2008 at 16:06

best left back in the world

Quaresma however has already rejected a move to Munich, joking “In Germany, it always seems very cold!”

  • 22 richie // May 25, 2008 at 19:23

like everyone on the blog, iv been increasingly frustrated about transfer targets etc and how much wel have and who we can get

it has just occured to me that a route we could take is to buy relatively cheap young players

    eg:

    eagles 3 mill?
    scannell 4 mill?
    garven 4 mill?
    shane long 2.5 mill?
    johny evans 4.5mill?
    song 4 mill?
    kilgallon 3.5 mill?

    total= 25.5 million total expenditure

  • 23 richie // May 25, 2008 at 19:26

tom toon spyro etc , id b interested to see wat u thought on this…

  • 24 cooldj // May 25, 2008 at 19:52

imo we’d still be lacking of actual quality in CM and of decent CF cover not to mention our defence where we’re short at CB LB and RB. these players could be very good but they aren’t ready plus i think there are better out there than eagles, garven, kilgallon ect.

  • 25 BigAlsbike // May 25, 2008 at 19:55

Walter smutt does not look too comfortable when asked about a possible bid coming in for Carlos Cuellar.
Dont want him any way i could do well in jock land.
    Splash the cash ash

  • 26 richie // May 25, 2008 at 20:16

cooldj- i see where ur coming from, perhaps the players we already have viduka owen butt etc could help the likes of eagles get to the next level, iv said many times on this blog garven is destined for the top in centre mid, at this stage id settle for this cheap young route ,,,,the more i think about it , i doubt wel even get turan / dunne etc altho id like t b proved wrong

  • 27 Geordie Gerrard7 // May 25, 2008 at 20:25

that list of players richie is disgusting

  • 28 Geordie Gerrard7 // May 25, 2008 at 20:25

    anything on turan fellas?

  • 29 richie // May 25, 2008 at 20:32

haha geordie g well it jus shows how much faith i have of us making big signings, i hope im wrong

  • 30 Oba // May 25, 2008 at 20:33

    Yes, got something on Turan that I can translate;

    Arda’nın rotası Everton
    22 Mayıs 2008

İngiliz kulübü, G.Saray’ın yıldızı için 10 milyon sterlini gözden çıkardı.

Milli futbolcuyu renklerine bağlamaya kararlı olan Evertonlılar önümüzdeki günlerde sarı kırmızılılarla temasa geçecek. Tarafların anlaşmaya varması halinde bu transferin 10 gün içinde sonuçlanacağı belirtildi.

GALATASARAY’ın ve A Milli Takım’ın genç yıldızı Arda Turan, İngiliz kulüplerini peşinden koşturuyor.

EÄŸer anlaÅŸma saÄŸlanırsa, Arda’nın Everton’a transferi 10 gün içerisinde sonuçlanabilir.”

    Which in English approximately means;

    Arda on course for Everton

    22 Mayıs 2008

English club prepared to spend £10m on Galatasaray star

National team player wants to give up the red and yellow (GS strip) and wear Everton’s colours. If all sides agree the transfer will; be concluded in 10 days.

Engliosh clubs are chasing GS star Arda.

Arda who played such a big role in winning the (Turkish) championship for the red and yellows is being followedf closely by Newcastle and now Everton.

According to the English press Newcastle have offered £11m and GS club chairman Adnan polat has announced ‘If the conditions are right and the player agrees we can sell. We’re not in the slave trade”

On the back of this announcement it has been learned that English team Everton have also jumped in offering £10m (around 24 million Turkish lira)

    He wants to earn money

The player’s agent Ahmet Bulut said “Arda’s name has been linked with Newcastle
Utd but there’s only one club showing strong interest and that’s Everton. The English club’s officials want to buy Arda for £10m.

Claiming that Arda wants very much to play in England Bulut said “Arda wants to develop his career at a good club in Europe. Galatasaray wants money to develop their infrastructure and are prepared to sell this player who they have nurtured up to international level. It’s thanks to GS that he’s got this far.”

