Owen Hopes For Newcastle Contract Soon

Michael Owen has given an interview to the Newcastle Journal today and seems to us that he’s committed himself already to the club.

Kevin and Michael – seem great working together for the club

Michael talked to the Newcastle Journal today:

“It’s hard to set targets.”

“If we set off with the same players that we’ve got now then we’ve got a good squad of players and I would probably say that we’ve got to aim for the UEFA Cup, the top eight, or the top six if we have a fantastic season.”

“That’s if we are stuck with the same players we’ve got now, but there’s a lot of time before the first ball is kicked at the start of the season and there could be a lot of ins and outs in the meantime and I don’t know what will happen.”

“If we get more ins than outs, and they’re quality signings as well, then you never know. We could push our targets a little bit higher.”

It seems to us that Michael Owen is not thinking at all of leaving Newcastle United.

If Michael can make a decent deal with the club, and even be willing to take a pay cut, that would go down very well with Newcastle fans, who have always respected players completely committed to the Tyneside club.

Since the arrival of Kevin Keegan in January, not only has Michael looked a much better player, but he has seemed to thrive on being captain of the club, and he’s taken the responsibilities very well indeed.

But once he does sign a new contract, it will be a relief to those fans who agree with Kevin, that Michal is crucial to Newcastle‘s future success.

Is it me or do those comments sound like a put down about the current squad. Sounds like he is resigned to another season of mediocrity unless someone decides to splash some cash.

Michael – that is how to stuff it to the gossip mongers of the London gutter press. I got my new deal at the end of May and I am better off by £26.00 per month. Hope you sign for better my son. Like what you have said and good to hear the realism too.

So – back on subject: Owen’s said nowt but good stuff for months now, and while I’m hoping the wage cap thing is being exaggerated, I am also starting to believe that perhaps EMO is thinking beyond his salary.

Overall, a nice bit of news for once. Let’s hope for more by the end of the week.

Hm, just thinking…wouldn’t it be a nice payback to the club if OWEN takes a small wage cut? We could argue that this is “compensation” for the long time he wasn’t available during his injury?

Would be a nice signal from the captain and maybe others like MARTINS follow this small wage cutting? What an athmosphere this would create! 😉

Newcastle’ın proposal having a head karıştırdı
Newcastle United’ın Arda Turan’ın certificate of good service in cause to be made 12 million Sterling proposal Galatasaray yönetiminin kafasını karıştırdı. Well I totally disagree with Sirjasontoon. Ashley is a businessman and takes his kicks from turning businesses around. He’s never even hinted at doing a Chelski, and he understands that real success only comes with a stable financial base and real income. It will come, but alas people will still call for heads to roll and cash to be splashed as if that ever helped anything.

Chelski has half a billion of debt and will fold the day that murdering Russki git gets bored and leaves. We have the best owner in the Premiership, so stop slagging the guy off.

Owen is making right sort of noises at last but not convinced he will stay if one of the big clubs come in for him and they will expect to get him on the cheap.
Howver if I’m wrong (hopefully) and he does sign that will help attract transfer targets to the club.
IF he was to take a pay cut then THAT will prove his commitment to the club

I don’t understand this pay cut rubbish. I’ve explained why a strict pay cut for Owen is bad, all around, for the club before and I won’t re-state all my arguments AGAIN: but in brief it sends all the wrong messages to the press, to current players, to prospective signings, and to Owen himself. Now, staying on the same wage with his “raise” coming only in incentives/bonuses sounds like the right idea to me. I think he will only leave if Liverpool come calling: ManUtd won’t be interested, nor Chelsea, and Arsenal doesn’t take Englishmen. Since Benitez doesn’t seem to take Englishmen either…I think Owen will stay.

Owen has said, more than once, that while players are of course interested in his pay packet, that player is also going to be looking at how he feels about the situation — does he enjoy the atmosphere, is training enjoyable, are the fans good/supportive, is his family happy or going to be happy, etc. Since Keegan’s arrival, Owen seems to be reveling in the atmosphere, enjoying training, and he’s always had great words for Newcastle fans. All good indicators.

Owen is England’s best — a true professional, a talented player, and no big-time Charlie on or off the pitch. Just the sort Newcastle want to attract, and need to keep.

PS Anyone else think Owen would’ve stuck more than 2 past the US and T&T for England if he’d not been ill? England’s options look pretty thin, imo.
