Newcastle United have been reported interested in Olympique Marseilles striker Djibril Cisse.

Djibril Cisse - Newcastle interested in striker?

French sources are reporting that Newcastle have made an approach this week for Cisse, who has openly said he’d like to return to the Premier League.

Cisse played at Liverpool from 2004 until 2007, and he made 49 appearances for the Reds and scored 13 goals, during that time.

The Frenchman is also yet to be told whether his current club Marseilles sees him as part of their plans for next season.

He moved permanently there only last June after spending a year on loan at the club from Liverpool.

While we’ve never rated the Frenchman too highly he does have some abilities that Kevin may be able to use at Newcastle.

He’s very fast and has always had a good eye for hitting goals.

Cisse is still only 26 years old, and is 6′0″ tall, but we have no idea if the report that we’re interested in him has any truth in it.

Here’s Cisse playing record so far with goals scored:

Years Club App Goals

1998–2004 Auxerre 128 70
2004–2007 Liverpool 49 13
2006–2007→ Marseille (loan) 21 8
2007– Marseille 35 16

1998-2002 France Under-21 19 6
2002- France 35 9

In 233 first class club games, Cisse has scored 107 goals, which is not a bad average for a striker.

In his 54 international appearances for France and the French Under-21 side, he has scored 15 goals.

Comments very welcome.

Is he really the best we can do?? God help us.

  • 5 Gooderz // May 27, 2008 at 15:12

It might encourage Zog to stay but for the wrong reasons. They’d be discussing their prospective (or current) hairstyles.

    yeah sign him up

  • 9 NUFCFAN // May 27, 2008 at 15:23

Ed does it not get boring putting up rubbish articles all day every day about who we are signing?

  • 10 Angryman the Angry fan // May 27, 2008 at 15:25

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Scouse reject!! We dont want him here. His premiership goal scoring record was pap.
This bloke is NOT a proven premiership player!! He played here yes, but did he prove himself???????? IMO……….a resounding no!!
If we are loking at this type of player, we have no hope…………….He cannot, will not improve on waht we already have.

Come on MASH, buy yourself a Bentley, get yourself a Berbatov and someone to keep them Kompany!!

    That’ll do nicely ta………..

  • 11 The Entertainers // May 27, 2008 at 15:26

Well thats it fokes, i’m off to become a football reporter for a national newspaper. The secret is out. You take a quality / average player, think of any Premier league team who you know needs a player in that position, add together and hey presto you have a national story line…… Whats that you say, someone called Oliver has beaten me to it! Damn back to the old grind stone.

  • 12 Leasko // May 27, 2008 at 15:28

I cant see Keegan wasting money on a player that is no better than we already have. His goals record is average and the majority of them are in the french league which is the equivalent of our championship.

  • 13 faustino // May 27, 2008 at 15:30

Newsnow rather humoursly just associated us with the Echo’s ‘transfer rumours’ bit even though we’re not in it. Says it all really.

  • 14 Eric // May 27, 2008 at 15:32

He averages a goal every 2 games. He is another of these merry-go-round players. Club to club and never really part of anywhere. We do need a replacement for Viduka and really must move Smith onwards.

  • 15 Nev // May 27, 2008 at 15:35

hes fantastic and very VERY under-rated
keep in mind he did break his leg twice in 18months and managed to come back
the first time he broke his leg it was sickening to watch, very similar to eduardos this season
+ he was offically the “lord of frodsham”, a town both my nans live in :P

  • 16 micepie // May 27, 2008 at 15:35

There may be some truth in this one. I’d be pleased, though not at the expense of Martins!

  • 17 Ian // May 27, 2008 at 15:44

the best player we could in reality sign, what the goalscoring above fails to tell you is that he is more often than not a substitute and his goals are usually from the bench.

He is the fastest most agressive striker I have ever seen, everything he does is meant to happen, no luck involved. I have watched him when I can and he has lost none of his pace but has an older head on his shoulders than his Liverpool days where he was still very young.

Exactly what we need to partner Martins, if we had Cisse, Martins and Owen I think we would have the best complete strike force in the premiership, some of the other teams have good individuals but not a complete set like that.

He has won loads of silver, he scores best when needed to, which is even better, ie in cup games, important International games.

He is like Martins, will keep applying the pressure to the last second.

we can live in hope, this is the player i want to see, the games will be very exciting with him on the pitch. He brings a little controversy with writing on his t-shirts and daft hairstyles but not the sort of trouble Barton brings.

  • 18 Davies // May 27, 2008 at 15:47

Bah!!! More shitemongering from the press.

We had this one a couple of weeks ago didn’t we?

He could be good. From what I gather he’s been a bit of a benchman at most of his clubs, and hasn’t really had the benefit of consistent first team play. Unfortunately, that’s something that has to be earned.

Can’t see him fitting in to be honest.

  • 19 Leasko // May 27, 2008 at 15:50

Class players dont sit on the bench week in week out, enough said.

