Reading Raid Could Be On The Cards

May 29th, 2008 by Ed Harrison · 82 Comments

Newcastle could do a lot worse than raid Reading for some of their players who will definitely be leaving this summer.

nicky-shorey-23.jpg

Nicky Shorey - one Reading player who would be excellent acquisition

Reading manager Steve Coppell has been told he must sell some of his players to raise funds for next season, and there are a number of rival clubs to Newcastle, just waiting to pounce.

Sunderland are said to be preparing a £10M double bid for Stephen Hunt and Kevin Doyle, and Aston Villa are said to also fancy Doyle.

Newcastle’s boss Kevin Keegan is said to like striker Dave Kitson, but we doubt that he would be a good acquisition since Reading found it hard to score any goals in their final run-in and it cost them their premiership place.

And Nicky Shorey wants to leave after already rejecting a new contract, and reports suggest he could be a bargain at under £3M.

West Ham and Newcastle are said to be favorites to get Shorey, although we know of no solid bid from Newcastle yet, but what are we waiting for?

James Harper is also said to be interesting Newcastle, although it appears that Middlesbrough are favorites to sign the midfielder.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

reading raid is better than not signing any player during this summer..

  • 3 Marat18 // May 29, 2008 at 12:00

    it could be worse

  • 4 iain // May 29, 2008 at 12:00

we could do worse than replace shola with doyle or kitson but not much worsde.

Im not READING anything into this!!!!!!!!!!!

West Ham and Newcastle are said to be favorites to get Shorey, although we know of no solid bid from Newcastle yet, but what are we waiting for?…this word “what are we waiting for?” i think that we are waiting to see how other team will get players that can be ours

The only plyer i want of those is Kitson, get Torosidis who plays LB/RB/DM instead of Shorey.

“Newcastle’s boss Kevin Keegan is said to like striker Dave Kitson, but we doubt that he would be a good acquisition since Reading found it hard to score any goals in their final run-in and it cost them their premiership place.”

A bit unfair Ed. Our midfield managed to make two of the worlds most exciting strikers look pants when they weren’t playing well

  • 11 derekm // May 29, 2008 at 12:18

all the top players agents will not do business before euro 08 in case their clients have a stormer and can get a better deal accordingly. Modric was an exception - possibly because his club needed the deal done urgently for their own funding, and anyway he wanted a london club. What I am saying is that storey is nothing special, whether we like it or not we will be behind the big four in any pecking queue and it is down to wisey and his friends to find a bargain or very good youngster. Wait and buy quality available after the euros.

  • 12 ToonIndonesia // May 29, 2008 at 12:19

    let’s not forget leroy lita.
    he’s got talent.

  • 13 mark // May 29, 2008 at 12:21

To finish in the top 4 and challenge for the title i think we should sign:

    Robinson
    Hutton
    Woodgate
    King
    Bale
    Lennon
    Modric
    Jenas
    Capel
    Keane
    Berbatov

    subs:
    Harper
    Chimbonda
    Taylor
    Huddlestone
    Dos santos
    Bent
    Owen

A terrific first team with a strong subs bench. This team would take the premiership by storm if we could only get a more tactically aware manager than kk.

  • 14 Beattie // May 29, 2008 at 12:28

Shorey would be a good signing IMO, would help out with Enrique’s development

I’d expect (hope) that we’d make better quality signings than all the others mentioned though

  • 15 Davies // May 29, 2008 at 12:28

Not really interested in any of their players to be honest.

  • 16 seetow // May 29, 2008 at 12:28

i’d prefer doyle to lita actually.. he’s more consistent imo :D

  • 17 Charlie Bucket // May 29, 2008 at 12:31

Wonder if Wise and Keegan are still bickering behind the scenes.

  • 18 Bill F // May 29, 2008 at 12:34

Charlie is that true, on what are you basing that comment. The official line is that all is sweetness and love. Did wake me up though.

  • 19 ELFER // May 29, 2008 at 12:41

Do not waste money! If shorey joins us for a fee around 3M ok, but no others should be our targets!

We have a small squad yes, but why shouldn’t we just add shorey, GOMIS and EMANA and unload SMITH? Perhaps we can also let DUFF go and replace him adequately…but after that I think we are fine (and should give also our youngsters a try)!

  • 20 Eric // May 29, 2008 at 12:42

What are we waiting for? Obvious - we are waiting to see what Spurs and Portsmouth do. Not forgetting Wigan and Villa.

