Newcastle Target Watched by Pompey

May 26th, 2008 by Ed Harrison · 223 Comments

There is news today that Portsmouth may be after one of Newcastle’s reported targets.

Amara Diane - Portsmouth may be interested

Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp has reportedly watched PSG striker Amare Diane over the weekend.

Redknapp is thought to have watched Diane in action in the French Cup against Olympique Lyon.

Newcastle have also watched the Ivorian Coast player several times in the last few months.

We have no idea if Newcastle are really interested in Diane, and the club have certainly made no bid as yet for the striker.

But we have Diane down on our list of potential  acquisitions at Newcastle this summer, along with 123 other players.   :D

Here are some details on the player:

VELOSO , TURAN AND GOMEZ OR GOMIS

    THE PLEAD CONTINUES !

  • 4 Leo // May 26, 2008 at 17:53

let them get him because it will mean when the ACN comes they will be further limited

  • 5 Toon1978 // May 26, 2008 at 17:55

I aint seen much of Diane TBH, i think KK list would of looked something like this…

    Dunne
    SWP
    Modric
    Riise
    Veloso
    Gomis

But as we already know Modric is at Spurs but the rest are still available we just need to wait and hope.

  • 6 toonoholic // May 26, 2008 at 17:56

Midfielder Seydou Keita has joined Barcelona on a four-year deal from Sevilla.

wonder if we cld put in a cheeky bid for iniesta

  • 7 cooldj // May 26, 2008 at 17:58

just going back to gomez all we know is that scouts watched stuttgart. we don’t know who they were watching and if they were going to sign that person or chose not to.

  • 8 Geordie Gerrard7 // May 26, 2008 at 17:59

    iniesta- sod off man

  • 9 Bill F // May 26, 2008 at 18:02

On the Pompey site it probably says Pompey target watched by Newcastle!!!!

  • 10 chuck // May 26, 2008 at 18:06

Yo! forget Dunne and Cuellar, not to mention Veloso, I hear the Toon has a chance to sign James Harper folks.

  • 11 richie // May 26, 2008 at 18:06

could we tempt ex arsenal midfielder edu back to england??

  • 12 toonoholic // May 26, 2008 at 18:07

    james harper .

    i am so excited

  • 13 Geordie Gerrard7 // May 26, 2008 at 18:13

    i can hardly controll myself

  • 14 Toon1978 // May 26, 2008 at 18:17

James Harper is not a big name but givin the chance to play in a good side it may bring the best out of him. If we could get good players who can lead us into a Uefa spot next season players like Dunne, Sidwell, Harper, Diane, Shorey, and maybe a big signing like Veloso OR Gomez one or the other to lead us up the table and then IF we qualify or Europe we can look to players like Arshivin, Gomes, SWP, Henry and players alike because lets face these big players want europe and its something we cannot offer at the moment but who knows with some sensible signings and a bit of luck then maybe we will be back to where we should be.

  • 15 richie // May 26, 2008 at 18:17

pretty much had enough of the speculation, prob wont b till august till we sign anyone, wat does everyone reckon

  • 16 Geordie Gerrard7 // May 26, 2008 at 18:19

my little turkish mate said that arda has agreed in principle to join us but i cant find nowt, probably having me on

  • 17 nate dawg // May 26, 2008 at 18:20

if we do sign gomez i would be as happy as when kk came back seen him play and he allways impress’s me top class in 2 years he will be up there with torres and messi and so on as best player in world

  • 18 richie // May 26, 2008 at 18:21

toon1978 good point i mentiond gettin cheap youth in like :
eg these type of players maybe 6 or 7 of them for 25 mill
    garven
    scanell
    eagles
    kilgallon
    johny evans
    aaron ramsey

    wats ur toughts on this??

  • 19 Toon1978 // May 26, 2008 at 18:26

Richie i agree with you on all of them players, players that are not world class but have Premiership quality that will give us a bit of bite and spark. I would love to see the likes of Veloso, Gomez, Arshivin, Henry, Arda, but we need to understand that may not happen until we get ourselves in a european place, dont get me wrong if we sign one of the players i have mentioned there i would be over the moon.

