Nicky Butt A Key Player For Keegan

Nicky Butt has come into his own at Newcastle these past two seasons, and we see no reason why he will not stay at the club past his current contract, which runs out next summer.

Nicky Butt – key player for Newcastle next season

Nicky talked to the Evening Chronicle today and is obviously looking forward to next season:

“We’ve got to get as high up the table as we can.”

“I know we say that every year.”

“But if you add a few quality players to our squad, we’ve got as good a chance as anybody as getting near the top four.”

“And that has to be our aim next year.”

There’s no doubt that Nicky played very well once Kevin Keegan arrived back, and it’s obvious the new manager has enormous faith in the former Manchester United player, who put in some sterling performances during Newcastle’s 7 game unbeaten run, during the end of the season.

Along with Michael Owen, Habib Beye and one or two others, Nicky will no doubt we one of Kevin’s main leaders on the field next season.

Nicky is in great shape and can cover an awful lot of ground in the game he plays, and he seems to have found a new spirit under Kevin Keegan as he continued:

“Kevin has changed the environment a lot here.”

“We do more off-the-cuff type of things.”

“The manager has an ‘enjoy your football’ type of attitude, but is also very professional.”

Butt has already hinted that all things being equal he would love to stay past next summer at the club.

And another season like he’s has these last two campaigns, and there’s no doubt his contract will be extended on Tyneside.

He has one more season left. If we extend his contract again then we are not serious about improving.

    He cannot pass!!!

Joey Clarton in jail and Emre gone it pretty much looks like Butt HAS to be a key player next season.

@Faustino, there will be a few new midfielders coming in this summer mate, sooner rather than later though!

He had a brilliant ending to the season but was AWFUL for the first two thirds. Let’s not get too carried away people.

He can’t pass, moves like a tortoise, and for the majority of the season he was rubbish. Back up for this coming season, then let him go.

You seem to have short memories.

We have to keep him beacause:

    1. Since coming back from Brum he has been our most influential midfield player.

    2. Just like most players under BSA he was often poor but has improved immensely since KK arrived.

    3. We don’t have an abundance of midfielders just now, let alone one who can anticipate & tackle like he does!

    4. We need his experience in our team.

I agree with Gazza, for me Butt was the player of the season. I know Beye and Owen came good at the end, but Nicky does so much work that can go unnoticed. We need Butt for his experience and TALENT. I know that from time to time his passing can be suspect, but is this because hes trying to do things the other ‘forward’ players should be doing. BUTT is a winner, if he can keep it simple, hes one of the best around, a real destroyer. However we need creative players around him.