“Officials from everton and GS will meet over the next few days to begin talks. I don’t see any problem in this going ahead. If they agree he’ll be an Everton player in 10 days.

Oh ffs. Missed out on yet another player.

    Arda’s goal against Urugiay.

spot Emre’s congratulation - may be he said to Arda: “Next season mate we gonna get crowd at SJP going!”

  • 41 Frankieboy // May 25, 2008 at 20:54

Would have to pay big bucks to land Thuram and that goes against recent policies and direction. Would be fantastic for Taylor and Enrique as regards progress. Siad it before that “killer” Kilcline ( not quite in same league as Thuran) done similar job in KK’s first stint. A rock in defence and thats what we need now.

  • 42 Geordie Gerrard7 // May 25, 2008 at 20:57

he is a free transfer and wages are about 60k a week mate

  • 43 toon1978 // May 25, 2008 at 21:00

Marat18 i see what you mean about Emre and Arda but i think you are clutching at straws lol i hope them smiles by Emre are smiles of satisfaction that he will be playing with this kid next season at Nufc.

  • 44 Frankieboy // May 25, 2008 at 21:03

Would they be prepared to pay 60k though, even without paying a fee. Would like to think so cos would be good business and MA is no mug as regards that. Speculate to accumulate n all that . If they were to get him then his name would attract more signings in my book. He is also religious and regularly reads the big book whereas someone else we know keeps geeting the book thrown at him.
    One out one in.

turan took his goal well. anyone see how emre played?

  • 59 GSfan // May 26, 2008 at 0:00

lol our defense and keeper was pathetic throughout the match. Good thing those are just our subs though. The main purpose of the match was to see who we had to keep before crossing 4 more names off the list as wanted by UEFA until the 28th of May.

Oh by the way here’s the interview: http://www.milliyet.com.tr/default.aspx?aType=HaberDetay&Kategori=spor&ArticleID=758657&Date=24.05.2008

I had thought about posting it here before but I saw no new entries on Arda and certainly didn’t want to hijack any other entry but now that he’s being mentioned I thought it’d be useful.

  • 60 Geordie Gerrard7 // May 26, 2008 at 0:07

    gsfan, can you translate please?

  • 61 Geordie Gerrard7 // May 26, 2008 at 0:10

is there stilll a chance we will get him, iv heard alot about him going to spurs and everton. BECKHAM just scored from his own half for la galaxy.

  • 62 GSfan // May 26, 2008 at 3:15

Right here goes then. Will try to translate it in the most accurate way possible: (The article is named “They only have one wish”)

The two stars of the national team got together for Milliyet (the newspaper interviewing them)… Both Emre and Arda gave clear answers regarding the rumours that have been going around.

    - Emre let’s start with you. You are an experienced player. What would a realistic target be for us?

“The fact that we even made it out of the qualifying group despite all the difficulties we had is an accomplishment. But now we are left as only the 16 most powerful teams in Europe. Our main objective is to of course qualify from the first (group) round. I’d say a quarter final or even a semi final would be a nice accomplishment for us”

    - Arda, one of your biggest dreams must be to become the European Champions… what would you like to say?

“If we were to win a championship this would be a huge achievement for us. But we need to take this step by step at first. Even qualifying from the groups in the Euros would be an accomplishment for us. Should we succeed in doing this I’m pretty sure the confidence in this young team will be boosted. After that I’d say everything will be different. This is a tournament. You are going to play three important matches. If you concentrate well you have a good chance to overcome your opponents. None of our opponents can be labelled as easy. They have very powerful traits. We must be on our toes. I have a lot of hope in this team. We really can do something here.”

    - Emre, do you see Arda as your heir?

“I see the term ‘heir’ being associated with big players. This could be a Maradona, or a Hagi. These sorts of players can have heirs. If I were to be honest, among Galatasaray’s youth the only player who made an impression was Sabri till now. However Arda showed a lot more potential than Sabri. They’re both players of different characteristics anyway. Arda came out from the youths as a star player. In other words people expected a lot from Arda, even in his first match. When we came from the youths we were being praised for our effort and skills, but Arda’s different in this case. Everyone expects Arda to change the flow of a match. This is why he has to endure a lot more responsibility than we did. And undoubtedly, Arda made the biggest contribution to Galatasaray winning the title this year.”

