Arshavin Looking to Leave Russia In Summer

June 13th, 2008 · 58 Comments

Newcastle have been closely linked with Russian captain, Andrei Arshavin, since last October.

andrei-srshavin.jpg

Arshavin - wants to move to England or Spain

And there were even signs in January that we may sign the midfielder for around £8M.

That was until Sam Allardyce was replaced by Kevin Keegan.

Since then there has been very little news on Newcastle’s interest in the player, who couldn’t play for Russia in their first two games in Euro 2008 because of a suspension.

But it seems that the 5′8″ Russian is still keen to leave his current club, Zenit St Petersburg.

Arshavin, 27, has been watched by Spurs, Arsenal and Newcastle, and has agreed to sign for another year with his Russian club, but only if a deal with another club doesn’t materialize by June 20. That’s one week.

The Russian has said he wants to move to England or Spain.

Zenit official Konstantin Sarsania said:

“Andrei wants to try playing in one of the leading European leagues, but if he doesn’t leave us by June 20 he’ll stay in the team.”

The player has already said he’s be only too happy to move to Newcastle United, but right now we’re not sure what Kevin thinks of the player.

Zenit St Petersburg is his home town club, and the only club he’s ever played for, having made 211 appearances since 2000, and scored 44 goals for them.

He’s so far played 34 times for Russia scoring 11 goals.

Well, he’s available if Newcastle are interested.

Comments welcome.

He would be a great buy, but I wouldn’t pay a ridiculous amount for him.

  • 2 Mac // Jun 13, 2008 at 10:11

Yeah good buy but there is absolutely nothing to suggest that we’re interested in him,if Keegan rates him or even knows who he is. I think we can put this story to bed and rest assured that mr Arshavin will not be in the black and white next season.

  • 3 HeronMag // Jun 13, 2008 at 10:13

Agreed Mac I don’t see him in a black and white shirt next season. We know Allardyce was interested but I’ve heard nothing from KK suggesting he’s interested at all.

  • 4 ronaldeano // Jun 13, 2008 at 10:13

It depends weather KK likes him or not. He is a good player but i would prefer us to spend big and go for VDV. If we were willing to pay a vast amount for Modric, why not VDV

  • 5 liamtoonbirchy // Jun 13, 2008 at 10:13

good news, if we want him were being forced to move in quickly but can we be quicker than other clubs and the deadline?

    8m would be fair price.

  • 6 Danish_Magpie // Jun 13, 2008 at 10:16

Personally, I think he will move for more than 8m and he will prob. end up at City or something. I think he is a quality player and would actually be perferctly suited to playing the deep-lying forward position in our 4-3-3 (if we do stick with that formation).

Worth a shot I think, good quality indeed.

  • 7 Tom from Aus // Jun 13, 2008 at 10:19

i hope we get him and more backs. We need to improve our shakey back line

  • 8 Mac // Jun 13, 2008 at 10:19

Yeah i must admit i would pay 8m but again it is all talk. Nothing will come of this story. I agree with trying to get VDV but once again we have no idea what is happening at the club.

  • 9 Aussie Dave // Jun 13, 2008 at 10:23

absolute quality definately would improve the team, sign him up.

Has anyone seen how good Deco has been playing, plenty of people bag him on this blog, but he would definately be a good signing.

    Chelsea will take him

  • 10 Geordie Gerrard7 // Jun 13, 2008 at 10:27

i doubt we are intrested in arse shaving. good player but would prefer arda, vdv, seb larsson and inler in a midield, that would be excellent.

cant see us getting vdv or inler though. although both are totally plausable

  • 11 brownrob // Jun 13, 2008 at 10:28

Personally id sign him at all costs, imagine the joy Oba and Owen would have with Arshavin playing all those intelligent passes to them, and Obas pace :D

The thing Viduka gives us is intelligent passing, and a bit of muscle, granted Arshavin isnt as strong, but his passing is sublime and has more pace, he would also be a good role model for Kazenga too :)

The fact I have him on the toon in FM08 is besides the point! I believe I got him for 7m ;) Who needs wisey eh? :D

  • 12 broon ale // Jun 13, 2008 at 10:28

Ed Harrison, when did he say he would be willing to move to newcastle.? Do you have a quote to back that up?

  • 13 meiny_obano9 // Jun 13, 2008 at 10:28

WE NEED GET THIS PLAYER HE IS CLASS

  • 14 ChrisL // Jun 13, 2008 at 10:30

Him & the russian striker might be a good pair

  • 15 brownrob // Jun 13, 2008 at 10:33

    Pavel Pogrebnyak ChrisL?

