The Sun is reporting today that Eidur Gudjohnsen has been told he can leave Barcelona in the summer.

Eidur Gudjohnsen - will be allowed to move in the summer
Newcastle have been linked with a move for Eidur ever since last summer, and there’s no doubt the player would improve the Newcastle squad as he could play in either of the front 3 striker positions in a 4-3-3 formation, or even in midfield.
The former Chelsea player has never been able to maintain a first team position at the Spanish giants during the last two years, and while we don’t know if he’s been told he can actually leave, it’s a good bet that Barcelona will let him move on in the summer.
Gudjohnsen fits the Keegan requirements, because he’s a proven Premier League player, and even the fee may be reasonable at around £4M. However his wage demands will be high.
Kevin Keegan will likely face competition from West Ham, who are also said to be interested in the Icelandic star.
Gudjohnsen, 29, has made just over 66 appearances in two years at the Nou Camp (14 goals), and has struggled to make any impact, and it could be the right move for him to return to the Premier League.
The 6′1″ striker played 261 times for Chelsea and scored 78 goals from 2000-2006, and he has so far played 49 times for Iceland, with 20 goals.
The Sun is also saying that Kevin Keegan wants Gudjohnsen to replace Obafemi Martins, who is said to be surplus to requirements.
But that is utter nonsense.
Comments welcome.

From 200-2006? Again Ed, proof read, is that really asking too much of you?

Obi martins surplus??? yeah okay the sun! Have always been a bit of a fan of gudjohnsen but don’t really think his needed at this time in his career at the toon, would prefer we spent a little more on a younger player, which could balance itself out with a lesser wage demand.
4 ELFER // Jun 6, 2008 at 9:45
MARTINS is much better player and still young? Why can you write somthing, ED?
5 Geordie Gerrard7 // Jun 6, 2008 at 9:46
eidur has one of the best attitudes in football. qaulity bloke, but is against all things we are looking for. so noooooo.

Terry if it means so much to you maybe Ed should email you all the articles first for you to proof read. He provides a brilliant website for Newcastle fans and people like yourself showing no appreciation do not go anyway to convince him to continue. Cheers Ed keep up the great work and please tell me Oba is not really surplus to requirement.

I second your thoughts entirely, SuperShearer

How can you guys say Eiður Smári has a bad attitude? He is a model professional in my opinon. As a fellow icelander I can honestly say that he is a good player. He is great at passing the ball, has a good work rate, is good in the air and can shoot the ball, kind of “Ballack-ish”. If we could snatch him for the 4 millions quoted he would add depth to both our midfield and frontline. I always said it was a mistake for him to join Barcelona as he is simply not good enough for them but he would improve our squad and thats a fact. But this saying that Oba is surplus? Bulls**t! But regarding Eiður, he is not getting any younger and his career might have reached its peak so getting younger players with lesser wage demands could be a better option but to sum it up: Eiður has premiership experiance, he is versitile, has a good attitude, skillfull player. 4 million? Go for him.

I’ve always been a fan of Gudjonsen when he was at Chelsea. If he replaced Viduka I’d be happy, but not if it was Martins.
Is anyone else getting transfer rumour fatigue? The window doesn’t even open for another three weeks or so.

everyone stop getting on ed’s back. it sickens me to see people having a go after all the time and effort he puts in. Who cares if he misses out the occassional number or letter? Its a great blog, thanks Ed.
Also, i think gudjohnsson would be good but id like to see us set our sights on someone younger, like gomis or even dean ashton.

Anyway, i dont want gudjohnsen either. 14 goals in two years is not good and hes 29 and will want alot in terms of salary. he is not a top draw player and i would rather see crouch partner owen and martins up front……….any spelling mistakes - i couldnt give a fcuk!

No for the following reasons
1. He’s turned us down twice before
2. He’s too old
3. He’ll want high wages
4. He’ll want guaranteed first team football
Let him rot back at Bolton

pointless signing, nowhere near good enough. As soon as we get him we will be looking to offload him
20 Eric // Jun 6, 2008 at 10:21
Without this site we would be walking around in the dark and left to the loony whims of the gutter press. Keep up the good work Ed. Gudjohnson will most likely sign for Portsmouth, Spurs or Wigan. NUFC ought to go for some really crap players so that Portsmouth or Spurs go and buy them instead.
21 Davies // Jun 6, 2008 at 10:23
Not for me thanks. If I thought he was going to take a low wage, maybe, but he’s not worth £70,000 a week, or whatever he’s likely to end up earning.
Just to throw my hat in; thanks Ed. Your blog makes my days at work pass a little more easily. Even the trivial fact style articles give me something to take my mind off an otherwise dull job.
For anyone inclined to complain about this site, just remember, it doesn’t cost you anything, and if you find the proof reading unbearable, you can always look elsewhere.
Perhaps you could look up some English seminars instead.

