Keegan Will Need To Decide Milner Future

June 13th, 2008 by Ed Harrison · 53 Comments

The news is now incessant that Newcastle are willing to let their young winger James Milner, move on in the summer.

James Milner - may leave Newcastle this summer

The latest news on James is that his agent wants to have talks on a new contract, when Keegan returns from his holidays, within two weeks.

There seems no urgency for the matter to be resolved, but we only renegotiated James’ contract last summer, and it is for 4 years so we’re not sure why it needs to be renegotiated so soon.

News today that Liverpool are willing to pay £7M cash for Milner, and will not now offer Jermaine Pennant in part exchange.

But we just don’t understand why Newcastle would allow James to go, at this early stage of his career.

He’s played well for Newcastle over the last two seasons, and we’re at a loss as to why we would sell him.

We expect this to be sorted out once Kevin returns, which is within a couple of weeks.

But we are certainly moving lots of players out this summer, and we will need to sign quite a few new players.

If indeed we lose Milner, Given, Smith, Barton and Duff to those players Ramage, Diatta, Carr, Rozehnal, Emre and Troisi, who have already left the club, then the squad will be changed drastically.

That would be 11 players moved out in the summer – it already stands at 6.

That’s not what we expected when Kevin said he just needed to bring in 3-4 players to augment the squad.

So there’s obviously still a lot of transfer business to be conducted by Newcastle United this summer, most of it on the incoming side.

Comments welcome.

I think the club realise that throwing money around doesnt bring success so now they’re going to basically start again but i’d be surprised if we sell Milner as he, along with n’zog, taylor, owen and possibly martins are the players we need to build our team around.

But if we can get a decent player from liverpool not someone like riise then i wont be too disappointed if we sell milner. I wouldnt mind Pennant tbh, his delivery is much better than Milners although Milners work rate is better.

  • 2 Leo // Jun 13, 2008 at 11:01 AM

    new contract?

hes only just had a new one i thought?

anyway keep milner we cant loose him as you say this early in his career, we always let our players go at the wrong time

2 weeks until keegan is back? that was said over 2 weeks ago when he was coming home

  • 3 WIGAZ // Jun 13, 2008 at 11:07 AM

We should keep him! he could play inside as well as out wide! if he goes for £7m & we use that money to buy either SWP or Quasmera then i’ll be pleased! but i think Quasmera will go to chelsea now big phil is there as well as deco! I’d rather have those two than lennon, saw rumour on sky sports that somebody saw bentley coming out if sjp! BS!!!!!

  • 4 CRAIGG // Jun 13, 2008 at 11:07 AM

Milner doesnt want to leave if he is talking about a new contract and that should be that

His crossing will improve as will his goal record just persist instead of kicking him out and watching him flourish somewhere else ALA Shearer, Carrick, Bryan Robson and Alan Thompson did when they were rejected as youngsters, Carroll could be another wasted talent he’s had one match give the kid a chance

We shouldnt have to be talking about selling Milner, Given, N’Zogbia or even Smith, The money should be there for Kev just like was obviously promised when he agreed to come back

  • 5 wilko // Jun 13, 2008 at 11:08 AM

Unbelievable if there is any truth in this latest key player to be speculated about.
at the very least it shows the current squad has some extremely good players due to other clubs wanting them for their own. HANG ON TO OUR BEST PLAYERS NUFC WE IMPLORE YOU

  • 6 Spyro // Jun 13, 2008 at 11:09 AM

if we get 7 million, then we should sell him and put money towards Turan and Arshavin as both are better than Milner. However, any less than 5.5 million and we should keep him and play him as an AM

  • 7 broon ale // Jun 13, 2008 at 11:10 AM

so keegan has had a month on holiday.??

he had 3 years on holiday prior to taking over at newcastle.

i cant help thinking that keegan is far to important when it comes to convincing players to join newcastle and we are missing the boat here by putting faith in the 3 wise men.

we should be taking advantage of keegans ability to convince players to come here.

a month holiday is a bit excessive considering compared to other managers he had a far shorter season.

  • 8 CRAIGG // Jun 13, 2008 at 11:16 AM

I wish KK would speak to the potential signings like he used to he is one of the most enthusiastic, Persuasive people in football

He persuaded Shearer, Lee, Ginola, Asprilla, Cole, Bracewell to come by selling the club, its fans and its aspirations and also the City

What does that cross eyed runt know about the north east, the clubs history or the fans ?

    ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!!!