  • 20 Blacktoon // May 26, 2008 at 18:40

Get the black Bastard’s in the squad. And pay them peanuts.

  • 21 nate dawg // May 26, 2008 at 18:44

arda would prefer a move to us than everton now the board room men have to pull there finger out and get someone who wants to play for us and who is a talent, hopefully they have learnt from the modric saga

p.s. has everyone has forgotten giles barnes cheap decent and some premier league exsperience

  • 22 ToonFanInLondon // May 26, 2008 at 18:49

Btw Ive seen Ceullar play a few times and he would be a real good buy by the looks of it, been a rock at the back for ranger no doubt! I wouldnt be surprised if one of the top 4 get linked with him over the summer…

  • 23 toon4lyf // May 26, 2008 at 19:05

    aimar
    d’allesandro
    milito
    killgalon
    bridge

  • 24 Andy1 // May 26, 2008 at 19:11

Where’s this Kilgallon stuff coming from? You mean the ex Leeds youngster? He is in no way good enough for us.

  • 25 Cloudstrife // May 26, 2008 at 19:14

i’ll take barnes. he could be a very good AM in the future. shame he wouldnt have anyone tutoring him in the arts though.

but he’s one i’d definitely buy. along with Shorey. if we were to pinch someone from barca i’d tak Gudjonssen.

  • 26 The Entertainers // May 26, 2008 at 19:38

I think Barnes is a great shout. Young enough, good enough, cheap enough. With Barton not back in the near future we are a bit short in midfield when adapting the 4-3-3 formation. As for Diane, does’nt excite me. Would prefer Gomez, Gomis or Crouch.

  • 27 Geordie Gerrard7 // May 26, 2008 at 19:41

apart from barnes will be out untill january. maybe sign him in january

  • 28 Tom_Toon // May 26, 2008 at 19:42

Barnes defintely isnt good enough, 2 serious knee injuries at 19/20, not looking good.

  • 29 Geordie Gerrard7 // May 26, 2008 at 19:44

he reminds me alot of goldfish bowl

  • 30 Bigchris // May 26, 2008 at 19:45

Get Bridge, Cuellar, Zander Diamond, Riise, SWP, Downing or Lennon, João Moutinho, and Berbatov.

  • 31 Geordie Gerrard7 // May 26, 2008 at 19:47

    zander diamand is shite

  • 32 Bigchris // May 26, 2008 at 19:49

I think Zander Diamond is one for the future, seen him play a few times and liked him before he has been getting linked to Man Utd and Arsenal.

  • 33 richie // May 26, 2008 at 19:55

    toon1978 likewise i completey agree

  • 34 Geordie Gerrard7 // May 26, 2008 at 19:55

hes good in the socttish league. he is not good though, luca toni bossed him all game when they played bayern

  • 35 daiv // May 26, 2008 at 19:55

A signing would be nice instead of the constant bull and speculation about all the top players we are going to buy. By August it will be interesting to see how much monet MA has spent ( and remember to include our sales to calculate the bottom line.) I believe £20M would be disappointing but I suppose it depends on the players. A total outlay of £20M is not going to get us a “name.”

  • 36 Bigchris // May 26, 2008 at 20:02

To be fair, its hard to tell who would be good in the premiership from the spl, look at Larrson and Viduka, both had good times after the made the move, but then you look at Boumsong, Miller and Ferguson were useless, but the only two players I would willingly give the chance to prove themselves in the premiership would be Cuellar and Diamond, I believe Cuellar can make the step up and Diamond will be good if given the chance and a year or so.

  • 37 Ross // May 26, 2008 at 20:03

zander diamond is in no way good enough for us.
i have mates who are aberdeen fans and love him, he has som cult status, but even they say he isnt brilliant.
if we take any defender from an SPL team, it will only be cuellar.

  • 38 daiv // May 26, 2008 at 20:09

I notice that Emre was fit to play for Turkey. Always fit to play for Turkey but niggles meant he hardly ever played for NUFC on £50K a week. Sell big time. He is making a muppet out of us.