Well,
1) I think it is outrageous that people critisise Ed’s work, considering the fact that this is a voluntry thing he is doing, he is under no obligation to run this fantastic website.
2)I do not want Eidur, I feel he is not what our team needs, we need someone in the Gomez/Gomis mould ideally, and if they are not realistic Peter Crouch would’nt be bad either.

25 The real big AL // Jun 6, 2008 at 10:30
Tom4Nufc,
I agree with both points. Ed does a great job and why people feel the need to pick on small spelling/grammar errors is beyond me and also Gudjohnson is too old and wages are too expensive. The size of his wages would upset some of the players especially taylor.
26 Mag4life // Jun 6, 2008 at 10:31
Terry…proof read? Why don’y you be useful and check it up on wikipedia. Is that really asking too much of you?
27 51times // Jun 6, 2008 at 10:31
Depends on his wages, assuming he’s on no higher than £40k I’d take him.
28 Sav // Jun 6, 2008 at 10:37
I don’t think Eidur fits the reported profile the Toon are looking for in terms of age or wage.
Someone who does fit it is Milner and this morning’s resurfacing of tales he may be ‘available’ aren’t good. We have to trust KK and I don’t want him pilloried at the head of the SJP steps again, because its his call but I think there’s a good deal more to come from Milner and I hope he stays to prove it.
And keep up the good work, Ed …..just ‘coz you went to Manor Park!

I suppose it depends on where KK sees his main position. If its as a striker, then no thanks and i agree with alot of other fans Gomis, Gomez or even Crouch.
However if its to play the ‘Owen’ role, playing a bit deeper i would take him over Aimar. As i believe with the Argie there would be a greater risk as his career does seem to be in a downwards spiral at the moment. Eidur is proven and very versitile. At 4m the price would be right too!

I have’nt bought a rag in years (like the independant for other reasons) as they are free on the internet and you can read there garbage online for free…and thats something we all have in common on this site.

entertainers…..sorry man, i dont agree, aimar is like a million times better than gudjohnsen in every way. he is stagnating though, i will give you that much. but then again, gudjohnsen…14 goals in two years man, cumon!! and he’s old than aimar. The bottom line is that aimar was the worlds best player not too long ago and he is not past it at in terms of age. its just if we could ingite his desire…thats what has gone, it goes with alot of the best, gazza, ronaldo (the original one, best etc. IF that bloke came to us and it worked out it would be exactly like when manure got cantona and thats a fact. cantona was shite until he went to man u. get turan on left, middle left zogs, aimar and milner, with crouch up front with owens/martins. class attacking force. and not alot of outlay.
41 Gateshead Mag. // Jun 6, 2008 at 11:23

42 steve // Jun 6, 2008 at 11:37
I wouldnt be surprised if we end up offloading Oba - KK keeps going on about a “unique” player but he’s never actually came out and backed him, I think he’d prefer someone like Crouch / Gudjohnson who are more likely to form an Owen partnership and gives him options to play a 4-4-2 or 4-3-3
Personally I think Oba’s great and reckon getting rid would be a huge mistake
43 The Entertainers // Jun 6, 2008 at 11:57
@ Craig Chisholm
I suppose my views on the Ediur / Aimar debate are not completely up to date. As both players stars do seem to have fallen of late.
I take your point on Aimar once being one of the worlds greatest players a few season ago (but so was Ronaldo…the fat one…and you would’nt have him)
Some times when a players fire has gone out, it is hard to ignite it. Here at Newcastle we know that better than most….Kluivert, Duff even Butt in the first season. Yes i know the same could be said about Eidur, but he does have roots here and it would be easier for him to settle.
But you do make a fair point and if your right then we have the best motivator in KK, so who ever it is lets hope we’re both not disappointed!