  • 9 Pip Gardner // Jun 13, 2008 at 11:18 AM

Milner has a great attitude but he really is a horrible player to watch, has such a lack of pace it’s embarassing, can’t beat a man, can’t cross, hardly scores and when he does it’s usually flukey like the Sunderland game.

I was talking to another fan that day and he said that goal was so horrible we would rather us have lost.

  • 10 liamtoonbirchy // Jun 13, 2008 at 11:19 AM

kepp him 100%, duff is hopefully going, replace him with srna and then we have milner, zoggy and srna for wings. If turan signs we can use his as an AM or winger.

  • 11 geordiekk // Jun 13, 2008 at 11:24 AM

what we need to know really is when kk is back from holliday it seems nothing is happening till then so has anybody got any idea when he’s back?????

  • 12 CRAIGG // Jun 13, 2008 at 11:25 AM

You’d rather we lost to sunderland than score a flukey goal ?

  • 13 Spyro // Jun 13, 2008 at 11:28 AM

    @ Craigg

was just wondering the exact same thing

    ???

  • 14 craig chisholm // Jun 13, 2008 at 11:29 AM

is kk really taking a month off, now at a time when we need to be changing things so drastically and also while the euros are also on? He must still be in constant contact about targets etc. Amazingly bad time to take off for a month otherwise. I would have thought grab ten days or something at the end of the season. he should be at his desk by now you would have thought.
Anyway, i like milner and think he is good and will get better. We should keep him as he also seems like a model pro too. sell duff and smith, chrsit i would let smith move on for 2 million and also duff for 2.5 jsut to get shot of them. barton is finished too as it would appear that emre is – once he gets over this current injury – jesus!! he’s as bad as dyer!! butt is getting on too so basically we like have er not much of a mid field at the minute. Zogs is gonna be world class ,we must hang anto the fella. in the middle we need a holding man in the engine room (would have been barton alas) and a world class playmaker. Maybe move zogs in to middle left and turan on the left wing?? sell viduka and bring in crouch too. sign up taylor, bring in bridge or shorey too. i prefer bridge but it seems like shorey is the one mot fans prefer. i agree with most of the players that we are trying to dump and we should add a few more too but i am just worried that we are signing no-one at all.

  • 15 Geordie Nick // Jun 13, 2008 at 11:33 AM

    pip gardner= wanker

milners goals all fluke???? man utd??? birmingham????

  • 16 THELONGSHANKS // Jun 13, 2008 at 11:34 AM

    DONT SELL MILNER!

  • 17 Geordie Gerrard7 // Jun 13, 2008 at 11:34 AM

sell him, bring in turan and larrsson

  • 18 James // Jun 13, 2008 at 11:37 AM

KK is back from holiday this weekend, don’t believe all the 2 weeks from now nonsense.

As for Milner, the position is the club are happy to keep him, but if we are offered good money (£7 million cash), then the club are willing to let him go.

KK has his eye on at least 4 replacement wingers.

  • 19 Ericles // Jun 13, 2008 at 11:41 AM

If Milner wants the “glory” of Liverpool then sell him. If he wants to stay at NUFC and play for his place then let him. I would prefer a pacy and classy right winger though, a good crosser, and can handle the left too. MIlner can play both wings which is handy but it is time he really made his mark and I am not he has or will.

  • 20 Sun'lun's Burnin' // Jun 13, 2008 at 11:42 AM

i dont know why people are so Pro-Milner, he does F*ck all!! pennant would provide assists nearly every game id bet! plus he chips in with goals aswell, people say he doesnt defend, he shouldnt need to! hes a winger!

sell sell sell – clean slate fresh faces, cant be any worse than last season lol

  • 21 Pip Gardner // Jun 13, 2008 at 11:43 AM

Sorry my idea of a winger is someone who gets the fans on the edge of their seat by running at defenders with skill and pace, obviously you guys prefer someone who runs like a dead gazelle, gets to the full back, goes one way then the other then the other trying to beat them then passes the ball back to the full back.

And it wasn’t me who would rather lose than score a flukey goal, it was another fan I spoke to on the day. I was pleased with the point.

  • 22 James // Jun 13, 2008 at 11:47 AM

People love Milner for his attitude and his energy.

But look past the black & white for a second, he is paid to CROSS the ball and he has ALWAYS BEEN CRAP at this.

I’d be happy to have him replaced by a top class international, because Milner will never be a top class international.

  • 23 CRAIGG // Jun 13, 2008 at 11:50 AM

Wheres this crap about Milner not having any pace or the ability to beat a man come form because ive sen him live on god knows how many occasions and he certainly lacks neither

His crossing is poor yes not as bad as some say but needs improvement, Do you not think that if O’Neill, Benitez and Southgate thought he was as bad as some say they would all rate him so highly

He is quick not Lennon or Walcott fast but quick.

