There was some news yesterday that Newcastle may take another look at Leeds United striker Jermaine Beckford.

Jermaine Beckford – 24 year-old 6’2″ Leeds striker
Now that Leeds will not be in the Championship next season it may be a good time for the club to look at the 24 year-old. He’s scored a lot of goals but at that age it’s very unusual for a player to come good at a much higher level.
Leeds were beaten 1-0 by Doncaster Rovers in the play-offs to get to the Championship next season and former Newcastle youngster Paul Huntington was in the Leeds side at center-back. Beckford also played the whole game for Leeds United.
Beckford was linked with a move to St James’ Park shortly after his former boss Dennis Wise was appointed as executive director.
However, a dip in form for the London-born player resulted in him scoring just five times since the turn of the year to finally reach 20 goals, after he had made a terrific start to the season.
Jermaine Beckford stands 6’2†tall and has now played 49 times for Leeds with 20 goals, and it is reported he may now be available for a reduced price, with Leeds having to reassess their finances ahead of another season in League 1.
But with Keegan saying he only wants top talent brought into the club in the summer, we’d be surprised if he sanctioned any move for the player.
We wonder if Jermaine has the class we need up front in the new Newcastle side.
We’d be surprised if he has.
What do you think?
Comments welcome.

lets not sign him-instead give carroll more opportunities. AND GET RID OF AMEOBI ALREADY!!!

Are people thinking Wise = Beckford?….Would be very disappointed if we signed him. At 24 years old what would that say to the likes of Carroll? Its not as if hes a Vokes, where we could have loaned him out for a year or two. I really do think the papers are putting 2 and 2 together and getting 5 on this one, after all would’nt be the first time the papers are off target, in what is a slow start to the transfer window by the whole of the premier league.
3 ELFER // May 27, 2008 at 9:40 AM
Hope not, we need real targets!

Well, when you’re having problems getting Eto’o; Gomis; Gomez and the like to sign for the club, I guess this guy is the next obvious choice!!!!!
Presumably someone is having a laugh – at least I hope they are. Its not April 1st again is it????