  • 20 Marat18 // May 27, 2008 at 15:51

omg, i thought after Barton’s story we don’t need any off-the-field problems anymore?
we had enough troublemakers in the past years.

tho, he was a cracking player in EPL. Well, I mean in FM 06 :-)

  • 21 Ian // May 27, 2008 at 15:54

  • 27 Ian // May 27, 2008 at 16:23

Pass this player at our peril.

He will be one of the top goalscorers in the premiership, he has been ALL of his career, why would that change now?

With us he would get more games.

  • 28 Stami // May 27, 2008 at 16:24

why do we want another one legged striker…! no thanks! i would rather take Diane or Gomis over Cisse!

  • 29 Alex // May 27, 2008 at 16:25

This is getting stupid, we seem to be after half the players in france over the last couple of weeks.Cisse would be a decent signing though, better than viduka.

  • 30 chuck // May 27, 2008 at 16:26

Fresh off the press. Its been rumored that Newcastle United are showing interest in North Korean striker Moo Goo Gi Pan and are allready in to the negotiation stage.
Although only twelve years old, he has been described as a phenomenon, scoring goals by the bucketfull.
It is hoped an initial offer of 20m. will be accepted.

  • 31 Geordie Gerrard7 // May 27, 2008 at 16:28

we are in for timbucktoyoannnn internatnational rabies aids, great player and at 48 his 30 million price tag shouldnt deter suitors

  • 32 Stami // May 27, 2008 at 16:32

to be honest, i can see KK spending a bit of money on ‘average’ players! We shouldnt be expecting any HUGE signings. all we need right now is a few players to cover our arse incase of injuries! we are not trying to crack the top 4 next season, just top 8, pref 6th, but 8 will do for now! so in closing, i could see us signing a player such as Cisse! we have 3 proven goal scorers up front, Cisse would be just a squad player!
lets not set ourselfs up for disappointment. You dont sprint your way up Mount Everest, its a slow climb!

  • 33 Leasko // May 27, 2008 at 16:36

It will be a quick descent aswell if we sign this shite.

  • 34 Ian // May 27, 2008 at 16:39

Cisse is only £7.5m which leaves us to spend money elsewhere while securing a striker that does score in the premiership, otherwise it is £11-13m for someone who may not.
This is a player who has a lot of pride and always wants to be top man, the type of man who knows what it is like to win silverware, that is what we need.

The report above isnt quite right, Marseille want to keep him, however they know that he is upset at his treatment earlier on in the season, the manager did an interview and stated he wanted to keep him, however Cisse had already said he wanted a return to the premiership, they will have to let him go if the asking price is met, so I took that as a clause like Martins had/has.

  • 35 Lew Davies // May 27, 2008 at 16:41

Stami - Trouble is NUFC cant sign a Gomis, or Dianne etc so probably this is as good as we can expect…… for now at least.
I think he could do a good job for us. He does have a lot of aggression and determination, and does score some good goals. But its the supply to the forwards that we desperatly need to sort out this close season. We are bereft of a decent midfield and have been for too long now. KK must sign at least 2 quality MF’s or we are going to struggle for another season. MA should get Turan at any cost IMO. He can provide the spark that is missing at the mo……..(crosses fingers and hopes :) )

Surely you don’t think Diane’s record is as good as Cisse’s? I’d prefer Cisse any day, Diane’s record pales in comparison…

  • 39 Cam_Toon // May 27, 2008 at 17:12

No No No… does no-one remember his last game at SJP for the Rats.

The Gate almost surged forward to lynch the rat.

No chance, no way, no thank you.

    NO.

  • 40 Marty // May 27, 2008 at 17:18

Forget the strikers for now, that is not where our problems are at the mo.If we don`t get a3 or 4 midfielders including 2 wingers we are gonna be battling it out for 16-17th place n that is just not feckin good enough.
MA is a good owner, has spent a load of cash gettin us outa trouble but we need 40-80 mill to see any changes next season anything less and it`s just takin the piss

  • 41 Graham // May 27, 2008 at 17:23

Cam_Toon - so what? if we refused to sign any players that NUFC fans had booed in the past we wouldn’t have signed many at all. David Batty, Johnathon Woodgate and Alana Shearer to name but 3.

I couldn’t care less what people thought of him at other clubs, if he can do a decent job (which he may well) and Keegan wants him then thats good enough for me.

  • 42 Taiwantoon // May 27, 2008 at 17:25

If he’s KK’s cup of tea, he is mine. Not many of us could do it better at identifing talents that is needed for the team than KK, includes the so called recruitment team.

  • 43 bessi // May 27, 2008 at 18:19

  • 45 toon4lyf // May 27, 2008 at 18:58

hes a good player but we dont need him we have martins and there similar players
we should get aimar and milito from zaragoza
arca too for cover defence and midfield and hopefully turan

  • 46 Ian // May 27, 2008 at 19:08

Dont forget we have two very injury prone strikers, plus when Martins didnt play we were awful.

Cisse carries the ball down the pitch like martins, even if we bought some more poor midfielders (I hope we dont) we would still get goals.

  • 47 gallowgate31 // May 27, 2008 at 19:14

Here’s something to cheer us all up………..