Versatile good on either wing, in the middle, Left or right of a forward three, Or even up front as Souness used to do

Good two footed scored some amazing goals with either foot Man Utd, Villa, Brum, Spurs, Sunderland, Stoke for example

Some memorable crosses Palermo, Celta Vigo, Villa, Bolton, Watford, Sheffield Utd, Spurs for example

Also had a great record of picking out players from set pieces under Roeder with Taylor and Sibierski in particular scoring from Milners set pieces

I wish the club had brought out a season review of 06-07 as most of you would see how many goals milner set up and scored and his all round contribution.

16 assists and 5 goals last season
5 assists and 3 goals his season which isnt bad as he was injued for a large chunk of the season

And he is settled in the north east, As many of the stupid foreign suggestions on this blog would moan about the weather and want to leave

  • 24 geordiekk // Jun 13, 2008 at 11:52 AM

seb larsson is the man to replace him milner does next to nothing dont fancy pennant much though

  • 25 Mac // Jun 13, 2008 at 11:53 AM

7 Miliion for Milner then buy Arsavin for 8 now that sounds like a good deal to me

  • 26 geordiekk // Jun 13, 2008 at 11:57 AM

Arsavin played on the left when av seen him play anyone know if he plays on the right

  • 27 James // Jun 13, 2008 at 12:00 PM

Arsavin and Turan are both left wingers.

  • 28 Sun'lun's Burnin' // Jun 13, 2008 at 12:01 PM

Larsson is a centre mid you fool! he would not replace milner!

havnt been impressed with arshavin either from what ive seen. maybe you lot have seen something i havent, i hope so!

id be well happy if we got pennant and a few mil, would be a great deal for us.

still hopeful on arda! howay KK get off your arse sunning yourself and do your bloody job man!!!!!!

  • 29 geordiekk // Jun 13, 2008 at 12:03 PM

larsson has played right wing for brum all season

  • 30 CRAIGG // Jun 13, 2008 at 12:04 PM

Arshavin was awesome in the UEFA Cup final against Rangers playing just off the front man

  • 31 liamtoonbirchy // Jun 13, 2008 at 12:04 PM

keep milner sign srna have em both challenge for right mid

  • 32 Mac // Jun 13, 2008 at 12:04 PM

Iknow alot of people want to keep Milner. I think he is a great lad,he has a great attitude he’ll work his socks off every game and yes he had potential but he’s had potential for years and just hasn’t improved at all. Liverpool want him because they know they can sell him on and that’s it no one wants pennant. Liverpool want to buy Milner this week and then use him as a barganing chip to force through the Barry deal. Milner is a mid table player and if we want to improve we have to face facts and get rid of players like this. Sorry to say it but someone had to

  • 33 James // Jun 13, 2008 at 12:06 PM

Mac – I heard the same thing. They planned to buy him and sell him to Villa straight away to get Barry.

  • 34 CRAIGG // Jun 13, 2008 at 12:14 PM

Thats another beautifilly concocted pile of bollocks that only the Sun can lay claim to.

If Liverpool had any sense they would give Carson with about £8m and they would get Barry.

  • 35 liamtoonbirchy // Jun 13, 2008 at 12:16 PM

I believe Larsson and Turan could possibly come, add Srna and a top quality defensive midfielder like De Jong of Holland then our midfield would be the best its been in years. Add chermitti to be an impact player, that is 4 great additions to our midfield and a young star leaving just a left back, top class centre half and striker needed. That would be great for next season!

  • 36 ToonTimbo // Jun 13, 2008 at 12:17 PM

i’m not a fan of milner simply because of his lack of pace! We dont pose enough of a threat from midfield! liverpool can have him! Hav a look at marko marin on youtube!!!!!!!!!!!! some1 agree with me hes class

  • 37 Hate Prawn Sandwiches // Jun 13, 2008 at 12:24 PM

It says it all Milner is has got talent and Quality especially if Liverpool and Villa want him they can see his potenial! we should be getting rid of Duff, Smith, Geremi out of the midfield! just my opinion!!!

  • 38 ScottyT // Jun 13, 2008 at 12:28 PM

craigg – post no 23.. ttly agree spot on i echo these words.

  • 39 Gooderz // Jun 13, 2008 at 12:36 PM

Milner hasn’t been given any sort of a platform to perform on over the past couple of seasons with many team performances fairly pitiful, few people in the box (usually only Martins) and long balls ingnoring the midfield altogether. Besides at his age he still has time on his side to continue his development.

