Newcastle Add 21 Year-Old To Scouting Staff

May 26th, 2008 · 41 Comments

Newcastle United have added top Spanish scout, Pablo Longoria to their staff.

dennis-wise-22.jpg

Dennis Wise - scouting staff building up at Newcastle

The Sunday Sun says Longoria is just 21 years old, and is working with Newcastle’s technical co-ordinator Jeff Vetere in scouring Europe for  young talent.

We don’t know if this is a full time appointment or whether the 21 year-old is on some kind of retainer.

Pablo Longoria had identified several new signings for Racing Santander manager Marcelino last summer and during his time at previous club Recreativo de Huelva. Marcelino was suspiciously linked as a possible new manager at Newcastle yesterday in the Sunday Sun, which we find amazing, to say the least.

But the young Spaniard has absolutely no professional background in football, and we have to say we find this an odd appointment.

He is said to have a great knowledge of players in Europe but that knowledge is said to be gained from the Internet.

Unusual indeed, and with no background in football you wonder how he can identify good players from the many on show. There are many good players on show as teenagers, but few of them actually make the grade, and that’s the job of good scouts - to be able to pick the ones that will make it to the top.

Longoria has worked in the past in a similar capacity, with both Racing Santander and Recreativo Huelva.
Comments welcome.

  • 3 Slam Dunc // May 26, 2008 at 9:34

Yes, interesting, made me laugh, a 21 year old internet wiz as our European scout.

Also this was a good laugh for a bank holiday morning:

Keegan for Chelsea, I think he’d do a great job.

  • 4 Andy1 // May 26, 2008 at 9:36

Might as well just ask Tom_Toon if he wants a job.

  • 5 The Entertainers // May 26, 2008 at 9:37

Is this in line with our new youth policy? Watch out Kev you may be too old to manage the club soon.

  • 6 Ben_BKK // May 26, 2008 at 9:39

If his sister’s called Eva, get him to bring her along to the games ;)

Keegan for chelsea? To be honest it would not suprise me at all ha ha abramotits is a nut case and wants to see attackin football..
It could be the sickest joke in toon history if it happens ha ha

  • 9 Tommy // May 26, 2008 at 9:43

Maybe they can employ me.. I’m bloody good at football manager too :)

  • 10 MarK // May 26, 2008 at 9:44

    bet tom toon is jealous.

  • 11 Jimmie // May 26, 2008 at 9:46

Maybe he´s good at playing Championship manager?

  • 12 Marat18 // May 26, 2008 at 9:48

I can see Longorio coming to KK:

I’ve found a young cracking striker!
    positioning - 15,
    finishing - 16,
strength - only 10, but it can be fixed with right training workload
    stamina - 12
    technique - 14

cannot see professionalism and injure proneness, where do you have FM scout to open hidden skills, gaffer?

  • 13 Gunnar/Iceland // May 26, 2008 at 9:59

    haha! good one Marat18!

  • 14 Beastie // May 26, 2008 at 10:00

hahahahaha nothing suprises me with the toon, but going on to players we should be after bridge, SWP, JO, Turan, cueller

  • 15 Hadji // May 26, 2008 at 10:15

Tom Toon…There goes your chance, hey its ok boy,he’s only 3 years older than you.:-)

  • 16 Geordie Gerrard7 // May 26, 2008 at 10:15

one year older than me and he is a scout, he must of won the equivelent of the suns “DREAM TEAM”

  • 17 Leo // May 26, 2008 at 11:03

haha for a second i actually thought it was going to be you tom toon

get your application in there son.

    i have a quick theory,

the whole rumour the other day about marcelino came about because the press got wind of the 21 agent coming to newcastle who helped mareclino in the past….

they tried to make something massive on this…
and will make storys like it is no coincidence

  • 18 zhun // May 26, 2008 at 11:16

hey, wise take tom toon if u want =)

  • 19 sirjasontoon // May 26, 2008 at 11:29

This guy sounds like a boy scout not a football scout.

This recruitment set up is just going from bad to worse and i think we should forget our youth policy at the moment and buy some decent players not 12 year old italian goalkeepers.

I just can’t see anything positive coming out of the toon at the moment and can’t remember the last positive news I heard..looking back it was probably big sam’s sacking.