  • 39 Bigchris // May 26, 2008 at 20:09

If we get rid of Joey Barton, which I think we should, (I never wanted him in the first place) then I think we should go for a guy called De Guzman from Feyenoord, a great up and coming defensive holding midfielder.

Does anyone agree with me and who do you think we should bring in?

  • 40 eddie // May 26, 2008 at 20:12

all a mix up, i think. gomis is known as the ¨next¨ drogba while diane said, somewhere in the mists of time, that drog was his ¨idol¨.
    don´t expect either to come.

  • 41 daiv // May 26, 2008 at 20:13

    Bigchris
We’ll bring in whoever MA thinks will do a job on the cheap.
We should kick out in order of uselessness
    SMITH
    AMEOBI
    DUFF
ZOG (not because useless but a traitor)
    GEREMI
Keep Barton because he is the best c mid we’ve got. Not saying a lot.

  • 42 Bigchris // May 26, 2008 at 20:19

Daiv, I totally agree with you, apart from keeping Barton.

But I do hope MA will give us the money to go for decent players, rather then ones just to make up the numbers.

I have heard a rumour that Newcastle’s new away shirt will be the same as Marseille’s, which looks like this.
    http://www.football-shirts.co.uk/fans/new-marseille-shirts-confirmed_1092

  • 43 Toon Al // May 26, 2008 at 20:27

    that shirt is terrible..

  • 44 Tom_Toon // May 26, 2008 at 20:34

De Guzman is a very attacking midfielder. Think Lampard.

He would never come to us, Cruyff wouldnt let him, he thinks hes a bigger talent than Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Kaka etc.

  • 45 Bigchris // May 26, 2008 at 20:38

Tom_Toon, their is two players by the name of De Guzman, their brothers if I’m not mistaken.

One plays for Feyenoord who is defensive and the other plays for Deportivo, who is attacking.

They both play at international level in the centre of midfield.

  • 46 Marat18 // May 26, 2008 at 20:41

    I like this shirt, tbh.

  • 47 Tom_Toon // May 26, 2008 at 20:41

Nope, other way round mate, Julian for Deportivo is the DM, Jonathan is the AM. Julian plays for Canada, Jonathan hasn’t had a senior call u yet but plays for holland u-21.

  • 48 scottish mag // May 26, 2008 at 20:42

there is jonathon and julian de guzman

jonathon is 20, plays for feyenoord and is attacking mid plays for holland u21’s but is canadian

julian is 27, plays for deportivo and is defensive mid and plays for canada

  • 49 Gooderz // May 26, 2008 at 20:47

Those Marseille players look like their off for a round of golf in that kit.

  • 50 Bigchris // May 26, 2008 at 20:50

Both have played for Canada, but Jonathan played in a friendly and it wasn’t classed as an official game, hence the reason why he can now play for Holland.

  • 51 Geordie Gerrard7 // May 26, 2008 at 20:54

whats this that turan has signed for spurs? and middlesborough had representetives in turkey?

  • 52 Toon1978 // May 26, 2008 at 20:56

  • 53 Marat18 // May 26, 2008 at 20:56

  • 54 Bigchris // May 26, 2008 at 20:59

    Its a load of codswallop!

  • 63 NUFCFAN // May 26, 2008 at 21:14

Ashely will spend - he was going to drop 20 on Modric, so if the talent is right money is there.

didnt he also take a whole load of his own money from accounts for Keegan when he first arriveds as well, but he didnt want to spend. So i think he will come up big. Just the press ruining transfer time for us again.

  • 64 Bigchris // May 26, 2008 at 21:14

wikipedia is a reliable source, isn’t it?, I’ll tell you what, I’ll go on and write that Newcastle are about to sign Ronaldo and Ronaldinho, I bet this time tomorrow the papers are full of it and for some strange reason St James’ Park has 50 thousand people looking over at our great new signings.

  • 65 Geordie Gerrard7 // May 26, 2008 at 21:14

i just text little turkish friend and he said he was messing about him signing for the toon earlier but he has heard nothing about spurs or boro

if spurs steal turan, we’re going to look like a bunch of idiots, whether we’ve made a solid bid or not, because the papers have linked us so frequently, everyone will just assume theyve completly knicked him from us.