  • 21 Tom_Toon // May 29, 2008 at 12:43

    Dont like Emana.

  • 22 Nev // May 29, 2008 at 12:51

i rekon McGeady would be a fantasic buy … similar to modric and turan but british
what everyone else make of him ?

  • 23 Marty // May 29, 2008 at 12:52

We could do a whole lot worse than DOYLE,didn`t have a grt season this yr but is a fine striker n is used to the PL.
Buy Shorey right away we need all we can of quality…our team looks thin as it is.

  • 24 Marty // May 29, 2008 at 12:55

HUNT is also a grt player and i reckon we should stay away from buying more AFRICANS as it`ll only cause disruptions when they go to ACN,We have already 4 that leave n thats more than enough.WHAT YAZ THINK?

  • 25 Tom_Toon // May 29, 2008 at 12:57

The acn is only every 2 yeats and beye has reied from international football and i think geremi will soon so its not that bad.

  • 26 robertsa // May 29, 2008 at 13:11

doyle kitson shorey only decent ones and they arent better than owen martins and enrique
much rather have cisse riise gomis

  • 30 robertsa // May 29, 2008 at 13:25

you will probably hate these ideas but shuan maloney is available from aston villa.
    sibierski is available from wigan.

  • 31 broon ale // May 29, 2008 at 13:29

robertsa! the transfer window isnt open yet. you wont see reading players or anyone else arriving untill it does. Its annoying that we have people (the ed included) asking what we are waiting for in the transfer market. Its obvious why. THE TRANSFER WINDOW IS NOT OPEN. no other club is signing players. Modric has signed a provisonal contract with spurs before anyone uses that example against me.
this forum is serving to wind every one up with the constant speculation linking us with one player after the next. it wont happen untill mid to end of june

Mark, that tam you mentioned is indeed S*ite!!
We battered the majority of them last season, and like wise we will batter them again next season. Spuds are even bigger underachievers than NUFC, 4-1 tells me that KK is a more astute tactician than Juanky Rams arse!!

  • 59 John // May 29, 2008 at 14:04

    LOL ….

  • 60 Ruud boy // May 29, 2008 at 14:15

The only way we are going to become a better team is by sign better player than we already have. We have better players than Doyle, so why not get Gomez, who is better than players we already have.

  • 61 Mac // May 29, 2008 at 14:30

I would only take Hunt from Reading i think he is a good player, vastly under rated. I’m not convinced on Shorey,he gets 1 England cap and he thinks he’s better than he actually is.

Veleso,Metzelder,Turan,Bridge and possibly Emana. That would do me o sod it throw Gomez in there for good measure.

  • 62 mark // May 29, 2008 at 14:35

tOTALLY AGREE RUUD BOY.PLEASE SEE POST 13

  • 63 benn.. // May 29, 2008 at 14:58

living in reading i have seen reading play a few times over the last few seasons when im offered a ticket.. i think shorey would be quality.. harper and kitson would be good for newcastle. but i think leroy lita..would be quality player but is a bit like barton person like.. [ he does things he regreats] but he would still be awesome..shane long young striker.. will be awesome and they have a future star im sure in james henry.

  • 64 Eric // May 29, 2008 at 15:18

Know this is for reading players… But another team that relegated, Birmingham, there swedish player Sebastian Larsson.. What you guys think? Imo he is realy good, big chans he´t taking Ljungbergs place in the swedish team for euro now and is only 22 years old.

Some newspapers here in sweden are talking about him today, and say we are intrested in him, one reporter even asked him about Newcastle, and he just answered big club, and whant to stay in the PL now when I have got there…

What you neutral suporters think of him, I don´t think he is the next big think in EPL, but would realy like to get a country man to Newcastle =)

  • 65 Ben_BKK // May 29, 2008 at 15:39

Yeah I think Larsson is a good player.
Also agree with the comment about us should get Torosidis, he looks quality.
Both of those are 22, so would be good for the future, though they don’t need as much development.

  • 66 Marty // May 29, 2008 at 16:10

I reckon Larsson is a quality player too.Could probably get him on the cheap.
BROON ALE-Why don`t we get some of these players on Provisional Contracts then before their worth goes up n b4 other teams nab em??

  • 67 luke // May 29, 2008 at 16:28

    Any news on Turan today?

  • 68 Jonny // May 29, 2008 at 17:00

    When does transfer window open?

  • 69 Tooner // May 29, 2008 at 17:07

Window officially opens July 1, but deals can be struck now that will go through on 1 July.