Have to admit I never seen him play, but Tom thinks he is great!

  • 16 Spyro // Jun 13, 2008 at 10:47

Broon Ale, Arshavin said he would be happy to come to us back in January i think.

By the way, Arsenal are now interested in Turan i think

  • 17 broon ale // Jun 13, 2008 at 10:48

Ok, if Ed cant answer maybe some of you guys can..

it stipulates in this article that Arshavin has indicated he would like to join newcastle.

has he actually said this himself or was that just simply a bit of peotic licence.

surely there must be quotes attributed to arshavin stating his desire to sign for newcastle.

  • 18 broon ale // Jun 13, 2008 at 10:48

spro, we posted at the same time. If what you say is fact, thats fair enough

  • 19 Spyro // Jun 13, 2008 at 10:50

We have had a head start on Turan and Arshavin and if we dont sign at least one of the two i will start to have serious doubts on the ambitions of the club

  • 20 ChrisL // Jun 13, 2008 at 10:50

I think that’s him, Strachan was getting excited about him the other day, rates him as a big Teddy Sheringham… sounds good to me! But obviously I’m just going by Strachan’s opinion. I just think that when new players come in it’s a good idea to get two together (i.e. two Russians).

  • 21 Spyro // Jun 13, 2008 at 10:51

might have been his agent though Broon, cant really remember, but dont worry, we could get him as long as we act in the next week or so…but we wont lol

  • 22 nightfall // Jun 13, 2008 at 10:52

get him..he’s better then all turans, decos, etc.
we’ll have problems signing big names ‘cos of the wage buget… a lot of players are greedy…let’s hope arshavin is not one of them :)

  • 23 Geordie Gerrard7 // Jun 13, 2008 at 10:52

were you hear arsenal are intrested in turan?

  • 24 Leo // Jun 13, 2008 at 10:53

its funny all the everton fans are all claiming that he said during january that he wanted to sign for them….

sounds like he had the exactly statement sent out to us than them

  • 25 Patrick // Jun 13, 2008 at 10:54

Hi, I would like to express some of my thoughts on this year’s transfer business. However, to cut it short, I think it’s the time for the reserves to step up. As well, we have to make good choices on buying. (To be honest, I am thinking of matching with the “Entertainers” who were able to win Manchester United by 5 goals.)

Starting from the Goalkeeper, if we are selling Given, we will end up with Harper and two prospects Foster and Krul. Don’t forget Given was a young player when he joined us around 10 years ago.

I’ll never say the defense is not good enough, but more armor is welcome. However, the most important thing is to keep Steven Taylor, period. Aren’t we having one of the best defense in the league with the rising Enrique, the best right back Beye and the gentle guy Taylor? We also have Faye who can play the center back. One of the most important thing is… give Edgar more chance to establish. With Tozer, Kadar and other new lads, I think the leaving four will never be missed. (esp Carr) My personal dream would be getting a guy like Phillppe Albert who can also score goals and participate in attacking once in a while. Edgar can be like that.

I view the midfield and the forward as one same thing. We are always talking about 4-3-3 now, but isn’t it what the “Entertainers” used? Starting from the defensive midfielder, Butt is irreplacible, but we also have Geremi and Faye (he’s good in the anchoring positions) The left and right midfield is the real problem. Getting a Ginola-liked midfielder, who can pass, score, run with the attractive dribbling, is a good thing. We don’t get talents like that for a long time. Except that, I think the midfield is okay. Let’s just buy Arda Turan and some other right-price buys who can run.

The frontline… Please treat/change Owen as Beardsley (and I think it’s what KK’s doing). Beardsley came to NUFC as a forward, but he made a switch to the Attacking midfield role which has been very impressive. How about the forwards? There’s one and only one Alan Shearer who can consistently score. We need one person like that now. We have a pacey forward Martins (which I consider one of the very few things better than the “Entertainers” era) and we need a crashing forward. We need the “Viduka of Celtics” or “Viduka of Leeds” but not the one we have now. Let’s change Carroll into something like that. (Buying Gomis is not necessary as he is another pacey guy only).

Someone may tell that EURO 2008 is a good place to start looking, but don’t forget the story of Stephane Guivarc’h!!! We have bought junks like that, a few times.

