Newcastle United have added top Spanish scout, Pablo Longoria to their staff.
Dennis Wise – scouting staff building up at Newcastle
The Sunday Sun says Longoria is just 21 years old, and is working with Newcastle’s technical co-ordinator Jeff Vetere in scouring Europe for young talent.
We don’t know if this is a full time appointment or whether the 21 year-old is on some kind of retainer.
Pablo Longoria had identified several new signings for Racing Santander manager Marcelino last summer and during his time at previous club Recreativo de Huelva. Marcelino was suspiciously linked as a possible new manager at Newcastle yesterday in the Sunday Sun, which we find amazing, to say the least.
But the young Spaniard has absolutely no professional background in football, and we have to say we find this an odd appointment.
He is said to have a great knowledge of players in Europe but that knowledge is said to be gained from the Internet.
Unusual indeed, and with no background in football you wonder how he can identify good players from the many on show. There are many good players on show as teenagers, but few of them actually make the grade, and that’s the job of good scouts – to be able to pick the ones that will make it to the top.
Longoria has worked in the past in a similar capacity, with both Racing Santander and Recreativo Huelva.
