Newcastle Pursue French Midfielder

June 6th, 2008 · 44 Comments

Newcastle and Portsmouth are both reported to be after PSG’s midfielder Didier Digard.

didier-digard.jpg

Dider Digard - 21 year old PSG midfielder rated at £6M

The 21 year-old French midfielder has been one of PSG’s best players in what has been a disappointing season for the French club.

The France Under 21 international has been one of the shining lights for PSG, and has attracted many Premier League scouts, including those from Newcastle United.

The midfielder, who turns 22 in July, has played for every French side from 15 years old, and has so far made 4 appearances for the French Under-21 side.

He is rated around £6M, and it is being reported the fee will not put off Newcastle for the the 6’0” tall skillful player.

Portsmouth are also interested in the player, but more because they are wary of losing their own midfielder Sulley Muntari.

Didier played 15 times for PSG last season and joined them from Le Havre only last summer.

Digard started his career when 12 years old, at Le Havre in 1999, and played for Le Havre 72 times and scored 3 goals.

Didier would have been at the French club, when our own Charles N’Zogbia was there until 2004, before Bobby Robson signed him for Newcastle.

If Newcastle are truly interested in Didier, they will need to move quickly for the youngster, who has a terrific pedigree, and is tipped to be a French star of the future.

Comments welcome.

Ed - That picture isnt Digard. Digard is white.

Good, youg, realistic target and in one of the positions that need strengthening: defensive midfielder. He can also play CB too.

sounds good. but cmon how many of these articles have we seen now.

  • 3 Tom // Jun 6, 2008 at 0:23

Lol another name! If we had bought half of the reported targets listed on this site, we’d have a bigger squad than chelsea/man utd/arsenal/liverpool all put together! Looks a decent prospect but I very much doubt we’ll see him in a toon shirt

  • 4 HATE PRAWN S'WICHES // Jun 6, 2008 at 0:24

Please Ed would you do more research before putting up articles, this is the 2nd or 3rd I’ve noticed big mistakes in in recent days.

Good eough to replace Butt and Geremi as the DM.

  • 14 ToonDaft // Jun 6, 2008 at 0:43

going to be a cracker by the sounds of it - heard lots of good things, seen little tho in all honesty

  • 15 A. Typicalresponsetoplayerrumours // Jun 6, 2008 at 0:46

Even though I have only known about this player for the 30 seconds it took me to read this article and my entire knowledge of him consists of the few paragraphs above, I think it will be an absolute disgrace if we let Spurs or Portsmouth get him!!!!!! AShley is a skinflint miser!!!!! NUFC are going down the toilet. This is the worst thing in our ENTIRE HISTORY EVER!!!!!!! Yours histrionicly and knee-jerkingly.

  • 16 Tom_Toon // Jun 6, 2008 at 0:46

He’s not amazing but just a good, DM, like Butt, he’ll do his job, get stuck in and porbably go unoticed most of the game but we know it we all be different if he wasnt playing.

Hes one of those players you need rather than want.

  • 17 HATE PRAWN S'WICHES // Jun 6, 2008 at 0:49

IMO it wont take much to replace Geremi? + Butts still overall a good player but he’s getting on! good news then if its right!!! and not more media bull!!!

  • 18 Tom // Jun 6, 2008 at 0:51

marat, the midfield does look promising..

    ——–Digard———-
    SWP————-Arda
    ———Aimar———

BUT, although on paper its potentially world class, digard speaks french, SWP english, arda speaks turkish and aimar speaks spanish.. where’s the communication gonna come from? Its all very well having 4 quality individuals but if they can’t understand each other, then I doubt it would work..

  • 19 Marat18 // Jun 6, 2008 at 1:02

    good point Tom,

    but…
    see the vid :)

    Aimar———Arda

    —–Emana—–

  • 22 Spyro // Jun 6, 2008 at 1:15

I wouldnt mind missing out on arda, we have a young wonderkid at our club already, n’zogbia is a star in the making. I would like to see

    N’zogbia—Sessagnon—Milner—Lua Lua

  • 23 Spyro // Jun 6, 2008 at 1:16

guys remember we have three promising young midfielders already, all we need is a young promising DM/Box to Box player and we have our future midfield

  • 24 Tom_Toon // Jun 6, 2008 at 1:17

And whats Digard, a DM :)

But we also need a early to mid 20’s creative mid as lualua is possibly too young at the mo.

