Newcastle Lead Chase For Holland’s Van der Vaart

There are rumors coming out of the Netherlands today, suggesting Newcastle United have an interest in, and are aggressively pursuing Hamburg captain and Dutch International, Rafael van der Vaart.

van-der-vaart-1.jpg

Van der Vaart – Dutch International would be great acquisition

The 25 year-old Van der Vaart was in good form last season, captaining his side to 2nd place in the Bundesliga.

He scored 10 goals last season, and of course some top teams would be interested in the player, if he becomes officially available.

Chelsea, Juventus and Valencia are said to be keeping tabs on the player, in addition to Newcastle, since the player has so far refused to sign a new contract at his German club.

Sources in Holland however have suggested today that the Dutchman is England bound, and they are saying that Newcastle are leading the chase for the player.

We’ll not have to get too excited about this, but if Newcastle can capture this player, it would be a great signing, to say the very least.

This summer, Newcastle are not too good a proposition for the very top players, and hopefully that will be vastly improved next year by this time, but we cannot complain about the club not pursuing the top players.

Van der Vaart has played 74 times for Hamburg with 29 goals, and before that at Ajax, he played for the top Dutch club 117 times with 52 goals. He is a wonderfully gifted player.

The 5’9″ attacking midfielder was born to a Spanish mother and a Dutch father in Heemskerk, in North Holland, and has so far played 53 times for Holland and scored 12 goals.

Spanish and Dutch heritage for a footballer isn’t too bad at all, and it seems all he’s missing is a Geordie grandmother. 😀

Rafael could be playing in today’s game against Italy tonight, we’ll be watching – and dreaming.

Comments welcome.

Fantastic player. This type of signing would be a great statement to show Ashley’s intent to sign quality.

This is the type of player I like to see us linked to, even if it is just a dream that we could sign him. I personally think he’ll end up at the Chelski’s or Juves of the world…

I know this is unlikely and all but i can just see something like this happening, that will show some intent and that we mean business next season. Probably won’t happen though.

He’s one hell of a playmaker, and has the sense to keep out of all the usual dutch infighting. Hope it’s not a case of “If he does well in the Euros we won’t get him” BS.

I think we have very little chance of getting him with some top clubs already registering their interest in him and the fact that he’ll probably be looking for at least Uefa Cup football if not Champion’s League matches.

However the positives are that we are still being linked with top class players despite the relatively poor season we’ve had. And you never know, with the persuasive powers of King Kev on our side, maybe, just maybe, we’ll land him.

Heard he wants a move to England but wee are trying to put a cap on our wages and I can see the likes of Chelsea, Man City, offering more than us. This is one of those signings that we need someone like Owen to really try and sell the club to him, like Shearer did when Owen signed for us. It’s a great story but I think it’s a fairy tale.

It’d be nice. I see we’ve tabled £10m for Gomis as well.

I hope that will stop everybody calling Ashley tight.

This is getting a bit repetitive. I seems that whoever gets mentioned in the transfer gossip Newcastle seem to be leading the chase, and who have we got so far?

This better not be a joke… would be over the moon if he signed for us! Remember that Sir Bobby wanted to sign him from Ajax when he was 17 years old but Fat Fred thought it was to much to spend on such a young player..

So us, Chelski & Juve in for Van Der Vaart!! what are the chances of him choosing us over the other 2, about 1.9billion – 1 me things, as for Gomis, he’s just signed an extention with his current team, so why are they reporting that we’ve bid 10million for him!!!
These crap-loids are doing my swede in, why can’t they just f**koff with there crap & leve us the f**k alone…

If they wanted to push the price up they link him with really big clubs.

Linking him to us pushes his price down if anything.

This bloke is WORLDCLASS and I dont bandy that over used phrase about lightly. This is the ONE signing I have preyed for time in, time out!

The last time he was up for sale the footballing world expected him to go to the AC Milans – Real Madrids – Manchester United’s of this world and he quietly slipped away to Hamburg for €5 Euros. Go figure huh.

I keep saying it but KK is still a great Hamburg legend held in the highest regard. Surely we have SOME chance?

    Please GOD lol gan on

    Highly likely imo.

There is no way this would happen. I think ed is getting peoples hopes up when he reports on rumours like this as the younger fans start creaming themselves and are then distraught when said player goes to a team that are actually after him. I dont doubt there is a lot going on behind the scenes but if wise and kk are after players like van der vart they are wasting valuable time cos he wont come.

every day we seem to be leading the chase on at least 3 different players, most of which are unlikely to come to us. Van der Vaart is out of our league at the moment. Arda Turan is a possiblity but need to be quick of the mark with this one. Can see Gomis coming depending of what sort of Euro 2008 he has.

Well, when he left Ajax, there were loads of clubs after him, but he decided to go to hamburg, who weren’t even in Europe then. I’m sure they were mid table. So I think we have every chance to sign him, as he’s not a big club follower. However, i’m sure i’ve read that he wants to play for Juve, albeit though, in the press!

Just a ploy to hike his price for another team that can pay fat wages and offer European footie to nip in and buy him. Getting the impression that the press and agents are using NUFC as patsy’s.
