Harper – Keegan Lit The Place Up When He Arrived

Steve Harper played a great part in Newcastle’s move up the table once Kevin Keegan had steadied the ship by March, and he today tells the Newcastle Journal he hopes that Kevin will be given adequate funds to bring in some top new players.

Steve Harper – hopes Kevin gets financial backing

Harper today acknowledges the massive impact Kevin had on the Newcastle players when he arrived back at the club last January.

Steve told the Newcastle Journal troday:

“His impact after taking over was massive. You couldn’t put into words how big his impact was,”

“We couldn’t have been any lower when he came in and he just lit the place up, as he does.”

“Now we just hope he gets the backing over the summer to bring in the players and help get us back where we belong in the top half of the Premier League.”

We’re almost into June and the club have yet to make any major move into the transfer market.

Of course Euro 2008 starts on June 7th, and any player Newcastle are interested in, who is playing in that tournament, will now probably need to wait until Euro 2008 completes.

But there are other players Newcastle are said to be interested in, and we have to admit to some surprise that we seem to be moving at a pedestrian pace in the market this summer.

As usual we’ve been linked with a whole host of players, including some teenagers for the future, so that’s good, but we have yet to make any real substantial offers for some of these players.

Players we have an interest in have included Galatasaray winger Arda Turan, Le Mans midfielder Stephane Sessegnon and St. Etienne striker Bafe Gomis, but the club is yet to make any firm bid for any of these players.

And we also have made little progress with the contracts of Steven Yaylor and Michael Owen too, which to us is disappointing, after Kevin Keegan has specifically asked the club to quickly tie up these two players.

So there doesn’t seem to be an air of urgency at the Tyneside club this summer, that’s for sure.

But, of course, we still have to remember we have lots of time before August 31st, although we’d like to see the players arrive early in the summer so they can get a full pre-season under Keegan and his coaching staff.

What do you think.

Dos Santos does not have the physical atributes to play in this league.

As for Dunne, he’s a vastly overrated player IMO. Cuellar would be a far better signing to shore up the defensive stocks.

Not surprised really. It’s in line with their “buy whoever Newcastle are looking at” policy.

It’s about time Dennis the menace was got shot of. It seems to me that Keegan attracted players to Newcastle himself in the good old days, but he’s pretty much out of the loop now. He just gives Wisey his list and Wisey goes and fumbles the deal.

Seriously, Dennis Wise in a suit? He looks like something of Grange Hill. Would you take a job offer from him seriously?

He has none of the charisma Keegan has, and I think we will lose out on players because of it.

    I hope I’m wrong, but I don’t think I am.

Tough times ahead. Let’s just hope that whoever we have left in our team by the end of the close season can kick a ball.

shame about dos, we could have done with him.

Is Wise doing the face to face stuff? i thought the foreign fella would be doing that?

RE:DAVIES Maybe newcastle are looking at the same players as spurs but not getting there asses into gear. Thats 3 quality players they have bought in now with capel apparently to follow. Wise has bought in nobody. I reckon they probably are in advanced talks with players but they wont be the big names everyone wants.

it does seem very suspicious that tottenham have signed all the players we are linked with

this could be simply the fact the papers get wind of who spurs are going to sign and then link them with newcastle knowing the fact when tottenham sign them it will anoy us geordies

or more sinister it could be that we have a mole ‘wise’ and tottenham are purposefully doing the whole buy anyone we want thing.

Perhaps we could get Jasper Carrot in to sort out the mole problem.

Its great news if spurs get Dunne they will be even easier to beat next year.

I havn’t been impressed by Anton Ferdinand, wasn’t he one of the players found “borrowing” from dressing rooms.
