Blackburn Rovers chairman John Williams is reported to have already drawn up a contract offer for former Newcastle manager Sam Allardyce, as he prepares to lose manager Mark Hughes to either Chelsea or Manchester City.
Sam Allardyce – likely new manager at Blackburn Rovers
The Sun is reporting today that Williams has already decided on Allardyce as Hughes’ replacement.
Blackburn Rovers are ready to offer the former Blackpool, Bolton and Newcastle manager £2M a year, and Williams believes he is the man to take the club back into Europe.
We think Sam was on £3M/year at Newcastle, and was highly compensated when he was sacked by the club in January.
Big Sam has been out of work since being released by Newcastle in January, and he was never given a decent chance at the club. Certainly 6 months is hardly enough for a manager.
But he was finally replaced by Kevin Keegan more for the way the team were playing than anything else.
Newcastle Owner Mike Ashley took a chance in replacing Sam mid-way through the season, and overall the bet paid off with Kevin making Newcastle into a much better looking side, once he had time to get to know the squad he had inherited from Sam.
And many of the players Sam brought in last summer such as Beye, Faye, Enrique, Barton, Geremi and Viduka are first team starters under Kevin.
Mark Hughes is certainly in demand, and two top clubs, Man City and Chelsea are after him, and we would expect his choice to be Chelsea.
That would mean that Big Sam could also be in the frame for the Eastlands job, but we don’t think Sam would put up with the nonsense from the club’s Thailand owner Thaksin Shinawatra.
We just cannot see them getting along somehow. 😀
And Sam is said to be keen on the challenge at Blackburn, and we think the job would suit him perfectly, and there’s not much tinkering that needs to be done with the side either, that’s for sure.
Mark Hughes did a fantastic job at Blackburn, after replacing Graeme Souness in 2004, who left for Newcastle (wish he hadn’t), but Blackburn and their fans are now the losers as Mark rightly is being offered some top jobs.
But we also think Sam will do just fine at Blackburn Rovers.
