Dean Ashton Interesting Newcastle Again

There is a report today in the Evening Chronicle, that Newcastle United may again be interested in Dean Ashton of West Ham.

Dean Ashton – Newcastle said to be interested

Dean is a very good player, but we’re not sure he’s the answer to what Newcastle need right now.

Ashton seems to run hot and cold too much during the season, and his injury record is certainly not good, and that’s one thing that concerns us about the player.

The last thing we want at the club is someone like Mark Viduka, who continually misses games with niggly little injuries.

A source close to the East End club told the Evening Chronicle today:

“We know that Newcastle are interested in signing Dean.”

“And Alan Curbishley is aware of this.”

“There have already been a couple of rounds of contract talks with Dean before he went on international duty with England, but nothing is decided.”

“We think that deep down Dean might want to stay but, like any player, he wants to have a contract that reflects his performances.”

There is talk that he would cost up to £11M, and quite honestly we think there are better strikers around for that amount of money.

Darren Bent – would he be better buy than Ashton?

We’d rather see Kevin go for Darren Bent of Tottenham, or Peter Crouch of Liverpool, if we are going to pay that kind of money for an English striker.

Both have better injury records than Ashton, and both can score goals in the Premier League.

Dean Ashton made his name at Crewe Alexandra from 200-2005 where he appeared 158 times and scored 61 goals.

The 24 year-old 6’2″ striker then went to Norwich City for £3M to play 44 times for the East Anglia side and scored 16 goals before he was bought by West Ham in January of 2006 for about £7M, but he’s never settled well at the London club.

It may well be that Dean wants to move on in the summer.

Norwich are said to have a 15% sell-on clause for Ashton, and this would be reflected in any transfer fee West Ham puts on the player, especially as the Hammers don’t have to sell their star striker as he is under contract for another two years.

That sell-on clause will be good news for Norwich manager Glenn Roeder.

If we are to go after an English striker that’s available, we’d plump for Darren Bent of Spurs or Peter Crouch of Liverpool, who we think can score lots of goals in a Kevin Keegan side.

We’re sure quite a few Newcastle fans may disagree with us on this one.

So let’s know what you think – comments always very welcome.

worst signing we could ever have, three sicknotes and all at the front, with one reliable player with an ankle injury. It would be Dyer x 3.

Our strikers may be Carroll and Fabio Zamblera next season.

Buy Cisse or Kitson and Crouch only if Owen is going and spend in the midfield, move up then spend heavily on strikers who are brilliant today, have no baggage etc.

Said it on every occasion he is the closest thing to Shearer so lets get him. As before it probably will not happen and its just all down to the press yet again

there are better strikers out there than the 3 of them. graeme love to see us get eto-o, dont think we would, but you never no, I would be chuffed to bits caus that is the kind of quality we need. strikers need service, but if you dont create the space, you dont get the chances, so we need players who can unlock defences for these strikers to stick it in the net. I saw we were linked with arteta yesterday. great player and I would take him. It is players like that we need. Ashton, he is a good player yes, but the problem is, we have got an injury prone striker already who is the same type of player in viduka so i dont think i would go for him.

I rate none of them high enough! If we bring in another striker it must be topclass!

Diané is way better and cheaper as all this three…and hey, NASRI signed a contract extention just to sign after that with Arsenal, right? So there’s a decent chance we can even sign GOMIS!!

Aim high, you can always lower expectations a bit. I would sooner be chasing the best available rather than an Ashton or a Bent.

Aim low and thats where you stay!!!! Newcastle have always had brilliant strikers, since way back when – SuperMac, Wyn Davies, Pop Robson, Tino, Shearer etc etc.

I’d be gutted if we gave Spurs any money which would help pay for Modric and others !
    Maybe Berbatov the exception 🙂

Oh no – not Ashton! Do we have to chase these sick note men? We only have so much space in the treatment room after all.

His touch is good and he’s good technically but his finishing and aeriel ability is nowhere near Shearer’s. The England game on Sunday showed him up, Crouch also proved a much more effective striker against them.

However I don’t like the way Crouch becomes a target for everything and is detrimental to flowing, passing styles of play.

Adebayor at Arsenal is a target man but Wenger has coached him to become part of the team and not just an aeriel target. I don’t know if Crouch could adapt his style of play like this. Ashton can and has.

Carroll still needs another year out on loan. Eto’o is unrealistic. Gomis is looking less probable.

