The News Of The World (NOTW) are reporting topday that Newcastle United are ready to make a surprise move for Tottenham Hotspur defender Anthony Gardner.
Anthony Gardner – surely Newcastle are not interested
We’ll just have to hope that this report is as accurate as the usual NOTW reports, and that it has no truth in it whatsover. 😀
We cannot imagine how a player of Gardner’s ability can help our squad, the way we are positioned right now.
Gardner, who stands 6’5″ tall and was born in Stafford, joined Spurs from Port Vale in 2000, and made 114 appearances for the North London club.
He was sent out on loan to Everton in January, but didn’t play a single game for the Everton club during that time, and that should tell us something.
He played once for the England Under-21 side in 2001, and in 2004 made his single surprise substitute appearance for the full England side against Sweden.
Gardner, who turns 28 in September, has been pushed down the White Hart Lane pecking order in defense, after the arrival of Middlebrough’s Jonathan Woodgate in January.
It also seems like new Spanish manager Juande Ramos wants to bring in another central defender, before the summer is out, and the London club have already been linked with a move for Manchester City captain Richard Dunne.
The only positive thing we hear is that Newcastle’s new coach, Chris Hughton, who arrived from Tottenham earlier this year, and has done a really good job at Newcastle, has recommended Gardner to Kevin Keegan.
But we just cannot see how this would be a good buy for the club.
