There have been a few reports over the weekend, that Kevin Keegan may want to bring Everton’s midfielder Arteta to St. James’ Park.
Mikel Arteta – great midfielder and excellent acquisition by David Moyes
The problem we have with the story is we cannot see why Mikel would ever leave Everton.
The Liverpool club have been doing extremely well these last couple of seasons, under Scottish manager David Moyes, so why would he want to leave for Newcastle?
At least Arteta is getting regular European Football with Everton, and they are probably the best based team to break into the top four eventually.
There were some rumors last month that Arteta may want to leave Everton, but that’s been patched up with manager David Moyes, and as far as we know Mikel is happy at Everton.
However, that’s not to say we don’t think Arteta would be a great capture for the Magpies, if we could pull it off, since we think he’s a first-class footballer.
The Spaniard was born in the Spanish Resort town of San Sebastion, and started out with Barcelona in 2000. He played for a couple of seasons on loan at PSG (31 appearances 2 goals).
He then moved to Glasgow Rangers in 2002, where he stayed for two seasons and played 50 times for the Glasgow club, scoring 12 goals.
Mikel moved back to Spain with Real Sociedad in 2004, for a season, before joining Everton in 2005, initially on loan.
He’s not a full Spanish International, rather surprisingly, but he did play 7 times for the Spanish Under-21 side, and has so far played 92 times for Everton, scoring 11 goals.
Keegan has said he would like to buy proven Premiership players and Mikel certainly fits the bill.
But we’d be very surprised if anything comes of this, even if it’s true that Keegan likes the player.

if we put a good bid on the table Feyenoord would sell .They are not exactly a rich club and were not far from going into administration a while back. Also Cruyff is an ajax man and would not stick his nose into feyenoord buisness

Comment #84You need to read some articles with quotes fro Cruyff about van Basten.
Feyenoord have already turned down Chelsea and a Milan club for De Guzman.

Comment #87Farfan – Doesnt want to play in the prem and not a big striker.
Chamkh – Yer i like him
Vucinic – Real Mdrid want him and hes plays for Roma, although not a regular, possible but unlikely.
Sobis/Sychev/Bangoura – All small, no need.
Ashton – Good but injury prone
Jones – Hes ok, THEY wont let him go to us, and i cant say i rate him that high.

Comment #88Why are people saying Ashley is a tight arse? Did he not recently spend £100 Million of his OWN MONEY just to wipe up the mess that FS left? And bid £16M for Luca Modric, Which IMO was too much for a player untested in the EPL. Spurs payed like £17M for Bent and he hardly played. Money ISN’T the answer, just a piece in the jigsaw.
As regards to buying Riise, didnt we buy a burnt out LB from one of the other top 4 and how did that work out? No one has come close to replacing Bernard IMO. Jose is improving however and still young. He will be better nxt year with a full pre-season under his belt and we only need to look for someone who can cover LB and play elsewhere, someone like Torosidis.
He is still young and improving and this is what we need to build up a squad for Europe in a few years. NOT players on huge wages with their best days behind them, prime example S Carr.
I think most people know what I am saying. Does anyone agree?

Comment #89Toon1978 Everton finished in the top 4 just a few seasons ago, good knowledge ya got there, plus all Newcastle fans go on about is their fans, yes you get 50,000+ only cus your the only team in your area, were as Everton get 40,000ish and are competing for fans with possibly the most successful football team in the world, and as for whos the bigger club (Everton of course) its laughable this is even being debated. Its this type of bollocks that make Newcastle fans hated.

Comment #93then how about, Pazzini, Kiesling, Iaquinta, Sanogo, Rosenberg, Quagliarella, Jo, Fred, Lazovic . All fairly big and capable.

Comment #94Kiessling is pretty good, Pazzini doesnt score enough, Rosenberg and Quagliarella are tallish but more pacey strikers than brutish target men.
Jo is a rip off, Fred NAH, Lazovic NAH, Sanogo NAH, Iaquinta NAH prefer someone younger.

Comment #104ArtetaWontGo… listen mate I won’t rise to any ‘size of club’ bollocks but the simple fact is we get 52k avg.from a city with 250k residents and it’s catchment. You lot have NEVER been anywhere near an avg. of 40k since way back in the 60/70s – you get 36 k from a city nearer to half a mil with the biggest catchment area in the whole of Europe.
Your doing better than us, you’ve won more recently, but you do not have better fans. We may have been given the worst reputation in the world by some f**kwits at Skysports but we know who we are. The greatest/dumbest fans in the world.
And i’d be quiet if I were you, cos when we were where you are now [although doing considerably better I might add your ground was empty and you were very very lucky to stay up.

Comment #106damn…gomis signed a new contract…
well…next target…gomez 🙂
i just hope we don’t end up with crouch…he’s a good player, but i really don’t think he’d fit… we need a powerful striker… we’ll probably miss out on gomez too, but i think our scoutnig network will suprise us in a positive way…
the club (board) is making good moves, luck is not on our side…but those things will change…they always do!

Comment #107I’m hoping KK’s opinion of 5th place is based on his ability to wheel and deal. ( if he had financial backing why else would he say this ).
Could this be his way of saying that there is no money available, hope not but you never know.
MA has done a lot for this club so far but he is not a legend yet !

Comment #108Yes, it’s a little annoying when people talk of teams like Portsmouth and Everton as better teams. Certainly Everton have done very well in the last two seasons, but outside of the top 4 things can change pretty quickly. A year or so ago no one would have rated Portsmouth much to take one example, whilst Bolton were rated to a large degree – now it’s the other way around.
Although I don’t like them, maybe the most likely to break into the top 4 right now are Spurs.
Arteta is a fantastic player, but aside from him Everton are mostly just a hard-working well organised side. That’s enough to make 5th place with one or two flair players like Arteta and lots of team spirit, but after we’ve added a bit more quality I don’t see Everton as being better than us. I’d be very surprised if they break into the top 4. More likely they’ll finish around 7th next year.
I’d go as far as to offer 17M or 12 plus either Smith or Duff for Arteta if we can afford it.
If Owen was worth that much then Arteta should well be.

Comment #112micepie good post ..Could’nt agree more..Was’nt it a couple years back when pompey were fighting for there lives…Now look at them..Consistent top ten side in my opinion now…No reason we cant fight for Europe next year with the right backing…
I think we do have the right backing also as it does seem like Ashley does want to spend on the right player..ie: modric for 16 mill…

Comment #114see tow yes i would buy him back, i wouldnt have been the numpty who wouldnt give him the two year contract in the first place.
Sibierski is a good fall back player, but i would use him on the bench as a replacement midfielder who can score, maybe rotate him with a promising youngster if we are intent on keeping the wages down.