Tottenham fans hit in the pocket by huge increase in season ticket prices
Last updated at 09:51am on 27.05.08

Season ticket prices at Tottenham have shown the sharpest rise among the capital’s Premier League clubs.

Prices at White Hart Lane are up 10.7 per cent, the fourth-highest rise in the top flight. In comparison, Arsenal have raised their season ticket prices by 2.6 per cent, while at Chelsea there was no increase at all, according to research by the BBC.

HMMMMMMM…………. thats they’re ’spending spree’ payed for.

  • 48 Bill F // May 27, 2008 at 19:15

I agree with Ian, I have always been impressed with his skill and attitude when I have seen him play. Would be an assett to us and would become a crowd favourite very quickly.

I say buy. If he is actually available and on the R-Squad hit list. One of the better rumours.

  • 49 Cam_Toon // May 27, 2008 at 19:16

I understand what your saying… but we don’t need him. We need to replace the Duke and he is no target man.

Its our midfield that needs the work. We do not need a daft sulky pr**k like him.

  • 50 gallowgate31 // May 27, 2008 at 19:18

I would personally like to see the money spent in midfield, Arshavin, Turan…

    Bartons bail.

  • 51 daiv // May 27, 2008 at 19:25

One goal in four games as a striker at Liverpool. Rejected. Not good enough but it seems we are chasing rejects and journeymen players, so unfortunately there may be some truth in this story. Hope not. Are we really a big club? or just great support. There is a big difference.

  • 52 Ian // May 27, 2008 at 19:26

We will get no-one else who can score goals that regularly from anywhere, doesnt even matter for the money, there is no-one of that skill available who would consider Newcastle.

Look at his Champion league scoring ratio:
9 games 1 goal, 13 games 6 goals, 6 games 1 goal, that is impressive, International- 9games 3 goals, 2 games no goals, 4 games 2 goals, 10 games 4 goals, and he keeps coming in off the bench.

    2002 French 1st division topscorer
2003 Finaliste du trophee des champions
    2003 French cup winner
    2003 confederations cup winner
2004 french 1st division top scorer
    2005 Champions league winner
    2006 FA cup winner
    2007 french cup finals

Do I need to say more???

This is as good a striker as you can get in the World, if he plays regularly, gets that crowd behind him with the rest of the line up we could end up anywhere in the table, plus he leaves enough money to buy the midfielders we need so desperately

  • 53 Hammy // May 27, 2008 at 19:29

    gallowgate31……I wouldn’t gloat about Tottensham’s ticket prices…ours aren’t out yet!!

“that’s their spending spree paid for” I hope that is not going to apply to us…….

I hate these rumors, lets sign someone already!!!!!

  • 58 gallowgate31 // May 27, 2008 at 19:42

Yeah know what you mean, I had typed out a load of figures looking at where we had come since 1998 @ 356 quid as to last seasons 482 quid.

My main point was would you pay the same given that they have had a bad season too.

From what I hear the gallowgate is going up 30 quid unless you sign up for another two years. On one hand it’s a no brainer but I don’t want the club to know that I will still be there in 2 years.

I reckon the prices should be frozen for one more year then the increases could start depending on our relative success. It seems that spuds fans are putting they’re money up front.
I would prefer to see MA do the honourable thing or else get out of the stands.

  • 59 robertsa // May 27, 2008 at 19:45

No, please no! Never looked premiership quality before he broke his leg, and struggled. Although he has improved recently, and always played well in the french league, i really hope we don’ waste money on him. A point to emphasise how much worse the french league is than the prem? Boumsong plays for the champions. Yes, thats right, Boumsong.

On the french theme, does anyone else think it would be worth a bid for Nasri, who seems certain to leave? Around 10 mil is supposed to be a possible price, i would love to get him for that.

  • 70 reillers // May 28, 2008 at 0:08

It’s a tricky one to be honest. He’s supposed to be more then a wee bit of a arrogant fecker but if he can score like, if Keegan can get the best out of him then maybe, but I’ve never been a big fan. I think we’d be much better off trying to get someone like McGeady.

  • 71 keep oba // May 28, 2008 at 3:59

I dont know what to think of the guy. He breaks both legs horrribly, one especially, but yet he comes back in just a few months. It took Owen a long long time to fully return to form after just one break. So I dont know. I dont want him as a starter, and I dont think he would be happy with a reserve spot.

  • 72 Ian // May 28, 2008 at 8:46

They do appear to be in France, however their target appears to be Achille Emana, I think he plays at the same club as Cisse? I may be wrong.

If Cisse is in the premiership I want him on our side, it must be alongside Martins plus owen if poss, but definately Martins.

  • 73 Midjew // May 28, 2008 at 10:00

    Emana Plays for Toulouse.

    Cisse for Marseille

    Sorry Ian,

BUT they ARE both in france :-)

  • 74 Ian // May 28, 2008 at 13:29

    cheers midjew, I wasnt sure.

No mix up with Newcastle visiting a different player then!!

Nothing much happening anywhere at the moment.

Cisse has stated that he would decide if he will leave or not after euro 2008, so unless they are knocked out quickly I cant see any movement there for now.

Good thing about him he says it how it is.
