Milner Closer to Leaving Newcastle for Liverpool?

News today in the Daily Mirror that says Liverpool have won the race to sign Newcastle United winger James Milner.

james-milner-54.jpg

James Milner – is he even for sale?

We didn’t even think James was for sale, and when he was interviewed last week, all he talked about was next season at Newcastle, and how he was looking forward to it.

But there has been consistent reports in the press that if a club bids £7M for Milner, the Newcastle club will consider letting him move on.

We don’t want to lose some of our best players, and we think James, at just 22, could have a great future at Newcastle.

Unless Kevin has pinpointed James, as one player he would be willing to let leave the club, it’s mysterious that these stories on James leaving the club, keep appearing.

The news is that Liverpool Manager Benitez and Anfield chief executive Rick Parry have made contact with Newcastle and offered Jermaine Pennant in part-exchange for Milner.

The clubs are now said to be negotiating how much cash Liverpool must also pay for the £7M-rated Milner, who signed a new four-year contract with the Tyneside club last August.

Pennant, 25, is now surplus to requirements on Merseyside, after failing to make an impact after a £6.7M move from Birmingham in the summer of 2006.

There was even news yesterday that Kevin Keegan wanted to ensure James Milner got a new contract before the start of the season, so it’s hard to know if there is any truth in these rumors.

But one thing that is surprising Newcastle fans, is the number of players leaving the club this summer, with Shay Given now reported to be potentially leaving for Arsenal in a proposed £5M deal.

We hardly think these moves of some of our good players will be well received by Newcastle’s huge fan base.

It does mean the club will need to bring in quite a few players in the summer, with so many departures taking place.

Let us know what you think of this.

who the hell wants pennant when we have james milner!!! pennant cannot cross a ball, he cant beat defenders whereas milner can do both much better. i wouldnt mind if given moved on as he has been a great servant for this club and i think it could be his time to move on to bigger things. i would love him to stay but we do have harper, forster and soderberg. i would like to have a part exchange for some arsenal players though in return for given if it did go through. maybe gilberto…

Not sure about this one. A swap with Pennant would be a big NO for me tho…Milner is potentially a good player, but needs to learn to play his footy simpler IMO.

We have to be careful regarding wholesale changes.

The likes of Given will go down in history as one of Newcastles greatest keepers. However if HE wanted to go then that would change matters.

But Milner, i wouldnt sell him full stop.
As for Pennant in return, surely thats just Rafa’s way of having a joke.

This whole preseason is making a mockery of KK comments on we only need 3-4 top players to add to this squad. What squad?

At this rate we are going to need a dozen players or so!….

Paper twaddle BS lads, dont belive a word of it.

Milner is better than Pennant, so we would be mugs to swap him.

If we let anymore go without replacements lined up, we wont have a team to compete next season!

This rag is full of crap to say the very least

Seems absolutely barking that Newcastle are letting go their best players, hiking the season ticket prices up, and not seeming in the hunt for top players.

I think the Toon fans are being taken for a very expensive ride!

Does anyone know what Mike “Fray Bentos” Ashley is doing, This is getting really worrying now, Just like he’s selling as many good players as he can making himself more money and then scarpering with a massive profit

Oh well shit mediocre relegation candidates just like old times

    —————– Steve Harper—————–
    –Beye—-Gardner—Dawson—-Riise—
    —-Pennant—Geremi—James Harper—Duff—-
    —————-Bent——Smith———–

KK Deserves so much better than this and now apparently Carroll is now leaving!

So he’s gone from next big thing to overrated shite on the evidence of one match against a decent everton side who finished 7 places above us in the league.

And i love the moral high ground from our board clamping down on Barton, Yet our executive director sits there in his posh suit in his london office with numerous assult charges and a disciplinary record that the Don Revies Leeds would envy

What a Joke this is becoming, Christ Kev you are the only thing we have left to give us hope our 2 best youngsters leaving Zog and Jimmy, One of the main reasons we did anything in the last 11 years as Shay single handedly won us 20 points a season, Owen, Oba and Taylor no nearer to signing contracts, The mackems with a £50m transfer kitty, and Jermaine Pennant!

I only watch certain other teams and follow particular players, I have watched Pennant a lot at Liverpool when following Torres’ progress, Pennant is usually a sub and usually turns games around, I think he is quality, he does have the occassional poor game though, but they are few and far between.

Rafa is on odd bloke, it doesnt always come down to player quality, there appears to be an ‘in’ crowd at Liverpool, I often get the feeling that Gerrard is now bigger than the club, which is holding them back.

I even think I have seen players not passed to when they have been in better positions to favour his mates such as Crouch, I felt Gerrard had it in for Bellamy from day one and just missed him out on the field, so he was hardly played and then sold, Rafa had it in for Cisse because he was the previous managers signing, stuck him on the wing then he was a poor scoring striker-what a failure! and Pennant even after a blistering game is sub again next match, a very odd bloke and odd team.
Kuyt works hard but is nowhere near the quality needed in that team, yet he is nearly always in the starting line up, Gerrard’s choice when consulted by Rafa? I wonder.

Dont judge Pennant by Liverpool selling him, if he doesnt get on with Gerrard or Rafa turns against him he will be out.

Ideally I would like Milner and Pennant for that position and Pederson and Nzogbia or Turan for the opposite wing-money no object, as they are different types of players.

i have no idea what is going on at newcastle anymore……..our club is complete disaray. this is poor timing and judgment by the board where at the same time sending out vastly increased priced season tickets!!!!!!! i dont think i can renew until i see what we have got left. i agree, clearly keegan is not in the loop and has no say in anything by the looks of it!! not looking to sell any players eh!! ha ha This given thing seems a bit strange too, why sell him for 5 million and then fork out 6 million for a jock replacement when we have plenty of cover anyway. Loosing shay to me is no big deal, i think give it to harper and crul/foster etc on the bench to get them into the squad. shay must be on 80 gradn a week or something. isay its fine to sell him really.