I really hope this is just crap – we have Owen, Martins, Viduka and Carroll, why do we need another striker?
9 tdt // May 27, 2008 at 9:53 AM
paper talk, although maybe he’s one of the youngsters we’re gettin this summer, not one of teh 1st teamers? the more the merrier youngsters that could play in the U18 or reserve teams I say
10 The Entertainers // May 27, 2008 at 9:54 AM
I do believe we need another striker. Carroll is a great prospect, but yet to prove it at a significant level. Failed at Preston and needs to go back out on loan to a Championship side (much like Man U did with Campbell @ Hull) With only 3 strikers left a Newcastle and Viduka not going to last a full season, we really need a striker with presence, Gomez, Gomis, Crouch, Ashton take your pick, but we do need that kind of striker.
11 Jim // May 27, 2008 at 10:04 AM
Ashton or Kuyt
12 Ben_BKK // May 27, 2008 at 10:06 AM
Didn’t someone say something about us agreeing a move in principal for Arda? Maybe that’s what your post is about…obviously it could all be BS.
13 Eric // May 27, 2008 at 10:06 AM
The Entertainers make a lot of sense. This Beckford though is not of the right quality. Not for NUFC. If Wise starts getting in his mates we will end up playing leeds in 2 years – and it will not be in the EPL!
14 Geordie Gerrard7 // May 27, 2008 at 10:09 AM
yeah my turkish mate told me we have, but he was pulling my leg, but if u look at the previous article, we spoke to the gala fan last night
15 Geordie Nick // May 27, 2008 at 10:09 AM
callum- we need another striker because
1. viduka is out for 6 months
2. andy carroll is totally unproven at a decent level, wasnt exactly on fire at preston was he, but for sum reason everyon on ere thinks he amazing, but thy hav no backup for this
16 Leo // May 27, 2008 at 10:23 AM
if keegan wants him i will just sit and wait to see how it turns out
17 figsdad // May 27, 2008 at 10:31 AM
well my turkish takeaway place in blyth northumberland say turan is the best player ever in turkey and way better than emre and tuncay and they say he’s agreed verbally to sign for us as they get papers and got there footy turkish channel in the shop..
i know them well…
18 GM // May 27, 2008 at 10:32 AM
Pure garbage, headless chicken, bad attitude not even championship standard player.
19 9 Shearer // May 27, 2008 at 10:33 AM
King Kev said he is sticking to 4-3-3 so we dont need new strickers we can use our wingers in those positions they can do it well as Big Sam used to play Milner
20 THELONGSHANKS // May 27, 2008 at 10:41 AM
No way do we want this lad he aint good enuf an doesnt go under buying young talent as he’s 24.Turan,veleso,richards,gomis these players we should be after.
21 Sav // May 27, 2008 at 10:42 AM
We need a striker to back up Viduka and until Andy Carroll gets experience but I don’t think it is where KK will spend the bulk of his money this summer. That should go on a hot central midfielder where we are most lacking. And forget SWP. Priorities are right down the middle: CB, CM and a big, mobile front man. After that we need cover at LB.
22 toonoholic // May 27, 2008 at 10:42 AM
Jermaine who ??
however one player who has come good with age = BULLARD
23 Geordie Gerrard7 // May 27, 2008 at 10:43 AM
i have heard a few things like that figsdad, on saturday we went into the kebab shop just to ask about arda. but i have a turkish mate, and he seems to think he is defo coming, i dunno what to think really
24 The Entertainers // May 27, 2008 at 10:50 AM
I hope we do use the 4-3-3 formation, as it brought back the flowing football we DEMAND. However it would be foolish to think we could go to Old Trafford and the likes and play this way. Come to think of it Man U, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal alter their formations from time to time. Due to this reason we need more players to be able to adapt to the varying formations, as our squad is too thin to cope with any variety. But what ever formation we decide, i still hope we get the big striker, i for one crave.

Looks pipe,
Not a big name so I will continue to be bored senseless.

26 Callum // May 27, 2008 at 10:54 AM
Geordienick – I should rephrase what i said, we do need another striker but we first have to sort out other parts of the team and we also dont need strikers of league 1 quality…
27 Nick Dryden // May 27, 2008 at 11:01 AM
if we’re going for the likes of beckford why are we getting rid of Ameobi? Compared to Smith
Shola is a goal machine with much more skill.
28 figsdad // May 27, 2008 at 11:12 AM
Gerrard7 i know m8 these were the lot that told me about emre signing for us and tuncay going to boro
they get news in before us about whats going on and tell me they even trasnslate the papers for me
also i work in a betting shop and the main man goes in there to gamble and give him tips for free footy gossip and discount bait.
i go in most weekends and nights as im a lazy arse and get pizzas about 4 times a week..
29 brad // May 27, 2008 at 11:15 AM
Its funny how people think that signing beckford is a joke but then go on to say were after veloso, turan , henry, etc, etc. Newcastle will not be signing any of these world class players and the fans need to realise kk will be making signings from the lower leagues.
I have posted that arda turan is in advanced talks with spurs 3 times now. I work for a paper that is quite disliked on this blog but can say this is fact. Spurs have offered 2 mill more than ashley is willing to pay.
If i am proved wrong i shall never grace this blog again.
30 Geordie Gerrard7 // May 27, 2008 at 11:33 AM
lol. i suppose we will not know though untill we do sign him
31 Geordie Nick // May 27, 2008 at 12:04 PM
callum- i totally agree we need to strengthen other parts, and wen i said we needed another striker i was not refering to beckford by the way, he is no where near good enough and i would be deeply disapointed if we did sign him
32 NUFCFAN // May 27, 2008 at 12:17 PM
no news again then!

The best striker in the play off finals was that young kid Windass, how about a 10m bid for him.
About as much sense as some the the rumours we are getting.