As a short conclusion, I think our success can’t depend on big money buys. We need to turn to our great reserved team and the young guns. When we buy big names with big money (except Shearer and Owen), we usually fail to get the best from them.

What do you think Ed? I would like to discuss about this with you.

  • 26 WIGAZ // Jun 13, 2008 at 10:55

We should go for him! he’s a quality player & would give us that creative touch we so badly need! (aint had it since pedro) hope vdv rumours are true! but i think this guy could be a more realistic option! what you lads think of gomez? he’s been bum so far in euros but i do think he’d be better for us than gomis!

  • 27 Chris H // Jun 13, 2008 at 10:56

I’ll be disapointed if we don’t at least try to get Arshavin. He’s a quality player. He was easily the best player on the pitch in the Uefa Cup final!

If wise and co. are aiming too high i.e VDV and so on we’ll miss out on players like Arshavin. Get him signed up.

  • 28 Spyro // Jun 13, 2008 at 10:58

my mistake GG7, my mistake, it is just an Arsenal forum, however this shows he is now attracting attention of the fans so he must be attracting rival managers right?

Gomis has also been poor so far in the Euro, then again he aint played much, about half an hour i think

  • 29 Gunnar/Iceland // Jun 13, 2008 at 11:02

Class player but I think we won’t be buying him.

  • 30 Tom // Jun 13, 2008 at 11:10

broon ale - i definately remember arshavin saying a “come and get me” message round about january. i remember reading it on skysports, can’t remember the exact quotes though.

  • 31 Davies // Jun 13, 2008 at 11:27

I hope Mr Wise is reading this.

what we need to know really is when kk is back from holliday it seems nothing is happening till then so has anybody got any idea when he’s back?????

  • 34 Gateshead Mag. // Jun 13, 2008 at 11:29

There’s some quote of when he said he’d would be interested. I don’t see how that could change tbh. Esp if we get in some new players. We also have a bigger name manager.

Arda Turan, Arshavin and then we’re talking.

  • 35 Gateshead Mag. // Jun 13, 2008 at 11:31

Geordie KK, About two weeks :(

  • 36 geordiekk // Jun 13, 2008 at 11:33

i read something yesturday that he was back the end of this week its only the journal saying another 2 weeks

  • 37 geordiekk // Jun 13, 2008 at 11:35

i remember Arshavin’s come and get me plea its the only reason i watched the uefa cup final he was quality

  • 38 Gateshead Mag. // Jun 13, 2008 at 11:36

Aye. He was involved in both of the goals. Can anyone see this happening though?

  • 39 geordiekk // Jun 13, 2008 at 11:45

i think deals are done just waiting for kk to get back this might sound stupid but i think berbatov might be the big surprise theres been no talk of him leaving since that meeting between ma and kk in london u never know he is a toon fan

  • 40 Hate Prawn Sandwiches // Jun 13, 2008 at 12:16

Keegan has a mobile! and no doubt the club would be in contact with him, if he needs to be consulted! I believe most if not all our targets are at present in the Euros! so we are going to have to be patient!! its hard to say as we all want to get the right players in ASAP!
I hope we sign Arda Turan, we need to pay his asking price! just sick of all media gossip!

  • 41 Gateshead Mag. // Jun 13, 2008 at 12:28

There is more than Keegan at the club to be fair. If someone rings him and says do you want Arshavin. He say’s yes. Someone else can do the work from there.

  • 42 TomPoon // Jun 13, 2008 at 12:46

    My No1 target for months.

He was awesome in UEFA cup.

    Sign him now…!!!

  • 43 Marat18 // Jun 13, 2008 at 12:56

ok, i never heard Arshavin talked about Newcastle, but heard once he talked about Everton - “it’s a good team, bla-bla-bla, we played them, i would be interested if they make an offer etc.”

  • 44 scott9 // Jun 13, 2008 at 12:58

GET HIM IN LETS NOT FALL ASLEEP ON THIS ONE

  • 45 Yahya Ahmad // Jun 13, 2008 at 13:16

    Get him now!

  • 46 figsdad // Jun 13, 2008 at 14:31

Carnt see keegan being intrested tbh,,,

  • 47 Ericles // Jun 13, 2008 at 15:03

Another fantasy trip. We are going to end up playing the Academy in the EPL next season.

  • 48 micepie // Jun 13, 2008 at 15:09

We should keep in mind that Russian players have mostly done badly in the Prem but he does sound like he’d be a great buy!

