Turan Toast of Turkey Tonight

Arda Turan, who is a Newcastle United target this summer, scored a stunning winner in injury time tonight, to give Turkey a dramatic victory over hosts Switzerland in Basle.

Arda Turan – toast of Turkey tonight

There is no secret that Newcastle have already held talks with Galatasaray about the left winger, who looked very good tonight for Turkey. The commentators said that Turan was the young star of Turkey, and that he was interesting Newcastle.

He’ll be interesting a lot more clubs after his stunning winner tonight – Tottenham where are you?.

Arda is a good physical player, and seemed full 0f energy throughout and seemed to have very good skill on the ball. He was obviously up for the game, as he was seen urging on his team soon after the interval.

But it was right at the end that he showed his real class, by taking the ball inside from the left wing and then hitting a right foot shot.

The ball seemed to get a deflection, and lifted over Swiss goalkeeper, Diego Benaglio, to give Turkey an unlikely 2-1 win, after being 1-0 down at the interval.

We’ll just have to hope that Newcastle have some agreement with his club, that we at least get first refusal, but it may be hard for Newcastle to capture any player, who is a star at the tournament, since other clubs will no doubt become interested.

Turan worked his socks off tonight in a difficult game, played under difficult conditions, especially in the first half during a rain downpour, but anything is possible when you have class, and he certainly produced the goods for his country tonight – that’s for sure.

And it was good to see Turkey’s captain Emre, who has not officially signed for Fenerbehce yet, jumping up and down at the end with Turan, in pure joy at their win.

Emre was injured during training this week, and may be out of the tournament.

For the 21 year-old, this was an unbelievable goal for his country, who are now in with a chance to get through the group stages of Euro 2008.

Turkey have 3 points, the same as the Czech Republic, and the two teams meet on Sunday in Geneva.

Another Newcastle target on show tonight was Swiss striker Eren Derdiyok.

The 19 year-old striker, who plays for FC Basel (where tonight’s game was played) had a decent game, and looked a good front man.

Eren is 6’3″ tall, and turns 20 tomorrow, and wouldn’t be a bad acquisition for the club, as one for the future.

But if we are interested in him let’s sign him now, before he becomes a star in the future.

That’s advice we should have taken with Turan.

Comments welcome.

Arda impressed me tonight, wish they could have got him on the ball a bit more to be honest. His goal was good and he looks like the type of player we’ve been deprived of lately – someone who can get the fans on the edge of their seat.

Doubt we’ll get him on this form though, the big boys will be watching.

im so pissed off! wise and co, our ‘recruitment team’ have pissed about for weeks and have made no progress thus far and now one of our top targets who looks like a stunning player goes and scores a great goal, rocketing his price up and alerting top clubs! we have no chance of signing him now!

Arda was really impressive, and I fear bigger teams will get him ahead of us. Keeping my fingers crossed that we are in the driving seat and will get him. If its correct that Derdiyok wants to play with Owen we should sign him straight away. He too looked class. Strong in the air, good speed and movement, good awareness. And only 20! Sign him now.

yeah Arda was very solid today, even despite the rain, unlike our players he actually has an end product, good passing and creativity all night. sign him up. !!

also i see that Digard is having a medical at Boro, why are we not after him ??

Derdyok seemed crap to me tonight..don’t really want him..