He should be kept, especially with the number of departures set to rise even more, because of his age and versatility. If Keegan is able to get the quality he is after then we could see Milner realise his potential more with those players around him. Should Milner struggle to make a decent impression on the first team then he could go.

  • 40 craig chisholm // Jun 13, 2008 at 12:46 PM

mac and james thats an interesting thought but it makes no sense when i think about it. Firsty, if milner knows hes going to villa via liverpool just like a pawn he wont like it nad also, what is the point in any of it anyway when villa want to buy milner directly without selling barry in the first place?? the whole liverpool route is pointless from both milners and villas point of view. i think that milner is staying and the whole story is just the usual press shite. with duff almost certainly going we need someone as versatile as milner who can go left or right wing. he is a very good squad player an i would keep him as back up to lets say Turan on the left and SWP on the right, zogs in the middle with aimar. now thats nice!!

  • 41 Pan // Jun 13, 2008 at 12:51 PM

I believe KK wants SWP and that he could well be at SJP next season.

  • 42 scott9 // Jun 13, 2008 at 12:56 PM

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO DONT LET HIM GO IT WILL REALLY ANGER ME IF WE LET HIM GO WERE ALOWAYS ON ABOUT BRINGING GREAT YOUNG PLAYERS IN SO WHY LET THE ONES WE ALRREADY HAV GO hes a great young talent and a qaulity player we cannot afford to let him leave

  • 43 Ashton // Jun 13, 2008 at 12:58 PM

    sell him

  • 44 Macas // Jun 13, 2008 at 1:03 PM

So who do we play when our replacement winger gets injured if we sell Milner?? Erm…Geremi??! The whole point of this transfer window is to get rid of deadwood and add some top class players to the decent ones we have already.
Milner is certainly not deadwood and has been one of our better players in recent seasons. Even if we do sign a world class right winger we need to have someone like Milner in reserve in case of injuries.
Selling Emre made sense because of his injury problems, Rozenhal just wasnt up to the job, Ameobi is pants, Duff and Smith I would allow to leave, but we need to keep the rest of our squad together and build on it.

  • 45 bailey // Jun 13, 2008 at 1:05 PM

Wish this was Smith we were talking about.

  • 46 Yahya Ahmad // Jun 13, 2008 at 1:23 PM

    ‘Bailey’ I agree with you!

  • 47 JayJay // Jun 13, 2008 at 2:01 PM

I hope Milner does go i dont know what people see in him anyway, fair enough he works hard but he has no pace or trickery for a wide man and his crossing is awful plus he doesnt get many goals, he’s just an average player with one pace for everything he does. I dont see why liverpool are even interested in him.

  • 48 Andreas // Jun 13, 2008 at 2:18 PM

    ” Sun’lun’s Burnin’ // Jun 13, 2008 at 12:01

Larsson is a centre mid you fool! he would not replace milner! ”

Noop, he is a right sided midfielder. Played on the right for Brum, play on the right in the Swedish national team too. EOS.

  • 49 Leo // Jun 13, 2008 at 2:53 PM

where has this falasy come from that james milner is slow!!! have you been to a newcastle match before?

he is fast and the whole thing about him not being able to cross, please bare in mind that before he was given a rest he was playing in a team with owen and martins and aiming at the to lads isnt too easy

dont come back saying that they are both good with their heads etc, yes that maybe true but it isnt exactly easy to aim at

when dukes has played his crossed are better

  • 50 Kenneth Bassan // Jun 13, 2008 at 3:15 PM

if we get SWP, then sell him

  • 51 matt // Jun 13, 2008 at 4:20 PM

    said it before,

i’ll fall asleep laughing if we get 7m for milner!!

there’s a difference between heart and talent. it’s ideal if you have both but sometimes you cant cut it with just the former. he’s suppossed to’ve improved every season, and every season i wait, and see a player growing more and more into mediocrity and the inability to live up to his earlier billings.

If all these people are going, and im sure milner’s on his way, I’d have to be an idiot but to believe anything other than the guys up high already have replacements lined up and back up choices for those if theyre not already done deals. Keegan’s been on his way back from vacation in only a week for what, three weeks now? these guys would really be grade A idiots if they really just went on vacation and havent focused obsessively on transfer targets

  • 52 ziad // Jun 13, 2008 at 10:34 PM

keep milner def !! he is not great yet but with experience he might be

  • 53 toon4lyf // Jun 14, 2008 at 12:50 PM

hes vey average at leeds a thought he was a good playeer