  • 49 WIGAZ // Jun 13, 2008 at 15:15

Geordie KK i would love it if your right! love it! berb is top quality although i hope he is a toon fan coz sometimes he’s moody & can drift in & out of games! i kno he’s nowhere near the class of berb but i’d love crouch in black & white! plays well with owen, sure he would with oba to & always puts in 100%!

  • 50 Obafan // Jun 13, 2008 at 15:27

He would be my first choice of player to get to the club.

    My top 5 list is:
    1. Arshavin
    2. Gomis
    3. Van der Vaart
    4. Turan (looked really good last Wednesday)
    5. Collocini

  • 51 WIGAZ // Jun 13, 2008 at 15:38

Thats a good list obafan! not to sure about gomis tho? put crouch in there for me! seen gomis in youtube & he looks mint but crouch is proven in the prem! you should send your list to kk in costa del sol!

  • 52 Gateshead Mag. // Jun 13, 2008 at 15:51

    Owen Berbatov

    Turan Arshavin Butt Larsson

    Enrique Kompany Faye Beye

    Harper

Not a bad team eh? lol.

  • 53 Ben_BKK // Jun 13, 2008 at 16:55

Now that team would get me excited lol

  • 54 Geordie Gerrard7 // Jun 13, 2008 at 17:06

    ideall team for next year.

    ————–BORUC————-
    Beye—Collicini-Tayls—Jose
    ^
    Turan——-larsson——–Srna
    —————-VdV—————–
    ———Mo————Gomez—–

Very good young team, infact an auwesome team

  • 55 chuck // Jun 13, 2008 at 17:45

Yeah dream on, its not gonna happen.
Allready told you guys its obvious the plan is dont spend it, make it, after all this is a business.
Going to get your Shoreys, Larrsens, etc.
Unsettled players from relegated teams plus big 4 castoffs.
Another season of mediocrity, hopefully avoiding relegation, cause thats where this team is heading unless there is a change in policy.

  • 56 Gateshead Mag. // Jun 13, 2008 at 17:50

    Chuck, Shutup man.

  • 57 The Entertainers // Jun 13, 2008 at 18:10

In all honesty i cant see this one coming off, but he is the type of creative midfielder we NEED.

This is not Owens position and would love to see this guy, Moutiniho, VDV, Aimar, but these type of players are always the most sort after as they tend to be the most skillful.

Good luck Newcastle i think we might need it!

  • 58 Gateshead Mag. // Jun 13, 2008 at 23:59

Were boont to get one of them man.

Dr. Ed Harrison is a retired IBM Consulting Group Executive who now has time, and lots of it, after 34 years at the American computer company, to write about his lifelong passion - Newcastle United Football Club.

Ed was born and bred in Newcastle Upon Tyne, and watched his first game at St. James’ Park in 1949 as a 4 year-old with his Mother and Father. He was told to look out for number 9 - Jackie Milburn – the great Wor Jackie - and was he fast!

In football terms Ed was a goalkeeper and played for Wharrier Street Primary School and Newcastle Minors (Newcastle Schoolboys Under-11), in 1956 and went on to play for Newcastle Schoolboys and Northumberland Schoolboys (Under-15) in 1959 and an England Schoolboys trial.

He was at Newcastle United for a couple of years from 1960 as an amateur, while still at school, and played with Bobby Moncur and David Craig, amongst others, for the Newcastle United Under-18 side (Newcastle N’s in those days), during the relegation season of 1960-1961.

Ed attended Heaton Technical and Manor Park schools, and then went on to study at both King’s College, London (BSc Electrical Engineering) and Newcastle University (PhD Computer Science). He played for Newcastle Universities and England Universities from 1967 until 1970.

But a short couple of years after Ed joined IBM in 1970, he was shipped over to the USA, with his new wife Madeline, a beautiful local Newcastle lassie.

At IBM Ed was in computer systems and network design for 34 years, and in his last 10 years at the company was persuaded to enter executive management. where he ended up running IBM's Americas' Network Consulting Group for 5 years from the late 1990s, and was instrumental in forming the IBM alliance with Cisco Systems in 1999.

Ed and Madeline live just outside Raleigh in North Carolina. Their twin sons Paul and Neil, and daughter Elaine, are now in their early 30s, live close by, and Neil has carried on the family tradition by becoming an avid Newcastle United supporter.

And one final thing that is so true - you can take the boy out of Newcastle but you can't take Newcastle out of the boy!

    Howay The Lads!!
