Newcastle Show Interest In Sidney Govou

May 27th, 2008 by Ed Harrison · 27 Comments

Yet another player that Newcastle are linked to today is French international right sided player Sidney Govou.

Sidney Govou - Lyon right sided midfielder

Sidney Govou was born in July, 1979 in Le Puy-en-Velay and is of Beninese descent. He plays for Lyon in the French League and for his country France.

Govou is a naturally attacking player but rarely plays as a striker, but he can play in multiple positions, including midfield and as an attacking right back or winger.

Govou has played 290 games for Lyon and has scored 53 goals for the French Champions. He has 31 caps for France and seven goals for his country and he turns 29 years-old in July.

Newcastle need some cover for Habib Beye at right back, and since Sidney can play in multiple positions, he could be a good acquisition for the Newcastle squad, and he is certainly experienced.

It’s also understood that Govou is interesting Portsmouth, who can of course offer European football, following their FA Cup Final victory over Cardiff.

We’ll keep tabs on Govou, but he can probably be added to those on the list at Newcastle, but exactly who are at the top of the list is an unknown right now.

Comments very welcome.

    boooooooooooorrrrrrrrriiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnngggg

  • 3 Graham // May 27, 2008 at 14:03

mmm, I’m not gonna worry about who we’re buying until we’ve actually bought them - there’s so much rubbish going round at the minute its not worth taking much interest in until theres concrete proof we are actually after the bloke or he’s standing on the touchline at SJP with Keegan sporting a cheesy grin

Geordie Gerrard 7 - your link is as close as we’ll get to seeing Veloso

  • 5 Eric // May 27, 2008 at 14:07

Agree with Graham. Wait and see (or not as the case may be). He would be a useful addition. Again we hear Portsmouth are interested. Have they got a scout camped out in the St James Park toilets? Am beginning to think we should stand with our backs to the wall or bar when Pompey is mentioned.

We have been linked to this lad the last 4 years and will be again next year.Another rumour, suprise suprise!

  • 9 Jim // May 27, 2008 at 14:13

    29 in July!

Which rumours do you believe. Personally, I think this isn’t worth it’s own article.

I would very much like to see a weekly round up of every name rumoured in and out with position, stats, age, country, club and a fashionable youtube link if possible.

I would also like the voting down the right to give us an opinion on recent stories such as Ashley selling up or signing wishlist from top 20 rumours.

    Just a thought, Ed.

Well, 29 year old GOUVU is a target but 28 year old DUNNE isn’t? c’mon!

  • 11 Gunnar/Iceland // May 27, 2008 at 14:16

He is a quality player. But this is just another rumour. Getting tired of this.

  • 12 Graeme // May 27, 2008 at 14:18

Jim, at this rate it will be easier to list the players we HAVEN’T been linked to. So far, its everyone and his aunties dog coming to the toon.

The stadium would need to be expanded to get them all in ffs!!!!

  • 16 sirjasontoon // May 27, 2008 at 14:23

These are words that bore me so I decided to add the meanings :

    “scouting” (pissing around the globe)

    “looking at”(reading shoot magazine)

    “interested”(until someone mentions hard cash)

    “approach”(hello it’s dennis here…player hangs up)

“weigh up a swoop”(fee was too heavy)

“magpies target”(whoops spurs signed him weeks ago)

    “on agenda”(what agenda)

“revive bid”(the last one was 8m out)

    “chasing”(your tail Dennis)

This is all I hear on the net now and it makes me want to smash my pc,not just in this window but the last few…we have 3/4 in our recruitment team surely one of them will do an honest days graft and sign someone that will interest us…PLEASE !!

  • 17 scottish mag // May 27, 2008 at 14:27

sessegnon would love to come to nufc

and nufc have made an approach for djibril cisse

all full of shit, i believe the toon are now on the slippery slope to nowhere, i think i prefered the excitement of the crook fat freddy, i just want to be proved wrong now.

  • 19 The Entertainers // May 27, 2008 at 14:33

Longshanks is right i think we get linked to this guy every window! Its about time the Ronnie Gill got a new sports writer, as this bloke Oliver has fallen out with every manager Newcastle have had and it appears no-one communicates with this guy any more. Most of his reports are a mile off. I always gave this paper more credibility than the others, not too sure these days.

  • 20 Davies // May 27, 2008 at 14:33

It’s all shite. I read some bloke’s blog a little while back saying that Newcastle had already been linked with 100 different “potential signings” since the last match.

Seems a reasonable figure given the constant prem rumour mill.

Still haven’t signed anyone though. Even Vokes preferred Wolves. Are we leppers?

  • 21 toonarmy08 // May 27, 2008 at 14:51

Chill out lads ,the season is only just finished and we saying that no players r coming in etc.We put up 16+mill up 4 modric but he decided to go to the spuds ,so it proves ashley will spend ,but i believe its actuallly persuading the player to come somewhere with NO euro football .KK is probably still on his hols ,so we need to stay calm ,the transfer win isnt open yet ,leave a couple of weeks and if nothing has happened by then ,then we start to worry!

  • 22 Bigchris // May 27, 2008 at 15:00

The only creditable story I’ve heard this summer, is the Cuellar one, and as it looks, its not exactly going to go our way.

If all this keeps up, I might quit football on Saturdays and watch Dr Who instead.

  • 23 Leo // May 27, 2008 at 15:03

seems like the journo’s have no imagination good player but we are linked with him every window.

didnt he almost sign under bobby then freddie scuppered the deal?

also i like the fact ed puts every story about who we might be interested in, it means that we can all discuss them seperatly and have no confusion

  • 24 Bigchris // May 27, 2008 at 15:13

Just heard that Newcastle have made a bid of Smith + 3 million and must step out of the race to sign Riise for Cuellar.

  • 25 Joe Aussie // May 27, 2008 at 15:22

Does everyone think that KK and his team are sitting on their arses watching the world go by! When some dipstick in the press claims that we are trying for this player or that and then nothing transpires the negative comments start and there is all this pessimism. Most of these stories are speculation and bollox! KK has been quoted as saying he will play his cards close to his chest regarding transfer targets and that is what he is doing. Chill out guys a have a bit of patience and we all might be pleasantly surprised.

  • 26 Jamie G // May 27, 2008 at 20:36

would be a great singing. top french player.

  • 27 clinta // May 28, 2008 at 2:30