  • 25 oga // Jun 6, 2008 at 1:47

LOL……………….I dont think that either player in that picture is Digard.

  • 26 NUFCFAN // Jun 6, 2008 at 1:54

    sounds good

what about there youngster sayko - spelling?
were we not interested in him?

  • 27 dan // Jun 6, 2008 at 2:00

I wonder who the youth coach at Le Havre was 10 years ago?
    Thats who we should sign!

  • 28 petworth (DC) magpie // Jun 6, 2008 at 3:40

Dan you aint lying. That’s how we should be thinking.

Or…just drop off a big bundle of cash at le havre, sao paul, lisbon and some ivory coast squads as a means of establishing a relationship and in some cases burying the hatchet.

Set-up some type of sister-club partnership, we give them relatively small sums of cash each year and they give us their best players. We loan some of the younguns back to them and everyone is happy.

  • 29 petworth (DC) magpie // Jun 6, 2008 at 3:54

Looks like le havre weren’t all that stable in with their managers during that time but look at some of the players they produced.

    Frank Stapleton anyone?

Sorry if that posts twice looks to have disappeared

  • 31 neeraj // Jun 6, 2008 at 5:30

    its getting boring man

we change our 08/09 team in every 2 days

  • 32 bessi // Jun 6, 2008 at 7:12

hahhahahaaa yes dan i agree with you

  • 33 Eric // Jun 6, 2008 at 8:58

Apparently he is a good young prospect. Originally played for Le Havre so may know Zog. Fulham asked about him last year. Pleased to see our competition (if we really are after Digard) is no other than Portsmouth. We need caution though because the Daily Mail is running this story. The press are trying to sell Milner to Villa and Liverpool. Apparently Gudjohnson is available from Barca so the Sun thinks we will be in for him? Now that I would go for as Viduka won’t last much longer and Smith is still shite.

  • 34 The Entertainers // Jun 6, 2008 at 9:08

Does that say alot about Milner, if ‘Pool and and astute manager like O’Neil want him.
I dont care if we get SWP, Milner could thrive under a bit competion and is more versitile.

As for this French lad at 5-6 m’, i dont think so. No-one but the Toons heirachyknows how much we have in the pot. But this is a lot of money on ‘potential’. Rather spend that amount on a more established player….Like Diarra last Jan’….biggest own goal in transfer market letting him go, when we could have had him.

  • 35 Oba // Jun 6, 2008 at 9:19

Tom_Toon, just cos he is good on Football Manager mate, it doesn’t mean he’s good irl. Seems like that’s how you base all your opinions on players.

  • 36 ToonKing // Jun 6, 2008 at 9:49

seen Digard a few times, he’s a very solid player, would be a welcome addition.

  • 37 matt // Jun 6, 2008 at 10:37

haha i agree oba…. tom toon unlucky that wisey pipt you to the job better luck next time

  • 38 Gateshead Mag. // Jun 6, 2008 at 11:31

Shitting me self for how good they may be next season.

  • 40 Tom_Toon // Jun 6, 2008 at 12:54

If i had ever played on football manager it may have been.

  • 41 Leo // Jun 6, 2008 at 15:25

tom toon i think you should change your name to tom toon- doesnt play cham man

then atleast you wouldnt get those smarmy remarks

  • 42 Petworth (DC) Mag // Jun 6, 2008 at 15:39

The spuds payed 4M? for Gio. With nout for competition. He can’t be any good. All hype.

If he was any good surely there would have some Spanish clubs in for him or it would have at least cost the yids bastads a lot more.

  • 43 seetow // Jun 6, 2008 at 15:56

a good DM who can pass and tackle. would absolutely love it if he came! just maybe not for 6m..

  • 44 chuck // Jun 6, 2008 at 18:15

Whether its Emana or Digard (given up on Veloso) or whoever, there is a need for a good young defensive midfielder, some one to control the game, a young Roy Keane , a Makelele, an engine room.
Face it both Butt and Geremi are not going to be around much longer, plus neither has any pace,
its the one critical position that needs to be filled
in order for this team to be a success.
    Given
    Beye/Evans- Bridge/Enrique
    Cuellar- Taylor
    Turan- Digard N`Zogbia-Duff
    Owen/Bent Anelka/Martins
    Bougherra
    Faye
    Milner
    Emana
