There is more to the story that we broke last night that Emre may be leaving Newcastle United.

Emre - has he left Newcastle?
As we mentioned last night reports in Istanbul say that Newcastle are parting company with Emre and have agreed a fee with Turkish club Fenerbahce.
The Turkish star is currently preparing for Euro 2008 in Austria and Switzerland but now a statement has appeared on Fenerbahce’s official wesbite which says:
“Fenerbahce reached an agreement with Newcastle United in order to sign the Turkish superstar Emre Belozoglu.”
“Emre is one of the most accomplished Turkish players of all time, and also a member of the national team, which he helped to a third-place finish at the World Cup 2002.”
The player arrived on Tyneside during the Graeme Souness era from Inter Milan for £3.8M and signed a 5 year contract at that time.
The transfer fee we reported last night is said to be around £5.5M.
The fact that there is a statement on the Turkish club’s web-site would suggest the deal may indeed be true, but we’ll need to wait for news from the Newcastle club on this one.
This has now gone too far and we would expect some kind of statement from the Newcastle club on this today.
The last thing we want to do right now is to get rid of some of our good players, and losing Emre would not be good in our view.
What do you think?
Comments welcome.

Would be a shame because we need more like him - creative and very exciting to watch. And 5.5 is quite a low fee if you ask me!

I aint get on no plane, fool!

If it is true, it’s a good way of lowering the wage bill. The money being discussed is surprisingly high, he constantly seemed to be injured or suspended and I don’t think we saw the best of him.
It’s still a bit surprising, given that Barton will be unavailable for quite a while, maybe we’re about to announce a new midfield signing soon.
4 J-Rock // May 31, 2008 at 10:15
This must be good news from NUFC’s point of view - a good fee for a player who hardly plays, is on massive wages and physically doesnt seem up to the rough and tumble of the Premiership… surely there are plenty of cost-efficient alternatives?
5 Chris F // May 31, 2008 at 10:16
i hope it is true, he’s brought nothing to the club since he came except an extensive injury record.
how many games did he even play last season?
Marcelino by another name.
6 Keep Milner // May 31, 2008 at 10:16
I think 5.5 mill is a good deal for Emre. People keep banging on about his creativity, but he’s never fit…what use is that?
7 Nev // May 31, 2008 at 10:18
hes very good … but with all the “niggling” injuries hes had hes only played half a season at most during his 3 years!
as long as we sign a replacement quickly i wont mind it
8 Chris F // May 31, 2008 at 10:19
well no, we don’t need a replacement for emre, we could actually do with buying someone who might play more than 1 game in 10.
9 Frankieboy // May 31, 2008 at 10:20
Can’t believe anyone would want to see him leave.
Injuries apart he has been a success when selected.
We will not move forward by letting our most (or only) creative midfielder go.
I just hope it’s all papertalk.
10 ELFER // May 31, 2008 at 10:21
good news, becouse he was rather trouble than help for us. But still wish him all the best! Exciting is, that this makes space for EMANA
11 FaroeMagpie // May 31, 2008 at 10:23
let him go. He never gave us his service and never showed his class (that he’s supposed to have). Great for the wage bill. Let’s get Appiah and Diego in the midfield. N’Zogbia can even play in midfield i reckon. But we need players and great players at that
12 Davies // May 31, 2008 at 10:25
Shame, I like the little fella, but if he’s gone there’s no point complaining.
He scored some good goals for us, and was always good with assists (this season’s second Boro game when he set Owen up twice springs to mind), but he does spend way too much time on the sick. He’s probably eligible for benefits by now.
Let’s just hope we have at least one creative midfielder coming in.
Did anybody else look at the Achille Emana footage on youtube? His goals remind me of Tino!!
13 Frankieboy // May 31, 2008 at 10:25
How can people say he was trouble.
Injury prone yeh, but never trouble.
When selected he always gave 100%
14 Bill F // May 31, 2008 at 10:26
Its all part of the great Summer transfer show, most of the teams will lose some and gain some. Although I can’t see any entries in the plus column for us as yet or even on the horizon. Still there is always the last day drama to look forward to, AGAIN!!!
15 zhun // May 31, 2008 at 10:28
where’s his replacement?
16 ToonKing // May 31, 2008 at 10:30
i know he hasn’t played much for us but the problem is that every time he did you could see the potential in him, he wasn’t like Planka Ameobi.
my brain says good riddance but my heart is disappointed that he’s leaving.
17 Frankieboy // May 31, 2008 at 10:31
The last day drama also means it takes a few months into season to settle in which is a disadvantage, but that seems to be the way the club always does things.
18 Frankieboy // May 31, 2008 at 10:33
Bang goes the chance of signing Turan
19 bailey // May 31, 2008 at 10:35
How can someone who hardly ever played be a big miss. Even when he did play everytime an opposing player went near him he went down clutching whatever and mouthing off accordingly and you could practically guarantee he would be “injured”for the following games.
20 joe // May 31, 2008 at 10:36
In normal circumstances i wouldn’t be too disappointed but we have a tiny squad. This reeks of “sell before you can buy”. I hope i’m wrong but didn’t KK say that there would be very few departures and only a few comng in? Now we have seen 5 leave the club - mostly were poor anyway but now we have a squad that would reaqlly struggle. If Duff is leaving - and he probably is - then it’s even worse. I’m happy to see a few go but we haven’t signed a single player. With Owen and Taylor not signing deals yet then we could be playing the academy team!!!
21 ELFER // May 31, 2008 at 10:38
Absolutely, he did not figure in KK’s team and I might say also not in KK’s future plans. Good way of lighten the wage structure.
If now EMANA comes in this is a fantastic improvement and he is far better than EMRE ever would have been!
22 toon4lyf // May 31, 2008 at 10:44
emre is a genuis our best player by miles amazing football brain he was playing with shyt last year and still sumhow won us a few matches single handedly we wont sell him

