Glasgow Rangers are trying to get Madjid Bougherra from Charlton Athletic, according to Sky Sports, and Newcastle are said to be watching developments.

Madjid Bougherra - Newcastle watching developments
The 25 year-old Algerian international seems to be in demand, as Real Betis failed with a bid last month, which didn’t meet Charlton’s valuation of the player they signed for £2.5M from Sheffield Wednesday in January, 2007.
Betis are said to have bid £1.6M, but it is understood that Charlton want at least the £2.5M Alan Pardew paid for the 6’3†central defender.
Since moving to the Valley just over 18 months ago, Madjid has become a huge fans’ favorite, and his displays have attracted interest, including reports that Newcastle may be interested.
But there are two reasons Newcastle may be tracking the Algerian.
First, they may be interested in the player himself, but also if Glasgow Rangers do sign the Algerian, that may free up Ranger’s in-demand Spanish center-back Carlos Cuellar, who has been a target of Newcastle’s for quite a while now.
With yesterday’s reports that Newcastle may also be interested in Wigan’s Emerson Boyce for £3M, it could well be that Newcastle could bring in two center-backs during the summer.
We will lose 3 central defenders before August, with Ramage and Diatta having already departed, and Rozehnal will almost certainly be leaving after Euro 2008.
Bougherra has played 21 times for Algeria with one goal and was born in Longvic, France.
Comments welcome.

Is this some kind of sick joke?
2 Tom4Nufc // Jun 6, 2008 at 10:53
I dont think we really would be interested in him, not quite up to prem standard, though i could see the theory about rangers, I hope you are right Ed!

TEN MIL FOR MILNER?
That sounds like mental money to us for a player who struggled to hold down a place in the Newcastle side last season, but The Sun claims that Liverpool are ready to pay £10m for James Milner, after deciding that £15m for David Bentley was too steep. Albert Riera of Espanyol is also a target despite being a bit ineffectual for Manchester City in a loan spell a couple of seasons ago. But Rafa does like his average players…
Anyone else see this?

No, no, no. Unfortunate name - sounds like buggerer.
6 John // Jun 6, 2008 at 11:03
we shoulkd bite there hands off for ten mill for Milner..That would be an amazing price for someone who only had a 3 or 4 assists last year…Good player, but not 10mill good…
Why are we after a charlton player. This is crazy talk..Please god go to rangers as Cuellar’s replacment ..
7 Ben_BKK // Jun 6, 2008 at 11:05
Just shows doesn’t it. It’s Arda and Aimar, or random Championship, or foreign equivalent, players…

i like how newcastle are supposedly “watching developments”
so while rangers are trying to sign this player we are apparently watching! Hmmmm
getting extremely boring now like!
i suggest we all come back in a month and discuss the people we have succesfully signed
9 Davies // Jun 6, 2008 at 11:07
Sounds like hoodilly to me. Don’t want him, can’t see Rangers using as a replacement for Cuellar if he decides to leave either.
10 HATE PRAWN S'WICHES // Jun 6, 2008 at 11:09
£10million is alot of money!! but does that not say it all “MILNER IS TALENTED” he just needs a chance the same as zog! But saying that it would be a tempting sum to turn down!! and what could we get for ten million on the right!?
SWP on right and ZOG on the left and ARDA could be used for either postion and also used in midfield!! all what ive said id still like to keep ENGLISH talent saying theres not much around these days!!
11 The Entertainers // Jun 6, 2008 at 11:09
Dont knock the championship players to soon.
Would’nt mind Lescott or Cahill in our squad.
This lad could certainly do a job as back up to a more quality CB, however that may be…
12 The Entertainers // Jun 6, 2008 at 11:13
@ HPS
Could’nt agree more mate.
Why would we want to get rid of one of the best ENGLISH players of his generation. A player with ability and bags of potential.
With the amount of foriegn names linked to us lately as kids with ‘potential’, we seem to have forgotten whats on our doorstep!
Keep Milner and Taylor and lets look at the likes of the talents in the lower divisions. Such as the lad from Carlisle, remember there are talent to find there. City found Hart out there at Shrewsbury.

i hate spurs. i am so glad we beat them all the time.
toon boy.. make sure you remind your pal that we have beat them 5 games in a row, scoring no less than 3 goals in each game. Oba has scored in the last 5 games against them.
we have scored more goals against spurs than any other team.
we have won more games than them, lost less times than them, scored more goals than them and conceeded less goals than them.
this all being done in one less season than them in the premier league so its very good that we have scored more goals and won more games.
I HATE SPURS!!!

He Sounds like a pile of dog shit to me “watching developments” I expect no decent signings and I am resigned to the fact that we are in need of a chairman that will bust the bank and sign some decent players..I can’t see Keegan putting up with this much longer surely he was told when he signed that he would be backed with mega money..why leave a cushy job with no stress to sit on the deck of a sinking ship “toontanic”.
I can’t see us landing anyone decent at the moment and teh recruitment team is one huge disaster so far..we can’t even attract a Geordie kid from Carlise !!
21 Graham // Jun 6, 2008 at 11:24
For all you so called fans slagging off lower division players - how many people had Andy Cole as a household name when Keegan signed him all those years ago?
You are living in a dream world if you think were gonna get world beaters in this club this year. World beaters play for world beating teams - which we are not.
When we progress - which we will under Keegan, we will be able to attract the better names in football, but this will take time.

Graham is right. Ruel Fox and Rob Lee did not come from”big” teams. Barton came from Wimbledon too. And Blackburn were not the greatest when we got Shearer from them and I believe Pedro was playing for some Canadian outfit. There are some good lower division players out there - what about Carlisle’s Madine? Trouble is the west Londoner Wise is looking in the wrong direction - up his own arse most of the time.

So we sold Emre for 3M! Ridiculous. When I heard 8M I could stand it but 3M with no replacement lined up is unbelievable its like FFS all over again.
His billed replacement, Aimar, would cost at least 4M and there are no assurances he’ll be any better than Emre was. Sure he was injured a LOT last year but I was expecting good things this time round under KK. What are we doing?
Next we’ll have sold Milner for 6M and Enrique for 6M both without a replacements.
Really starting to loose patience. Seems all we have done over the last few seasons is let people go.
