Not much has changed on the Sebastian Larsson front, where we believe Newcastle have already lodged a bid with Birmingham of around £4.2M, which is 50K Swedish Kroner.
Sebastian Larsson – Birmingham want to keep him
Larsson fits the Ashley blueprint as a promising young player with Premier League experience, and the right-sided midfielder seems an excellent target for the club.
However, this is hardly good news for Birmingham, and the Midlands club has made it clear a move for Larsson is not welcomed.
But when you get relegated you have to admit you will necessarily lose your more ambitious and good players.
Not many good players want to make the big step down to the Championship.
Sources in the West Midlands have said the club would not sell the 23-year-old Swedish star, unless they received an offer well in excess of the £4.2M bid.
How often have we heard that in an effort to get the biggest fee for a player?
Manager Alex McLeish has now said he does not want to lose Larsson, and when asked about the player’s future, given the news about definite interest from Newcastle, he said:
“There’s no change (in Larsson’s status).”
“We’ve made it clear what we feel about Seb and I believe he’s happy working with us.”
“A year in the Championship is not a disaster for any player.â€
A year is the absolute minimum Larrson could spend in the Championship, and at 23 years old, that may not look like a good option for the promising Swede.
We think it’s more up to the player than Birmingham, as to what he wants to do, and we think a move to Newcastle would be a good step up for the youngster.
But nothing much will be decided until Sebastian finishes his time with the Sweden National side at the Euro 2008 Championships.