I can’t see keegan tolerating this nonsense much longer and think the structures that are being put in place like a cap on salaries etc is just going to hinder us in retaining and attracting decent players.

What the f is going on !?

  • 20 ToonKing // May 26, 2008 at 11:47

wow, we really are the biggest nutter of all clubs, you gotta love the toon, it never gets boring.

    what next ??

Newcastle hire 7 year old Martha Stewart for the conditioning coaching job.

  • 21 ObaFan2 // May 26, 2008 at 11:50

This dream team of scouting staff is growing daily but they cannot even sign current players to new deals!!!!!!!

Come on pull your fingers out!

  • 22 Tom_Toon // May 26, 2008 at 12:11

:) What a job, but 21 years old is just getting silly.

  • 23 Sav // May 26, 2008 at 12:12

I’d have thought there’s any number of 21 year-old lads scouring Europe for young talent.
Presumably, the Toon anorak with PL on it will be his, then?
I hope he knows even Luque looked half decent on YouTube.

  • 24 toon1978 // May 26, 2008 at 12:28

What a dream job good on the kid but a piss take to all the loyal toon fans. I know its early doors with regards to signings but its getting me down big time, for a starters Modric was going to join NUFC, then we are strongly linked with Arda then it all dies down, then Dunne no because he is to old, then Cueller today no because Rangers want to hang on to him which isnt Ashleys fault then SWP we may have to wait because of manager situations, then KK to be replaced with a foreign manager and KK of to Chelsea, then we employ a 21 year old to scout for us then we seem to have a chairman that is so bloody tight he cant get his hands in his pockets, then reduce wage bills, no contract with Owen, no contract with Taylor, staff coming and going ie Mort who has only been here 5 minutes, Dennis Wise hmmm what the hell does he do, the list goes on and on this does not sound like a well run club to me up to now, i am beginning to hope that Ashley does sell this beloved club of ours because he is taken us for a bloody ride. Granted most of this stuff is paper talk but there must be an element of truth somewhere because Ashley aint coming out to deny this or dong anything to prove the doubters wrong.

  • 25 Bill F // May 26, 2008 at 12:28

This has got to be a wind-up, I’ve heard we are getting them young but this is riddicylus (to quote a friend of Pooh). The R-Squad might as well just log onto this blog. I really thought that Tom-Toon had got the job for a moment. How much is this kid supposed to be getting.

Or is this the Greek/Toon version of a Catamite for someone on the board?

  • 26 seetow // May 26, 2008 at 12:34

LOL employ me! i brought crewe alexandra to champs league and won it! and managed to buy mika aaritalo for 900k and resell him for 24mil! (something cashley would like..) wise, employ me!

  • 27 Nobby's Dad // May 26, 2008 at 13:12

toon1978….You are possibly the most negative poster in the WORLD. There are non -Toon fans who are more positive towards the club.

Look at the history of signings ….how many are done 3 weeks after the end of the season - especially before a major championship. You bang on about how much you’ve put into the club buying a couple of season tickets…. I’ve put in for almost 40 years but don’t expect to dictate to an owner who has shelved out £200+ million. If you want some action, make a fortune and buy in youself….if not be more realistic.

You know nothing about Ashley and all you do is speculate. Pull yourself together and get behind the club, owner and scouts…..it’s call SUPPORTING!!

  • 28 Nobby's Dad // May 26, 2008 at 13:20

toon1978….and by the way I’ve a friend who starts working for the club on 1st July in a scouting capacity. He’s met Wise and says the set up is very very good - so unlike you I have a little more knowledge (if you want to check the name type Eddie Kyle into Google) - he’s worked with Lil Contelo in the past at Leicester - that’s who’s asked him to go to the Toon.

  • 29 Geordie Gerrard7 // May 26, 2008 at 13:31

so what if he is 21, dont really bother me, any of us would take the job, just hopefully we can lure the internet scouring little jammy b*stard to the nufcblog, then we can tell him to pull out all the stops to sign people like srna, turan, gomez, veloso, bilayadtenov (sp), lanzfame, etc etc. everyone stop being sooo negative for fs

  • 30 toon1978 // May 26, 2008 at 13:32

Ok Nobbys Dad point taken i cannot say i know more then you about NUFC beause i do not know you but i can say i have been suppoting NUFC buying season tickets for the last 15-16 years and i have been to mny many european games home and away And F.A. cup semi finals and finals and many other pointless away games so i think i have a little knowledge of NUFC. I am negative because Ashley has sgown absolutely nothing to be positive about. I have my opinion and i would love Ashley to prove me wrong as well as yourself.I do not apologise for being negative UNTIL i see something positive. One positive is that he has cleared alot of dept if not all at NUFC but that will not win you a trophy.