  • 81 Toon1978 // May 26, 2008 at 21:37

Football FanCast columnist Jim McKendry cannot understand why Newcastle United never get the respect they duly deserve.

Kevin Keegan is very much an enigma in football and you really either love or loath him. I personally have great admiration and respect for the man, for the simple reason that in the modern day game it is rare that you are treated to such honesty. He is a man of principle, belief and wants his football club to play the right way without having to sacrifice style and effort to achieve his goals. What is so wrong with that? The Premier League would be a much better place, if managers all shared that philosophy.

His return to Newcastle United was greeted with much scepticism within the media, who constantly look to knock the football club. It is something that has become widespread among supporters of other clubs who continually try and belittle the club and put it down in any shape of form - you can bet your bottom dollar that they wouldn’t have mind sharing the same highs and lows that the Toon Army have experienced, since the inauguration of the Premier League.

So why do Newcastle get such a hard time and why are they constantly being dismissed as small fry? What is wrong with a football club having high standards? Would they get more credibility if they decided to play route one and kick and chase their way to success? Why does Newcastle United fail to get the respect they duly deserve?

    Good write up.

  • 82 Toon1978 // May 26, 2008 at 21:40

If Spurs get Arda then good luck to them, just shows who has the ambition and anyway there has been no concrete evidence that we have been after Arda in the first place.

  • 83 Geordie Gerrard7 // May 26, 2008 at 21:56

With the speculation surrounding who will be Chelsea’s new manager, it is pretty certain that the majority of the squad will, given the chance, wait to see who takes over from Avram Grant. However, we here at cfcuk.net are almost 100% certain that one player who will NOT be going north to join Newcastle United is midfielder Shaun Wright-Phillips.

Following Chelsea’s penultimate match of last season’s Premier league programme, the Blues team were going down the St James’ Park tunnel as the Newcastle Utd side were going out on to the pitch to wish their supporters all the best for the summer break.

As Shaun passed one of the Newcastle side – a former team mate – he was asked about the rumours that were already abounding about his possible departure from Stamford Bridge.

He was also asked whether there was any truth in the newspaper stories that were, even then, linking the England midfielder with a move to The Toon.

Before he had the time to answer, the Newcastle player – who shall not be named for obvious reasons – said, “Don’t bother coming up here… it’s a sh*thole!”

With that, the two players then shook hands, wished each other ‘all the best’ and went their separate ways.

This is off CFCUK.NET so i dont know how true this is.

  • 160 Geordie Gerrard7 // May 26, 2008 at 23:56

we need miguel veloso, and i think emre can do the job next to him, on his day he is one of the best playmakers in the world. we need cuellar

  • 161 Geordie Gerrard7 // May 27, 2008 at 0:02

oh good, his advisors will be dealing with things while he is away, so dont be suprised if we were to sign him, then it would be in the next two weeks. all the spurs fans and everton fans seem to be thinking they have got him, but like you say, theres been no news

  • 162 GSfan // May 27, 2008 at 0:03

Yeah and even in that interview he had with Emre which I translated he kind of says Newcastle would be the club he would desire to play in.

  • 163 Geordie Gerrard7 // May 27, 2008 at 0:06

yeah, there was defo a hint. yesterday when arda scored, emre was over the moon for him, how did emre play yesterday. im officially supporting turkey in the euros. lol

  • 164 GSfan // May 27, 2008 at 0:11

Cheers mate :D I’m really hoping we can make an impression in the Euros.

As for Emre he was really good yesterday. Every time he got the ball it wouldn’t be much of a surprise if he would just skip past 2 defenders and make a really good pass after that. Though he did lack a bit defensively…

  • 165 richie // May 27, 2008 at 0:14

thats not what he is good at though is it, its like you said before, go past two players and make something happen, he will be a huge player for us next year. i am going minhead butlins on the 6th for adults weekend with the footy team, and you are playing portugal on the 7th arent you. cant wait, my little turkish mate give me his emre turkey shirt. he really likes the coca cola kid kazim richards, what you think of him?