GAteshead Mag… at least someone has some sense.
LOOK AT OUR SQUAD AND LOOK WHO WE’VE SIGNED. Then think realsitically about next year and where we finished last season. I’d have Eidur in a heart beat. And Aimar and Gomis and ANY other funker who wants to sign, cos I don’t imgaine that list will be too long for this calibre of player.
All this bandying of names has gone to peoples heads. We are going to struggle to sign players; be realsitic.
This is exactly the kind of player KK will use as an interim and will get the best out of where others fail.

Of all the strikers that we’ve been linked with, this is the most realistic and the best we can realistically get. Would love a Gomis or a Gomez but I don’t see it happening. This is the next best option. He is a great player imo.
51 craig chisholm // Jun 6, 2008 at 13:51
t-g-w…….again mate i gotta disagree - sorry like. the bloke has scored 14 goals in two years mate. he is staring at 30 years old and would want big money. he also has turned his nose up at us before. someone else said ’so what’ when i said that before. let me put it this wat, picture this scenario and then tell me the truth. if you really fancied a lass and asked her out - twice by the way, and she said get lost and went and got shagged rotten by someone else for a few years, when that bloke chucked her to one side cos she was past her prime….would you still want her……well mate, that bird is gudjohnsen AND that copper knobbed twat sidwell - fcuk em i say.
52 micepie // Jun 6, 2008 at 14:03
Gudjohnsen would be a good signing. But why should it be inferred that anyone we buy should be REPLACING oneone else???!!! If we sell Amoebi, we could have Owen, Martins, Gudjohnsen, Viduka and Carroll. Sorted! Besides which, Gud’j isn’t anything like Martins anyway. If anything, if Owen or Viduka are injured he could play their role – not Martins (who is invaluable to us – it’s almost as if the Southern gutter press don’t like it when we have something different that other teams don’t have).

Its out of order to critisize the blog. If your unhappy, visit another blog. I for one think its an excellent blog.
Gudjohnsen would be a fantastic signing. He is a supporting striker meaning he could be used alongside either Owen or Martins. He has great vision, is good in the air and is a very good dribbler. He would get bare assissts in this league.
Martins & Gudjohnsen would be a close as we could get to Cole & Beardsley.
After reading Toon Boys post thought forget him. If he wants to live in London thats him, but dont bad-mouth our club in the mean time.

for midfield maybe, striker no, I would keep the current line up.
I think some of the above people are right, this is the sort of player we may get, I think Cisse is beyond us too, while some people here dont rate him, then they need to think players below his calibre, I do not think we are an attractive club to anyone who wants to make a name for themselves in the premiership at present, who will they play alongside? Eidur is a totally different player to Martins. Martins is all explosive pace, counter attacking running at people, Eidur is all holding up ball, bringing other people into play, poaching goals. Would compliment each other and would definatly want to sign Gudjohnsen but not in place of Martins who is full of potential, with some top notch coaching the guy could be world class and hes totally commited which counts for a hell of alot (just look at Cristiano ‘I want to go to Madrid’ Ronaldo - Bumder)

Newcastle need to get some good PR going, some upbeat stuff about the future of the club.
While everyone says we are speculating and it is all talk and we only have the press and what they say to go on, the players who are thinking of moving will only have the same information unless an official approach is made.
if you were a footballer thinking of changing employer are the snippets of information floating around making Newcastle number one choice?
I dont think so- cut costs pay players as little as possible, we will sign them up again when we are ready we are the bosses even if it is after the transfer window has opened, we wont tell you who you will be playing alongside as we may or may not keep players we already have.
Think about it if you were looking for another job, not number one choice really.
I am amazed such an allegedly good business man is allowing the club-his business to float about aimlessly like this, we are in a good financial position but it doesnt say much for his business skills.
Like others have said, seats and merchandise moves on quality of players and play.
77 Sav // Jun 7, 2008 at 13:06
Potential signings will be watching the protracted contract wrangle with Michael Owen and waiting to see what transpires. Get that one sorted, followed by Taylor and we’ll start to look like a decent proposition.
As far as Gudjohnsen goes, he’s good if he is cheap, but would probably command a whopping weekly wedge.
So I am glad to see the club apparently follow a deliberate, sensible and realistic buying policy. Its only about time. More emphasis needs to be on top class coaching and a world class scouting network.
Anyone demanding trophy signings at this early stage before renewing their ticket can b****r off to support Leeds with Freddie Shepherd.
