Newcastle United seem to be stepping up their bid for some of their top targets, and the Evening Chronicle today is reporting that Newcastle have bid £10M for for St Etienne’s 22-year-old 6ft striker Gomis.
Bafe Gomis – £10M bid for the explosive French striker
But Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is now showing a keen interest in Gomis.
Wenger is concerned that their current striker Emmanuel Adebayor may join Mathieu Flamini, and join AC Milan in Italy.
Gomis of course has only recently signed an extension to his contract with the St Etienne club, but he is still expected to move on following the completion of Euro 2008.
Director of Football Dennis Wise, Vice-President Tony Jimenez and Technical Coordinator Jeff Vetere have twice traveled to France to run the rule over the Frenchman, but the player has already mentioned that he would prefer a move to Italy.
Manager Kevin Keegan and Terry McDermott have also checked out the striker.
Gomis scored two goals in his International debut recently against Ecuador, and could well star for the French side during the summer.
France begin their Euro 2008 tournament today against Romania in Zurich, and Gomis is expected to start up front for the French.
We’ll be watching that game, but if Gomis plays well during the tournament, that will probably mean he will be less likely to arrive at Newcastle.
Comments welcome.

Comment #2Well, if we cant have Eto’o, then this guy would be my choice, no doubt about it. This lad can hit the back of the net without thinking about it.
What a signing for the toon – IF it happens!!!!!

Comment #3I doubt he’ll start the match, what with Henry, Anelka and Benzema in the team…could play in the match, but I think he’s unlikely to start.
Would love to get him though, looks like a good player. Wenger can bugger off, you’d think he’d be more wary, with the possibility of the 6 plus 5 rule coming in in a few years…

Comment #4IMO he has only signed an extention to his contract, so St. Elienne would get a better price!! when clubs came in for him!!

Comment #7Would be pleased but a) strikers aren’t the most important thing yet
b) even if we did Gomis I wouldn’t want us to lose Martins. Unlike some Toon fans I can’t see many players being able to make more impact than Martins

Comment #8When speculation started about Gomis leaving his club, the price being bandied about was £24 MILLION, so not sure a bid of 10 mill is going to clinch the deal
He is supposed to be better than Torres (£24 mill) and hailed as the next Drogba (£24 million plus to Milan!! Would still love to see him in black n white at SJP!!
beye the great

Comment #10I think it’s a spot of window dressing, I have been advocating buying him since he was a nobody in the French league but I will be astonished if we get him now.

Comment #11If we get him then WOW, however not likely to happen, but I guess stranger things have happened at the toon… lets hope the recruitment team’s employment finally shows something worth paying them for… Gomis

Comment #12Would be fantastic, but what is the chance that we will get him. Perhaps we should hope that he won’t get any minutes at the Euro’s, but that would be too bad for him tho’. I really rate him very highly and I think he could, like Martins did 2 years ago, make an immense impact at St. James Park.

Comment #13For our needs I still think Cisse is by far the safer bet, but I understand why people want this player. He lived in England and married a Welsh hairdresser so will be used to everything about England, Gomis hasnt.
We need superstar midfielders and they probably will have to be unproven players in the premiership, we dont want three quarters of the squad settling in to life in the premiership the odds are it will go wrong for us.

Comment #15This sounds so pessimistic but I’ve been so used to hearing these stories over the past few months, until I get home, flick on Sky Sports News and see Gomis standing on St James pitch holding up a black and white shirt I’m not going to let myself believe it!
If this and the VDV rumour are true then I’m delighted we appear to be acting far more aggressively in the transfer market. Gomis doesn’t look like a gamble for me. He’ s a big powerful like who would be the ideal foil for Owen or Martins.

Comment #18Caution! It is an Alan Oliver story and relies on THE source WITHIN St James Park. Who did they say the groundsman was? Or was it the barman?

Comment #19So some think Cisse instead of Gomis – we may stand more chance of getting Cisse. So he married a Welsh hairdresser. In that case he knows all about the short and back and side curlies but – as far as scoring is concerned does he know his way around the box? Gomis would be an ideal capture but do not think they will accept Smith as part of the deal!

Comment #20i know theres a lot of scepticism but hey at least its good news for once! being linked more firmly with van der vaart and gomis and selling ameobi is a lot better than last week being linked with boyce and that charlton cb, just hope its not all chronicle paper talk!

Comment #24Doesn’t matter if we sign Gomis or not, as he won’t score many goals if we don’t have any midfielders creating chances for him!

Comment #25All these superstars being linked to us is just a ploy to sell tickets (because we cannot buy someone like we normally do)!!
There is no way top players like Van Der Vaart and up and coming players are going to sign for Newcastle, if any other decent side who can offer European football comes in for them.

Comment #30another load of bollocks. i think that wisey has cracked it, he is flying all round the world – twice, having holidays and getting paid big bucks to do it. makes me puke. I thought his job was finding talent befor it costs a fortune – this guy is already worth 20 million. Thats prob why we have bid ten million for him, just so they can say, well, we tried to sign gomis!! i know, why dont we bid 40 million for ronaldo – we wont get him either for that price, but again ,mort can turn round and say, well, we were going to give 40 million but we missed out cos he went for 80 million in the end. Christ, i could bid ten million for gomis too. we should be signing up the players we already have but are on the verge of letting leave on free transfers. mid field and the wings must be our priority. there is only butt and geremi that we are confident will still be here come the start of the season. emre gone, duff going, milner has alot of interest, zogs does too. owen, taylor, harper, martins contracts all fcuked up. given on arsenals radar. christ!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ps, oh yeah, and ameobi going too. ha ha. its ok though cos we have ‘maybe’ signed a 15 yr old kid for a price that could rise to nearly a million if he does well, ha ha.

Comment #32A reported £10 million offer for a player Arsenal are said to be interested in.This isnt going to happen im afraid.Ashley needs to speculate in the transfer market to accumalate season ticket money.Otherwise he may be in for a shock when he takes his seat for the first home game next season.

Comment #34I think we’re dreaming but you have to go for your dreams and someday you’ll might wake up saying..I can’t believe it I am living my dream! – What I mean to say is if we manage to capture Gomis then I’ll do back-flips! The guy is clearly talented and would be excellent for the EPL. He would be on the starting eleven for all if not most teams in the EPL and Europe. Massive potential and very young indeed. I just hope we somehow pull it off…please GOD!!

Big headline then in smaller print Arsenal also chasing.
Thats that then no prizes for guessing which club Gomis will choose.

Comment #36Like to see him in the black and white, looks like a future star.
Prices of 24m-17m. 15mm. bandied about mean nothing, as BILL f. SPLASH THE CASH, aptly puts it “window dressing”
The press would as we all know prefer to exagerate, sells papers.
Depending on his performance for France in the next couple of weeks, his price could go either way.
Recon somewhere around 11m. to 12m.
So lets see,
Gomis 12m
Turan 9.5m
Cuellar 7.5m
Evans 7.om
Bougharra 2.5m
Reyes 7.5m
Shorey 5.5m
Emana 6.5m
58m
outs
Milner 7
Duff 6
Emre 3.5
Carr 2.5
Ramage 1.5
Ameobe 4
58 – 24.5 = 33.5m price of a contender

Comment #40Saw Gomis for France now… Alan Smith would have done it better frankly… Looked slow and not worth any 10M… The only good news about that might be that he didn´t realy drag more clubs to him…