Yes we hear how good Forster is and as i havent been to any recent reserve games i couldnt comment

But haven’t we been fed this before about the next local hero Ameobi, Ramage, Beherall and McClen to name a few who are going to be first teamers until they get a game and a way out of their depth

Krul was Good against Palermo but we cannot say if that wasnt a one off and Soderberg was the most pointless signing in our history worse than the Ronny Johnsen farce.

I think if i was selling a Keeper it would be Harper, He is older and no where near as good as Given

Milner will continue to improve. He was showing promise early in the season but faded at the end of the season probably because he was playing too much.

Fact that Liverpool has shown interest in him means that Newcastle MUST keep him. He is good and Liverpool knows that.

Well several weeks have passed since the end of the season and trying to take stock of what is going on seems to elude me right now.

I get up everyday clock onto the newsnow newcastle site and scour all the latest snippets of news and to be honest in the last 5 weeks I can’t remember 1 link that has made me think positivly about our situation as a club.

I think the signals that the club give out these days is all wrong and other clubs must pick up on that, we are (if truth be told) a shambles right now hence lots of our players are being tapped up by other clubs.

How we are meant to attract decent players right now is beyond me and I think if the exit door keeps revolving we will be in a serious shape come the new season.

So what changes need to be made….first off sack Dennis Wise & Co,next Ashley come out and speak about his intent (i.e ambitions, plans, future),Third tie up all the outstanding contracts,Fourth spend some money instead of penny pinching..we seem to be turning into another Ashley retail outlet.

All rumours gents. You really need to chill. Until you see Milner in a Liverpool shirt his sale will remain unconfirmed.

By the way, I also rate Pennant, so I wouldn’t mind if there was a switch.

If the Club start slapping around statements about who they intend to sign, other interested clubs step up their interest and beat us to it (Luka Modric – case in point).

Lets not all fly into a blind panic about our pie loving owner. He’s hardly likely to buy a business and then make it an unattractive prospect for potential future sale. He will back Keegan.

Agree with Toonking, we should take the money if it is being offered and the player.

We have so many problem areas in our team we mustnt get hung up on keeping one player, he is a good player for us but everyone has their price, remember the sale of Andy Cole?

We need so many players in and if Milner’s sale buys two defenders and gives us a decent replacement on the wing then that was good business, that leaves Ashley’s pot and the sale of Given and Duff to buy the other midfielders and one striker we need so badly. Lets start being a bit better with the money and leave room to buy a player in the January window if we have an injury somewhere, instead of the Freddy days, he would have gone out and paid the earth for Gomis and no-one else.

I agree Milner is overrated, also that Pennant is underrated too. I still wouldn’t swap them though.

Milner doesn’t seem to have a natural position. Not quick enough and not a good enough crosser of the ball to be a great winger, not a good enough finisher to be a great striker, not enough vision to be a great attacking midfielder.

I’d sell him for £7m upwards.

Ericles-agree the club is doing itself no favours with the fans or potential signings by letting the press run wild with stories.

Imagine being a player who is on the move, does Newcastle look a good prospect if the press were to believe:

    The manager has little say.

They are cutting wages as low as possible across the board not doing an Arsenal which is to try and have everyone on more equal pay which would involve paying defenders more at Newcastle.

The existing players may be leaving so they have no idea who will or will not be in the team as contracts havent been signed.

There may be a change of chairman.

The club looks like it is being shaped up to be sold.

Season ticket prices are being put up.

There isnt a huge pot for the transfer window.

Newcastle Club officially denies none of this.

I think the club know what they’re doing. They are looking at raising a bit of cash by selling players that have not done much for us over the past couple of seasons. Milner however is not one of those, when fit he is a good player and should be kept if only as a squad player. We need to be selling the likes of Duff, Smith, Cacapa and Ameobi. We can then look to bring in the quality signings that KK and the board want.

    Milner = A model pro

Pennant = A drink driving ex jail bird.

With regards to Given, some “fans” on this site are very very fickle indeed. Get rid huh? like someone stated earlier that guy helped keep us in the top flight at times.
He could have gone to Arsenal years ago but stayed loyal to our club. When he says, “I dont want to leave, I love the area and even my kids are born Geordies” I think that speaks volumes. He is closing in on the record for most ever appearences for NUFC. Yet people say … SELL HIM? ffs!
Id agree IF he was no longer a top keeper OR if he wanted to go in order to get some sort of silverware before he retires.
Wenger is no mug, he knows with Given between the sticks Arsenal would improve!

    Keep Milner

    Keep Given

    Sell, Smith !

I don’t think i have ever been this uninterested in a new season. Yet i’ll still pay my money to go watch mediorce players just to line their pockets with money. Makes me sick.

If Ashley and his team of merry men screw this pre-season up, we are going down.
The fact that ticket prices have been increased after the crud season we’ve just had, doesn’t bode well for sensible decisions !!

@Craigg – cause nobody in the right mind would buy Geremi. We have to wait for Fat Sam to take over at Blackburn, so he can take Cacapa, Barton, Smith and Geremi off our hands.

A winger’s main job is to cross the ball, both Geremi and Milner are terrible at it, which is why the club is activitely trying to get rid of them, and why they are bidding for the likes of Arda
