Nicky Shorey Available To Newcastle at £3.5M

News today that Newcastle want Reading’s Nicky Shorey for £3.5M.

Nicky Shorey – Newcastle target in the summer?

This is not the first time we’ve been linked with Shorey, so we’re not sure if this is a recirculated story, or really new news.

The last time Nicky was linked with us, the price was around £2.5M.

However, it does seem that Newcastle are not too interested in Liverpool’s Norwegian left back John Arne Riise, who is now linked heavily with Roma for around £3M.

Shorey, who has played for England once, is certain to leave Reading this summer, following their relegation from the Premier League, and of course he has already been linked with a number of clubs.

Portsmouth, as usual, are interested in the player and may be favorites for his signature, but Kevin Keegan must improve the Newcastle back four, and is looking to bring two center-backs and a left back in during the summer.

Maybe he needs to recruit a whole new back four, with defenders Rozehnal, Carr, Diatta and Ramage already departed this summer.

The news today suggests Newcastle are indeed in the race, and are willing to pay £3.5M for the experienced Premier League player.

Shorey has one year remaining on his current Reading contract, and seems only too willing to move to a bigger club.

That should at least help him, if he wants to get back into the England reckoning, under new manager Fabio Capello.

We” just have to wait and see if Newcastle make their move.

He may be available. Is he good enough? Will he be back up to the developing Enrique? Is he the KK style of player? So many questions and one where we need to rely on Kevin for the answers.

wouldnt be excited about nicky shorey. Big teams in spain are interested in Jose enrique so that indicates that clubs can see the potential he has.

i cant imagine nicky shorey going to a big club in spain or england for that matter.

With alot of foreigners being looked at maybe we need a few english players and he would be a bargain to challenge enrique.

I hope we try to sign Srna he is quality, amazing at crossing, corners, free-kicks and runs. We need to be linked with him to add to our only two wingers milner and zoggy. Add Turan aswell and our wings would be unstoppable. Then De Jong for DM and Larsson for midfield versatality.

Sign him up. That’s not a bad price and having him and Enrique at LB means we would be set there for a while.

i am still not sure if he is that good. i think wayne bridge would be better and with the new manager at cheski now in place, i bet he will be spending massive – proper massive and it would not suprise me if there will be many of their players available and i bet bridge is one ofthe ones avaiable.

no offence, but i’m getting sick of those overrated, overpayed british players… the world is full of great, talented, cheeper players…but only a few of them get a chance to play in a big league…

I know ill be ridiculed for saying this but a player who has really impressed me in Euro 2008 is a winger for Austria called Harvik

He was terrific against Croatia and put some great crosses in but they had nobody anywhere near any of them but with Owen, Viduka and Martins he could be a decent cheap signing

When did this natalie Sawyer lass come on Sky sports news ??

anyone else noticed how the media are trying to hype up Modric in this tournament despite him doing nothing special. He was bullied by Germany and had very little impact on the game as a whole, yet he managed to get man of the match on one or two internet sites. Its pathetic really, Olic was a much better player in that match and he worked much harder

Spyro – YES! I’ve noticed that. I haven’t been impressed at all by Modric but the southern media obviously have their favourites.

dont you agree though craigg? have you been really impressed by him so far?

put it this way, i have seen nothing so far to warrant a man of the match award. Even my room mate who is a Tottenham fan said this himself.

Get Shorey in. He’s a good player, has made it to the international stage and would be comfortable on the left side of midfield as well as left back.

But he wouldn’t be my first choice LB. Enrique is quality.

Spyro…I personally dont like Modric but from which point of view you’re saying he’s not good.
If you check how many accurate passes he has per game and the covered distance aswell then you’ll think otherwise.
    He’s a pure engine of a man.

im not saying he has played bad. I said he was bullied against Germany, and by the way, his pass accuracy is indeed high, but that is more to do with the fact he normally just looks for the simple pass, rather than the “cesc fabregas” style passes. As i said before, my room mate is a Tottenham fan and he was getting irritated with Modric constantly looking for the simple pass rather than the killer one. They are expecting him to be their version of Fabregas, but that is not the case

I didnt see yeaterdays match, but the first match he had a good spell for the first 15 minutes, scored the penalty then went very quiet

It may have been the fact that Croatia sat behind the ball and played for the 1-0

Spurs may expect too much too soon from him as their other midfielders dont impress me too much and he may be bullied against sides like Bolton with Nolan and McCann in the middle or maybe even us Barton (If he stays) and Butt arent going to give him much time on the ball nor will they pull out of tackles

As long as he’s happy to play second fiddle to Wor Jose, I say ship him in. Always good to have a decent back up in any position, but apparently left back is getting harder to fill.

I reckon Shorey with Enrique is a reasonable situation within the squad. At 3.5m he is not expensive and he may still have England potential. Just wonder if he is a KK “entertainer”.

Shorey has a great left foot, scores some great goals and sets up a load as well with some fantastic crosses

Also fantastic set piece taker, Geremi take note

Edgar can shadow Enrique better than anyone at left back. look what he did against Ronaldo the best in the world.
Why waste a fee and big wages on someone who can’t defend and would be sat on the bench collecting 40k a week. !! Reading didn’t go down for nothing. Same with Given, Krul could shadow Harper better than anyone.

The reason reading went down was due to their strikers not scoring, It was certainly not shoreys fault

Enrique was good not Great and its obvious that Kev doesnt rate him as he talked about him like he begruged playing him.

If we buy Shorey i wouldnt be surprised if we did get rid of Enrique and indeed swapped him for a valencia player Silva would be my choice as he has been told he can leave and would replace our outgoing Wingers.

As you did say we have cover from Edgar as well as Tozer and Kadar.

I disagree about selling Given, Weve seen Krul once and he played well, but is that enought to sell our world class Keeper ?

Definitely! 5M for a 32 year old who’s taken a hell of a beating, probably mentally as well as physically. Shay is a brilliant shot stopper, but his distribution and communication with the defense aren’t great.

I think he would be a very good signing. If KK wants him he might choose between Shorey or Enrique according to the tactics he prefers:

    1. attacking side => Shorey will play, cause he is the better one in going forward, good crosses
    2. defensive side => Enrique will play, cause he is the better defender of the 2.

KK will sign a left back, we know that and you cant go far wrong with an England international!

What fact really surprised me a few months ago on SSN. They were talking about Giggs and who put the most crosses in last season and there at number 5 was Shorey!

We’ve lacked that on the left all season, with Shorey in the team (and yes i would have him ahead of Enrique) we would have better balance.

    Sign him for me