24 euanpolo // May 31, 2008 at 10:57
Emre is our best midfielder and we’d be mad to sell him, we’ve haven’t got enough midfielders as it is. It might just be Fenerbahce or an agent getting carried away. I haven’t seen anything on skysports etc.
25 Frankieboy // May 31, 2008 at 10:57
Spot on about Emre Toon4lyf.
I am surprised by the no. of negative comments about him

27 Geordie Nick // May 31, 2008 at 10:59

28 toon4lyf // May 31, 2008 at 11:01
he plays deep
29 Frankieboy // May 31, 2008 at 11:03
If he had not had the injuries he would of been a regular, even under KK.
30 Soren // May 31, 2008 at 11:10
Sad if Emre goes. He is probably our best player at set pieces, and can really create a spark in our midfield. I can understand people who says he injured far too much, but I just love the little fella and would be very sad to see him go. We finally got a manager who wants to play beautiful football which would suit Emre great. Hope it isnt true!
31 robertsa // May 31, 2008 at 11:16
so what will happen about turan?
32 Geordie Nick // May 31, 2008 at 11:18
FRANKIEBOY-THE KEY WORD BEING ‘IF’,THING IS HE HAS HAD THE INJURIES AND HE HASNT PLAYED SIMPLE AS THT, TO ME 58 APPS IN 3 YRS IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH YOU PRACTICALLY MAKE THT MANY APPS IN ONE SEASON
33 scott9 // May 31, 2008 at 11:18
why would losing emre not be good hes not worth been with us he is constently geting injured its stupid hes not worth havin in my opinion i agree with selling him and buying a replacement

Geordie Nick,
IF he leaves it will be a bad decision.
IF he stays clear of injuries he will be a success wherever he plays.

