Newcastle Target Signs New Four Year Deal

Surprising news today that Newcastle target, Bafetimbi Gomis, has signed a new four-year deal with his French club St Etienne.

Bafe Gomis – signed new 4 year deal at St. Etienne

Newcastle have already made several scouting visits to watch the outstanding 22-year-old French International, since January.

But it seems strange that Bafe would sign a new contract with his current club, just before the Euro2008 Championships begin this coming Saturday.

Gomis told his club’s website today:

“I am very happy to stay in my formative club.”

“My priority was always to stay at St Etienne and I am glad my situation was solved ahead of Euro 2008.”

“I thus hope to get a place in the Champions League with Les Verts.”

It seems strange to us that Gomis wouldn’t want to move to a better class of football than he currently has at St. Etienne. He could also get a much higher wage at a top European club.

St. Etienne is the only club he’s ever been at, having joined them in 2003, but he was on loan at Troyes for short stint, and appeared for them 13 times and scored 6 goals.

Bafe has played 105 times for St. Etienne and scored 30 goals.

Gomis scored 16 goals last season as St Etienne finished fifth in the French League, and on his debut last week for the full French side, he scored both goals in France’s 2-0 win against Ecuador.

His first goal was a terrific shot from fully 30 yards, that hit the net like a bullet.

Whether he would be willing to consider any offers for him after Euro 2008 remains to be seen.

But if he does move one to another club, he wouldn’t be the first player to move after just signing a new contract.

Comments welcome.

Shame — I had a sneaky suspicion he would show up here … Knock yourself out in the French league kid.

“It seems strange to us that Gomis wouldn’t want to move to a better class of football than he currently has at St. Etienne.”

So why would he come to us then?

It appears that the third sentence of his quote is key; if they get into the Champions League next year he’ll stay. If he can get what he’s (currently) after at St.Etienne (France international, Europe, fair crack at qualifying for the CL next season), can you blame him for staying? For showing some loyalty? Of course, to all of our knowledge (unless any of the staff of St.Etienne frequent this comments board), his keenness has yet to be tested by a truly big club (Barca, AC, Inter, etc), but to date it’s been pretty steadfast and credit to him for doing so.

Also, St.Etienne are hardly a club without a grand history. No doubt the kid is having a blast in Ligue 1 and if he continues to develop as he has then he will exponentially increase in ability in the coming seasons.

    Good luck to him.

Hmmm seems like that huge dossier is really paying off Mr Wise.

We will not get Arteta or Crouch..sorry to say but pompey and Everton are a much more ambitious proposition at the moment.

Keep watching as Ashley sells our assets stripping the Toon of any quality that we have left..does he know Kenny Dalgleish??

Perhaps St Etienne have pressured him into signing a contract extension so they will receive the largest possible transfer fee should he wish to move on.

I still think he’d move on should a bigger club come along – not sure we’ll have the financial clout to make that happen now though.

that’s a shock. Even how poor newcastle have been in the past couple of seasons still would have thought he would choose us over them.

I believe midfielders should be our priority as atm we have no AM!

Well he’s missed the boat then. He can only blame himself if he doesn’t get a big move in the future.

He’ll still get sold off if he has a good season: french football economics point to this. He’ll rack up a few extra grand between now and the move, st etienne will have stronger negotiational muscle and he’ll go for a big fee. That doesn’t mean he’ll join us though!

im not pushed either way. I think if we got crouch for about 7 mill that would be just as good..He’s also proven in the prem which is more than what we can say about this guy…

Could also stick a cheeky bid in for Anelka maybe..Does’nt seem to have much off a future at chelsea

Too bad, but I don’t know how much truth was in the stories about KK watching him a few times. Every day other players are linked with NUFC, but nothing seems to happen.

I still am confident in what will come, but something about the transfer targets has to be cleared quite shortly. I mean let us all hope that we get a good and exciting summer.

I’m a bit disappointed that he will not come cause he was my 2nd player on the list. My top priority still is possible: ARSHAVIN

So thats Gomis and Pandev that definitely wont be here next season! We are missing out on too many quality signings that are available.

I really hope we’re ambitious this summer, and sign top 4 quality players.

On another note, I think Gomis made the right decision.

Thing is Gomis is still very young.

PLENTY of players have done VERY well but then end up as nothing.

So maybe its good he has another season there, and see how he is next season.

He is ONLY 20, one more year wont hurt.

AND If the Cardozo offeris true:

    A) BENFICA are NUTS 25m REJECTED ha ha ha

    B) Shows GREAT ambition from us, so hopefully we WILL get some big stars.

So cross another off the long list. Fair play to him though, hopefully we can offer more in terms of incentive to play at the toon next time he is available. If we still need him.

Would like to see some news with midfielders

Emre BelözoÄŸlu’nu Fenerbahçe’ye satan Newcastle United, uzun süredir ilgilendiÄŸi Arda Turan için Galatasaray’a resmi teklifini iletti.