  • 70 SCOTOON // May 29, 2008 at 17:07

READING MAN! maybe their u19 kid for the reserves but go for quality man like Metzelder, Cuellar and them 2 signings we should have already got done like who? GOMIS AND TURAN! weve already let Modric go so lets break MA’s piggy bank and get wishful thinking and go after world class players like huntleraar and gomez! maybe even ronaldinho

Note: Lots of Fs removed form above comment - Ed H.

  • 71 Ian // May 29, 2008 at 17:55

Larsson made a good midfielder, that could be a good idea if he is cheap enough. That is as an additional central midfielder, he has also played on the wing, but central midfield may be better for us, we wouldnt want him in a striking role.

  • 72 Kiwi Toon // May 29, 2008 at 20:43

    MARK:

Isnt this just the spurs team?
Did they finish in the top 4 and take the premiership by storm??????

  • 73 Reading Mag // May 29, 2008 at 20:55

All Readings players lost it towards the endof the season. Shorey and Lita and poss …Hunt.
No - Kitson and Harper is carp.

Might get them on the cheap though

  • 74 leavy // May 29, 2008 at 20:59

    i would love larson
    with emre always injured
geremi being typicaly shit adn barton in some jail i would love larson he wouldnt cost much and his wages would hardly be high in comparison with the bartons etc who presumably will be getting paid to do sweet f.a

  • 75 reillers // May 29, 2008 at 22:33

Doyle and wee Hunt would be fabulous buys.
Hunt is a worker and a fabulous mid, he’s so underrated and not only does he give you 110% when he’s on the pitch he’s a massive impact sub as well as that.
Doyle hadn’t a great season with Reading, but he’s a very good player. He was played out on the wing a fair bit and it’s not his favorite position, but he played well there for Cork City. So he’s flexible enough if we need him to be.
He did very well against Columbia tonight. Ran his socks off.
I wouldn’t mind either of those lads coming to Newcastle at all.

Nev…….Mc Geady is poor. Extremely overated and will not do much if he moves to the premiership IMO. I’ve watched him several times last season and been very disappointed and I think he’s talked up in Scotland.

To compare him to Modric is crazy!!

  • 77 toon4lyf // May 29, 2008 at 23:13

mgeady is klass so skillful good passer

  • 78 reillers // May 29, 2008 at 23:47

Nobby’s Dad, I would have agreed with you about McGeady last season but like, this season, wee McGeady has been fantastic. Has come on so much this season. Mistakes he made then he doesn’t now, he looks up more, has set up and scored a lot of Celtics goals this season and was named Scotland’s player of the year. He’s been fantastic this season. Has worked his socks off in the pre season training and it’s really, really showed. Would make a great buy for any club.

  • 79 Oga // May 30, 2008 at 0:14

Reading finished in the bottom 3 for a reason.

If we are to improve we need to sign better players.

“we should stay away from buying more AFRICANS as it`ll only cause disruptions when they go to ACN,We have already 4 that leave n thats more than enough.WHAT YAZ THINK?”

I keep reading this rubbish on this blog, so I will end the argument with a few facts.

    - The most recent African Nations Cup took place in 2008
    - In the Premiership Portsmouth accommodate the most Africans, closely followed by Arsenal
    - Portsmouth won the 2nd biggest trophy in English football in 2008
    - Arsenal were on course to win the league long after the ACN took place.

    Now stop with this nonsense!

  • 80 Leo // May 30, 2008 at 1:10

reillers i find it highly amusing that you only think irish players would be fantastic buys for newcastle. not knocking ya mate i probably do the same thing without knowing it.

when i read ur comments when i get the emails i read the comments alone and sometimes note who wrote them depending on certain criteria such as well written or when someone says something quite outspoken, but ive got to the point where i know its you written certain bits before looking lol

  • 81 lee // May 30, 2008 at 9:58

i agree with broon ale there are more impotrtant issues at stake such as animal rights i think that because newcastle fans are such decent caring people that we should go to sunderland and save roy keanes dog or at least phone the r.s.p.c.a

  • 82 irish_al // May 30, 2008 at 10:54

just to clarify the situation with the transfer window being open, it doesn’t need to be open to sign a player, it needs to be open to register a player with the FA before they are eligable to play, you can sign players legitemately before then but they wont be able to represent the club in any competition

none the less there is a good while left to sign players, the squad wont start to return for preseason training until around the last week of june