    - Arda, do you get excited during matches when you watch Emre play in the Premiership?

(Emre suddenly interrupts and says “He didn’t even get the chance of watching me play much to even get excited this year. He couldn’t watch much cuz of injuries”)

Emre agabey (this is a title said to those who are older than you and that you look up to) is someone who shines with his character before his footballing skills. He is someone that we all call ‘agabey’. His lifestyle, conversations, behaviour, just about everything about him contributes in making him a lot different than others in the field. I really like him.”

    - Emre, there are rumours going about whether you’re going to come back to Galatasaray or not, and Arda there are rumours going about on whether you’re going to England or not. Let’s start from you Arda. What’s the current situation?

“Being transferred to those kinds of places ain’t as easy as people make it out to be. Sometimes they say ‘Is it right for Emre to go to Newcastle?” and stuff like that. Newcastle ain’t a club to be underestimated in any way and certainly isn’t an easy club to be transferred to. But I have no idea how the conditions will develop in these times. Right now we’re focusing on the European Championships and I still have a contract. The conditions set for me to be transferred such as the asking price and things like that sound a bit ‘heavy’. However if my club’s conditions were to be met, I would love to play in another European team. It would be even better if this club were to have Emre ‘agabey’ in the team. I have a dream like this. But life is unpredictable of course. I’m just hoping everything will turn out fine for everyone in the future. If I were to stay in Galatasaray, it’s my home anyways, I grew up here and therefore it would be no problem”.

    - Emre, what would you like to say? Arda is hoping to play with you. Would you want this too?

“I hope so… However Arda’s very comfortable, he has the potential to play in a team that could play in the Champion’s League semi-final or even the final. That is, as long as he puts the effort. Because football isn’t just about raw skill anymore and effort seems to be much more important. He would shine with his skills in any team anyways. It’s a fact that playing football in Turkey isn’t very easy. The pressure that’s being put on the players can be seen. There have been times where I have mentored him but, in the end of the day everything comes down to sharing thoughts with others and coming up with his own decision in which he could say “I made this decision” , even if this decision were to be a mistake. I’m really hoping he will surpass us in his career.”

    - Emre, ever since Adnan Polat became the Chairman, you have always been linked with a move to Galatasaray. Did you ever meet?

“I haven’t met with anyone in anyway regarding this. I’ve been playing abroad for 8 years now. My life hasn’t changed one bit. If I were to return to Turkey one day I’ll be very clear about it. In the end we’re all professional football players. Whatever the conditions draw us to we’ll go there. We have been doing this for a while now. It could be Galatasaray or even another team. I will do whatever I can to contribute to my team. We have been brought up from a very good youth system. I believe we’ve been brought up to do the best we can for whatever team we play in.”

  • 63 GSfan // May 26, 2008 at 3:26

Btw there has been no news cropping up whatsoever on the Spurs or Everton making a move on Arda. There was just some silly article several days ago saying Arda was going to sign for Everton in 10 days ignoring the fact that he’s already in the national team camp and there is no chance in hell he could get a break in the middle of the European Championships just so he can go and sign for Everton. The source which claimed that is just saying rubbish and they haven’t even mentioned anything about Everton ever since then.

  • 64 Ross // May 26, 2008 at 4:00

” I would love to play in another European team. It would be even better if this club were to have Emre ‘agabey’ in the team. I have a dream like this.”

so he compliments our club, says how we’re not to be underestimated, claims emre is a hero before saying it would be a dream to play with him at his club….eg, the toon.
..if we havent made a solid attempt to sign this lad, then we’d be daft not to. the club and his agent have made it pretty clear if the price is right, he’ll leave. he’s made it pretty clear he’d love to play in europe, especially with emre.
Get on it cashley, he’s young and looks to have bags of talent. If it turns out we have made a bid, yet we wont go any higher and we lose out on him for the sake of a few million, i’d be incredibly dissappointed.