last few year, when souness still in charge, i still remember the freekick he take, was bring us a meanful win over sunderland with 3-2, his goal was excited me, everytime he play, he give his 100%, that no doubt. just sad to see he go, but if any replacement which better than him, then let him go. will thanks a lot for him.
39 Robert from Serbia // May 31, 2008 at 12:15
Emre has left
40 Sav // May 31, 2008 at 12:24
I like Emre.
But he doesn’t play enough and this is s good time to sell him with Turkey in the Euro Finals. I f we got that sort of money for him I think it is probably a good deal as long as we invest it all in a fitter, taller midfielder who is going to last the season. You’d get Bullard or Diarra for that and I’d be happy with that exchange.
41 scottish mag // May 31, 2008 at 12:32
if we have let him go, then we must have a replacement set up as we are already short in midfield, preferably a box to box CM who can guarentee 5-10 goals a season
42 Lew Davies // May 31, 2008 at 12:35
Maybe we will let emre go, then sign turan……who will get injured in the euros (cruciate ?) and be out for 8 months
…..do you see a pattern forming here? or is it just me…
43 b3v // May 31, 2008 at 12:37
according to the bbc website the fee is close to £8mil so I for one think thats a great deal for an injury prone player.
44 This Too will pass // May 31, 2008 at 12:39
A really good deal if it is for £5.5M. he never really delivered; injured too often; not enough goals; will probably only be remembred for 1 great goal against the Mackems, and will soon be forgotten; never lived up to the “Maradona of the Bosphorous “tag and 5 goals in 58 appearances is not good enough for a ‘creative midfielder’
45 T.O.Mag // May 31, 2008 at 12:46
Should of sold him ages ago, massive wages (60k+), always injured and never set the premiership alight.
Diego, Arshavin to replace him?
46 Bill F // May 31, 2008 at 12:57
Leo very good Lol.
You can add MO to that as well.
47 Geordie Gerrard7 // May 31, 2008 at 13:11
even though im gutted about emre, this is where the fun begins fella’s
48 Hamas // May 31, 2008 at 13:18
Lew Davies - Don’t act so deluded, Turan would have only considered us if Emre was here. He can do much better than us right now and I don’t think he’ll give us a second look now.
Nevermind then, on to other targets.
49 Luke // May 31, 2008 at 13:22
Gutted.
And more worryingly not a single sign of bringing in a quality replacement. Everything is pointing towards a tiny transfer pot. I think this is less to do with the player than in bringing down the wage bill.
But to be fair — we can’t sustain the fourth biggest wage bill in the league with our results.
50 Oga // May 31, 2008 at 13:24
toon4lyf, heres a few reasons why your team wont work:
1. Emre has gone and Dunne is going to the Spuds
2. You cannot play a diamond formation with wingers.
3. Emre is not even a holding midfielder, or deep playmaker.
4. You have 4 attacking midfielders playing in a diamond formation. A formation which has never worked in the Premiership.
5. Your team lacks height and strength.
51 Ashton // May 31, 2008 at 13:39
We are doomed !
i think we will lose our best players because of the wage bills bollocks !
52 liamtoonbirchy // May 31, 2008 at 13:57
on bbc sport it says the fee maybe 8m so we can get emana and huddlestone with that income

i have to agree with those saying emre wont be missed, granted hes a fantastically talented football player, but he has a touch of marchelino about him, has he ever played 10 full consecutive 90 mins for us ??? i would seriously doubt it.
emana will be a good replacement imo, but we are still short a cm even if he comes in. although signing a lw and getting shot of duff would negate that a bit if the zog stayed.
part of me will be sad to see emre go but its that kind of attidtude that has landed us in this mess as we have been too nice at times always giving players another chance, then another and so one.
56 tam toon // May 31, 2008 at 15:22
If turan would only sign because Emre was here, then he is not for us. What a shit reason not to sign. Let us just see what happens, he may actually want to sign for NUFC and for Kevin Keegan. Thats what we want. Not someone who wants to sign for us cos his lazy arsed little hero, who played 8 games last season was here. Good riddance now take Smith,Duff, Ameobi,Rozehnal and Barton with you. What do you think Tom Toon?
57 GSfan // May 31, 2008 at 15:32
The fee isn’t 8m pounds. That value is probably how much it will cost Fenerbahce in total (including the cash that’s gonna be paid to Emre himself).
The deal hasn’t gone through yet but his agent just said talks with the player have begun and that these talks should take no more than 3 days. It’s just a shame Fenerbahce had to do this while the national team is preparing for the Euros. Those ****s have always been selfish.
Too bad Emre couldn’t really bother to play cuz of his ‘injuries’ for you guys. I bet he’s going to play with 110% effort at Fenerbahce and never get injured, just like he does for the national team. For those who want Appiah though… if you think Emre was injury prone you would be absolutely delighted with Appiah. He played about 2 games for the whole season because he was “injured”. He just sat there leeching from Fenerbahce and Maldonado was brought as his replacement.
These guys announced a transfer budger of about 65m euros for the new season. So it’s no wonder they would be willing to pay several million euros just for Emre. (He won’t be taking up a foreign player’s slot either).
I’m sure Emre won’t be that much of a loss for you guys. Maybe I’m just saying that because I’m rather disappointed in him, I dunno.
58 micepie // May 31, 2008 at 16:03
Hopefully it could be a similar situation to the Solano/Beye out/in last year under BSA, that KK would only sanction Emre leaving if we have a replacement already (such as Emana). I would think KK is planning to buy at least two mf and though I like Emre we do need a shake up in mf.
Like Rob Lee says though, we should be prepping a few offers to bring in players purty darn soon!
59 joe // May 31, 2008 at 18:03
It’s on NUFC official site now. Emre gone by the looks of things. Wouldn’t be surprised if there was late interest from Galatasary though. I just hope that the money will see us try and sign someone.
