Newcastle Could Let Given Move To Arsenal

Arsenal are ready to make a £3.5M offer for Newcastle United goalkeeper Shay Given.

Shay Given – will Newcastle be tempted to sell?

It’s another report in the News of The World today, and we think because Arsenal have been linked with Given in the past, and they are looking for a new goalkeeper, that’s the reason behind the story.

But this time Newcastle just may be willing to sell, because reseve goalkeeper Steve Harper was so consistently good at the end of last season, when Shay was out again with his groin problems.

The 32-year-old Irishman, who has played 86 times for Ireland, is fit again after being out since last February with his groin related injuries.

Arsenal want Given to fill in for the departed German Jens Lehmann, whose contract was not renewed, and he has since moved to Stuttgart.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger will not be worried by Given’s age, he turned 32 in April, because Lehmann was 33 when he signed from Borussia Dortmund.

And in any case we think both Steve Harper and Shay have taken such good care of themselves they could well play until they are 40.

Given joined Newcastle United from Blackburn Rovers for £1.5M in the summer of 1997, and he has played close to 400 games for Newcastle United, and consistently has been one of the top five Premier League keepers each season.

He’s one of Newcastle’s best ever signings, and we think the best keeper ever to play for Newcastle, just edging out the great Scot, Ronnie Simpson of the 1950s. who went on to star for Celtic under Jock Stein after leaving Newcastle in 1960.

Ronnie left Newcastle for Hibs when he was 30 years old in 1960, and after 4 seasons there, went to Glasgow Celtic from 1964-1970, and played for the Scottish giants 118 times, until he was 40 years old.

This may come as a surprise to Newcastle fans, but we wouldn’t be surprised if Newcastle let Shay move on, although of course he and his family are very settled in Newcastle.

However, the £3.5M fee seems too low.

We have two top 20 year-old goalkeepers in Hexham-born local boy Fraser Forster, and Dutchman Tim Krul, who could both back up Steve next season.

It’d break my heart to see the wee fella go, has been absolutely fantastic for us, he is one of the most modest lads you’ll meet like but he desperately wants silverware, with Arsenal he’s a realistic chance of getting it.
I hope he doesn’t go I really really don’t like, but if Arsenal are actually serious this time and to be honest they sound serious, it could be really good for him. I don’t want him to go, I really don’t but he deserves a shot at winning something, which, lets be honest it doesn’t look were going to any time soon and for everything he’s done for us, he deserves a shot at the big time.
But that said I really, REALLY don’t want him to go anywhere.

He’s still one of if not the best goalkeepers in the league, Harper has done well but Shay is better. Don’t forget he was carrying an injury last season when he probably shouldn’t have been playing, which could explain his dodgy kicking and some poorish displays. 3.5 million? Are they having a laugh or what? Don’t seel Shay! He’s a geordie.

well tbh, it may be time for Shay to move on, he isn’t the player who he used to be and he has every right to move if he wants a trophy. If he is to go then i prefer Arsenal over the other big teams.

But seriously we can’t sell him for 3.5 , get at least 10Mil.

    Your a legend Shay. 😉

    hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

    i repeat

    hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

shay given take care of himself, by what Ed means is he looks both ways when he crosses the road i think because its certainly not with reference to him seeing his body as his temple lmao

anyway sell him for 3.5 mil thats not right to be honest. demand 6mil and ignore them unless they are willing to pay it

Reluctantly I think we should sell Shay if we can get £5m plus, especially with Harper, Forster & Krull also under the current management we could use the money to buy a left back or midfielder.

He’s written himself into the Newcastle history books as one of our greatest ever players…I wouldn’t be happy if he left but at the same time we do have a lot of good goalkeepers at the club.

If he goes to arsenal then it should be for a lot more then 3.5 million . Try to do a swap for Wallcot , that would be a decent deal.

Shay has been an excellent servant of the toon, he s a great player and a top pro…………..BUT if the price was right id let him go so that Harper could be NO 1, harper deserves his time in the limelight. Plus we have Tim Krul – who is also gonna be a star someday soon to back him up !

PS: There must be someone at Arsenal we could swap given for ??????

If he has to go I’d want to see him go to one of the top 4, nothing less then he deserves but for 3.5 million?? No. Not enough, not near enough. But Keepers don’t sell for much like, even the best of the best, Gordon was the record at 9 mill or something like that.

The last couple of days have started me to worry. I know there is plenty of time left to get the players in (and now Euro ’08 has started), but the problem is that our squad was already very thin. Now we are getting more news about outgoing than incoming transfer targets. That leaves us with the fact that our squad might become even thinner than it already is (we already released a few players and we sold Emre).

Then every week there are reports about KK not being supported by the board, now there are rumours about Advocaat. It also has been mentionned a few times that KK is not fully involved with the choice of the players to get. Come on ffs he is the manager and needs the players to work with!!! Not Wise!

Ashley come out and make a statement saying that you support KK like no-one else and that you will support him by getting the players KK wants at the club.

I’m sorry right, Harpers been good enough, I still think Shay when fit is a million times better but I hate this talk of lets get rid of Given, Harper “deserves” his time in the “limelight” for..playing one good season while sitting on the bench for the rest of the time while it was Given who kept us in it, while it was Given who put up with wee Bramble and our horror defense for years but now people are talking like Given shouldn’t have been in goal at all, and lets get rid of him like. I’ve the upmost respect for Harper I do, but Given is better when he’s fit.
Harper had a good season but behind a better defense then we’ve ever had and we struggled to stay out of the relegation zone for a good chunk of the second half of the season till Keegan came a long with the magic. Same thing happened last season when Given got the horror injury, we sat above the relegation zone for a long time till he came back. These could both be a hell of a coincidence but I don’t really believe in coincidences.

But I’ve one question for everyone who thinks we should get rid of him after one injury struck season, would you like to be playing against him. I’ve been listening to some Arsenal fans talk about him and they seem to have a lot more respect for him then some of the people on here. Given deserves a hell lot more.

I would rather we carry on with two great keepers and send Krul and Forster out on loan the way Ferguson does.

Van der Saar/Kuscak: At Man Utd

    Foster/Heaton: out on loan

Why do we need to sell ?

Plus its made up anyway the news of the world linked us with two goalkeepers last week Hennessey and Westwood theyre just a joke and everyone should boycott them.

5 million fair enough but 3.5 million is a bit on the low side. I would allow Shay to go after some poor performances this season albeit with a nigling injury. We have Harper who is more or less at Given’s level plus it would trim another players wages off the bill.

    First Choice : Harper
    Reserve Keeper : Fraiser Forster
Thrid Choice Keeper : Tim Krul

Plus you have Ole Soderburg who will be pushing for playing in the reserve squad. We have more than enough Keepers.

If NUFC are serious about achieving something next season then they would be mad to offload Given. We need both Shay and Steve more than ever. We have excellent back-up in Krul and Forster. No need to disrupt that at all. This loose paper gossip really is shite.

I think Given is a brilliant keeper and have done for years…Id love him to be our next number 1 !!!

But if I were you guys, i’d be more worried about losing N’zogbia to us…especially if Alex the great goes to Barca which is looking very likely

I don’t see any reason to get rid of either Given or Harper yet. The younger keepers seem to be good but are not better at the moment than those two who have proved dependable and consistent. They could both carry on for years yet and I would hope that Given would sit and wait for his place back after all of the years Harper’s been patient behind him.

The personal side of Given is another matter – I’ve met him and he seems a canny bloke and whilst that shouldn’t be a major factor I say –
    please don’t sell him!!