    So – Ashton or Crouch?

as for Etoo, he is a good striker, but not a team player. he is more interested in personal glory than whats best for the team! sure, he would score a few goals, but he’s the type of player who moans to the press before consulting the club! Would demand a massive wage too. dont really want that kinda player at the Toon!
a slice of humble pie would do him the world of good! Remember how bent out of shape he got when Henry went to Barca! Moaning to the press about how he is the best player at the club, and should not even be considered to sit on the bench!

Much rather take on the long Peter Crouch!

Anyone know bout this Cardozo chap?

    ……………..Given/ Harper…………….

I’d probs have a bash at signing some city players seein as the whole squad is supposedly on transfer list, maybe michael johnson to cover Barton while he’s doin porridge. That Corluka is a good player aswell. Plus a flair player, maybe Arda if poss and obv another striker.

Ashton is a fantastic player. I accept he has been injured a lot but I can’t remember anyone calling Shearer ‘sicknote’ when he had a serious injury.

Ashton’s touch is fantastic and one of the most natural goalscorers in the league on his day. I reckon KK could get the best out of him.

I think this one could happen.

Ashton looked appalling against Trinidad in the friendly for England. Considering that was his big chance, I would not pay more than £5m.

Wayne Bridge, however, was absolutely solid at left back, getting up and down the LHS to defend, block and deliver good service for Ashton to fluff but Barry to score.

I’m not sure if Ashton is the sort of player my old club needs right now.

I would like to see Newcastle have a genuine attempt at signing Nicolas Anelka. He’s pacy, clinical in front of goal and he simply hasn’t settled at Chelsea. Working for Sky Sports on their Champions League coverage this season has given me a first hand look at Anelka and I think his body language suggests he could be up for grabs.

Luis Boa Morte is another, good in a 4-4-2 and adds that little extra quality down the left side. Maybe he could find it tough in a 4-3-3 but good players, and let me tell you this, Boa Morte is good, can work well no matter what system they are played in.

why does everyone always say we need a big striker to hold the ball up, u dnt hav to hav a big striker, look at man utd, keep th ball on the floor and play football and u dnt need anyone big do you!!! plus u dnt hav to b bigt to hold th ball up, and id much rather hav a player who gets th ball and looks 2 run at defenders than a one who gets the ball and has to hold the game up nd wait for support

Agree with you Leo, minimum guarantee of 10 premiership goals, but probably 16ish.

Now we know where the extra wages came from the treatment staff, better get some more if we buy Ashton.

If Viduka ever goes Ashton would be an excellent replacement, until then i would leave well alone.

We need a striker who can run past players on the counter and keep up with Martins. Martins is always waiting for back up and the opportunities are gone, a fast striker on the opposite side with Owen in the middle and we are sorted.

All of our strikers currently score well, they arent poor, Rooney only got 11 premiership goals.

the rest of the team arent scoring enough goals.

Crouch would be a good signing ,if we went for bent it would be another useless big money signing.Personally i would like to see us try for Eidur Gudjonson he is proven premiership quality.

I’ve bought Huntelaar in FM for 10mill – amazing player.
But he was linked with Madrid recently.
Just a thought – Gomis, Gomez, Huntelaar, Cardozo – all good players, cannot see all of them going to big clubs this summer, so we still have the chance IMO.

Personally i think we need a consistent scorer, we have classy already in our striker line up, reliability and consistency we dont have except from Martins.
Cisse is as consistent as Martins which is what we need.
If the strikers we currently have were fit and under keegan for the whole of the season I dont see a single premiership club with a better striker line up, fitness and reliability are our problems. I wouldnt want to sell any of them.

Fernando Cavenaghi scores bout 2 goals a game on Champo 01/02 but hes gash in real life and struggles to get in bordeaux’s team, games are not a good reference point.

Personally think alot of this summers names will struggle in prem i.e modric and arshavin, huntelaar etc…

plus anyone from french/ dutch leagues cannot be a certain hit anywhere never mind prem.

what we need is 2 strikers who will work there guts out, but have the class, look at rooney, tevez, they run all over, defend from the front, thats why man u are at the top, and we are mid table, our strikers dont do that, but, when we had shearer and bellamy, they did and look where we were in the league. so geordie nick, you are right mate, we need players like this, but have the class also. if we are to have a target man, we need someone who can cross a ball to start with, which we do not have, so there would be no point buying a target man.
