£7M For Reyes Would Be Too Risky For Newcastle

We probably shouldn’t be too surprised that the Sunday Sun today are reporting that Newcastle are putting together a £7M bid for former Arsenal star Antonio Reyes.

Antonio Reyes – Newcastle readying £7M bid?

Reyes is now at Atletico Madrid and Newcastle are said to be ready to make their move, according to Spanish sources over there.

Reyes’ career has gone downhill after he spent a year on loan at Real Madrid, from 2006-2007, but the Madrid club didn’t take up their option to buy him from Arsenal last summer.

Instead, he ended up at Atletico in an £8M transfer, and played 26 times for the Spanish club last season, but surprisingly wasn’t able to score a single goal.

And there were always stories at Arsenal that Reyes couldn’t settle in London, so we cannot see how he’d be happy at Newcastle, unless he likes a swim in the cold North Sea.

The former Sevilla player is well known by Jeff Vetere, the Newcastle Director, who recommended that Real Madrid sign him last summer, but we guess the club didn’t take his advice.

We’re not at all sure Reyes would be a good signing for Newcastle, it just seems far too risky at £7M.

Comments welcome.

At least it would be a new player in and I thought he looked OK in the Arsenal team.

I don’t think its that much of a risk, £7m with Reyes. There are players I’d rather have like Arda Turan etc. but he was quite good at Arsenal.

And doing nothing is also a risk on losing out on targets or losing players who see no activity on getting a new contract.

I like the way Reyes plays – with pace and can run with the ball. Unsure of his prowess in front of goal but buying him would at least show some commtment in the transfer market

I don’t really understand this – why a) he’s lost his form so much and b) why we wouldn’t want him at that price. I feel that KK has the right managerial qualities to re-inspire Reyes.
There were some occasions when he looked great for Arsenal, he just didn’t find consistency there.

I’m not sure where we would play him though, plus – yes – it’s hard to imagine him settling at the Toon long term. If his career got remotorised he might then choose to rejoin one of the top clubs.

Arsenal fan here in peace. I don’t think he would be a good buy for you. He started well at Arsenal but his form really dipped as I don’t think he could hack the physical side of the premiership. He’s also a diver and prone to lashing out after being fouled. I always felt some of the senior arsenal players picked on him a bit though. He was homesick and didn’t like the weather so went back to Spain but still didn’t really make it at Real or Athletico. If he couldn’t settle in London and hated the weather he’s probably not going to settle in Newcastle. Cheers.

he’s kinda just breaking into the national squad atm really , which does put the 11m+ pricetag into question a bit i guess .

Could be mutually beneficial in the short term, if anyone can get the best out of him Keegan can!
He comes gets his career back on track (you can’t doubt his talent) we end up back in Europe (meaning we can challenge for players again) and he can leave to go back to Spain or Italy for a handsome profit in a couple of years!

the reason that arda didnt play is because the turkey manager doesnt like him and says that he has weaknesses, but all the turkey fans are really angry that he didnt play and want him in the next match.

or maybe……. newcastle have told them not to let him play so no one else can see him and we get a clear run in buying him with no competition.

also i think reyes could do a good job for us but not for £7m maybe £4-5m

Newcastle owner Mike Ashley has been advised by his key aids to drop Kevin Keegan and apoint Dick Advocaat as his new manager!!! (sunday Express) can’t find link!!!
Im sick of all the c**p that is printed and posted of gossip and speculation on what is happening at the club, and how many more players have we been linked with now!!! its just getting silly!

I dont think this would be the greatest of purchases.
He showed signs of a great player at The Gooners, but was very inconsistent. Even worse at Real and by all accounts worse still at Athletico !! Next stop SJP???? Hope not

When there is talk coming out of Spain that Valencia are willing to sell Villa and Silva, i would rather be looking at these guys, wheres our Spainish scout when you need him?

Stick with KK’s policy of “if they are not better than we have dont buy them”.
better to have a virtual unknown with commitment and potential than another Paycheck charlie!

Too much of a gamble. We need some stabality – he is one of these players who constantly talks to the press about his future – before he talks to the club!!!

If he didn’t settle at arsenal he certainly 100% will not settle here. Plus, the fact he has scored no goals in 20 odd games is a bit worrying.

    Verdict: avoid like the plague!!!