  • 172 Geordie Gerrard7 // May 27, 2008 at 0:25

    wtf! random

  • 173 GSfan // May 27, 2008 at 0:25

Well, when Emre played for us back in the days the thing he was being praised for was the fact that he could run non-stop for twice the duration of a full match and not get tired while closing down his opponents really well. But right now his offensive abilities seem to outweigh his defensive abilities though I must say he wasn’t this good at offense when he played for us. But ye, he can create a spark in any match.

As for Colin Kazim, he’s actually a substitute in Fenerbahce believe it or not. But I would rate him well. I’m just unsure whether he’s good enough to play in the starting 11. Nevertheless though he definitely has a good future ahead of him since he’s so young.

Richie: Here’s the interview Arda and Emre had:
    http://www.milliyet.com.tr/default.aspx?aType=HaberDetay&Kategori=spor&ArticleID=758657&Date=24.05.2008

The two stars of the national team got together for Milliyet (the newspaper interviewing them)… Both Emre and Arda gave clear answers regarding the rumours that have been going around.

    - Emre let’s start with you. You are an experienced player. What would a realistic target be for us?

“The fact that we even made it out of the qualifying group despite all the difficulties we had is an accomplishment. But now we are left as only the 16 most powerful teams in Europe. Our main objective is to of course qualify from the first (group) round. I’d say a quarter final or even a semi final would be a nice accomplishment for us”

    - Arda, one of your biggest dreams must be to become the European Champions… what would you like to say?

“If we were to win a championship this would be a huge achievement for us. But we need to take this step by step at first. Even qualifying from the groups in the Euros would be an accomplishment for us. Should we succeed in doing this I’m pretty sure the confidence in this young team will be boosted. After that I’d say everything will be different. This is a tournament. You are going to play three important matches. If you concentrate well you have a good chance to overcome your opponents. None of our opponents can be labelled as easy. They have very powerful traits. We must be on our toes. I have a lot of hope in this team. We really can do something here.”

    - Emre, do you see Arda as your heir?

“I see the term ‘heir’ being associated with big players. This could be a Maradona, or a Hagi. These sorts of players can have heirs. If I were to be honest, among Galatasaray’s youth the only player who made an impression was Sabri till now. However Arda showed a lot more potential than Sabri. They’re both players of different characteristics anyway. Arda came out from the youths as a star player. In other words people expected a lot from Arda, even in his first match. When we came from the youths we were being praised for our effort and skills, but Arda’s different in this case. Everyone expects Arda to change the flow of a match. This is why he has to endure a lot more responsibility than we did. And undoubtedly, Arda made the biggest contribution to Galatasaray winning the title this year.”

    - Arda, do you get excited during matches when you watch Emre play in the Premiership?

(Emre suddenly interrupts and says “He didn’t even get the chance of watching me play much to even get excited this year. He couldn’t watch much cuz of injuries”)

Emre agabey (this is a title said to those who are older than you and that you look up to) is someone who shines with his character before his footballing skills. He is someone that we all call ‘agabey’. His lifestyle, conversations, behaviour, just about everything about him contributes in making him a lot different than others in the field. I really like him.”

    - Emre, there are rumours going about whether you’re going to come back to Galatasaray or not, and Arda there are rumours going about on whether you’re going to England or not. Let’s start from you Arda. What’s the current situation?

“Being transferred to those kinds of places ain’t as easy as people make it out to be. Sometimes they say ‘Is it right for Emre to go to Newcastle?” and stuff like that. Newcastle ain’t a club to be underestimated in any way and certainly isn’t an easy club to be transferred to. But I have no idea how the conditions will develop in these times. Right now we’re focusing on the European Championships and I still have a contract. The conditions set for me to be transferred such as the asking price and things like that sound a bit ‘heavy’. However if my club’s conditions were to be met, I would love to play in another European team. It would be even better if this club were to have Emre ‘agabey’ in the team. I have a dream like this. But life is unpredictable of course. I’m just hoping everything will turn out fine for everyone in the future. If I were to stay in Galatasaray, it’s my home anyways, I grew up here and therefore it would be no problem”.

    - Emre, what would you like to say? Arda is hoping to play with you. Would you want this too?