  • 31 ToonRich // May 26, 2008 at 13:40

If Tom_Toon can spot talent at his age, then we should give the lad a chance. It might not be such a bad thing being so young, he might be able to have a word with the player he’s scounting and level with him so to speak…who knows!

  • 32 Greek Toon // May 26, 2008 at 13:52

    Bill f

I’m fresh out of catamites I’m afraid.

  • 33 nightfall // May 26, 2008 at 14:29

damn…this guy got the best job in the world… amm..why not me? :)

  • 34 toonoholic // May 26, 2008 at 14:56

when ashley said he wld cut wage bill of players , did he mention he wld pump that wage bill in the administration ?

  • 35 Bill F // May 26, 2008 at 15:27

Yeah there has been a dearth of them since the time of Socrates, I’m afraid. :)

  • 36 Newcastle United. // May 27, 2008 at 1:21

Anyone know the crack with Arda Turan these days?

  • 37 brad // May 27, 2008 at 9:01

turan is in very advanced talks with spurs who have offered 2mill more than ashley.

  • 38 Ian // May 27, 2008 at 9:16

They have also signed an extra couple of cleaners just to show they are serious about our future!!!

  • 39 Archie Brand // May 27, 2008 at 10:10

I find it sad that gossip can raise this much of a response.

It is more likely that the 21 year old is trying to tout his services, and rather than being “taken on” by Newcastle has simply established some kind of a link.

Nothing shocking in a 21 year old being a scout.
Every other week there are 52,000 people in St james Park who think they know better than Keegan, Wise and Ashley. Why shouldn’t a youngster be able to spot talent?

  • 40 chuck // May 27, 2008 at 16:39

An obvious snub to the Allknowing “Tom Toon”

  • 41 fen tuttile // Jun 16, 2008 at 20:19

Dr. Ed Harrison is a retired IBM Consulting Group Executive who now has time, and lots of it, after 34 years at the American computer company, to write about his lifelong passion - Newcastle United Football Club.

Ed was born and bred in Newcastle Upon Tyne, and watched his first game at St. James’ Park in 1949 as a 4 year-old with his Mother and Father. He was told to look out for number 9 - Jackie Milburn – the great Wor Jackie - and was he fast!

In football terms Ed was a goalkeeper and played for Wharrier Street Primary School and Newcastle Minors (Newcastle Schoolboys Under-11), in 1956 and went on to play for Newcastle Schoolboys and Northumberland Schoolboys (Under-15) in 1959 and an England Schoolboys trial.

He was at Newcastle United for a couple of years from 1960 as an amateur, while still at school, and played with Bobby Moncur and David Craig, amongst others, for the Newcastle United Under-18 side (Newcastle N’s in those days), during the relegation season of 1960-1961.

Ed attended Heaton Technical and Manor Park schools, and then went on to study at both King’s College, London (BSc Electrical Engineering) and Newcastle University (PhD Computer Science). He played for Newcastle Universities and England Universities from 1967 until 1970.

But a short couple of years after Ed joined IBM in 1970, he was shipped over to the USA, with his new wife Madeline, a beautiful local Newcastle lassie.

At IBM Ed was in computer systems and network design for 34 years, and in his last 10 years at the company was persuaded to enter executive management. where he ended up running IBM's Americas' Network Consulting Group for 5 years from the late 1990s, and was instrumental in forming the IBM alliance with Cisco Systems in 1999.

Ed and Madeline live just outside Raleigh in North Carolina. Their twin sons Paul and Neil, and daughter Elaine, are now in their early 30s, live close by, and Neil has carried on the family tradition by becoming an avid Newcastle United supporter.

And one final thing that is so true - you can take the boy out of Newcastle but you can't take Newcastle out of the boy!

    Howay The Lads!!
