Surprising news today that Newcastle target, Bafetimbi Gomis, has signed a new four-year deal with his French club St Etienne.
Bafe Gomis – signed new 4 year deal at St. Etienne
Newcastle have already made several scouting visits to watch the outstanding 22-year-old French International, since January.
But it seems strange that Bafe would sign a new contract with his current club, just before the Euro2008 Championships begin this coming Saturday.
Gomis told his club’s website today:
“I am very happy to stay in my formative club.”
“My priority was always to stay at St Etienne and I am glad my situation was solved ahead of Euro 2008.”
“I thus hope to get a place in the Champions League with Les Verts.”
It seems strange to us that Gomis wouldn’t want to move to a better class of football than he currently has at St. Etienne. He could also get a much higher wage at a top European club.
St. Etienne is the only club he’s ever been at, having joined them in 2003, but he was on loan at Troyes for short stint, and appeared for them 13 times and scored 6 goals.
Bafe has played 105 times for St. Etienne and scored 30 goals.
Gomis scored 16 goals last season as St Etienne finished fifth in the French League, and on his debut last week for the full French side, he scored both goals in France’s 2-0 win against Ecuador.
His first goal was a terrific shot from fully 30 yards, that hit the net like a bullet.
Whether he would be willing to consider any offers for him after Euro 2008 remains to be seen.
But if he does move one to another club, he wouldn’t be the first player to move after just signing a new contract.
Comments welcome.

Comment #58Newcastle United, who have sold Emre to Fenerbahce, have now made an official bid for Galatasaray’s Arda Turan. Newcastle United showed their interest for Arda by making a 12m euro bid, hoping to purchase him before the European Championships start. Despite Adnan Polat having said “We’re planning to have a strong squad for next year. Therefore we won’t sell any of our players who play regularly”, this offer seems to have caught his attention.
(Though I had noted an interview with Arda yesterday or so in which he said he would do whatever Galatasaray would want him to do and that he wants to wait until June 30 before he discusses anything regarding transfers)

Comment #62Btw, off topic but in his live interview on tv today, Fenerbahce’s Chairman said that he’s interested in Nihat 🙁 He also noted that he’s on the verge of agreeing with 3 ‘widely-known’ forwards and transfer one of them which have not been mentioned in the press so far. He also added that they don’t want Kanoute, I’m scared now lol.
So I’m going to make this a bit more relevant and note that I saw someone here say that Santa Cruz would be a good addition for you guys. I’m just having a guess here but I just want to say don’t be surprised if Fenerbahce gets him.

Comment #65Those ain’t really reliable. I’m pretty sure those websites take their stuff from Sabah and stuff. Those guys are usually interested in filling up their columns. It’s pretty straightforward that Arda’s going to wait until the 30th before he goes off.
As for Arda going to the premiership we all love him. So yeah, we’ll always support him since he’s going to be a vital player for the national team as well. And here’s hoping he, as a player who emerged from our youths and a die hard GS fan, doesn’t get transferred off you guys (if he does come) to a certain arch rival club. Whatever team he might go to in the premiership I’m also hoping they don’t get him fat like Emre!

Comment #67Just get Arda and I’ll support nufc no matter how far it would be from Lboro!
As for Kanoute, Fenerbahce’s Chairman said today on tv that he’s not good enough (LOL) and that he would only remain as an ‘alternative’ for the 3 names they’re trying to get. It’s kinda scary how ambitious these guys are. But if they really are interested in Santa Cruz I don’t think they’ll let you have him I’m afraid =/ 19 goals in 36 matches while playing for a team like Blackburn in the premiership is sick. It’s just a guess anyhow, they might not even want him.
As for Tomasson, it has been like a month since I’ve heard about him. I really hope we don’t get him. We don’t even have a coach yet still so I’m guessing we’ll get that sorted first and have the coach approve of any transfers.

Comment #73Ohh right, the little lad from Feyenoord (raised by Dortmund). (Sorry, just got confused cuz we refer to Turkish players by their first names :p)
Nuri is a central oriented midfielder yea. He was incredibly good last year and was tipped as the next Aurelio (from Fener) even. But for some reason he didn’t really make an impression at all this year and didn’t even get a spot in the national team when the squad had about 28 players. He has potential that’s for sure but the thing is he’s still young and he seems a bit inconsistent. I’d say it would be a gamble if you get him right now, but if you were to get Aurelio (who plays a bit similarly to him) I would have said he would defo be a good buy. Can’t say the same for Nuri I’m afraid.
Arda would be a gamble as well, but one thing’s for sure he would be a menace to the opposing defense as a winger.
Out of the two though Arda made a way bigger impression than Nuri so far.

Comment #74Well alright I noticed I was a bit harsh on Nuri :p I’d rate both those players as quality really, but it’s just that the dutch league really doesn’t appeal to me. Maybe he built upon his skills in Feyenoord, I would have preferred that he stayed in Dortmund though. Heck even Kezman did well in the Dutch league and now he’s getting outscored by his substitute here.

Comment #75apology accepted gordond. trust me i love our team too and im trying to be as optomistic as possible, just dunno if we’ll be able to attract quality.
i’d love to see arda come though after all the news, hopefully we’ll get a few decent names in this summer.
santa cruz i would take in a heartbeat.

Comment #77She’ll be right mate. We’ll resign Owen, Oba and Taylor. Zogbia and milner will stay. Well get Crouch, Dunne, Risse, Arda, Shorey and a host of others. Whose the fella above? Sahin? Yeah well have him too…

Comment #78This is my drunk opinion, so feedback would be good. Injured, high payed players are leaving (hi duff, emre, smith) early in the summer. This free’s up wage space, and squad space. We havent announced interest in anyone since modric
Im thinking we are keeping all deals silent (fenerbahce announced emre) until we have 3 big signings to announce. I think in 4 weeks we will show off turan, gomis and risse, and the mood will change round the club. I also see sessignon coming in, plus 2 youngish mids
I know ill regret this at the start of the season when hale is on the left wing, pace def mid, dale winton as an attacking mid and ferdinand, albert and barton dragged out of retirement. howeer mr blobby is ideal as the target man on a free…

Please hopefully not! there are some other strikers there? What about that DIANE? Not crouch…we would be the loughers and deserve that name 🙁

Comment #80a team would have to put up just that bit more money now to pry him away now that he’s on a long term contract at the club, so there’s still a chance he’ll leave.
that said he was never going to come to us and will never, so your wasting your time on pipe dreams with this one.