“I hope so… However Arda’s very comfortable, he has the potential to play in a team that could play in the Champion’s League semi-final or even the final. That is, as long as he puts the effort. Because football isn’t just about raw skill anymore and effort seems to be much more important. He would shine with his skills in any team anyways. It’s a fact that playing football in Turkey isn’t very easy. The pressure that’s being put on the players can be seen. There have been times where I have mentored him but, in the end of the day everything comes down to sharing thoughts with others and coming up with his own decision in which he could say “I made this decision” , even if this decision were to be a mistake. I’m really hoping he will surpass us in his career.”

    - Emre, ever since Adnan Polat became the Chairman, you have always been linked with a move to Galatasaray. Did you ever meet?

“I haven’t met with anyone in anyway regarding this. I’ve been playing abroad for 8 years now. My life hasn’t changed one bit. If I were to return to Turkey one day I’ll be very clear about it. In the end we’re all professional football players. Whatever the conditions draw us to we’ll go there. We have been doing this for a while now. It could be Galatasaray or even another team. I will do whatever I can to contribute to my team. We have been brought up from a very good youth system. I believe we’ve been brought up to do the best we can for whatever team we play in.”

Anyone read this about SWP yet?
    http://cfcuk.net/story.php?id=100925

    ” By: The Informer
    Date: 26 May 2008

After that piece of advice, given with the best of intentions, it’s a safe bet that Shaun Wright-Phillips will not, should he consider leaving Stamford Bridge, be venturing to the grim norvern wastelands of Newcastle! ”

    Rumour or truth?

  • 177 Geordie Gerrard7 // May 27, 2008 at 0:31

no 15 mill for veloso marat- gs fan- arda seems like a level headed youngster wich is rare of someone with wich the hype he is surrounded by. yeah i seen kazim richards come on against chelsea, they didnt know how to handle him as he is just raw pace, its weird he went to fener though. he just looks like an impact player that can come on and cause promblems. how about gala? are they being linkeed with moves for any players?

i was at ire v serbia and there were clear signs of his old self. he was dragged down a few times for free kicks, but he had t confidence t go at the full backs and he got some joy, pre season is key for him more than any nufc player, i think hel stay

  • 187 GSfan // May 27, 2008 at 0:43

Well, when Arda just emerged from the youths early on in the year, he did kinda go off track and the fans were getting worried. He would be seen at some of Istanbul’s best nightclubs but ‘the fox’ (our coach in those times Karl Heinz Feldkamp, who was known to be a coach of strict discipline) took care of him really well I would say. This is just my theory ofc but I’m sure it had an impact on what Arda is today.

Colin Kazim is raw pace that’s true but it’s not a surprise Fenerbahce got him. Those guys are really ambitious and the fact that they made it to the quarter finals and even gave Chelsea the only loss they had in European Club Competition this year kind of shows this. Funny how they couldn’t win the other 2 cups cuz of us this year though :p

As for Galatasaray, well… our main concern is appointing a new coach for the time being. We played a quarter of the season without a coach. I know for sure we’re trying to get a keeper and on top of that we had been linked with the likes of Crespo and Brozek though I really doubt we’re after them. We don’t really have the financial status to buy anyone just like every year (and we’re even being mocked for it cuz we’re so poor :p).

  • 188 richie // May 27, 2008 at 0:45

lol GG7. I’m pretty sure that’s someone’s comment from somewhere :p Anyway here’s the translation:

“With the headbutt he did on Jurietti in the match against Bordeaux he really sparked just like Zidane! That’s my boy!!! In the 2006-2007 season (when he was loaned from the youths to Vestel Manisa) he scored 8 goals in 34 matches. In the Premier Division he scored 4 goals in 24 matches. During the transfer period the first club that was interested in him was Tottenham and they had made a bid of 13 million pounds. This offer has been the highest offer made to any Turkish player so far. He is said to be the best player this generation raised.”

Well ye we did an incredible job of winning the title, no one would have even thought Galatasaray would come through to take it after Feldkamp resigned and the team was set for its doom. 7-8 wins in a row without a coach really showed how these guys didn’t want to give up and they refused to take any bonuses for any wins or even goals scored during this period.

As for our next coach, we had been linked with Laudrup and S
